"Proud I'm Indian, Muslim": Shami On Gesture After 5-Wicket World Cup Haul

Mohammed Shami took the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 by storm, quite literally. The fast bowler missed the first four matches that the Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team played, but still took 24 wickets in seven matches - the most by anyone in 2023 edition. The 33-year-old pacer from Uttar Pradesh took three five-wicket hauls. Among the many records that he broke during the course of the World Cup, one that stood out was the seven-wicket haul that he took against New Zealand in the semi-final. It's the best-ever figures by an Indian in ODI cricket.

However, there was one social media storm that brewed after India's match against Sri Lanka, where Mohammed Shami took a five-wicket haul. After he took the fifth wicket at the Wankhede stadium in the round-robin stage match, he kneeled on the ground. Some social media users took the gesture in a different way and made an issue out of it. Mohammed Shami was asked about the same in an interview on Wednesday.

"There was one match where you took five wickets and then kneeled on the ground. Then from Pakistan, on social media, there came posts that said 'Mohammed Shami is an Indian Muslim. He wants to do Sajda (prayer), but he was afraid to do it in India'" the anchor asked Mohammed Shami on Aaj Tak.

Mohammed Shami's reply was quite straightforward. "If somebody wants to do Sajda, who will stop? I will not stop anybody from your religion, you will not stop anybody from my religion. If I have to do Sajda, I will do it. What is the problem? I say it with pride that I am Muslim. I am an Indian, I say it with pride that I am an Indian," he replied.

"If I had an issue, I wouldn't have lived in India. If I need to take anyone's permission to do Sajda, why should I live here. I have also seen those comments on social media. Have I ever done Sajda on the ground? I have taken five wickets before also, but have I ever done Sajda. If I have to do Sajda, tell me where to do it, I will do it."

Mohammed Shami added that such people, who try to create unnecessary controversy, should be avoided. He also revealed the real reason why he kneeled down on the ground.

"I will do it on every stage in India. Nobody can stop me. These people try to create disturbance. These people are neither with me nor you. They don't love anybody. They just need content. I kneeled down as I was bowling beyond my effort. I was tired. People took the gesture in a different way," Shami said.

Mohammed Shami is currently going through medical treatment and is expected to join the Indian cricket team for the Test series in South Africa, that starts on December 26.

Mohammed Shami is in the running to receive the Arjun Award, according to a report in news agency PTI. Shami's name has been recommended for this year's prestigious Arjuna award by the selection committee after his spectacular performance in the cricket World Cup 2023.

As the wait continues for the rain to stop, let's recap the first innings. Aiden Markram put India into bat under overcast conditions and it started off brilliantly for the Proteas as they picked up both Indian openers, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck each. Then came the fightback from Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav before the latter too got out in the final over of the Powerplay. With South Africa a wicket or two away from breaking the back of the Indian middle order, Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh put on a quickfire 70-run stand and both brought up their individual fifties in the process. The spinners bowled well for the hosts and it was Tabraiz Shamsi who broke the vital stand. The pacers went for a bit of stick and Rinku Singh capitalized in the death overs. Just before the halt in play though, Gerald Coetzee picked up a couple of wickets in consecutive deliveries but India will be the happier of the two sides, having put on 180 runs.

ICC Rates Bangladesh-New Zealand Test Dhaka Pitch 'Unsatisfactory'

Cricket's world governing body said Tuesday that a review of last week's second Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand had found it found the pitch "unsatisfactory". Fifteen wickets fell on the opening day of the match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, with neither side making more than 180 in an innings. New Zealand won the Test to level the two-match series 1-1 on Saturday but captain Tim Southee afterwards criticised the pitch as the "worst wicket" he had come across in his long career.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said Tuesday that match referee David Boon had also found the pitch was not up to scratch.

"It appeared that the pitch may have been under prepared, as it was not hard and was covered in grass clippings on day one," Boon's report to the ICC said.

"From the first session onwards, throughout the remainder of the match the bounce was inconsistent with numerous balls bursting the surface," it added.

"Deliveries from spin bowlers often went over the batter's shoulder when playing forward and then occasionally stayed very low."

The stadium was issued one demerit point by the ICC for garnering the "unsatisfactory" rating.

Demerit points stay valid for five years and if a venue gains six of them, it is banned from hosting international cricket matches for a year.

Pitches at the Mirpur stadium have been criticised numerous times over recent years for their slow and low characteristics. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has 14 days to appeal the sanction.

India Retain Asia Cup Squad, Uday Saharan Set To Lead In U-19 World Cup

Uday Saharan will be leading India in the Under-19 World Cup in South Africa next year, as the same side from the ongoing U-19 Asia Cup has been retained for the global showpiece beginning on January 19.
The 19-year-old Punjab lad would also be leading the side during a tri-series in South Africa, also involving England, from December 29, with Saumy Kumar Pandey being his deputy.

The BCCI has also picked Prem Devkar, Ansh Gosai and Mohammad Amaan on standby for the tri-series. "Post the tri-series, the India U-19 team will begin preparations for the much-anticipated U-19 World Cup," said BCCI in a statement.

The five-time defending champions begin their campaign against Bangladesh in group A on January 20 in Bloemfontein.

Ireland and the USA are the other two teams in the group A.
