Olympics: Indian Sailors Way Beyond Qualification Zones At End Of Day 4

Indian sailors Vishnu Saravanan and Nethra Kumanan ended day four of their campaign at the ongoing Paris Olympics outside the qualification zones in the men's and women's dinghy competitions on Sunday, finishing in 24th and 31st spots respectively after eight races. On day four, Vishnu was in seventh place with seven race points at the end of race seven. However, he slipped to 24th place with 24 race points at the end of the eighth race. At the end of race six on day three, the Asian Games bronze medalist Vishnu was in 13th place with 13 race points. After the fifth race, Saravanan was in 21st place with 21 race points.

Vishnu ended day two at the end of race four in 19th place with 19 race points. At the end of race three, he was in 20th place with 20 race points. On day one, taking part in race one with 43 competitors, Vishnu finished in 10th place with 10 race points. However, at the end of race two, he slipped to 34th place with 34 race points.

Boats that finish between 1st and 10th place at the end of race 10 will progress to the medal race.

On day four, Nethra was in 21st place with 21 race points at the end of the seventh race, but she slipped to 31st place with 31 race points at the end of the eighth race.

In the women's dinghy competition, Nethra finished in 20th place with 20 race points at the end of race six. After race five, she was in a much lower position, at 28th with 28 race points. After race four, Nethra was in 28th place with 28 race points.

In the women's dinghy competition, Nethra finished day two at the end of race three with 27 race points in 27th place. At the end of race two, she was in 15th place with 15 race points.

On day one, Nethra finished in sixth place with six race points at the end of race one.

Saravanan secured India its first sailing quota for the 2024 Olympics in the men's dinghy this January in Australia at the ILCA 7 Men's World Championship 2024. He also secured a bronze medal in the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year in the men's dinghy competition.

Kumanan secured India's second Paris 2024 Olympics quota in sailing during the Last Chance Regatta, an Olympic qualifier event, held in Hyeres, France in April. She was competing in the women's dinghy (ILCA 6). Nethra managed to get a fifth-place finish after scoring 67 points on the overall leaderboard. Due to being the top performer among all sailors from the Emerging Nations Program (ENP) who were yet to get a quota, she managed to earn her country a ticket to the Olympics.

'Overwhelmed' Yulo Wins Historic Gymnastics Olympic Gold For Philippines

Carlos Yulo triumphed on Saturday in the men's floor exercise of the gymnastics in Paris for only the second Olympic gold in the history of the Philippines. The 24-year-old broke down in tears after matching the achievement of weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, who won gold at the Covid-delayed 2020 Tokyo Games. "I just went for it, I didn't hesitate," said Yulo. The former world champion perfectly executed his routine, ending with a sure-footed landing to score 15.000 points. It sealed the first gymnastics Olympic medal ever for the Philippines.

Defending champion and world titleholder Artem Dolgopyat of Israel was pushed into silver with 14.966.

"The past months (in general) were hard. I had some problems with my leg and also the training was difficult," said the 27-year-old Dolgopyat.

"It's a hard time in Israel. I tried to do my best in the competition, to show everyone that Israel is very strong and that we can win medals."

Britain's Jake Jarman, who had scored highest in qualifying a week ago, achieved 14.933 to take bronze at Bercy Arena.

Yulo had warned he was "shooting for the stars" in Paris after missing out on the podium in Tokyo.

And his acrobatic and technically difficult routine proved a hit, scoring higher than the 14.766 he had garnered in qualifying.

"I'm so overwhelmed. I'm feeling grateful for having this medal and for God. He protected me, as always," said Yulo, who has a chance of another medal in the vault final on Sunday.

"He gave me the strength to get through this kind of performance and perform this well."

China's Xiao Ruoteng, the Tokyo floor bronze medallist, slumped to last in the eight-man final after hopping out of bounds after his opening jump to finish with 13.933.

Xiao had been bidding for gold to add to his silver in the men's team event and bronze in the all-around competition at the Paris Games.

Watch: Olympics Gender Row Boxer Cries After Getting Assured Of Bronze

The Algerian boxer embroiled in a major gender controversy guaranteed herself at least bronze at the Paris Olympics on Saturday, bursting into tears after winning her quarter-final. Imane Khelif, who has found herself in the eye of a global storm along with another boxer from Taiwan, beat Hungary's Anna Luca Hamori with a unanimous points decision to reach the semi-finals of the women's 66kg category. The duo embraced at the end, before the judges' verdict was delivered, and an animated Khelif left the ring in tears.

Losing semi-finalists in the boxing take home bronze.

Some of the crowd at North Paris Arena, where there were a large number of Algerians, chanted Khelif's name ahead of the bout and cheered her into the ring.

Hamori, who had said it was unfair to face Khelif, was booed into the venue but was magnanimous in defeat.

Khelif faces Janjaem Suwannapheng of Thailand in the last four on Tuesday for a place in the final.

"This is a matter of dignity and honour for every woman or female," the 25-year-old Khelif told BeIN Sports after a second dominant victory in Paris, having dismantled her opening opponent in 46 seconds.

"The entire Arab people have known me for years. For years I have been boxing in international federation competitions, they (IBA) were unfair with me. But I have God."

Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting can also guarantee herself at least a bronze medal on Sunday when she faces Bulgaria's Svetlana Staneva in the quarter-finals of the women's 57kg.

Khelif and Lin were disqualified from last year's world championships, run by the International Boxing Association (IBA), after failing gender eligibility tests.

The controversy ignited on Thursday when Khelif needed less than a minute to force an abandonment against her hurt and tearful Italian opponent Angela Carini.

Carini, who suffered a badly hurt nose and was distressed, collapsed to the centre of the ring in tears.

Khelif and Lin, 28, both competed at the Tokyo Games three years ago, where they failed to win a medal.

They were then disqualified from the IBA's 2023 world championships.

The IBA said this week that the two boxers "did not undergo a testosterone examination but were subject to a separate and recognised test, whereby the specifics remain confidential".

The boxing in Paris is organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which took over because of governance, financial and ethical issues at the IBA.

The IOC has leapt to the defence of Khelif and Lin, with president Thomas Bach on Saturday saying they were born and raised as women, and have passports saying that.

Neither boxer is known to identify as transgender.

Khelif's father Omar told AFP from their Algerian village: "My child is a girl.

"She was raised as a girl. She is a strong girl -- I raised her to work and be brave."

Pak Fan Says Babar Ignored Irfan For Interview, Harbhajan Gives Angry Reply

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has lashed out at a Pakistani fan on social media. The fan had posted a clip where Pakistan captain Babar Azam can be seen rejecting an interview. However, the fan incorrectly said that the interviewer was former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan. Enraged at the false appropriation, Harbhajan jumped to the defence of his former teammate and slammed the fan. In fact, Harbhajan went as far as to mock the English-speaking ability of the Pakistani cricketers.

"Where is Irfan Pathan in this video?" posted Harbhajan on X. "First you don't have the decency to speak. Now your eyes have stopped seeing as well?" responded Harbhajan.

While the original tweeter had said that it was Irfan Pathan who had been rejected by Babar, it was evident that Irfan was nowhere in the video. Harbhajan went on to attack Babar's English.

"In any case, if the question had been asked in English, there would've been a problem," retorted Harbhajan.

Soon after Harbhajan's tweet, the post also came into the attention of Irfan Pathan himself, who asked his ex-teammate to ignore such posts, stating that their only purpose is to gain reach on social media.

"They want reach by lying. Ignore, my friend," replied Irfan to Harbhajan's angry response.

Unfortunately, the original tweet and Harbhajan's response led to several angry back-and-forths as well as hate-mongering from fans of both nations.

Harbhajan's stance on India not visiting Pakistan for 2025 Champions Trophy

Harbhajan has also recently been in the news for supporting the reported decision by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to not travel to Pakistan for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

"I don't think it is safe to go there (Pakistan). Incidents occur there almost every day. The BCCI's stance is completely correct, because the players' security comes first," Harbhajan had told IANS.

India have not toured Pakistan since 2006.
