"Shame On Olympics": Internet Fumes Over Explosive 'Gender Row' In Paris

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who failed a gender eligibility test last year, pummelled her Italian opponent in 46 seconds at the Paris Olympics on Thursday as the controversy threatened to overshadow the sixth day of the Games. It will also renew the debate about the inclusion of competitors in other sports at the Olympics and beyond who have undergone similar eligibility testing. A distraught and hurt Angela Carini shrugged off attempts by Khelif to shake her hand afterwards and the Italian collapsed to her knees and sobbed uncontrollably in the middle of the ring.

Khelif advanced to the quarter-finals of the women's 66kg category after unloading two strong punches on Carini, who had blood on her shorts and was unable to carry on because of a badly hurt nose.

The one-sided bout sparked an immediate reaction from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who said the fight was "not on an equal footing".

"I have a big pain in my nose and I said, 'Stop'. It's better to avoid keeping going. My nose started dripping (with blood) from the first hit," said the distressed Carini, who also broke down in tears when talking to reporters.

The 25-year-old sobbed: "I fought very often in the national team. I train with my brother. I've always fought against men, but I felt too much pain today."

Khelif and Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting, who fights on Friday at 57kg, were disqualified from the world championships last year but deemed eligible to box in the women's competition in Paris.

The IOC website for accredited media in Paris said that the 25-year-old Khelif was disqualified after "elevated levels of testosterone failed to meet the eligibility criteria".

Both boxed in the women's event at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.

"I do not agree with the IOC," said Meloni, during a meeting with Italian athletes in Paris.

"I think that athletes who have male genetic characteristics should not be admitted to women's competitions."

Reem Alsalem, the UN special rapporteur on violence against women and girls, wrote on X that Carini "and other female athletes should not have been exposed to this physical and psychological violence based on their sex".

Khelif and Lin were disqualified from the 2023 world championships in New Delhi, which was run by the International Boxing Association (IBA).

Lin was stripped of her bronze medal after undergoing "biochemical" tests mandated by the IBA.

However, the International Olympic Committee is running the boxing in the French capital because of governance, financial and ethical issues at the IBA.

IOC spokesman Mark Adams told reporters this week: "Everyone competing in the women's category... is complying with competition eligibility rules.

"They are women in their passports and it's stated in there that they are female."

'Lies'

Khelif was given a huge roar when she came into the North Paris Arena, where there were numerous Algeria fans with the country's flag.

Before and during the very brief bout they chanted her name, but the action itself was over in a flash.

Khelif stopped only briefly to talk to reporters afterwards, saying: "It's always satisfying to win in such an important competition, but I remain focused on my goal of a medal."

Algeria and Taiwan sprang to the defence of their boxers.

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te gave the 28-year-old Lin his public backing.

"Yu-ting's performances have inspired many Taiwanese players and united Taiwanese people," he wrote on Facebook.

"Now that she is once again on the international stage, we should stand united and cheer for her."

Algeria's Olympic Committee (COA) condemned what it called "malicious and unethical attacks directed against our distinguished athlete, Imane Khelif, by certain foreign media".

The COA hit out at "lies" that were "completely unfair".

At least one woman boxer at the Games has spoken out about her concerns.

Australia's Caitlin Parker is in the 75kg weight class so will not face Khelif or Lin, but she made her stance on the controversy clear.

"I don't agree with that being allowed, especially in combat sports as it can be incredibly dangerous," she said.

"Did Whatever I Could've Done For India": Swapnil After Olympic Bronze

Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale shone at 2024 Paris Olympics with a historic bronze medal in the Men's 50m rifle three positions event on Thursday. Spending much of the early parts of the final in the fifth or sixth position, Swapnil made a dash for the top to clinch the bronze medal. This became India's third shooting medal, as well as the third medal overall, in Paris 2024. "Jo India ke liye kar sakte hain, hamne sab kuch kiya (Whatever I could have done for India, I did)," Swapnil told NDTV in an exclusive interview on Thursday.

Kusale finished on 451.4 points, just 0.5 short of silver medalist Serhiy Kulish at the point of elimination. Kusale made a stunning comeback into the medal spots after languishing near the bottom for the majority of the event.

The 28-year-old from Kambalwadi in the Kohlapur district of Maharashtra became the sixth male shooter from India to win an Olympic medal. The Paris Olympics 2024 is also his maiden appearance at the Games.

Having finished seventh in the qualifying round, Kusale surprised everyone to claim an unprecedented medal. Kusale became the very first Indian to clinch a medal in the 50m rifle three positions event.

Swapnil Kusale draws inspiration from MS Dhoni as he too is a railway ticket collector like the cricket icon was early in his career.

The 29-year-old from Kambalwadi village near Kolhapur in Maharashtra has been competing in international events since 2012 but he had to wait another 12 years to make his Olympics debut at the Paris Games.

Being calm and patient are pre-requisites for a shooter and those two traits are also the hallmark of Dhoni's personality. It is therefore no surprise that Kusale relates to Dhoni's life story.

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya hailed India shooter Swapnil Kusale for winning the bronze medal in the men's 50m rifle 3P event at the ongoing Paris Olympics on Thursday. Mansukh Mandaviya took to his official X handle and pointed out that Swapnil Kusale is the first Indian to win a medal in the men's 50m rifle 3P event. Mandaviya added that Kusale's achievement will make the nation proud. "Congratulations to Swapnil Kusale for winning a historic BRONZE medal in the Men's 50m Rifle 3 Positions at the #ParisOlympics2024! The first Indian to win a medal in #Olympics in this event--your achievement makes us incredibly proud," Mansukh Mandaviya wrote on X.


Indian Cricket Team head coach Gautam Gambhir also lauded Swapnil Kusale for his 'fantastic performance' at the ongoing multi-sport event.
"Congratulations #SwapnilKusale on a fantastic performance! Very well done," Gambhir wrote on X.


Earlier in the day, India shooter Swapnil Kusale won the bronze medal in the men's 50m rifle 3P event at the ongoing Paris Olympics. Kusale also became the first Indian shooter to win a medal in the men's 50m rifle 3P event.

Kusale clinched the bronze medal for India in the 50m Rifle 3 Positions Men's Final after finishing in third place with an aggregate of 451.4. He secured India's 3rd medal in shooting overall.

In the qualification round, Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale finished seventh in the qualification round of men's 50m 3P to qualify for the final at the ongoing Paris Olympics on Wednesday.

Indian shooters Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Swapnil Kusale both appeared in the men's 50m 3P qualification round at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

On his Olympic debut, Kusale finished seventh with a score of 590-38x. While Tomar ranked 11th with a total of 589-33x. Only the top eight shooters qualified for the final round, and Tomar failed to make his place in the final round.

Kusale was also the first Indian shooter to make a place in the men's 50m rifle 3P medal event at the Olympics.

SRK In Heated Chat With PBKS Owner In IPL Meeting. Report Makes Big Claim

Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan engaged in a heated argument with Punjab Kings co-owner Ness Wadia during the IPL owners' meeting at the BCCI Headquarters in Mumbai on Wednesday, according to a report by Cricbuzz. The report claimed that the two owners did not agree on the number of retentions each side should be granted ahead of the mega auction. While SRK was not convinced that there should be a mega auction before IPL 2025 at all, Wadia was completely in favour of a complete overhaul. The report further claimed that Wadia felt that there should be very less retentions for each side - a point that was not to Shah Rukh Khan's liking.

The other owners who attended the meetings were - Kiran Kumar Grandhi of Delhi Capitals, Sanjiv Goenka of Lucknow Super Giants, Rupa Gurunath of Chennai Super Kings, Kavya Maran of SunRisers Hyderabad and Manoj Badale of Rajasthan Royals. Few of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team winners including the Ambanis of Mumbai Indians attended the BCCI meeting through video conference.

Meanwhile, during the previous IPL season this year, there were eight 250-plus totals, including the total of 287 runs posted by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the highest-ever in league's history.

Various critics, players and experts expressed their dissatisfaction with the Impact Player rule, blaming it for such unprecedented six-hitting and for stunting the growth of all-rounders as team's often chose to use a pure batter/bowler through this role instead of an all-rounder.

This rule was introduced back in 2023 season and allows players to pick an extra specialist batter/bowler depending on the situation. Nine of the ten highest total in league's history have come after this rule's introduction, highlighting the freedom, power and flexibility it adds to teams.

Though the rule was meant to expose more Indian, especially uncapped players, it was criticised by players and experts alike this season, with Indian skipper Rohit Sharma even expressing that he was not a big fan of the rule since it did not allow the development of all-rounders, a vital aspect in T20Is for India.
