Churchill Withdraw From Super Cup For Not Being Declared I-League Winners

Churchill Brothers have withdrawn from the Super Cup tournament starting April 20 in Bhubaneswar, protesting against the All India Football Federation's (AIFF) decision to not officially declare them as 2024-25 I-League champions, calling it a "blatant disregard of rules and precedent" by the national governing body. In a letter written on Saturday to AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, the Goan club also cited "irregularities" in the conduct of the Super Cup draw as another reason for the pulling out of the April 20-May 3 tournament.

"This letter is to inform you of our withdrawal from the Super Cup 2025. On 09.04.2025, we wrote to you inviting your attention to irregularities in the manner in which the Super Cup 2025 draw had occurred," Churchill said in the letter.

"We have received no clarification as to the reason for the highly irregular and unconventional process adopted by the AIFF in conducting the draw, nor has said process been rectified." Churchill said "the fact that different teams have been subject to different methods of determining their seed for the competition is patently unfair." "It is noteworthy that this has occurred in the backdrop of the AIFF refusing to award Churchill Brothers FC the 2024-25 I-League trophy as required under Rule 14.4 of the I-League Regulations 2024-25.

"This refusal and disregard for the competition rules has occurred despite the fact that there is well established national and international precedent that the winner of sporting competitions must be declared upon the competition's conclusion regardless of ongoing legal challenges.

"Thus, in the face of the AlFF's blatant disregard towards rules, established precedent, and sporting spirit, we have no choice but to withdraw from the Super Cup 2025 in protest." The Super Cup is to be competed among 16 clubs (13 from Indian Super League and three from I-League) in a single-elimination knock-out format. The ISL teams were seeded for the round of 16 according to their final league positions in the 2024-25 season.

While announcing the schedule on April 7, the AIFF had said that Churchill Brothers, Inter Kashi and Gokulam Kerala FC have confirmed participation in the tournament.

Churchill said while the ranks according to 2024-25 ISL season standings have been followed for the seeding process of the Super Cup, the same has not been followed for the I-League.

"As the team in first place of the I-League at the end of the 2024- 25 season, Churchill Brothers FC ought to have been the 14th seed in the Super Cup. However, the AIFF has opted to disregard the table and instead award (ed) the 14th seed to Inter Kashi through an opaque draw of lots," the Goan club said in the letter.

"Inter Kashi has as a result treated their 14th place seed as the AIFF giving legitimacy to the patently false claim that they are the winners of the I-League 2024-25. The AIFF's continued inaction in this regard damages not only Churchill Brothers but the reputation of Indian football as a whole.

"This calls into question the AIFF's competency to act as the impartial governor and regulator of football in India. The draw of lots adopted by the AIFF lacks transparent legitimacy." Churchill Brothers finished provisionally on top of the I-League table (with 40 points), but their wait for the title and a historic promotion to the Indian Super League depends on the verdict of the AIFF's Appeal Committee which will decide a case involving second-placed Inter Kashi (39 points).

The controversy relates to Inter Kashi's match against Namdhari SC on January 13, when the latter won 2-0. But the AIFF Disciplinary Committee later found out that Namdhari fielded an ineligible player. The committee awarded a 3-0 forfeit win to Inter Kashi along with three points.

However, the AIFF Appeal Committee later put the decision "inoperative and in abeyance" until the final hearing. If Inter Kashi are awarded the three points, they will win the I-League title as they will have 42 points then.

The AIFF Appeal Committee was to hear the case on April 28 but advanced the date to April 11. But the counsel who was to represent Namdhari did not turn up for the hearing citing "sickness" and the AIFF Appeal Committee did not pronounce a verdict.

Six clubs, including Churchill, allege Inter Kashi getting benefits from refereeing errors

In another development, six clubs, including Churchill Brothers, wrote to the AIFF Disciplinary Committee, raising refereeing concerns and ethical issues in the I-League. The letter was signed by Real Kashmir, Delhi FC, Sreenidi Deccan, Namdhari FC and Aizawl FC, besides Churchill.

"While we understand that refereeing is overseen by an independent body and AIFF has no direct influence over refereeing appointments or in-game decisions, the recurring pattern of glaring officiating errors -- most, if not all, disproportionately benefiting one particular club, Inter Kashi FC -- raises serious concerns regarding integrity and impartiality of match officiating," the six clubs said in the letter.

"As proof ... we have annexed a compilation of specific video clips and match incidents, which clearly and objectively demonstrate the officiating inconsistencies and their material impact on match outcomes." The six clubs also alleged that "a senior official from Inter Kashi has been in indirect communication with various clubs as well as AIFF officials, allegedly seeking unethical favours in favour of Inter Kashi." "Such actions, if found to be true, constitute a serious breach of the principles of fair play and could irreparably harm the integrity and credibility of the I-League. We trust the AIFF and its Disciplinary Committee to take this representation with the seriousness it deserves."

Watch: Shreyas Iyer Left Fuming At Punjab Kings Teammate Over DRS Call vs SRH

Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer was left fuming during their IPL 2025 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). PBKS' Glenn Maxwell thought he had dismissed Travis Head caught behind by wicket-keeper Prabhsimran Singh. However, upon seeing the umpire giving it not out, signalled for a DRS review straight away. Moments later, though, Shreyas Iyer was shown to be angry at one of his teammates. Iyer pointed at himself, with his teammates vying for a review. Eventually, Iyer decided to go up with a DRS review upon Maxwell's insistance.

As it turned out, Travis Head remained not out after the whole saga. NDTV could not verify which teammate Iyer seemed to be frustrated on. While what Iyer said was not audible, It was quite apparent that he said: "Pehle merese puch na (Ask me first)"

Watch: Shreyas Iyer angry after DRS saga

Earlierm Punjab Kings unleashed an all-out assault against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 27 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, riding on a blazing half-century from Shreyas Iyer (82) and late fireworks from Marcus Stoinis, who scored 34 in eleven deliveries to reach 245/6 in 20 overs, here at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

While the innings had contributions across the board, it was Iyer's calculated aggression that stood out, giving PBKS the perfect launchpad for a mammoth total.

Stoinis finally announced his arrival in IPL 2025 with a sensational finish, smashing four consecutive sixes to close out Punjab Kings' innings in stunning fashion. The Australian all-rounder, who had struggled to make an impact with the bat so far this season, turned on the heat in the final over, propelling PBKS to a commanding total of 245.

Unfortunately for Mohammed Shami, it was a night to forget as the seasoned pacer bore the brunt of Stoinis' onslaught. Shami's final over went for 27 runs, capping off a rough spell that read 4-0-75-0 — second most expensive in IPL history.

After electing to bat, PBKS came out swinging from the very first over. Prabhsimran Singh set the tone with a flurry of boundaries off Mohammed Shami, charging at the veteran seamer and carving him through mid-off and cover with disdain. He was in no mood to show respect and gave PBKS a flying start.

Harshal Patel bowled a game-changing over in the 18th, conceding just five runs and removing both Shreyas Iyer and Maxwell in quick succession. Iyer's 82 off 36 had anchored PBKS' innings but his departure meant PBKS had to rebuild in the final overs and Stoinis did it perfectly.

Watch - 6, 6, 6, 6: Stoinis Rains Fury On Shami As SRH Star Concede 75

Punjab Kings batters, led by skipper Shreyas Iyer, went on a six-hitting spree to bulldoze their way to a massive 245 for six against Sunrisers Hyderabad, despite a four-wicket haul by Harshal Patel, in their IPL match on Saturday. If openers Priyansh Arya (36) and Prabhsimran Singh (42) provided a blazing start with a 66-run stand, it was Iyer who stole the show with a whirlwind knock of 82 off 36 balls, laced with six sixes and as many fours. He stitched a 73-run partnership off just 40 balls with Nehal Wadhera (22) to keep the momentum going. At the end of the innings, Marcus Stoinis took it to another level hitting Mohammed Shami for four straight sixes.

On a belter of a pitch, the PBKS openers came out all guns blazing, powering their side to a commanding 89 for one in the powerplay.

Prabhsimran set the tone early, hitting Mohammed Shami (0/75) for three boundaries, before Priyansh tore into Pat Cummins (0/40) with a six and two fours. The left-hander then smashed Shami for two successive sixes and a four, while Prabhsimran flicked another delivery for a maximum as Punjab raced to 50 in just three overs.

Harshal Patel (4/42) eventually broke the opening stand, outfoxing Priyansh with a slower delivery that was mistimed to Nitish Reddy. PBKS were 66 for one after four overs.

Harshal could have had Prabhsimran too, but Abhishek Sharma dropped a difficult chance. The Kings ended the powerplay on a high, with Iyer finishing it in style with a six.

SRH finally got some relief when Sri Lankan pacer Eshan Malinga (2/45), making his IPL debut, dismissed Prabhsimran in the next over. The opener slapped a slower ball straight to Cummins.

However, Malinga was taken apart in his second over, with Iyer and Wadhera hitting him for a six each.

Zeeshan Ansari, who bowled two tight overs without conceding a boundary, was then launched for two sixes and a reverse-hit four by Iyer over long-off, showcasing the PBKS skipper's form and flair.

Iyer completed his half-century with a sliced boundary off Shami, while Wadhera kept the scoreboard ticking with a fine-leg swipe.

PBKS lost two quick wickets as Malinga produced a yorker to dismiss Wadhera, and Harshal Patel trapped Shashank Singh (2) LBW after a successful DRS review, reducing the visitors to 168 for four in the 15th over.

Unfazed, Iyer continued the carnage, smashing Ansari over extra cover and punishing Malinga with three successive boundaries as PBKS crossed the 200-run mark in the 17th over.

Harshal came back strongly in the 18th over, removing Glenn Maxwell and Iyer within three balls to peg Punjab back.

But Marcus Stoinis provided the final flourish, hammering a hapless Shami for four consecutive sixes in the last four balls of the innings, as PBKS finished with a towering total.

CSK Achieve Historic Low After Disastrous Batting Performance Against KKR

A completely disoriented Chennai Super Kings could manage only a paltry 103 for nine, their lowest total at the home ground Chepauk, as Kolkata Knight Riders dished out a clinical bowling show in their IPL match on Friday. It was CSK's third lowest total in the IPL and the lowest by any team in this edition so far. Veteran spinner Sunil Narine (3/13) grabbed three wickets, while Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy got two each after CSK were invited to bat. Nothing went right for CSK in their home ground as they could hit just nine boundaries (4 or 6) in the entire innings. Shivam Dube top-scored with an unbeaten 31 off 29 balls, while Vijay Shankar made 29 after living a charmed life. Only two other CSK batters made runs in double-digit figures.

Lowest 1st innings totals for CKS in IPL

97 vs MI, Wankhede, 2022

103/9 vs KKR, Chennai, 2025*

109 vs RR, Jaipur, 2008

110/8 vs DD, Delhi, 2012

Captaining CSK after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the remainder of the IPL due to an injury, MS Dhoni could only make just one off four balls before getting out in the 16th over after coming out to bat at number nine.

CSK's powerplay woes continued as they made 31 for the loss of two wickets, the second lowest by any team in six overs this season. It could have been much lower but for the 13 runs scored in the sixth over with back-to-back fours from Shankar off Chakaravarthy.

Moeen Ali removed Devon Conway (12) in the fourth over, while Rana got the wicket of Rachin Ravindra (4) in the fifth as CSK were reduced to 16 for 2. The home side would have been three down during powerplay had Narine not dropped Shankar in the fifth over, failing to hold on to a sitter at mid-off.

Shankar's luck finally ran out in the 10th over as he holed out to Moeen, leaving CSK at 61 for 3 at the halfway stage.

KKR tightened the screw over CSK who lost their fourth wicket in the 11th over with the struggling Rahul Tripathi clean-bowled by Narine after a laboured 22-ball 16.

Ravichandran Ashwin came out ahead of Ravindra Jadeja and Dhoni and CSK would rue the decision as the India spin great was out for one run from seven balls.

CSK were in complete disarray when Jadeja (0) came out inevitably in the 14th over but he also lasted just two balls without any contribution, as he nicked to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock, becoming Narine's second victim of the day. The home side were 71 for 6 at that stage.

Deepak Hooda (0) fell in the next over for nought and Dhoni came out only at that stage after CSK were reduced to 72 for 7 in 14.2 overs.

The writing was on the wall for CSK and the Chepauk crowd fell silent when MS Dhoni was adjudged LBW off Sunil Narine. Dhoni opted for a review, seemingly indicating there was bat involved, but the decision stood, further denting CSK's hopes.

The third umpire took multiple looks but ultimately ruled Dhoni out as CSK were reduced to 75 for 8.

More than four overs were left after Dhoni's departure and CSK went past the 100-run mark, thanks mainly to Dube who was attended to by team physio towards the end.

Kohli's Rs 110 Crore 8-Year Contract With Puma Ends, Star Set To Join...

Virat Kohli's long-time association with sports apparel giant Puma has ended, according to several reports. "Sports brand PUMA India confirms the end of its longtime partnership with cricketer and brand ambassador Virat Kohli. PUMA wishes Virat the best for his future endeavours and said it was a wonderful association with him spanning over several years, many outstanding campaigns, and path-breaking product collaborations. As a sports brand, PUMA will continue to actively invest in the next generation of athletes and aggressively build the future of the sporting ecosystem in India," a Puma spokesperson reportedly said.

According to a report in livemint.com, Kohli is going to join sports athleisure firm Agilitas. According to the report, "Agilitas was founded in 2023 by former Puma India and South-East Asia managing director Abhishek Ganguly. The company makes and retails sportswear goods in India and abroad. Last year, Agilitas acquired long-term licence rights for Italian sports brand Lotto in India, Australia, and South Africa."

The report further claimed: "Virat Kohli is reportedly in talks to invest in Agilitas after concluding his eight-year contract with Puma. The announcement is expected soon, coinciding with the IPL, as Kohli aims to create a global sportswear identity."

Virat Kohli has emphasised how the IPL's format and dynamic structure have influenced his T20 game.

While speaking on Jio Hotstar, Kohli highlighted the unique mental and competitive challenges of the IPL and emphasised its dynamic nature compared to shorter bilateral series.

He described how the constantly changing points table created different kinds of pressure, whether it was maintaining a lead, bouncing back from a slump, or battling for a playoff spot. This dynamic environment pushed players to adapt and evolve their T20 skills, ultimately driving them to improve constantly.

"IPL challenges you in a very unique way because of how the tournament is structured. It's not like a short bilateral series; it spans several weeks, and your position on the points table keeps shifting. That constantly changing scenario brings different kinds of pressure. When you are at the top, there's the pressure to maintain that lead. If you're near the bottom, you need extra motivation to bounce back. And if you're somewhere in the middle, where you need to win, say, three out of five games, even a single loss can suddenly add a lot of pressure. This dynamic nature of the tournament pushes you mentally and competitively in various ways other formats don't. It's also driven me to improve and evolve my T20 skill set constantly," Virat Kohli said while speaking on '18 Calling 18' on JioHotstar.

"Chahal Not A Better Bowler Than Vipraj?" Ex-Star Baffled By PBKS' Plan

Former India players Wasim Jaffer and Piyush Chawla questioned Punjab Kings' move of bringing Yuzvendra Chahal too late into the attack during the side's IPL 2025 match vs Chennai Super Kings at Mullanpur on Tuesday. CSK were chasing a target of 220 in the game and Chahal was surprisingly introduced in the 17th over. The leg-spinner, who is the highest wicket-taker in the history of IPL with the tally of 206, got only one over during the entire CSK innings.

Chahal was kept off the attack as it seemed PBKS didn't want to use the leg-spinner against the left-handed batters of CSK. Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra, two left-handed batters, started the innings for the five-time champions. Ruturaj Gaikwad, a right-handed batter, came after Rachin's departure, but his innings could last for just one off three balls. Gaikwad's wicket saw Shivam Dube, another left-handed batter, coming to the crease. Dube got out in the 16th over and only after that Chahal was brought in to bowl as next came right-handed batter MS Dhoni.

"Vipraj Nigam got Shivam Dube out in the previous game. So you are saying Yuzvendra Chahal is not a better bowler than Vipraj? I mean it's in the hindsight, but if he gets him out when he comes to bowl to Shivam Dube at the start, he breaks open the game," Jaffer said on ESPN Cricinfo.

Notably, leg-spinner Vipraj Nigam of Delhi Capitals had dismissed Dube in CSK's game before the latter team faced PBKS.

"I did not like it to be honest. People talk a lot about match-ups. But, he is somebody who is the highest wicket-taker in this league. He got the majority of his wickets on the most difficult ground. Two left-handers at the crease it is okay, he can bowl the wrong'un as well. If Dube takes him for one or two sixes, but you get his wicket at that time, then that pushes CSK more on the backfoot," Chawla said.

PCB Reports More Than Rs 91 Crore In Earnings From Hosting Champions Trophy

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has claimed to have earned three billion PKR (Rs 91 crore) by hosting the ICC Champions Trophy, exceeding its target of two billion rupees. The PCB claim came in a written reply to the National Assembly which expressed its concerns over the persistent under-performance of the national team over the past two years. The PCB in its written response also confirmed that a total of 18 billion rupees are being spent on the upgradation of stadiums in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi.

It said that the complete upgrade process would be completed by 2026 and the second phase would begin after the Pakistan Super League ends in May.

The PCB also said that there have been no budget overruns so far because of the Champions Trophy and other issues.

"The PCB undergoes two audits annually, at the end of its fiscal year. The audits for the current fiscal year will take place after June 30, 2025," the PCB confirmed.

It also said that the final figures of money earned from the Champions Trophy will be determined once the ICC completes its financial audit.

The PCB insisted that there had been no overspending or mismanagement, as the Champions Trophy was entirely managed by the ICC.

On the performance of the national team, the PCBs response was to blame injuries and different playing conditions.

"Key players have suffered injuries at crucial moments, impacting team balance and strategy," the reply read. "The PCB is actively working on strengthening injury prevention and rehabilitation programs." It also highlighted how varying playing conditions across different venues have sometimes hindered the team's adaptability.

The PCB also assured that a robust evaluation system is in place to ensure continuous accountability and improvement in selection, coaching, and fitness.

"The selection committee follows a merit-based approach, evaluating domestic performances, fitness levels, and international exposure. Post-series reviews are conducted to reassess strategies and make necessary adjustments," the board stated.

The board further clarified that transparent selection decisions, effective coaching, and maintaining high fitness standards for players are integral components of their long-term strategy. PTI Corr AT AT

"Burden, Disappointment": Rohit Roasted Brutally After Another IPL Flop Show

Rohit Sharma failed to score big once again as the star Indian cricket team batter was dismissed for 17 during the IPL 2025 encounter between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Monday. It has been a disappointing campaign for Rohit and after missing the previous game due to injury, all eyes were on the experienced campaigner. Rohit started well with two fours and a six but ended up getting clean bowled by Yash Dayal. Rohit's dismissal led to a lot of criticism on social media as fans expressed their thoughts about the star batter and his major lack of form.

Jasprit Bumrah made a much-awaited return to the Mumbai Indians lineup and expectedly bowled well but Royal Challengers Bengaluru rode on quick-fire half-centuries by Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar to post a massive 221/5 in Match 21 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Monday.

Kohli hit some brilliant shots in his 67 off 42 balls, studded with eight fours and two sixes, while skipper Patidar blasted a 32-ball 64 as RCB made the most of some insipid bowling by Mumbai Indians.

Bumrah bowled well within himself and was his usual miserly self in the death overs for figures of 4-0-29-0 while Pandya returned with best figures for MI with 2/45. RCB started well with 73/1 in the power-play, added 78/3 in the middle overs before ending it with 70/2 in the death overs.

Novak Djokovic Plays Down Monte Carlo Masters Hopes After Eye Infection

World No.5 Novak Djokovic, a finalist at the recent Miami Masters, said on Sunday that he did not have high expectations for the Monte Carlo Masters as he was suffering from the effects of an eye infection. Djokovic is a two-time winner in Monte Carlo but has not won any title since taking the gold medal at the Paris Olympics last summer. The hard courts of Miami marked a return to form even though the 37-year-old lost the final in straight sets to Czech teenager Jakub Mensik.

"I'm glad that I found at least in Miami that joy on the court and, I feel, performance level," said the former world No.1 at a press conference ahead of the tournament.

"Let's see if I can carry that into clay.

"It's obviously a completely different surface and I didn't have much time to get used to this tournament, so my expectations are not really high for the results here.

"It's more about trying to get matches and as many as possible, and obviously try to peak towards the end of the clay season which is, of course, most importantly in Paris."

The French Open, which takes place on the red clay of Roland Garros between May 25 and May 8, is the second Grand Slam event of the season, following the Australian Open where Djokovic reached the semi-finals before bowing out, injured, to Alexander Zverev.

The Serb admitted, however, that the eye infection and "a little bit of a viral infection" that he has been dealing with over the last week made him think twice about competing in Monte Carlo.

"It started in semi-finals day in Miami and I did struggle with it in the finals but it's calming down, I guess.

"I'm visiting the doctor later today so let's see. It should be okay."

Given a first round bye, Djokovic will face a second round match against either the Chilean Alejandro Tabilo or another veteran of the circuit, three-time Grand Slam winner Stanislas Wawrinka.

"People talk about my age, but what about him? He's 40 and he's still going strong. I love Stan.

"It would be a nice duel of veterans if we meet on the court."

Fulham End Liverpool Unbeaten Premier League Run To Delay Title Party

Liverpool slumped to just their second Premier League defeat of the season as Fulham struck three times in 14 first-half minutes to boost their own European ambitions with a 3-2 win on Sunday. Arsenal's 1-1 draw at Everton on Saturday left Liverpool needing just 11 points from their final eight games to secure a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title. Arne Slot's men were unbeaten in 26 league games and looked set to take another step towards the title when Alexis Mac Allister's stunning strike opened the scoring. But poor defending allowed Ryan Sessegnon, Alex Iwobi and Rodrigo Muniz to turn the game around for Fulham.

"It's not often we concede three goals let alone in one game or 15 minutes," said Slot.

"Conceding three goals like we did is not of the standards of Liverpool."

Liverpool still enjoy an 11-point lead at the top with seven games remaining.

Victory lifts Fulham to eighth and within three points of the top five, which is almost certain to be enough for a place in next season's Champions League.

"Our first half was really at a high level. To be able to have 10 shots and score three goals in the first half," said Fulham boss Marco Silva. "We had a good dynamic, good tempo, high energy."

Despite a stellar first season under Slot, Liverpool have shown signs of slowing down in recent weeks and came off the rails in west London.

After a Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain and League Cup final defeat to Newcastle, Liverpool edged out Everton 1-0 in a feisty Merseyside derby on Wednesday to get back to winning ways.

But the Reds appear to be running out of steam after challenging in four competitions for most of the season.

Mac Allister's blistering long-range strike into the top corner after 14 minutes gave Liverpool the dream start.

- Sloppy defending -

The Reds then wilted in the Craven Cottage sunshine, with a series of individual errors leading to Fulham's three quickfire goals.

Curtis Jones, deputising out of position at right-back, failed to control Andreas Pereira's cross and the ball fell kindly for Sessegnon to fire home his third goal in five games.

Andy Robertson then had a nightmare for Fulham's second.

The Scotland captain gave away possession deep in Liverpool territory, then could only head an attempted clearance into the path of Iwobi, whose shot deflected in off Robertson.

The normally unflappable Virgil van Dijk was at fault for the third as Muniz outmuscled the Dutchman and produced a brilliant low finish under Caoimhin Kelleher.

Diogo Jota was denied by Bernd Leno early in the second half with a big chance to reduce Liverpool's deficit.

It was not until Slot turned to his bench to introduce Luis Diaz, Conor Bradley and Harvey Elliott that the visitors sparked into life.

Mohamed Salah has not scored in his last four league games and wasted a big chance to break that drought when he turned Diaz's inviting cross over.

Bradley teed up Diaz to find the bottom corner and set up a grandstand finish 18 minutes from time.

Elliott hit the bar against his former club as Liverpool pushed in vain for an equaliser late on.

"The second half performance was outstanding. We had chances, but in the end we lacked time," added Slot.

Chelsea Manager Maresca Slams "Unfair" Scheduling After Premier League Draw

Enzo Maresca insisted Chelsea's "unfair" schedule forced him to drop out-of-form forward Cole Palmer for Sunday's 0-0 draw at Brentford. Maresca's side had 24 hours less than Brentford to prepare for the west London derby after beating Tottenham 1-0 on Thursday. England star Palmer was eventually sent on by Maresca after an hour, but he was unable to break the deadlock, lifting his best chance over the crossbar in stoppage-time. Although Palmer has struggled for much of his second season with Chelsea -- failing to score in his last 12 games in all competitions -- Maresca was adamant it was the fixture list that was behind his axing against Brentford.

"We prepared the game in the way it was. We played a demanding game Thursday night," the Italian said.

"A tricky game, a sunny day, the pitch was dry, they tried to kill the tempo, but we did more than enough to win the game. The only thing we missed was the goal.

"We played Thursday night so not all of them were 100 percent. The idea was to start in one way and finish in another. The plan nearly worked. Overall the change between the first and second half was not enough to win the game.

"Was the scheduling unfair? I think so, at this stage of the season. We tried to adapt. Thursday night was a demanding game.

"We said many times when this is a transition game, it was demanding, compared to today. Yes, 24 hours makes a difference."

Brentford manager Thomas Frank agreed that the extra day was significant, with his side also affected by the fixture schedule this season.

Warming to the theme, the Dane went on to label the Club World Cup in June and July, which Chelsea are participating in, as "ridiculous".

"It's just another tournament. Will I watch it? No chance!" he added.

Next up for Chelsea is a UEFA Conference League quarter-final trip to Legia Warsaw on Thursday, but Maresca's priority is still qualifying for the Champions League.

"For sure, that's very important," he said. "Our target is to bring this club to where it needs to be, in the Champions League.

"Since day one we are up there, hopefully we can finish there."

Chelsea currently occupy fourth place in the Premier League, with a top-five finish likely to be enough to secure Champions League football next season.

Atletico Snatch 93rd-Minute Winner, Stay Alive In La Liga Title Race

Pablo Barrios snatched Atletico Madrid a 2-1 victory at Sevilla on Sunday to provide Diego Simeone's side a lifeline in the Spanish title race. After leaders Barcelona drew on Saturday and Real Madrid fell to a home defeat, third-placed Atletico had the chance to gain back some ground on their rivals. Lucien Agoume sent Sevilla ahead with a long-range effort and Atletico levelled through a Julian Alvarez penalty in the first half, before Barrios struck in the final stages.

Atletico's draw at Espanyol last weekend left them virtually out of the title race, and despite their last-gasp victory they trail Barcelona by seven points with eight matches remaining.

"We needed this, to come to Sevilla is a hard place to go... the team, after the blow of conceding the first goal, pulled together and got the result we wanted," Atletico midfielder Koke told Movistar.

"We deserved the win and this is the line we have to follow... let's see where we get to."

Sevilla took the lead early on when Atletico cleared a cross to the edge of their box, with Agoume arriving to thump the ball past Jan Oblak.

Atletico levelled when Conor Gallagher burst into the box and was bundled over by Loic Bade.

Alvarez, who had a penalty controversially disallowed for a supposed double touch on the ball as Atletico were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid, dispatched it with ease.

The Argentina international sent Orjan Nyland the wrong way for his 12th league goal of a strong debut season at Atletico after joining from Manchester City last summer.

Oblak made a good save to deny Akor Adams, with Sevilla appealing for a penalty unsuccessfully after the goalkeeper collided with the striker in the aftermath.

Oblak also denied Chidera Ejuke at his near post, while Alvarez threatened sporadically for the visitors at the other end.

With the match heading for a draw, Barrios stepped up to snatch his side victory in the 93rd minute.

The 21-year-old drove forward before stroking home his first of the season with an accurate low effort as the shot opened up for him on the edge of the box.

'Last Match': Amid Dhoni Retirement Rumour, Speculation On Sakshi Video

The fans kept waiting for the thunderous sixes, helicopter shots, and mesmerising hits to the boundary from Mahendra Singh Dhoni. But they did not come on Saturday, as Chennai Super Kings lost another match in their den. The wait continued, MS Dhoni's bat failed to talk on this day and the legend trudged back to the dug-out as the social media erupted in disbelief, watching the man fade into the twilight.

For years acknowledged as one of the best finishers in white-ball cricket, Dhoni failed to guide Chennai Super Kings to victory against Delhi Capitals in Match 17 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday.

Dhoni ended with an unbeaten 30 off 26 balls as CSK lost by 25 runs, ending with 158/5 from 20 overs with Vijay Sharkar not out on 69.

Ahead of the match, visuals showed MS Dhoni's parents in the stadium. It started a speculation that Dhoni might retire. Then, however, CSK coach Stephen Fleming clarified that Dhoni is 'still going strong'. Then a video clip went viral where MS Dhoni's wife is talking to their daughter Ziva. While her conversation was not audible at all, several users claimed she said: "Last match'. Many claimed the video was telecast during the last over of the match which CSK lost.

With CSK chasing 184, Dhoni came in to bat at 74/5 in the 11th over after Ravindra Jadeja got out, trapped lbw by fellow spinner Kuldeep Yadav. With nearly nine overs in hand and 110 more runs needed, for the die-hard CSK fans, the stage was set for "Thala" to step in and guide the team home, sealing a memorable win with a last-ball six, just like in the 2011 World Cup final at the Wabkhede.

But on Saturday, the 43-year-old Dhoni failed to create the old magic and looked like a shadow of himself as he struggled to get the ball away as CSK slumped to a 25-run defeat, their first to the Delhi team at Chepauk in 15 years.

Dhoni shared an 84-run partnership with Vijay Shankar, which is CSK's highest for the 6th wicket in IPL, breaking the record of 73 between Hussey and S Badrinath, but in the end, it proved insufficient.

Dhoni could not provide the innings the thrust it needed towards the end was virtually tied down by Mukesh Kumar and Mitchell Starc as CSK needed 67 runs in the last three overs. The required rate continued to climb and Dhoni did manage to hit a four and a six, but that was too little to help CSK.

The thing that will hurt Dhoni and his fans the most is that his debacle came with his family including his parents, wife, and daughter in the stands. There were reports that before the match, MSD had sought his father Pan Singh Dhoni's blessings. Social media was rife with proclamations that Dhoni was set to announce his retirement from IPL cricket, just as abruptly as he quit Test cricket and ODI.

Dhoni played many dot balls in his knock, which caused a buzz on social media with many people seeking his retirement and others feeling sad seeing a legend struggling to guide the team to victory.

"MS Dhoni's reputation is built on years of leadership, consistency, and unmatched calmness, but sometimes even legends face moments where people question their choices," said a fan on X, formerly Twitter.

"As a diehard Dhoni fan, I'm requesting @ChennaiIPL to drop MS Dhoni for the next few matches. Give his spot to youngsters like Shaik Rasheed or Vansh Bedi. We already have Conway for wicketkeeping. So, Dhoni not necessary in playing 11," wrote another fan.

Some fans also made memes on Dhoni playing a dot ball on a free hit while some others suggested that this was a good time for him to retire.

Since the start of IPL 2025, there has been a lot of curiosity about how Dhoni, who will be turning 44 in a couple of weeks, will handle things. He was praised for his brilliant stumpings -- especially for dismissing Suryakumar Yadav of Mumbai Indians. But his batting came under fire when he came to bat at No.9 in one match and failed to score many runs in the other.

Saturday's struggle to properly execute the finisher's role, for which he is renowned, takes further fuel to the fire

Adani Invitational Golf: Saptak Talwar Bags Maiden Title With Thrilling Win

Saptak Talwar of Greater Noida ended a long wait for his maiden title after he outshined his nearest rivals at his home course with a flawless final round of five-under 67 at the Rs 1.5 crore Adani Invitational Golf Championship 2025 played at the Jaypee Greens Golf & Spa Resort in Greater Noida. The 26-year-old Saptak's (67-72-69-67) superb last round effort lifted him two spots from his overnight third position. Talwar, who had previously posted two runner-up finishes on the PGTI since turning pro in 2021, ended the week with a winning total of 13-under 275 and a one-stroke victory margin.

"I remember the last PGTI tournament here in 2013, I was giving my exams and I came here to watch the final round and those memories are still fresh in my mind. To have my first win at Jaypee Greens, in the Adani Invitational feels fantastic," Talwar told IANS.

Talwar, who studied at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut, USA, prior to turning professional, picked up the winning cheque worth INR 22,50,000 that propelled him from seventh to fourth position in the PGTI Order of Merit.

Overnight joint leaders Arjun Prasad (68-69-69-70) of Delhi and Chandigarh's Yuvraj Sandhu (70-67-69-71) finished second and third at 12-under 276 and 11-under 277 respectively.

Saptak Talwar, who was two off the lead at the start of round four, enjoyed a hot start on Friday as he capitalized with birdies on the first two par-5s, the second and fourth holes. Saptak then added two more birdies on the fifth and 10th using his wedges to great effect. He narrowly missed a five-feet eagle putt on the par-5 12th where he picked up his fifth birdie of the day.

Talwar, who had made three three-putts for bogeys earlier in the week, then saw it home with pars on the last six holes. He made a crucial par save from eight feet on the 16th that helped keep his card bogey-free and gave him the momentum towards the end.

Arjun, also searching for his first title, produced five birdies and three bogeys during his fourth round of 70. Arjun had the opportunity to take the match into a playoff before he bogeyed the final hole.

"The tournament was fantastic, the way it was organized was amazing. Having Adani as one our sponsors for the event is fantastic. As far as my game goes, I think I played pretty well and just fell short towards the end but I am very happy with the way I have been playing throughout this season," Arjun told IANS.

Yuvraj Sandhu, a two-time winner on the PGTI this season, sank five birdies on the last day but an early double-bogey and two bogeys on the back-nine put him out of contention as he signed for a 71.

There was a hole-in-one by Sri Lankan N Thangaraja on the 14th during his fourth round of 71. He secured tied 17th place at two-under 286.

Nineteen-year-old Sukhman Singh of Greater Noida, the lone amateur to make the cut, won the prize for the best performance by an amateur. Sukhman totaled six-over 294 for the week to finish tied 46th.

Adani Enterprises Director Pranav Adani, present at the event, lauded the proceedings and congratulated the winners after the conclusion of the tournament.

"I'm sure all the winners and players had a good game today. It is truly our privilege, as the Adani Group, to be associated with and have a partnership with PGTI for the Adani Invitational Championship Cup. Sport has always been close to our hearts as a group. I believe that a growing India - a growing country - needs sportsmen who can make the nation proud," said Adani during the prize ceremony.

SRH Star Bowls With Left, Right Arm In Same Over vs KKR. Internet Confused

Kamindu Mendis is a rarity in cricket. The Sri Lankan can bowl with both arms and his talent was on display at the IPL 2025 in the match between SunRisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday. He only bowled one over in the match and picked the wicket of KKR half-centurion Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Though it was the ambidextrous bowler's debut match in IPL, Mendis has been a consistent performer for Sri Lanka. He has played 12 Tests, 19 ODIs and 23 T20Is.

The IPL in its official x handle wrote: "Confused?"

Defending champion Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) posted a competitive total against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Match 15 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Eden Gardens, thanks to a remarkable late-innings acceleration spearheaded by Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh.

KKR finished their innings at 200/6 in 20 overs, recovering from early setbacks with a dynamic middle-order partnership.

The KKR opening partnership, which had failed to find momentum in previous games, endured another underwhelming outing. Sunil Narine and Quinton de Kock could not provide the explosive start the team desired.

After a quiet first over, de Kock miscued a pull shot off Pat Cummins and was caught in the deep for just one (6 balls). Narine followed soon after, edging an over-pitched delivery from Mohammed Shami to the keeper for seven (7 balls). KKR were left struggling at 17/2 in three overs, bringing captain Ajinkya Rahane and young Angkrish Raghuvanshi to the crease.

With KKR in trouble, Rahane and Raghuvanshi stabilized the innings with calculated aggression. The duo took advantage of short deliveries, keeping the scoreboard ticking with well-timed boundaries and excellent running between the wickets. Rahane hit three sixes and played fluently before falling for 38 (27 balls) while attempting a reverse sweep against Zeeshan Ansari.

Raghuvanshi, displaying maturity beyond his years, brought up his second IPL fifty off just 30 balls. However, his impressive innings of 50 (32 balls, five fours, two sixes) came to an end when he sliced Kamindu Mendis' off-spin to deep backward point. At 109/4 in 13.2 overs, KKR had lost both set batters, shifting the responsibility to their middle-order.

With the innings at a critical juncture, Venkatesh Iyer (60 off 29 balls) and Rinku Singh (unbeaten 32 off 17) took charge. Initially cautious, the duo unleashed a flurry of attacking strokes in the death overs. Venkatesh found his rhythm with powerful shots off Simarjeet and Shami, while Rinku ignited KKR's charge with three consecutive fours off Harshal Patel in the 17th over.

The 19th over bowled by Cummins proved to be the turning point, as Rinku smashed 4,6,4,4,2,1, reaching his fifty in just 25 balls. The final partnership yielded 91 off just 41 balls, at a stunning run rate of 11.25.

KKR's late surge saw them add 91 runs in the last seven overs, propelling their total to 200 in 20 overs. The innings was defined by Venkatesh Iyer's anchoring role and Rinku Singh's fearless hitting, putting the pressure back on SRH's bowling attack.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Breaks Silence On Quitting Mumbai In Domestic Cricket

Yashasvi Jaiswal has taken a sudden decision that sent shockwaves in domestic cricket around the country. Jaiswal wrote to the Mumbai Cricket Association on Tuesday, expressing his wish to leave Mumbai for Goa, and the governing body swiftly accepted his request. Jaiswal's shock move will see the left-handed 23-year-old play for Goa from the 2025-26 season where he could be appointed captain, though it remains to be seen how much time he would be able to give to the state side given the packed international calendar.

Now, Yashasvi Jaiswal has opened up on his decision. "It was a very tough decision for me. Whatever I am today is because of Mumbai. The city has made me who I am, and all my life, I will be indebted to the MCA," Jaiswal told The Indian Express.

"Goa has thrown me a new opportunity and it has offered me a leadership role. My first goal will be to do well for India and whenever I'm not on national duty, I will be playing for Goa and try to make them go deep into the tournament. This was an (important) opportunity which came my way and I just took it."

Jaiswal last played for Mumbai against Jammu and Kashmir in their Ranji Trophy Group A league round match from January 23-25 following the strict implementation of the BCCI directives that all India players should play domestic cricket if not on national duty.

"Yes, it is surprising. He must have thought of something to make such a move. He has requested us to relieve him and we have accepted his request,” a senior MCA official told PTI on Wednesday.

“He wants to play for us and we welcome him. He will be playing for us from the next season,” Goa Cricket Association's secretary Shamba Desai told PTI talking about Jaiswal's move.

Jaiswal could well captain Goa when he is not on national duty.

"Yes, that can happen,” he replied when asked if Jaiswal could be a captaincy candidate for the state.

"He plays for the Indian cricket team so he can be the captain and we will work in the direction to appoint him. Regarding his availability (for the domestic competitions), we are yet to speak,” he added.

Jaiswal is the third cricketer from Mumbai in recent times to have moved to Goa after Arjun Tendulkar and Siddhesh Lad.

Lad and Tendulkar had moved to Goa ahead of the 2022-23 season.

The right-handed batter Lad served his cooling-off period before making a successful return to Mumbai last season in the Ranji Trophy.

Jaiswal has been India's first-choice opener since making his Test debut against the West Indies in July 2023 and since then he has played 19 games, cementing himself with stellar performances on the biggest stage.

He averages more than 52 in Tests including four hundreds and 10 fifties.

LSG Spinner Gives Fiery Send-Off After Dismissal, Faces Gavaskar's Criticism

Lucknow Super Giants spinner Digvesh Rathi gave a fiery send-off to Punjab Kings opener Priyansh Arya during their IPL 2025 encounter on Tuesday. During the third over of the PBKS innings, Priyansh ended up miscuing a shot off Digvesh's bowling and the ball went high up in the air. Shardul Thakur moved across from mid-on and completed an easy catch to give LSG their first breakthrough. Rathi immediately ran towards the batter and made a gesture that signified that his name was added to his notebook of dismissals. The spinner was instantly called by the on-field umpire who had a brief chat with him.

The entire incident left legendary Indian cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar unhappy as he criticised Digvesh's antics. Gavaskar was not in favour of such a send-off and said that batters do not make such gestures every time they hit a boundary against the bowlers.

Punjab Kings enjoyed the fruits of a fantastic bowling effort in the Powerplay as Lucknow Super Giants posted a par-score of 171 for 7 on a tricky Ekana Stadium surface in an IPL match on Monday.

On a track that seemed two-paced with variable bounce, Punjab Kings bowlers led by the ever-dependable Arshdeep Singh knocked off the top order within first six overs and contributions from in-form Nicholas Pooran (44 off 30) and Ayush Badoni (41 off 33 balls) wasn't enough to put a challenging score on board.

Punjab's bowling performance on Monday was the perfect definition of doing it in unison as spinners Glenn Maxwell (1/22 in 3 overs) and Yuzvendra Chahal (1/36 in 4 overs) complemented the pacers Lockie Ferguson (1/26 in 3 overs), Arshdeep (3/43 in 4 overs) and Marco Jansen (1/28 in 4 overs).

Credit should also be given to skipper Shreyas Iyer, whose intelligent field placements also ensured that LSG were never in control of the situation.

On a track, where certain deliveries were gripping and odd ball bounced a tad extra, only Pooran looked comfortable against both pacers and spinners.
