Updated IPL 2025 Points Table After MI vs KKR Match, Orange Cap, Purple Cap

Mumbai Indians registered their first points in the IPL 2025 in great fashion with a comprehensive show against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders.  Ashwani Kumar's record four wicket-haul on IPL debut and Ryan Rickelton's 62 not out powered Mumbai Indians to an eight-wicket win. The 23-year-old Ashwani from Punjab's Jhanjeri became the first Indian ever to to take four wickets on IPL debut as he ended with figures of 3-0-24-4 to blow away KKR's star-studded batting lineup.

With the win, MI have climbed up to the sixth spot. KKR, on the other hand, are last in the points table. As far as the IPL's highest scorer is concerned, Lucknow Super Giants' Nicholas Pooran holds the Orange Cap with a tally of 145. The highest wicket-taker currently is Chennai Super Kings' Noor Ahmad, as he holds the Purple Cap with nine scalps.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

With only four senior T20 matches in his kitty apart from four List A games and two Ranji Trophy matches, Ashwani's rich returns heralded the domination shown by MI's seamers.

Deepak Chahar (2/19), Trent Boult (1/23) and Hardik Pandya (1/10) ensured a collective bowling performance as KKR crumbled for the lowest total of this season, rolling over for just 116 in 16.2 overs.

Even as Rohit Sharma (13) endured another forgettable outing, Ryan Rickelton (62 not out off 41 balls, 4x4s, 5x6s) made his first impact on the IPL stage as Mumbai Indians went over the line with 7.1 overs to spare. Suryakumar Yadav hit a quick 9-ball 27 not out and ended the game with a six behind the wicket.

The left-handed South African Rickelton survived initial challenges from KKR pacers to fight back with a flurry of boundaries for his maiden half-century in the competition and helping his side record their first win of the season.

Left-arm seamer Ashwani accounted for Ajinkya Rahane (11), Rinku Singh (17), impact sub Manish Pandey (17) and Andre Russell (5) to break the Knight Riders' back after Chahar and Boult made early inroads in the powerplay.

KKR had a forgettable start when their openers Quinton de Kock (1) and Sunil Narine (0) fell inside the first two overs and by the end of the powerplay, the visitors had limped to 41 for four.

Boult outsmarted Narine with a fuller one which swung away to clean him up in the first over.

In the next over, Chahar had de Kock caught at mid-off with Ashwani timing his jump perfectly to complete a sharp grab.

Rahane hit a six and a four to counterattack but perished soon after for Ashwani's maiden wicket on his first ball.

The Punjab seamer lured Rahane outside the off and KKR skipper obliged, albeit hitting in the air with the ball flying to deep backward point to Tilak Varma, who showed quick reflexes to complete the catch after the ball popped out.

Angkrish Raghuvanshi (26) looked the most promising when he began with a couple of attractive fours on both sides of the wicket and also hit Ashwani into the stands for one of the few sixes which KKR hit.

But Raghuvanshi was also guilty of throwing it away when he hit one short ball meekly off Hardik Pandya (1/10) and Naman Dhir did a fine job running from deep square leg to take the catch.

Pandey, pressed into service as an impact sub with KKR reeling at 45 for five, could not make the opportunity count and was cleaned up by Ashwani in the 11th over.

Dhir was in action again when Rinku danced down the track to smash a short ball from Ashwani two balls later but was caught at deep point and the MI fielder also took a fine diving catch in front of him at deep midwicket to dismiss Harshit Rana and help Vignesh Puthur add one wicket to his tally.

Barcelona Thrash Girona 4-1, Move 3 Points Clear Of Real Madrid In La Liga

Robert Lewandowski bagged a brace as Barcelona eased to a 4-1 victory over Girona to move three points clear at the top of La Liga on Sunday. After second-placed Real Madrid pulled level on points with them on Saturday by beating Leganes, Hansi Flick's side restored their advantage at the Olympic Stadium. Lewandowski responded to Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe's double with one of his own to stay three goals ahead in the race for Spain's golden boot. Barcelona, unbeaten this year in 20 matches, took the lead through a Ladislav Krejci own goal near the end of the first half.

Arnaut Danjuma pulled Girona level but Lewandowski netted twice and Ferran Torres finished off the rout.

Girona beat Barcelona twice last season but have struggled to hit those heights again and sit 13th.

"We played with patience, we had a plan and if we play with that plan we can always score a lot of goals and win the game," veteran striker Lewandowski told DAZN.

The 36-year-old said he had the legs to keep playing for seasons to come.

"I know a lot of people are talking abut my age but... I want to play more years at the top level," said the Poland international.

"I feel very good physically, I think looking at the stats there's no difference now to a few years ago."

Flick rotated some of his usual suspects with the Copa del Rey semi-final clash against Atletico Madrid in mind.

Barca were below their free-flowing best in the first half despite dominating, occasionally threatening through the dynamic running of teenage star Lamine Yamal and frantic energy of Fermin Lopez.

Paulo Gazzaniga saved well from Lopez on the counter-attack after Viktor Tsygankov blazed over Girona's first decent opportunity.

Gazzaniga saved well from Lewandowski and then Yamal, who also fired over.

Barcelona wanted a penalty when Fermin was brought down by Yaser Asprilla on the edge of the box and a free-kick was given.

A VAR review showed the contact was inside the area but the referee decided Lopez fouled Asprilla as they came together, much to Barcelona's chagrin.

- Breakthrough -Gazzaniga produced a sensational save with his fingertips to push out a Ronald Araujo header but Barca found a way through before half-time.

Yamal's dangerous free-kick aimed at Eric Garcia was deflected into his own net by Krejci at the near post.

Girona had produced very little of note in the first half but were back level eight minutes into the second through Danjuma.

Daley Blind played the Dutch striker through and he beat Wojciech Szczesny with a clinical low finish.

However Barcelona were swiftly back in front as La Liga's top goalscorer Lewandowski notched his 24th of the campaign.

Lopez nodded the ball across the six-yard box and Lewandowski contorted his body to reach it and flick it between Gazzaniga's legs.

The forward secured Barcelona's victory with his 25th, slotting home after substitute Frenkie de Jong pushed forward into space and fed him.

There was time for Torres to add a fourth after Gerard Martin found him and the brilliant Yamal to bend a strike against the crossbar.

This was remarkably the 20th time this season Flick's side have scored four goals or more from 45 games, with a potential treble in their sights.

"In the first half we had the game under control but lacked the final ball, but in the second half we played more attacking, made more chances and scored some goals, that's the most important thing," added Lewandowski.

"F*** Off": Hardik Pandya Involved In Ugly Staredown With GT Star. Watch

In a controversial moment during the 9th match of Indian Premier League 2025, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya and Gujarat Titans' star spinner R Sai Kishore were involved in a staredown. Such furious was the face-off that Hardik even ended up yelling "F*** off" to the spinner. The incident took place in the 15th over of the MI chase. Kishore started with two dot balls to Hardik before the batter slammed a four. The next delivery was also a dot ball and this is when the drama took place.

Watch it here:

Hardik Pandya returned to lead the Mumbai Indians as the five-time champions won the toss and elected to bowl first against Gujarat Titans in ninth match of IPL 2025 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday.

Both teams entered the match on the back of defeats in their respective opening games. Hardik had missed MI's season opener against Chennai Super Kings due to a one-match ban he copped for maintaining a slow over rate last year.

Apart from Hardik, spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman was also included in the playing eleven of MI, with Robin Minz, Will Jacks and Vignesh Puthur, who took 3-32 against CSK on debut, making way. Minz, however, came in an impact substitute later in the second innings.

"The simple reason is we don't know how the pitch will play, plus the dew factor. It's always better to bat second on the black-soil pitch. Only last year we played on black soil, otherwise we have been playing on red soil. Last year, we had the game under wraps but couldn't finish it."

"The prep has been fantastic, the boys are excited and we back each other, be there for each other. Very happy stage. I come back, and the others we are keeping the options open. Always about playing good cricket, planning right and enjoying the game," Hardik said.

GT skipper Shubman Gill said he would have looked to bowl first as well and that his playing eleven is unchanged. "Batted first plenty of times here, so nothing changes for us. It is all about assessing the conditions and seeing what target we can set, and if we are chasing it is about how to get to that target."

"Plenty of positives from the last game, we just got slow in the middle and that post us, but still we managed to score about 200 runs in 14 overs. We have got the same team, might see one change with the impact sub. We want to have a lefty - righty (opening) combination, and Jos has been playing at three for England, so nothing changes for him," he said.

Bengaluru Register Historic Win Over MCFC, Move Into ISL Semi-Finals

Bengaluru FC pulled off the biggest win in ISL playoffs history, thrashing Mumbai City FC 5-0 to progress to the semifinals in Bengaluru on Saturday. Suresh Singh Wangjam (9') opened the scoring, followed by goals from Edgar Mendez (42'), Ryan Williams (62'), Sunil Chhetri (76'), and Jorge Pereyra Diaz (83'), with Bengaluru converting five out of their six on-target shots into goals. Bengaluru FC will face FC Goa in the semifinals across two legs on April 2 and April 6, while Mumbai City FC have been eliminated from the competition. The Blues discovered early inroads through Ryan Williams in the ninth minute, as the attacker laid in a low cross inside the Mumbai City FC box.

Thaer Krouma could not control the pace put behind the pass though, leading to a disarrayed interception that was met by Suresh Singh Wangjam and drilled into the bottom right corner.

The visitors had a chance to equalise 13 minutes later, as Brandon Fernandes stepped up on a corner kick and served in a probing delivery for Nathan Rodrigues. The latter met the cross perfectly but nodded it off target on his left side.

Situation got complicated for the Islanders when Williams earned a spot-kick before the half-time, as he was brought down in the penalty area by Hmingthanmawia Ralte.

Edgar Mendez converted the opportunity with impeccable ease, depositing the ball into the centre of the goal in the 42nd minute to double the Blues' lead.

Bengaluru FC continued to be offensive despite having a two-goal cushion.

Suresh pressed proactively to win the ball back near the halfway mark in the 62nd minute and pierced open Mumbai City FC's high defensive line with a slick pass that resulted in Williams receiving it on the right side and slotting into the bottom left corner of the net past Phurba Lachenpa.

Chhetri joined the scoring spree in the 76th minute with a long-distance stunner that caught the Islanders aback.

As the Islanders pushed numbers ahead to cut the deficit, they ended up conceding ample space at the back and Jorge Pereyra Diaz spotted and served Chhetri a straightforward pass that the striker shot from outside of the box to the high centre of the goal with exceptional accuracy.

Diaz got his name on the scoresheet against his former team, as Alberto Noguera, also an ex-Mumbai City FC star, showed timely awareness to lay the striker a pass in the middle of the box in the 83rd minute.

The forward pounced upon the chance, netting the ball into the bottom right corner to cap off a captivating five-star performance for the home side.

Dravid Opens up On Promoting Parag Up At No. 3 Ahead Of RR vs CSK Game

Having spent his first five Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons primarily as a finisher, Riyan Parag experienced a breakthrough campaign in 2024. Elevated to No. 4 in the batting order, he emerged as Rajasthan Royals' leading run-scorer, playing a pivotal role in their journey to the playoffs. This season, Parag has been handed an even greater responsibility, moving up to No. 3 as Rajasthan Royals aim to maximize his potential. Head coach Rahul Dravid has hailed him as one of their best batters. However, his start to IPL 2025 has been modest, with scores of 4 and 25 in RR's opening two matches. Sunday's clash against Chennai Super Kings presents his final opportunity to register a significant score on his home ground, as Guwahati will host RR's last match of the season.

"That's the right word to use, that he's promoted," Dravid said, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.

"Look, Riyan is one of our best batters, let's be honest. And we want to give him as many balls as we possibly can. Twenty overs is a very short time and the more balls Riyan Parag bats for us, the better it is for us as a team," he added.

"But of course, these things we'll keep looking at, we'll keep assessing, we'll keep seeing how it goes. And yeah, we know that Riyan has done really well at No. 4, so it gives us an option," Dravid noted.

"But honestly, the move to No. 3 was a positive move to try and give him more time to bat. And we know how destructive a player he is and if he gets more time, then he can score more runs and that can benefit the team. So that was the thinking, but we can always assess that and we can always see how it's going. And I think he's quite comfortable, he's more than capable of batting at any position," he said.

In addition to his batting responsibilities, Parag has also stepped in as Rajasthan Royals' captain in the absence of regular skipper Sanju Samson, who is still recovering from a finger injury. With Samson limited to batting as an impact substitute, Parag has taken charge of leading the side. The task has been challenging, with RR suffering defeats in their first two matches, but Dravid remains supportive of the 23-year-old. Having first coached Parag as a 16-year-old in 2017 during his tenure with India's Under-19 team, Dravid continues to back him, believing in his talent and leadership potential.

"I think he's adapted really well," Dravid said, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.

"It's not easy to captain when the team is scoring 280 runs [Sunrisers Hyderabad] on a flat wicket. The first game is probably a tough game to be a captain. But I think the calmness that he showed and the fact that it didn't seem like our team was panicking was really good," he said.

"Even in the game against KKR [Kolkata Knight Riders], his brave decision to bring himself on [with the ball], realising that the wicket was turning, with two left-handers batting, to bowl the fifth over in the powerplay was a brave decision and a correct decision. So I think he's been very impressive. As a captain, it's nice for him to get this opportunity till Sanju is able to field again. And he's sharing his thoughts and his ideas. Very clear. He's very solid in that sense," he noted.

"So, yeah, very impressive early days. And it's very nice for us as, again, a team that's looking to develop people and players. Of course, it's unfortunate that Sanju was not able to captain and play for us. But I think in a way it's nice that we were able to give Riyan, our vice-captain, a chance to captain in a few games and give him that exposure and experience as well," he said.

"Lowest Point": Internet Slams Dhoni For Batting At No. 9 For CSK Against RCB

MS Dhoni came out to bat at No. 9 for Chennai Super Kings but it was a case of too little too late as his side slumped to a 50-run loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Friday. Chasing 197, CSK kept losing wickets at regular intervals and Shivam Dube was dismissed in the 13th over, the expectation was that Dhoni will come out to bat. However, it was R Ashwin who joined Ravindra Jadeja out in the middle and by the time Dhoni came out in the 16th over, the match was almost out of CSK's hands. The ex-India captain remained unbeaten on 30 off 16 balls but it made no difference to his team's fortunes. The fans were not happy with Dhoni coming out to bat so late and they took to social media to express their views.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Chennai Super Kings by 50 runs in their Indian Premier League match on Friday.

Chasing a target of 197, CSK ended up at 146 for 8 in 20 overs, their first defeat to RCB at Chepauk since 2008.

Opener Rachin Ravindra top-scored for CSK with 41 while the next best batter was former captain MS Dhoni who remained not out on 30 off 16 balls.

Josh Hazlewood (3/21), Yash Dayal (2/18) and Liam Livingstone (2/28) were the main wicket takers for RCB.

Earlier, RCB posted 196 for 7 after being put in to bat at the Chepauk.

Captain Rajat Patidar top-scored with 51 off 32 deliveries while openers Phil Salt (32 off 16 balls), Virat Kohli (31 off 30 balls) and Tim David (22 not out off 8 balls) were the other notable contributors.

For CSK, Noor Ahmad (3/36) was the pick of the bowlers while Matheesha Pathirana (2/36), veteran Ravichandran Ashwin (1/22) and pacer Khaleel Ahmed (1/28) chipped in with wickets.

IPL 2025: KKR vs LSG Clash At Eden Gardens Rescheduled. Reason Is...

The BCCI on Friday rescheduled the IPL match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants from April 6 to April 8 owing to Ramanavami festivities. While the match will be played a couple of days later as against the original schedule, it will be held in Kolkata itself and not in Guwahati as earlier speculated. “The decision follows a request from Kolkata Police to the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) regarding the deployment of personnel across the city owing to festivities,” the BCCI said in a press release. “The authorities have recommended that the game be moved to Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at 3:30 PM, and the request has been accommodated accordingly,” it added.

Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President Snehashish Ganguly had earlier told PTI that they had requested the BCCI to reschedule the game.

"We have informed the BCCI to reschedule the match, but there is no scope for rescheduling the game in the city later and I'm now hearing that it's going to be shifted to Guwahati," Ganguly had said on March 20.

The board said the rest of the schedule remains unchanged, which will now have only one match on April 6 (Sunday) -- the fixture between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans in Hyderabad.

“Tuesday, April 8, will be a double-header match day, featuring the KKR vs LSG fixture in the afternoon in Kolkata, followed by Punjab Kings hosting Chennai Super Kings (Match No. 22) in New Chandigarh in the evening, as per the original schedule,” the board added.

Who Is Prince Yadav? LSG Pacer Who Bowled SRH's Head In IPL 2025

Prince Yadav became the talk of the town in the SunRisers Hyderabad vs Lucknow Super Giants match. The 23-year-old Delhi pacer took the important wicket of Travis Head as SRH were restricted to 190/9 in 20 overs. Yadav finished with figures of 4-0-29-1. Right arm pacer Prince Yadav attained fame at the Delhi Premier League. He played under LSG captain Rishabh Pant in the 2024 DPL for Purani Delhi 6. He took 13 wickets in 10 matches. That performance saw him making white-ball debut for Delhi. Lucknow Super Giants picked him up for INR 30 lakh. He took 11 wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 trophy with an economy rate of 7.54, finishing as Delhi's highest wicket-taker. He was also Delhi's highest wicket-taker in the Vijay Hazare Trophy with 11 wickets.

Talking about the match, Shardul Thakur continued his dream comeback with a four-wicket haul to help Lucknow Super Giants restrict a power-packed Sunrisers Hyderabad to 190 for nine in an IPL match here on Thursday. Opting to bowl, Shardul (4/34) gave LSG a fiery start, removing Abishek Sharma and last match centurion Ishan Kishan in consecutive balls in the third over.

Shardul sent packing Sharma with a short delivery before getting Ishan Kishan caught behind off an innocuous delivery down the leg side. Travis Head (47 off 28), however, looked in ominous form as he took the attack to the opposition and used his brute power to deal in boundaries and sixes.

Head was particularly brutal against Avesh, who sprayed the ball on both sides, with the Australian hitting him for two sixes and one four to pick up 18 runs in the fourth over.

Head, however, was lucky as he got two reprieves.

Head skied Ravi Bishnoi's first ball down the ground, and Pooran stationed at long-on had all the time in the world to get under the ball and take a simple catch but the West Indian put it down.

The missed chance proved costly as Head slammed Bishnoi over covers for a maximum.

Bishnoi had another chance to claim the wicket of Head in the fifth ball of the sixth over but he failed to latch on to a difficult return catch.

But Head's luck finally ran out when fast bowler Prince Yadav disturbed his timbers to pick up his first IPL wicket.

Henrich Klaasen (26 off 17) was looking dangerous but got out in a bizarre fashion, run out by Yadav off his own bowling as a straight drive from Nitish Reddy ricocheted on to the sumps from the bowlers follow through.

Young Aniket Verma played a 13-ball 36-run cameo that included five sixes but fell to leg-spinner Disvesh Rathi, caught by David Miller.

SRH skipper Pat Cummins (18 off 4) hit three sixes of his first three balls before departing.

IPL 2025 Highlights: Quinton De Kock Anchors KKR's 8-Wicket Win Over RR

Quinton de Kock struck a magnificent 97 not out on a tacky Barsapara wicket, anchoring Kolkata Knight Riders' chase to perfection as they secured a dominant eight-wicket win against Rajasthan Royals in their IPL clash on Wednesday. Opting to bowl, KKR's disciplined bowling attack, led by their spin duo Varun Chakravarthy (2/17) and Moeen Ali (2/23), restricted Rajasthan Royals to a below-par 151/9. In response, De Kock remained 97 not out from 61 balls, his knock laced with eight fours and six sixes, as KKR comfortably chased down the target in 17.3 overs.

Despite the challenging nature of the surface, De Kock displayed controlled aggression, timing the ball beautifully while ensuring KKR's chase remained on track.

The chase was never in trouble, with the required run rate hovering around a run-a-ball.

KKR lost Moeen Ali (5) and skipper Ajinkya Rahane (18) early, but De Kock held one end firm, finding an able partner in young Angkrish Raghuvanshi 22 (17 balls).

The duo stitched together an unbroken 83-run partnership that came off just 44 balls, sealing the first win of the season for the defending champions.

The Proteas keeper-batter was at his fluent best, preferring groundstrokes over aerial risks, yet still finding boundaries with ease.

He took calculated risks, fully aware of the modest target.

He took the attack to Jofra Archer, smashing him for a four and a six in the same over.

He brought up his half-century in just 35 balls, swiping Wanindu Hasaranga for a towering six over wide long-on -- his third of the innings.

The Royals may have overplayed their spin options, allowing KKR's batters to settle into a rhythm.

Hasaranga, who had dismissed De Kock twice in the past, was dominated in this matchup.

A more aggressive approach -- bringing in Jofra Archer during the middle overs -- could have added pressure, but English speedster was brought in as late as 18th over with KKR needing just 17 runs from 18 balls.

It was just a formality as De Kock welcomed him with a boundary before launching him for two sixes to wrap it up in a canter.

Earlier, Chakravarthy and Ali dismantled the Royals' middle order, picking up two wickets each in successive overs right after the powerplay, shifting the momentum in KKR's favour.

Seamer Vaibhav Arora (2/33) was expensive but chipped in with two crucial wickets -- regular Royals skipper Sanju Samson (13 off 11) with a yorker in the powerplay before dismissing impact substitute Shubham Dubey (9) cheaply.

Harshit Rana (2/36) was instrumental at the death, breaking Dhruv Jurel's promising innings of 33 (28) and removing the dangerous Shimron Hetmyer for just 7, both in the crucial penultimate over.

A quickfire cameo 16 from 7 balls from Jofra Archer ensured that they reached 150-mark but he fell to Spencer Johnson (1/42) in the penultimate ball of their innings.

RR had looked set for a big total at 54 for 1, with a well-set Yashasvi Jaiswal (29 off 24) and local lad Riyan Parag (25 off 15) at the crease.

Riyan, leading the Royals for the first time at his home ground, began with intent, smashing Harshit Rana for a six over square leg off just the third ball he faced.

Riyan, who knows the Barsapara pitch like the back of his hand, played the shot of the innings in the next over -- a beautifully timed lofted drive off Vaibhav Arora, sending the ball soaring straight down the ground.

Jaiswal, dropped on 19, capped off the powerplay with a six as RR finished the first six overs strongly at 54/1.

However, KKR struck back immediately. Chakravarthy, their mystery spinner, triggered the collapse in the seventh over, dismissing the dangerous-looking Parag with a well-disguised 113kph delivery.

India, Bangladesh Play Out Goalless Draw In 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers

India did not get the start they were looking for in their 2027 AFC Asian Cup third round qualifying match as they played out a goal-less draw against familiar rivals Bangladesh on Tuesday. Bangladesh were slightly the better side in the first half with more attacking moves and corner kicks but without any clear-cut chances. India put up a much better performance in the next 45 minutes, putting Bangladesh under a lot of pressure but the chances were few and far between.

In the 12th minute, India goalkeeper Vishal Kaith committed a mistake as he kicked the ball into an opposition player. Mohammed Ridoy pounced on the deflection and sent a left footer from an angular position into the open net but Subhasish Bose produced a goal-line clearance.

India's best chance came in the 31st minute but Udanta Singh's header off a Liston Colaco cross from left failed to beat Bangladesh goalie Mitul Marma.

In a dominant second half display for India, Bose made an audacious long range effort which beat the Bangladesh goalkeeper all the way but missed the left corner of the net by inches in the 68th minute.

Five minutes later, Farukh Choudhary's right footer went just wide after a deflection from a Bangladeshi defender.

The 84th minute saw star striker Sunil Chhetri getting a free header inside the Bangladesh box but his effort lacked direction and power.

Bangladesh midfielder Hamza Choudhury, who is currently playing for Sheffield United on loan from English Premier League side Leicester City, could not do much for most part of the match.

India had come into the match after a 3-0 thrashing of Maldives on March 19 in an international friendly to mark talismanic striker Chhetri's return to national colours and Manolo Marquez's first win as head coach.

Marquez made five changes from the team that vanquished Maldives, bringing in Boris Singh Thangjam, Udanta Singh Kumam, Lalengmawia Ralte, Sandesh Jhingan and Farukh Choudhary.

He also handed over the captain's armband to Jhingan and looked like he had his plans firmly in place on a slippery pitch of the lush green Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Yet, Bangladesh had an opportunity to grab the lead within a few seconds of the start when Kaith's unsteady clearance landed straight to Mojibor Jony. To the relief of the Indians, the Bangladesh midfielder's shot crashed against the side net.

The next foray also came from Bangladesh. Mohd. Shakil Topu danced down the right and crossed in the goalmouth for Mohd Shariar Emon to take a header that sailed over the bar. In the first 15 minutes, the visitors tormented the Blue Tigers' defence with vigour and energy.

After surviving the storm, India slowly settled down to take charge of things and make inroads in the rival defence with encouraging domination in the midfield, and created a few positive chances later in the first half and then in large stretches of the next 45 minutes.

The two sides face each other again on November 18 in Bangladesh.

India's next qualifying round match, though, will be against Hong Kong on June 10 in Kowloon.

India are placed in Group C of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifying third round along with Bangladesh, Hong Kong and Singapore, and only the top team after six home and away matches qualifies for the continental showpiece.

Pant Flops On LSG Debut With 6-Ball Duck, 'Rs 27 Crore' Memes Follow

Rishabh Pant's debut for Lucknow Super Giants was a forgettable one as a batter on Monday as he got out for a six-ball duck in his team's IPL 2025 opener against Delhi Capitals. Pant's former team Delhi Capitals staged a strong comeback after Nicholas Pooran (75) and Mitchell Marsh's (72) blitz to keep Lucknow Super Giants to a sub-par 209 for 8 in their Indian Premier League contest on Monday.

With no assistance off the pitch, LSG openers went off the blocks quickly with Marsh bludgeoning half dozen of sixes and an equal number of boundaries, including a 21-ball fifty for his fastest half-century. And Pooran dazzling with his stunning strokeplay to make 75 off only 30 balls with 7 sixes and 6 fours.

LSG appeared set for a total in excess of 240 at one stage, but riding on a splendid spell from Kuldeep Yadav (4-0-20-2) and Mitchell Starc's 3/42, Delhi Capitals applied brakes on their opponent's charge with tremendous success. Much was expected from Pant as he came to bat at No. 4 but he could not open his account.

Social media was ruthless after his dismissal and many referred to his IPL salary of Rs 27 crore.

LSG, who were cruising at 133 for one in the 12th over, staggered through the second half to add only 76 runs in the last eight overs while losing six wickets.

Marsh took charge early on to 21 runs off the third over from compatriot Starc to make intentions clear. On a placid track, Marsh made merry as he connected with sheer power and timing to leave Delhi scrambling for answers as each of his stroke appeared to have brought desired results.

Even as Vipraj Nigam provided a breakthrough in form of Aiden Markram (15) inside the powerplay, there was no let-up for the Capitals as LSG raised to their second fastest team 100 in 8.1 overs.

A pivotal moment in the innings arrived in the seventh over when Sameer Rizvi spilled a regulation catch to give Pooran a reprieve, off Nigam while fielding at backward point.

Pooran's mishit went straight to the fielder who had to move a few steps back to grab the ball but it popped out of his hands.

The left-handed Caribbean batter made Delhi pay a heavy price for the mistake in the following overs, especially in the 13th when he smacked Tristan Stubbs for four consecutive sixes to collect 28 runs off it.

Pooran was belligerent against spin and pace alike, clearing the ropes at will to set up the platform for a massive total with his 87-run stand off 42 balls with Marsh, but LSG squandered it.

There was disappointment in store for new LSG skipper Rishabh Pant, who fell for a six-ball duck with Kuldeep, who helped Delhi pull things back in control. Kuldeep varied his pace and used flighted deliveries putting the batters in two minds whether to play from the crease or step out.

David Miller fought till the end but found no support as wickets kept tumbling. However, his 19-ball 27 with two sixes and a four at least took LSG past the 200-run mark in the final over.

"That Was Scary...": Cummins Left In Awe Of Demonic SRH Batting Display

Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Pat Cummins said it was “scary” to see the way his batters were clobbering the bowlers in the IPL, and he himself would not want to operate against them. In the latest instance of the run carnage, SRH made 286 for six to hand a 44-run drubbing to Rajasthan Royals here on Sunday. “I wouldn't be wanting to bowl to our batters. Unbelievable. That was scary. You know it's going to be tough (for the bowlers) but when you get such a big score, one over can win you. We have been able to keep the core of the side together,” said Cummins during the post-match presentation ceremony.

Hyderabad pacer Harshal Patel said having a massive score on board was helpful for bowlers in the belter of track at the Uppal Stadium.

“I felt we were better with the execution barring a few overs. It helps when you have nearly 290 on the board. There's a fine line between being defensive and being aggressive, and it depends on the context of the game.

“There will be times when we need to go hard on the stumps but when you have 270-280 on the board, our job gets easier since we have to just bowl defensive,” said Patel, who bowled well in the back end of the RR innings.

Royals stand-in skipper Riyan Parag defended the decision to bowl first on a flat track, saying it was a “collective decision.” “It was tough, just like I expected and credit to SRH but we could have executed better. I feel collectively we took that decision (to bowl first), and it was the right decision but it was about executing better,” he said.

Henry Ruled Out, Jamieson Replaced In NZ's Squad For Last Two T20Is vs Pak

Right-arm quick Matt Henry has been ruled out of New Zealand's last two T20Is against Pakistan and will continue "his injury rehabilitation programme." New Zealand Cricket (NZC) released a statement on Saturday to confirm the experienced quick's omission from the series, "BLACKCAPS pace-bowler Matt Henry has been ruled out of the remainder of the KFC T20I series against Pakistan as he continues his injury rehabilitation programme." Despite a shoulder injury, Henry was included in New Zealand's squads for the fourth and fifth T20Is against Pakistan. Henry injured his right shoulder during the recent ICC Champions Trophy semi-final win against South Africa. He has also been managing an ongoing left knee issue.

Canterbury pace-bowler Zak Foulkes, who was named for the first three T20Is, has been retained for the remainder of the series. The 22-year-old returned with figures of 1/11 (three overs) in the first game and 0/32 (three overs) in the second game.

Another notable tweak in the Kiwis' squad is Kyle Jamieson's absence from the last two games of the five-match affair. He delivered a Player of the Match performance in the series opener with searing figures of 3/8.

After an explosive start to the series, Jamieson toiled hard during New Zealand's defeat in the third T20I. He floundered in causing trouble to Pakistan's inexperienced batters and turned out to be expensive, with figures of 0/54. Will O'Rourke has come in to replace Jamieson.

New Zealand are currently leading the series 2-1 after the first three games. The hosts kicked off the five-match affair with back-to-back wins. The Men in Green bounced back in the third clash by chasing down a herculean 205-run total and sealing a 9-wicket win, keeping the series alive.

New Zealand squad for last two T20Is vs Pakistan: Michael Bracewell (capt), Finn Allen, Mitchell Hay (wk), Tim Robinson, Tim Seifert (wk), Mark Chapman, Zakary Foulkes, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Jacob Duffy, Will O'Rourke, Ben Sears, Ish Sodhi.

Japan First To Seal 2026 FIFA WC Spot As South Korea, Australia Get Closer

Japan became the first team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup on Thursday as South Korea were held but still inched closer along with a rampant Australia. Daichi Kamada and Takefusa Kubo scored in the second half to give Japan a 2-0 home win over Bahrain and take their place alongside hosts the United States, Canada and Mexico at next year's finals. The runaway Asian Group C leaders failed to sparkle on a chilly night in Saitama until substitute Kamada pounced for the opener in the 66th minute. In front of nearly 60,000 fans, Kubo added another in the 87th minute as Japan sealed their berth in style.

It will be their eighth straight World Cup appearance.

"I'm relieved that we could qualify at home in front of our supporters," said Kubo, before he and his team-mates doused coach Hajime Moriyasu with water.

"This here is not our goal -- we want to compete against strong teams at the World Cup."

Australia are in pole position to qualify out of Group C with Japan.

Two goals in two minutes helped the Socceroos secure a 5-1 thrashing of Indonesia as Dutch legend Patrick Kluivert was well beaten in his first game in charge.

Japan lead on 19 points. Australia are second on 10 points, four clear of the chasing pack of Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Bahrain and China.

Australia have three games left to play, starting with a crunch away fixture against China on Tuesday.

The top two go straight to North America, with teams finishing third and fourth in the three Asian groups going into a further round of qualifying.

Indonesia missed an early penalty before a Martin Boyle spot-kick and a Nishan Velupillay strike inside a frantic opening 20 minutes did the damage at Sydney Football Stadium.

A brace from Jackson Irvine and another by Lewis Miller sealed a big win, but Australian skipper Mat Ryan was not entirely satisfied.

"I think the scoreline flatters us a little bit to be honest," the goalkeeper said.

"At the start of the game they had two big chances, and if they put one of them away, it could have been a different game."

- Oman late leveller -

South Korea are still on course for 2026 but conceded a goal with 10 minutes left as Oman snatched a precious 1-1 away draw.

The hosts looked set for all three points after Wolves striker Hwang Hee-chan put them ahead in the first half with a clinical finish after Lee Kang-in's superb threaded through ball.

But Ali Al Busaidi struck from just outside the box to stun most of the crowd at Goyang Stadium.

South Korea still lead Asian qualifying Group B with 15 points and three matches left to play, starting at home to Jordan on Tuesday.

Iraq are second in the group on 11 but have played a game less.

Jordan are third on nine with Oman fourth on seven.

PCB Told To Revoke Babar, Rizwan's Central Contracts: "They Get Rs 60 Lakh"

Former Pakistan pacer Sikandar Bakht has lashed out at captain Mohammad Rizwan and other top cricketers for refusing to playing the National T20 Championship. This comes after Rizwan opted to play club cricket rather than participate in the National T20 Cup. Bakht feels the players are employees of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and they should participate in every competition organised by the board. The cricketer-turned-commentator added that the players are not being paid Rs 60 lakh per month to play club cricket.

"They are employees of the Pakistan Cricket Board. They get 60 lakh per month, so they must play in the tournaments the PCB is organising. The buck stops with PCB. They have to make sure that players are available," Bakht said during a discussion on Geo News.

Bakht also suggested PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi to strip them off central contracts.

"This shouldn't happen. Mohsin Naqvi needs to be strict. He comes off as a polite person, but he needs to change his ways. You have to ask what is happening. Be strict. Stop their central contracts," he added.

Rizwan, instead, was spotted on Sunday playing a club cricket match in Peshawar as photographs of him playing no-look shots were highlighted on social media.

Rizwan, who normally makes it a point to play in domestic cricket when there are no international commitments, has apparently opted to play club cricket as he recently returned after performing Umrah in Mecca and wants to relax before going to New Zealand for the three-match ODI series.

Apart from Rizwan, the likes of Babar Azam and Naseem Shah also skipped Pakistan's National T20 Championship initially.

However, the duo featured for Lahore Blues in their match against Karachi Whites on Tuesday. However, both had tough outings on return to domestic cricket.

As per Cricket Pakistan, Babar opened the batting for Lahore Blues in their second match of the T20 tournament, scoring just 22 runs off 17 balls, including three boundaries.

Naseem, on the other hand, had a challenging day with the ball. He gave away 41 runs in his four overs and failed to take a wicket.

Rizwan, Babar and Naseem were all dropped by the national selectors for the ongoing five-match T20 series in New Zealand with a new-look Pakistan side losing the first game by nine wickets.

The trio will be back in action for the upcoming ODIs vs New Zealand.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner To Play In Hamburg After Doping Ban Ends

World number one Jannik Sinner will play the ATP tournament in Hamburg from May 18-24 after his doping ban ends in the build-up to the French Open, organisers confirmed Tuesday.

"For the first time in his career, Jannik Sinner will compete at the 2025 Hamburg Open," tournament organisers confirmed on social media.

The 23-year-old agreed to a three-month ban in February after admitting "partial responsibility" for team mistakes which led to him twice testing positive for traces of the banned anabolic steroid clostebol in March 2024.

The reigning US Open and Australian Open champion's suspension ends on May 4, allowing him to return in time for the French Open, the second Grand Slam event of the year.

The clay-court tournament in Hamburg will be Sinner's second event after his return as he will also compete on home soil at the Italian Open in Rome from May 7-18.

Sinner reached the French Open semi-finals last year. This year's tournament is scheduled to run from May 25 until June 8.

Arsenal Edge Out Chelsea, Fulham Beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0

Chelsea's challenge for a place in next season's Champions League faltered in a toothless 1-0 defeat at Arsenal on Sunday as Fulham beat Tottenham 2-0. Mikel Merino scored the only goal of a disappointing contest at the Emirates as Arsenal pulled clear in second place and to within 12 points of runaway leaders Liverpool. Chelsea badly missed the presence of the absent Cole Palmer due to injury as they meekly surrendered to a damaging defeat for their hopes of a top-four finish.

The Blues remain in fourth for now but have five sides from Manchester City in fifth to Aston Villa in ninth within four points of Enzo Maresca's team.

Both managers are hoping to be stronger after the upcoming international break.

Bukayo Saka is nearing a return for Arsenal, while Maresca is confident of having Palmer, Nico Jackson and Noni Madueke back when they are next in action at home to Tottenham on April 3.

"We did enough to deserve to win the game," said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta. "Now we have the international break so let's take a chance to breathe and bring some players back hopefully."

Arsenal have struggled badly for goals since the loss of Kai Havertz to a season-ending injury forced midfielder Merino into a makeshift centre-forward role.

The Spanish international proved the match winner from a corner as he looped a header from Martin Odegaard's delivery inside the far post on 20 minutes.

Chelsea barely threatened but were nearly gifted a route back into the game when David Raya fumbled Marc Cucurella's shot and the ball trickled wide.

At the other end, Chelsea's Robert Sanchez made a brilliant stop to prevent Merino doubling Arsenal's lead with the best effort of the second half.

But the game petered out with little goalmouth action as a limp performance will do little to quieten the critics of Maresca's style of play among the Chelsea support.

"There was not a big difference in the two games between us," said Maresca. "Given the injuries, we fought until the end."

Spurs' European hangover

Tottenham kept their season alive by reaching the Europa League quarter-finals with victory over AZ Alkmaar on Thursday, but suffered the latest in a series of European hangovers at Craven Cottage.

Victory for Fulham propels Marco Silva's men into the race for Champions League places as they climb to eighth, four points off the top four and three outside the top five.

A top-five finish will almost certainly secure a place in Europe's top club competition next season thanks to the strong performance of English sides in European competitions.

Spurs, though, have struggled to handle the burden of Thursday nights when it comes to their Premier League form.

Ange Postecoglou's side have won just three times in the 10 league matches that have followed a midweek Europa League fixture.

"It's been a difficult campaign for sure," said Spurs captain Son Heung-min.

"But I feel we've lost too many games that we should have got stuff out of, and this was one of those games."

Fulham had to wait until 78 minutes to take the lead when Rodrigo Muniz steered home from Andreas Pereira's pass.

Ryan Sessegnon then curled in a brilliant second against his former club to secure victory late on.

Spurs remain down in 13th, now 10 points off the top half.

Manchester United are in action later on Sunday when Ruben Amorim's team visit lowly Leicester.

On Rohit Not Retiring From ODIs, Ponting's Clear Verdict: "Goal In Mind..."

Australia legend Ricky Ponting believes Rohit Sharma is still going strong and a sense of unfinished business was behind his decision to continue playing and leading India in the 50-over format until the 2027 ODI World Cup to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Barring the ODI World Cup, Rohit has won all ICC titles while captaining India. He came agonisingly close to laying his hands on the 50-over world title at home in 2023, only to lose to Australia in the final.

Speaking on The ICC Review, the former Australia skipper said Rohit is pretty clear about his future goals.

"When you start getting to that point of your career, everyone's waiting for you to retire. And I don't know why, when you can still play as well as he's played (in the Champions Trophy final), I think he was just trying to put those questions to bed once and for all and say, 'no, I'm still playing well enough. I love playing in this team. I love leading this team.' "And I think, the fact that he said that, to me, it means that he must have that goal in mind of playing in the next (50-over) World Cup (in 2027)," Ponting stated.

Handed the responsibility of captaincy in 2021 at the age of 34, Rohit on Sunday clinched his second ICC title -- following the T20 World Cup win last year -- as India defeated New Zealand by four wickets to win the Champions Trophy in Dubai.

Chasing 252, Rohit, 38, led from the front with an 83-ball 76 at the top to set the platform for a comfortable win.

In the run-up to the tournament, there were talks around Rohit's retirement from the ODI format after the Champions Trophy, as he had retired from T20Is after winning the T20 World Cup.

But Rohit simply rejected the theories at the post-match press conference following the final.

"One more thing, I'm not going to retire from this format, just to make sure no more rumours are spread," Rohit told reporters after winning the player-of-the-match award.

Ponting said the urge to win the only missing ICC trophy in his cabinet, the ODI World Cup, might be behind Rohit's mind to prolong his career.

"I think probably the fact that they (India) lost the last one and he was captain, that might be the thing that's playing on the back of his mind," the Australian said.

"Just have one more crack at trying to win the T20 World Cup, the Champions Trophy, and the ODI World Cup.

"I mean when you see him play like he played in the Champions Trophy final, you wouldn't say that his time is up just yet," Ponting added.

Bangladesh's Mahmudullah Bids Farewell To International Cricket

Bangladesh's veteran all-rounder Mahmudullah has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable career spanning over 17 years. The 39-year-old announced on social media on Wednesday, expressing gratitude to his teammates, coaches, and fans who supported him throughout his journey. “I have decided to retire from international cricket,” Mahmudullah posted on Facebook. “I would like to thank all of my teammates, coaches & especially my fans who have always supported me. A big thank you to my parents, my in-laws—especially my father-in-law—and most importantly, my brother Emdad Ullah, who has been my coach and mentor since childhood.”

He also acknowledged his wife and children, calling them his "support system through thick & thin. "In a heartfelt message, he mentioned his son Raeid, who will miss seeing him in Bangladesh's red and green jersey.

Mahmudullah's decision was not entirely unexpected. Earlier, he had informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) that he would not seek a central contract beyond February 2025. His retirement follows that of Mushfiqur Rahim, whose place in the national team, like Mahmudullah's, had been under scrutiny after the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy qualification.

One of Bangladesh's most dependable middle-order batters, Mahmudullah is the only cricketer from the country to have scored three centuries in ODI World Cups. Two of those came during the 2015 edition—against England and New Zealand—where he played a crucial role in Bangladesh's historic run to the quarterfinals. His third ton came in the 2023 edition, further solidifying his legacy on the biggest stage.

Mahmudullah's career numbers speak volumes of his impact on Bangladesh cricket. He represented the country in 239 ODIs, 50 Tests, and 141 T20Is, playing key roles in numerous victories.

Whether it was his composed batting under pressure, his off-spin bowling, or his leadership, he remained a pillar in Bangladesh's cricketing journey.

As PL Title Dreams Fade, Arsenal Set To Switch Focus To 'Exciting' UCL

Mikel Arteta said Arsenal are focused on "fighting to win every game" even though their Premier League dream appears to be over as they eye the next round of the Champions League. The second-placed Gunners trail Premier League leaders Liverpool by 15 points after Sunday's 1-1 draw at Manchester United extended their winless league run to three matches. It is a crushing disappointment for Arsenal, who have finished as runners-up to Manchester City for the past two seasons. Arsenal, who have one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals after their 7-1 first-leg away win over PSV Eindhoven last week, host the Dutch side at the Emirates in Wednesday's reverse fixture.

"We are going to carry on fighting to win every game," Spanish coach Arteta said at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

"There are the demands we put on ourselves in every competition. We are very much conscious that the demands for this football club are to reach the highest level and to win football matches.

"There's always improvement. We have talked about what we can do better, it's about execution. My job is to give the players as many tools so we can deliver again."

Despite missing injured forwards Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz, Arsenal had six different scorers in their crushing victory over PSV.

The Gunners, who have never won the Champions League, will face the winners of the tie between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the next round should they advance, as expected, on Wednesday.

"It's a competition that we have a lot of enthusiasm for. We have been very consistent and tomorrow can put us in an exciting position," Arteta said.

France international defender William Saliba is keen to help guide his side to their first trophy since Arsenal's 2020 FA Cup triumph against Chelsea.

"I think we are very close, we need to keep going," Saliba said, referring to Arsenal's trophy ambitions.

"We can't stop working. When you're close and don't win trophies it's sad. With work we will make a big step and I am sure we will arrive there.

"Everyone wants to win the Champions League, it's a competition that's hard to win, anything can happen."

CT 2025 Review: India's Spin Quartet, Iyer's Consistency, Rohit's Template

India overcame a stiff challenge from New Zealand in the final of the 2025 Champions Trophy and defeated their ICC-tournament nemesis by four wickets in a thriller at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday night. The spin quartet were the heroes for India in the evening with the wrist spinners – Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy - causing severe damage to the top order while Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel choked the flow of runs in the middle overs. Skipper Rohit Sharma led the way with his aggressive template in the powerplay while Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul maintained a cool and calm head in tense moments in the run-chase.

We look at a few numbers which defined India's victorious campaign at the 2025 Champions Trophy.

India – the best batting and bowling unit

India had a combined batting average of 41.72 in the tournament. Although, Australia and South Africa were marginally higher, India played all their encounters on the bowler-friendly Dubai wicket. Australia played only one match in Dubai whereas South Africa benefitted from playing all their encounters on placid tracks in Pakistan. Just for perspective, New Zealand, who played two matches in Dubai, had a batting average of 25.23 at the venue and a corresponding strike rate of 74.73. Lahore had the highest batting average in the competition of 40.69 while Dubai was at the bottom with a corresponding average of 30.77.

India also had the most potent bowling unit in the tournament despite the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. They had the best bowling average (27.32) and economy rate (4.8) in the competition. While the Indian spin quartet stood out and had a combined average of 28.38 – the best in the tournament, the pacers did not do badly either and remarkably also topped the charts in terms of bowling average (25.7).

India – the most lethal spin bowling unit

India's new spin quartet exploited the favourable conditions in Dubai brilliantly and combined to take 26 wickets – the most for any spin unit in the tournament.

They had the best average (28.38), strike rate (37.7) and economy (4.51) in the tournament. Varun Chakravarthy was the pick of the Indian spinners with nine wickets at 15.1 apiece at an economy of 4.5. Six of his nine dismissals were of the top 6 opposition batters. He picked up a couple of crucial wickets in the powerplay where he conceded just 33 runs off 30 deliveries in the tournament.

Kuldeep Yadav was the highest impact bowler in the final changing the match on its head with his twin blows of Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson in successive overs. He returned with seven wickets in the tournament while Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel were phenomenally restrictive bowling a tight line and length and had a combined economy of 4.35 in the tournament.

Interestingly, it was New Zealand who were the second-best spin bowling unit of the tournament with the second-best bowling average (30.45) and strike rate (37.9). Mitchell Santner was exceptional in the middle overs and returned with nine wickets at an average of 26.7 and economy of 4.8! Off-spinner, Michael Bracewell was the real surprise package though with eight wickets at 25.12 apiece at an economy of 4.1. He bowled a sensational 174 dot balls – the most for any bowler in the tournament!

Rohit's aggressive template

Rohit Sharma led by example and continued with his aggressive powerplay template which has brought rich dividends to India post their early ouster in the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. The Indian skipper has since emphasized on maximizing the scoring opportunities in the first 10 overs focusing on getting runs instead of conserving wickets.

It was Rohit's 76 off 83 deliveries which gave India the impetus at the start in the run-chase in the final before the New Zealand spinners tightened the screws in the middle overs. Rohit hammered 153 runs off just 137 deliveries at a rate of 111.7 in the powerplay in the tournament which eased the pressure considerably on the middle-order. He has a scoring rate of 122.56 in the powerplay since 2023 which is the second-highest in this phase of play (min. 200 runs) only after Travis Head

Shreyas' magical consistency

Shreyas Iyer was India's batter of the tournament. He did not score big runs but made invaluable contributions in almost every encounter scoring tough runs under pressure. Iyer was the second-highest run-getter of the tournament with 243 runs in five innings which included two half-centuries.

A match-defining 114-run stand with Virat Kohli against Pakistan, weathered the storm from 22/2 (which worsened to 30/3) and top-scored against New Zealand, an under-pressure 45 against Australia in the semi-final and finally a crucial 48 at a critical juncture against New Zealand in the final – Iyer was phenomenally consistent, delivering the goods in almost every encounter when his team needed him the most. Iyer has been in top-notch form since his return to the Indian unit for the ODI series against England.

He has an aggregate of 424 runs in eight matches and a strike rate of 93.6 which includes four fifties and two other high-impact forties.

KL Rahul – Mr Cool

KL Rahul produced three high-impact performances with the bat under high-pressure in the tournament, showcasing a calm head and excellent temperament. He came out to bat at a tricky 144/4 against Bangladesh and put together a match-winning unbeaten stand of 87 with Shubman Gill

Rahul then eased tensions with a classy undefeated 42 off just 34 deliveries in the semi-final against Australia. In a tense final, Rahul walked out to bat at 183 for 4 and held his nerve scoring an unbeaten 34 off 33 deliveries taking India through to a memorable four-wicket win with an over to spare.

Henry To Miss CT 2025 Final? NZ Captain Breaks Silence On Star's Injury

New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner said India's understanding of the conditions has made the Champions Trophy final a “challenging” assignment, but expressed confidence in his team's ability to adapt. The Kiwis are eyeing their first ICC ODI title on Sunday, following their victory in the 2000 KnockOuts Trophy, where they defeated India in the final in Kenya. “We know India are going to be a challenge. They've been playing some very good cricket. They understand these conditions pretty well,” said Santner in the pre-match press meet on Saturday.

Santner hoped the experience of playing against India a few days back here in a league match will stand his side in good stead.

“I think, obviously, having the run against India a few days ago will definitely help us out, understanding the conditions a little bit better.

“But it is a knockout game. And I guess whoever turns up on the day could take home the trophy,” he added.

The final is expected to be played on the same surface as the one that was used in India's group match against Pakistan.

Santner said the team will have to be ready to adapt irrespective of the nature of the pitch.

“We came up against a good side and on a spinning wicket, especially in the second inning (of the last match). We know India are probably going to go in with the same team.

“But we know it might be a different surface. So, I think we have to be ready and be adaptable for what's coming,” he said.

In that context, Santner hoped that the New Zealand batters will face mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who took five wickets in the previous match, better in this match.

“I think guys will be better for the run against Varun. He's obviously a world-class bowler, we've seen it here and obviously in the IPL and that little bit of mystery. But it was the first time some of the guys have been facing him. I think they'll learn from the other day.” Santner said the team has viewed the videos of Chakravarthy's bowling a bit more coming into the final.

“If the pitch plays a similar way, it's going to be a challenge along with all three of their other spinners. We have looked at a little bit more footage.

“I think we obviously know what his threats are now. That 115K arm ball, that got me (in the last match) and that was a bit of a threat, but yeah, we know he's going to be a challenge,” he added.

Premier New Zealand pacer Matt Henry has been nursing a shoulder niggle, and Santner said a final call on his availability for the final will be taken later.

“So we'll be going across the road and training after this. And Matt's going to have a bowl just to see how he is. Yeah and then I guess we'll make a call after that,” he said.

Mumbai Indians Power To Victory, UP Warriorz Playoff Hopes All But Over

Hayley Matthews smashed a 46-ball 68, while Amelia Kerr registered her best figures of 5/38 as Mumbai Indians progressed to a six-wicket win over UP Warriorz in the Women's Premier League here on Thursday. The former champions chased down 151 in just 18.3 overs, boosting their net run rate and jumping to second in the table with eight points, two behind leaders Delhi Capitals with a game in hand. This was UP Warriorz's third consecutive defeat, leaving them on the brink of elimination.

Chasing a modest 151 on a dew-laden Ekana Stadium, MI lost Amelia Kerr (10) early, but Matthews took charge, hammering a 35-ball fifty in a match-winning 92-run stand with Nat Sciver-Brunt, the partnership coming off just 58 balls.

She played fluently off the back foot, especially through the off-side, and reached her second half-century of the season against UPW with a crisp boundary between point and cover-point.

She dismantled Chinelle Henry with a towering six over deep midwicket before sweeping Sophie Ecclestone for back-to-back boundaries as MI raced to 50/1 in the powerplay.

Though UPW skipper Deepti Sharma pulled off a stunning catch to break the partnership, dismissing Sciver-Brunt (37 from 23 balls), MI needed just 35 off 43 balls by then.

In the next over, Matthews tore into seamer Kranti Goud, smashing a boundary through deep cover before launching a six over deep backward square leg.

However, her explosive 46-ball 68, laced with eight fours and two sixes, came to an end in the same over.

But it was Yastika Bhatia (10 off six balls) who smashed UPW skipper Deepti Sharma for two boundaries in the penultimate over to seal the chase with nine balls to spare.

Earlier, opting to bowl, MI turned the game on its head with the New Zealand legspinner Kerr becoming the sixth player in WPL history to bag a fifer.

At 74/0 in 7.5 overs, they looked set for a 200-plus total, with Voll (50 off 29) blazing her maiden WPL fifty.

Voll, playing just her second game, attacked Kerr with four consecutive boundaries, using her feet aggressively after sent into her preferred opening slot.

However, MI struck back, taking three wickets in 14 balls.

Matthews removed Grace Harris (28) after being hit for a six, while Kerr dismissed Kiran Navgire (0) and Voll, who shuffled across for a scoop but was bowled by Sciver-Brunt's slower ball, in the 15th over.

Kerr delivered the knockout punch in the final over, picking up two wickets, including the in-form Chinelle Henry (6), who had smashed a huge six before falling into MI's trap.

UPW crumbled from 74/0 to 150/9, losing nine wickets for just 76 runs in the last 12.1 overs.

Umpires Announced For Champions Trophy Final

Australia's Paul Reiffel and England's Richard Illingworth will be the on-field umpires, while Sri Lanka's Ranjan Madugalle will be the match referee for the Champions Trophy final between India and New Zealand here on Sunday. Reiffel, 58, a former Australian fast bowler with more than 200 Test and ODI wickets, was one of the on-field umpires during South Africa's semifinal against New Zealand in Lahore. Illingworth, 61, a former England left-arm spinner, was part of the action in India's last-four clash against Australia in Dubai.

Illingworth, the four-time ICC Umpire of the Year, also stood in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India and the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Americas.

He was also the umpire in the group match between India and New Zealand, which the former won by 44 runs.

India defeated Australia by four wickets in Dubai to secure a place in the final, while New Zealand beat South Africa by 50 runs in the other last-four clash.

List of officials: On-field Umpires -- Paul Reiffel and Richard Illingworth; Third Umpire -- Joel Wilson; Fourth Umpire -- Kumar Dharmasena; Match Referee -- Ranjan Madugalle.

Mohammed Shami Disappointed With This ICC Law: "You Are Not Getting...":

India pace spearhead Mohammed Shami has broken ranks by admitting that playing all their Champions Trophy games at one venue in Dubai has been to their advantage. Shami returned figures of 3-48 to set up India's four-wicket win over Australia in the semi-finals on Tuesday in Dubai. India coach Gautam Gambhir afterwards lashed out at critics who have said playing at the same Dubai International Cricket Stadium each time is unfair.

India refused to travel to Champions Trophy hosts Pakistan over political tensions and have won all four of their games at their temporary home.

They will face South Africa or New Zealand in Sunday's final, again in Dubai.

The other seven teams in the ODI competition have meanwhile had to shuttle between three Pakistani cities and the United Arab Emirates.

"It definitely helped us because we know the conditions and the behaviour of the pitch," Shami said Tuesday after his pivotal role in beating Australia.

"It is a plus point that you are playing all the matches at one venue."

As part of the hybrid arrangement of the tournament, South Africa were forced to travel to Dubai, only to return to Pakistan again less than 24 hours later without playing a game.

India are unbeaten in the 10 ODIs they have played in Dubai, winning nine.

'World class'

Shami, 34, claimed a five-wicket haul in India's opening win over Bangladesh and has bowled with pace and accuracy.

But a question on getting reverse swing with the old ball got Shami pleading with cricket authorities to allow the use of saliva to polish the ball in the 50-over format.

The International Cricket Council in 2022 made a ban on saliva -- brought in during the Covid pandemic -- permanent.

"We are trying to reverse, but you are not getting the use of saliva into the game," Shami told reporters. "We are constantly appealing to allow the use of saliva and it will be interesting with the reverse swing."

The use of saliva to shine one side of the old ball and keep the other rough helps fast bowlers get the leather ball to swing late and can be a lethal weapon in the final few overs of an ODI match.

They can still use sweat. After a strong start to the tournament, Shami left the field briefly in the win over Pakistan.

He has now put all fears of any fitness issues to rest with two matches in three days and bowling his full quota of 10 overs against Australia.

"I am trying to get my rhythm back and contribute more for the team," said Shami.

He added: "I am ready to bowl long spells."

Gambhir called Shami "a world-class performer".

"He's phenomenal and the hunger he brings on the table, the way he trains, the way he practises -- that's why you see all those results."

Virat Can't Keep Calm As Hardik's Late Cameo Guides India To CT 2025 Final

Virat Kohli slammed a sensational half-century while Hardik Pandya produced late fireworks as India defeat Australia by four wickets to reach the Champions Trophy 2025 final in Dubai on Tuesday. Chasing 265, Kohli was once again the top performer with 84 but it needed a cameo from Hardik to clinch the win for India. Hardik slammed 28 runs off 24 deliveries with the help of one four and three massive sixes. The match went down to the wire with India needing 27 runs to win from 24 balls but Hardik was able to help the cause massively with two sixes off Adam Zampa. The sixes sent the crowd into frenzy and the reaction of Virat in the Indian dressing room has gone viral on social media.

Batting first, Australia were bowled out for 264 in 49.3 overs and India chased it down with 11 balls to spare. Besides Kohli's 98-ball knock, Shreyas Iyer made 45 while KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya chipped in with 42 and 28 respectively in the first semifinal.

Earlier, captain Steve Smith and Alex Carey struck fifties to guide Australia past 260.

Smith top-scored with 73 off 96 balls as he stitched two crucial partnerships, first with Travis Head (39) for the second wicket, which yielded 50 runs, and then with Marnus Labuschagne (29) for the third for another 56 runs.

Carey made 61.

For India, Mohammed Shami (3/38) grabbed three wickets while Varun Chakravarthy and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets apiece.
