Talented pacer Harshit Rana, who has played two Tests, quite surprisingly made a surprise entry into the India playing XI in the fourth T20I against England in Pune on Friday. Though initially not named in the XI, Rana was called upon to replace allrounder Shivam Dube as a concussion substitute after the latter was struck on the helmet in the final over of India's innings. Dube, who scored 53, was hit on the helmet in the penultimate ball of the Indian innings by a Jamie Overton delivery.
Following the mandatory concussion test, Dube was cleared to play. However, he was run out on the final delivery of the innings.
Rana, who had recently played in the opening Test against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, came in to bowl in the 12th over and made an immediate impact, dismissing Liam Livingstone for 9. Rana finished with three wickets.
England skipper Jos Buttler appeared unhappy with the decision and was seen having a discussion with the umpires on the field. According to ICC's rules, teams are only allowed to name like-for-like replacements if a batsman is ruled out due to a concussion.
The decision to use Rana as a replacement of Dube did not go down well with many social media users, with some calling it cheating.
How Harshit Rana is a like to like replacement for Shivam Dube?
— Rajiv (@Rajiv1841) January 31, 2025
Is match refree dumb? Does he know anything about cricket?
This is proper cheating from BCCI. Shivam Dube is a part timer & is useless bowler in T20I who doesn't bowl in IPL as well for India much.
Shameful!!
Harshit Rana is like-for-like for Shivam Dube?
— cricketingview (@cricketingview) January 31, 2025
No wonder IND thought Reddy was a 4th fast bowler in AUS.
Rather than concussion sub the right word used should be Impact Sub. https://t.co/F2SO8gAV3f
— Prasanna (@prasannalara) January 31, 2025
It's outrageous to have Harshit Rana as a concussion sub for Shivam Dube (two completely different player types). India are literally playing with 12 players here.
— Alagappan Vijayakumar (@IndianMourinho) January 31, 2025
India had posted 181/9 after being sent in to bat. The hosts won the match by 15 runs to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. The final T20I will be played in Mumbai on Sunday.

International Cricket Council CEO Geoff Allardice has decided to step down just weeks before the Champions Trophy with a board member indicating that his failure to present a "clear picture" of host Pakistan's lack of preparedness is one of the multiple reasons behind the move. The 57-year-old joined the ICC in 2012 as General Manager of Cricket, coming from Cricket Australia, where he served as Cricket Operations Manager. He was appointed CEO of the ICC in November 2021, after having served as acting CEO for eight months.
"It has been a privilege to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the International Cricket Council and I am incredibly proud of the results we have achieved, from enhancing the global reach of cricket to the commercial foundation put in place for ICC Members," Allardice said in a statement.
"I believe this is the right time for me to step down and pursue new challenges," he added.
The official ICC statement made no mention of the exact reasons for Allardice's departure but a top source said the development has been building up for a while.
"The ICC T20 World Cup in the US was big a flop in terms of playing conditions and also it exceeded budget, the auditing is still being done," the board member told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
"What broke the camel's back was Champions Trophy where as CEO, he was supposed to give a clear picture about readiness of Pakistan to host a tourney of such magnitude," he added.
The Champions Trophy is due to start on February 19 with India playing its share of matches in Dubai owing to security concerns in Pakistan.
The bigger concern for ICC is, however, the fact that tournament venues in Karachi and Rawalpindi are still partially under construction or renovation and the images that have trickled in from there do not paint a very positive picture.
It remains to be seen whether Pakistan would be ready in time for the marquee event, which features the world's top eight teams and is being held for the first time after 2017.
However, ICC Chair Jay Shah praised Allardice for his contribution to the game.
"On behalf of the ICC Board, I want to sincerely thank Geoff for his leadership and commitment during his tenure as Chief Executive. His efforts have played a key role in advancing cricket globally.
"We are truly grateful for his service and wish him all the very best in his future endeavors," he said.
The ICC Board will now begin the process to identify Allardice's successor.
His departure continues the exodus of former chair Greg Barclay's team from the ICC.
Earlier, Chris Tetley (head of events), Alex Marshall (head of Anti-Corruption Unit) and Claire Furlong (head of marketing and media) had quit their positions on personal grounds.
The Khelo India Winter Games 2025 men's ice-hockey final on Monday will be a repeat of last year's gold medal-round match. On Sunday, Indian Army got the better of hosts UT-Ladakh 2-1 while ITBP defeated Himachal Pradesh 3-1 to set a mouth-watering title clash at the NDS Stadium complex.
The penultimate day of the first leg of the Khelo India Winter Games 2025 brought mixed results for hosts Ladakh even as Maharashtra went past Telangana and Karnataka on the medal tally. With a gold, a silver and a bronze from their skaters on Sunday, Maharashtra lead the standings with eight medals (2 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze).
Ladakh skaters started the day on a bright note at the NDS Stadium. In the 1000m short track for women, Skarma Tsultim (2:17.91 sec) and Padma Angmo (2:21.13 sec) did a Ladakh one-two leaving Madhya Pradesh's Udreka Singh (2:22.74 sec) third. Skarma's maiden KIWG gold was Ladakh's second this year.
With a total of four medals (2 gold and 2 silvers), Ladakh are joint second in the medal standings with Tamil Nadu, which won two golds - women's relay and men's 500m long track -- on Sunday.
Maharashtra skaters won a gold (men's relay), a silver (women's relay) and a bronze (men's 500 long track) on Sunday. Karnataka did not win any medal today but Tamil Nadu won both gold (Avikshit Vijay Viswanath) and silver (Selvakumar Muthukumar) at Gupuks Pond where the men's 500 long track race was held.
In the afternoon session, Indian Army became the first team to enter the final of the men's ice hockey competition. The defending champions warded off a stiff challenge from hosts Ladakh to win a thriller 2-1.
In another full house at the NDS Stadium, the Army vs Ladakh was such a fiercely contested encounter. Tempers often ran high as Ladakh enjoyed tremendous home support but the young Army men from the Ladakh Scouts Regimental centre backed their team to the hilt with trademark enthusiasm.
Much to the delight of the home fans, Ladakh opened the scoring in the 13th minute of the first period through Stanzin Lotus. The Army team, which suffered a 3-1 defeat against ITBP in a league match on Saturday, took time to settle down and faced several close calls.
The second period produced no goals but Ladakh let in two soft goals in less than a minute in the third and final period to allow Army take control of the match. Army played better as a team as the goals scored by Sherap Zangmo (32nd minute) and Tsewang Chorol (33rd minute) came off quick assists in the scoring zone.

India registered a thrilling two-wicket victory over England in the second T20I in Chennai on Saturday. With this win, India took a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Asked to bat first, England posted 165 for 9 in 20 overs with skipper Jos Buttler scoring 45. Later, the hosts kept on losing wickets but Tilak Varma's crucial knock of 72 not out helped India chase down the target with four balls to spare. With his the performance, Tilak surpassed broke a record of Virat Kohli in the format.
With this knock, Tilak completed his 318 runs after four consecutive T20I innings, without getting dismissed. In the past four innings for India, Tilak scored 107 and 120 against South Africa, 19 and 72 not out vs England.
He has now surpassed the record of Virat Kohli as the Indian batter with most runs in four consecutive T20I innings. Kohli had scored 258 runs in four innings in the format. Third position is held by wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson with 257 runs. Tilak is also the first-ever Indian batter to score over 300 runs in four consecutive T20I innings.
"Wicket was slightly two-paced. I was talking with Gautam sir yesterday, he said that, 'whatever happens, you should play according to the situation, you should be flexible.' Left-right will be a good option to bat out there, and it'll be slightly difficult for the bowlers as they should change their lines and lengths. (Gameplan against the short ball) We already played in South Africa, it was actually more difficult than this," said Tilak during the post-match presentation.
"We prepared but Archer and Wood are really quick. Everyone prepared well, we worked really hard in the nets and that gave us the results. I told him (Bishnoi) to hold the shape and look to hit in the gap. One flick against the fast bowler and one four against Livingstone, it was extraordinary. That made it easier to finish the game," he added.
The third T20I of the five-match series between India and England will be played on Tuesday in Rajkot.
The love affair between British rock band Coldplay and India pacer Jasprit Bumrah seems to be continuing. Coldplay, who are performing five concerts in India between January 18 and 26, have referred to Bumrah during their live shows. Lead singer Chris Martin even paid tribute to him during one of their shows in Navi Mumbai, calling him "No. 1 in the world", to which Bumrah also showed his gratitude on social media. Now, a Jasprit Bumrah Test jersey was seen on stage as Martin and the band performed in Bumrah's home city Ahmedabad. Notably, Bumrah was also present in the event.

In the first Coldplay concert at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, Chris Martin had joked that Jasprit Bumrah was present backstage, and had asked him to pause the concert so that he could bowl at Martin.
However, in the next show, Martin clarified that he had lied.
"Today, Bumrah sent us a serious message. He said, 'Listen, I did not give you permission to talk about me in your shows. I am the greatest bowler in the whole world.' So, with respect and love for Jasprit, number one in the world, we hope that we send love to him by showing you this clip of India destroying England," Martin had said during the second show.
Following that, a clip of Bumrah's iconic yorker to dismiss England batter Ollie Pope during England's Test tour of India in 2024 was played on the giant screen.
Bumrah had responded to the new fanfare, remarking on it on social media.
"This made me smile! Incredible vibe at the Coldplay concert in Mumbai (from what I've seen here) and even more special to be mentioned," Bumrah wrote on Instagram, reacting to the band's tribute to him.
Now, Coldplay keeping Bumrah's jersey with them on stage shows the mutual respect between the band and the pacer.
Riyan Parag has been declared fit to return for Assam in the seventh round of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, starting January 30. The 23-year-old will captain Assam in their final league match against Saurashtra in Rajkot. Parag's last competitive appearance was in the third T20I against Bangladesh in Hyderabad in October 2024. Since then, he has been sidelined by a shoulder injury that required surgery, which ruled him out of the T20I series in South Africa, the ongoing series against England, and India's Champions Trophy squad. However, his return to action could help him regain match fitness should India need him as a replacement in the near future.
Having played ten T20Is for India since his debut against Zimbabwe in July 2024, Parag is known for his explosive batting and handy quick-spin bowling. Before his injury, his all-round skills added valuable depth to India's lineup.
In the previous Ranji Trophy season, Parag showcased his prowess with the bat, amassing 378 runs in six innings at an impressive average of 75.60 and a strike rate of 113.85. He was also the leading six-hitter of the season, smashing 20 maximums.
Assam, currently at the bottom of the Elite Group D table with no wins in six matches (two losses and four draws), will hope Parag's return inspires a strong finish. While Assam is out of playoff contention, Saurashtra remains in the hunt for a knockout spot, making this clash crucial for the hosts.
Assam squad: Riyan Parag (capt), Denish Das (vice-capt), Mukhtar Hussain, Mrinmoy Dutta, Rahul Singh, Dipjyoti Saikia, Parvez Musaraf, Sumit Ghadigaonkar (wk), Rishav Das, Anurag Talukdar (wk), Avinav Choudhury, Sibsankar Roy, Akash Sengupta, Pradyun Saikia, Amlanjyoti Das.

Tilak Varma's fifty of rare brilliance helped India survive a top-order meltdown against England pacers and register a two-wicket win in the second T20I and take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series in Chennai on Saturday. Tilak (72 not out, 55b, 4x4, 5x6) cleverly used the extreme pace of English bowlers to amass runs, and singlehandedly took India past the target, as the hosts finished the night at 166 for eight. It was a mini classic because the left-hander hardly had constant support from the other end and the England bowlers were cock-a-hoop lot after making serious inroads.
Pacer Jofra Archer was his pet hunt of the night, slamming the Sussex man for a total of four sixes, the fourth one taking him past his fifty, as he leaked 60 runs in four overs for the wicket of Sanju Samson.
The left-hander's inside the line six off pacer Brydon Carse over deep fine leg (3/29) too was highly impressive.
But India had to walk through the panic room before Tilak's solidity carried them home.
The in-form Abhishek Sharma got India off the block in a blistering fashion, carting Archer for three boundaries in the very first over.
But a 148 kmph nip-backer by pacer Mark Wood pinged him on the back foot and even the DRS, which was taken more in hope than in any real conviction, could not save him.
The dismissal had India at a slightly shaky 15 for one which soon turned into a more concerning 19 for two along with the wicket of Samson.
The nerves were eased when skipper Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak added 39 quick runs for the third wicket to take their side to 58, but the former dragged Carse on to his stumps to give England an opening.
From 58 for three, the English pacers crashed through that creek to bag the wickets of Dhruv Jurel and Hardik Pandya to reduce India to 78 for five.
But Washington Sundar, who was dropped on 10 by Adil Rashid at mid-on off Wood, cashed in on that reprieve, hammering the Durham man for a six and two fours in succession to bring down the mounting asking rate.
However, Washington's attempt to run a 140 kmph thunderbolt from Carse to the third man saw the ball crashing onto his stumps.
India were 116 for six then. But they found a willing soldier in Tilak.
Earlier, Jos Buttler showed semblance of fight but other English batters didn't follow the skipper's suit while succumbing to Indian spinners.
Buttler (45, 30b, 2x4, 3x6) played some delectable shots, including a sequence of 4, 6, 4 off pacer Arshdeep Singh, who got rid of Phil Salt in the first over itself.
Salt pulled the left-arm pacer, who was earlier on the day named as the ICC Men's T20 Player of the Year, but could not find the distance to get caught by Washington, who replaced injured Nitish Kumar Reddy in the XI, near the square leg boundary.
Washington had a moment of success for himself when Ben Duckett's reverse sweep off him fell easily into the hands of Jurel, who came in for injured Rinku Singh.
However, the pull shot continued to haunt the English batters for the rest of the night as Buttler and later Liam Livingstone perished playing that shot.
India vice-captain Axar Patel (2/32) was the beneficiary of England batters' adventurous intentions.
The left-arm spinner bowled into the pitch and the inherent grip on the surface did not allow the batters to impart force and direction to their shots.
Buttler, whose aggression helped England to reach 58 for two in the Power Play overs, was caught by Tilak, while Livingstone ended in the hands of substitute Harshit Rana.
All-rounder Carse, who came in for Gus Atkinson, used the long handle to good effect, making 31 off 17 balls including three sixes but a moment of misunderstanding with Jofra Archer snapped his promising knock.
But the highlight of the England innings was the dismissal of Harry Brook, who began well, smashing a six off spinner Varun Chakravarthy (2/38).
But soon a back of the hand delivery breached Brook's defence to rattle his off-stump, as the English right-hander could not read it despite Chennai not having any smog.
A couple of beefy blows by lower-order batters helped England go past the 150-run mark but that was not enough.

FC Goa closed the gap with top-placed Mohun Bagan Super Giant after a flawless 2-0 win against Chennaiyin FC in their Indian Super League match on Saturday. The Gaurs are placed second in the table with 33 points after this win, cutting the gap with the top-positioned Mohun Bagan Super Giant (37) to four points. The loss also extended Chennaiyin FC's winless run to six games, having last tasted a victory in the ISL during their 1-0 win against Hyderabad FC on December 11.
FC Goa held total control over this game, keeping 58.6% of the possession and taking eight shots on target as opposed to none of Chennaiyin FC.
Iker Guarrotxena got FC Goa ahead in the game with his sharp awareness inside the six-yard box.
Following a corner, Boris Singh received the ball on the right flank. Boris curled in a cross that was mishandled by Chennaiyin FC goalkeeper Mohammed Nawaz.
Brison Fernandes lapped upon the chance but his shot ricocheted off the woodwork, and Guarrotxena picked up the loose ball and hammered it into the high centre of the goal in the 11th minute.
Nawaz partly redeemed himself six minutes later, as Aakash Sangwan burst into the box following a fast break by the Gaurs and shot firmly from a narrow angle on the left side.
Nawaz was forced to make an outstretched dive to get his hand at the end of the shot to save his side from conceding another strike. Sangwan did get the better of Nawaz in the 26th minute though, this time, from an even more difficult angle.
The gameplay seemed straight out of the training ground of the Gaurs, as Guarrotxena enabled them to build pressure on the Chennaiyin FC defence.
Abruptly, he broke that passage of play by making a backward pass to Carl McHugh. Unmarked, McHugh played a lobbed ball over the Chennaiyin FC backline for Sangwan, who took a deft touch before castling the ball into the bottom left corner by beating Nawaz on the near post.
FC Goa stepped up the intensity following their second goal, embracing a more proactive outlook in dabbling with multiple ways to test the Chennaiyin FC defence. Guarrotxena operated right down the middle and encountered a chance to triple the lead in the 31st minute.
In a pocket of space with no Chennaiyin FC players around him, he unleashed a thunderous shot directed on target that had to be saved by Nawaz in the top centre of the goal.
While the Gaurs orchestrated multiple incisive attacking moves, Chennaiyin FC struggled to create meaningful chances. FC Goa operated seamlessly in tandem from back to front, with the defence building up attacks and the midfield propelling them to sustain that for reasonable periods of time.
The Marina Machans, however, had a chance to pull a goal back in the 69th minute. Connor Shields, the leading assist maker (8) in the league, sprinted down the right flank before hurling in a cross for Wilmar Jordan Gil at the centre of the FC Goa box.
Wilmar got into a complicated position in his attempt to get the ball down. He instead squared it up for Farukh Choudhary beside him. With ample space to target the net, Farukh ended up striking his shot way too high of the goal. PTI AH AM AH AM AM

India will begin the new year with a T20I series against England at Eden Gardens, which will be their first series after the embarrassing defeat to Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy series Down Under. Before the series, India's head coach Gautam Gambhir visited the famous Kali Temple at Kalighat to pray for his team's success. Gambhir has always had a special connection with the city of Kolkata having captained and mentored the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their two Indian Premier League (IPL) titles in 2014 and 2024 respectively. The India head coach was seen taking blessings and praying at the holy temple on the eve of the first game.
The Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata is regarded as the holiest Shaktipeeth of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India, where the various parts of Devi Sati's body are said to have fallen, in the course of Shiva's Rudra Tandava. Kalighat represents the site where the toes of the right foot of Shakti or Sati fell.

The Suryakumar Yadav-led team will be bolstered with the return of pace veteran Mohammed Shami ahead of the all-important Champions Trophy, scheduled to start next month. Shami last played for India in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November 2023. He underwent surgery for a heel injury that ruled him out of the action till November last year when he turned up for his state side Bengal in the Ranji Trophy.
On the other hand, pacer Mark Wood will make his return to the team for the first time since August. He will join Jofra Archer and Jamie Overton in England's pace-attack as the visitors announced their playing XI for the series opener on Tuesday.
India and England have faced each other 24 times in T20Is, with India holding a slight advantage with 13 wins to England's 11. However, India have won five of the last seven T20I encounters between the two teams since 2021. Their last T20I clash occurred in the semifinals of the 2024 ICC Men's T20 Cricket World Cup, where India secured a memorable victory.
The series will begin in Kolkata and then move to Chennai, Rajkot, Pune, and Mumbai for the remaining matches. The final T20I will be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on February 2.
Following the T20I series, the two teams will compete in a three-match ODI series starting at Nagpur on February 6, which will give fans a peek into India's preparation for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

He did not win any Diamond League event in 2024, finishing second in Doha, Lausanne and Brussels. His only major win last year was at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland.

Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma returned to practice following his disastrous run of form during the Test series against Australia. Rohit started his practice with the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team and in a video going viral on social media, he was seen practicing with teammate Hardik Pandya in the Mumbai Indians nets. India are all set to play England in ODI and T20I series before travelling for the Champions Trophy 2025. While Hardik will travel to Kolkata for a 3-day training camp ahead of the T20I series, Rohit is expected to play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy.
In the video, Rohit was seen playing some confident shots while batting while Hardik had the ball in his hand and was bowling in the nets.
Meanwhile, racking the whip on the Indian cricket team's "star culture", the BCCI on Thursday unveiled a 10-point policy to promote "discipline and unity", making domestic cricket mandatory, imposing restriction on the presence of families and personal staff on tours and banning individual commercial endorsements during ongoing series.

It is learnt that the restrictions were sought by head coach Gautam Gambhir in a review meeting of the team's recent poor run.
Non-compliance would invite sanctions, including cuts in the players' retainer fee from central contracts and a bar on participating in the cash-rich Indian Premier League.
The measures have been announced in the wake of the team's disastrous tour of Australia during which it surrendered the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in a decade. The debacle was preceded by a series whitewash against a relatively under-strength New Zealand at home.
The 10 diktats make it mandatory for players to seek Gambhir and chairman of selectors' Ajit Agarkar's approval for any relaxation, including the duration of stay for their families on tour.
The Board has approved only a two-week window for families to stay with the players during overseas tours that exceed 45 days, besides imposing restrictions on personal staff, and commercial shoots.
By the look of things, the BCCI seems to have completely backed Gambhir's stance during the review meeting that took place last weekend.
Terming the measures as a way of "ensuring professional standards and operational efficiency during tours and series", the policy, which is in possession of PTI, could prove to be a landmark document.
The opening ceremony of the Champions Trophy will be held either on February 16 or 17 and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is confident that India captain Rohit Sharma will be in attendance at the event. The PCB source also said that it is awaiting communication from the ICC on the schedule of the customary captains' photo-shoot and the pre-event press conference. The eight-team tournament will get underway on February 19 in Karachi. However, India will play all their matches in Dubai, starting with the clash against Bangladesh on February 20, after refusing to travel to Pakistan owing to security concerns.
The source said PCB has procured all relevant clearances from its government to promptly issue visas to all captains, players and team officials who will come for pre-tournament events.
"This obviously includes Rohit or any other Indian team player or official or board official," he added.
Another source confirmed to PTI that the PCB has made it clear to the ICC that the opening ceremony, featuring all teams and their captains, will take place in Pakistan.
"This is in line with the usual protocols and since the opening match is on 19th the opening ceremony can be expected either on the 16th or 17th," the source added.
He said the schedule of the opening ceremony would depend on the warm-up matches list.
The source said that recently three Indian nationals, who were a part of the ICC delegation which came to Pakistan, were promptly issued visas once the world body sent their names to the PCB.

India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has made himself available for Delhi's next Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra beginning in Rajkot from January 23, DDCA secretary Ashok Sharma said on Tuesday. Pant last played a Ranji Trophy match back in the 2017-2018 season. However, there is no clarity over the participation of superstar Virat Kohli, who last featured in Ranji Trophy for Delhi back in 2012.
Both the India players have been named in Delhi's probables for the remainder of the season.
"Yes Pant has confirmed his availability for next Ranji game and will join the squad in Rajkot directly. About Virat Kohli we want him to play but we haven't heard from him while Harshit Rana is selected in the T20 squad and hence is unavailable," Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) secretary Ashok Sharma told PTI.
Former India players Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri are among many who want the current crop of players, especially the struggling Rohit Sharma and Kohli, to play red-ball cricket following the series loss in Australia.
Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal are also expected to play for their respective state teams. Rohit's training with the Mumbai team on Tuesday piqued plenty of interest but it remains to be seen if he would make himself available for the next round of Ranji Trophy matches beginning January 23.
There has also been intense debate around Kohli returning to Ranji Trophy to regain red ball form alongside Rohit.
DDCA naming its star players in the list of probables is the norm but their inclusion in the final squad is subject to their availability.
While Rohit had rested himself from the final Test in Australia due to poor form, Kohli's struggles outside the off-stump worsened as his tally of being caught in the slips swelled to eight over the course of five Tests.
Besides Kohli, Pant and Harshit Rana, Delhi have named 38 probables for the remaining two games. In Group D, Delhi are fourth in the standings with 14 points from five games.
BCCI vice-President Rajeev Shukla on Monday denied any rift between India head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma, while also offering support to the senior batter who is currently navigating a major slump in form. India were mauled 1-3 by Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with Rohit managing a mere 31 runs during the series, which prompted him to drop himself from the line-up in the fifth and final Test in Sydney.
Amid his poor run, there was also speculation that he had developed serious differences with Gambhir and that there was dissension in the dressing room due to the poor performance of him and other senior batters, including Virat Kohli.
"It's completely wrong statement, there is no rift between chairman of selection (Ajit Agarkar) and coach, there is no rift between captain and coach. This is all rubbish which is being spread in a section of media," Shukla said in a sharp retort to questions on the team's dynamics in the aftermath of the loss.
It was widely speculated that Gambhir has issued an ultimatum to the seniors to either perform or be prepared to be sidelined.
"This is also wrong that Rohit has insisted on captaincy. He is the captain. Form or lack of form is part and parcel of the game. These are phases, nothing new. When he saw he is out of form, he dropped himself from the fifth Test," the veteran administrator asserted.
Shukla also said that the recent review meeting to assess the team's performance has thrashed out the way forward.
"Review meeting is complete. We have discussed the way forward and how to do well," he said.
Shukla reiterated that the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy will be known by Sunday. The selectors have held back the announcement to wait on the fitness status of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who injured his back during the Australia tour.
"Squad for Champions Trophy will be known after a meeting on January 18 or 19," he said. P

Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen opened up about the heartbreak of missing out on a maiden Olympic medal after coming so close, admitting that 2024 was a bit tough for him but the "fire inside him is still burning" to bounce back stronger in this new Olympic cycle. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Laskhya made history by becoming the first Indian to make the men's singles semifinals at the Summer Games. En route, he upset some big-name opponents, including Jonatan Christie in the group stage and compatriot H.S. Prannoy in the Round of 16.
However, defending champion Viktor Axelsen, who went on to win the gold, stopped Lakshya's march in Paris in the semifinal. The Almora lad failed to become the first Indian badminton player to win an Olympic medal in men's singles after going down to Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia in the bronze medal match.
"Last year was a bit tough for me. Coming this close to a medal and missing out. But, for me, the fire inside of me is still burning, and I want to come back somewhere from that and do well this year and leading up to the next Olympics," Lakshya said in the India Open pre-tournament press conference on Monday.
Lakshay won the India Open, a BWF Super 750 tournament in 2022 when it was held behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the 23-year-old Indian vowed to win it this time in front of the amazing Indian fans when the tournament starts on Tuesday.
"When I won the India Open in 2022, it was not in front of the fans. So I hope I win it again in front of the amazing fans here in India. It's a great opportunity for the Indian fans to come and watch us live. Watch all the big stars," he added.
In the season-opening tournament, the Malaysia Open, Lakshya crashed out in the first round after losing to lower-ranked Chi Yu-jen of Chinese Taipei in straight games.

Former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury said Monday he had retired from boxing just weeks after suffering a second straight defeat at the hands of Oleksandr Usyk. "I'm going to make this short and sweet," the British fighter said in a social media post. "I'd like to announce my retirement from boxing." "It's been a blast, I've loved every single minute of it," added Fury, who has, however, previously quit only to return to the ring. The "Gypsy King", 36, last fought on December 21 when he lost his rematch against WBA, WBC and WBO champion Usyk in Riyadh.
Asked after the fight whether the public would see him fight again, Fury said: "You might do, you might not do. Who knows?"
Fury enjoyed two stints as heavyweight champion and retires with a record of 34 wins, two defeats and one draw.
He announced he was quitting after beating Dillian Whyte in April 2022 but returned to action later that year.
Frank Warren, who promotes Fury, told the BBC he had not spoken to the boxer prior to his retirement announcement.
"I've said all along that there is no way I will be trying in any way to influence him," Warren said.
"If that what he wants to do, that's great. He's done everything he can do. Probably been the best British heavyweight of his generation by far.
"Two-time world champion, two closely fought fights against Usyk. He's got plenty of money, got his wits about him, got a lovely family. God bless him, enjoy."
All three judges scored last month's fight in Saudi Arabia 116-112 in Usyk's favour.
The Ukrainian won their first fight in May 2024 by split decision.
Fury's retirement appears to mean he will not take on another former world champion, Anthony Joshua, in a long-anticipated all-British showdown.
Joshua said Saturday that a fight with Fury "has to happen this year".
And Joshua's promoter, Matchroom's Eddie Hearn, said he doubted it was the end of the road for Fury.
"If you haven't got a heart for it anymore and you don't want to compete anymore, I think retirement is the best option," Hearn said.
"Disappointing obviously for British fight fans because we've got the chance to make the biggest fight in boxing but if that is the last we see of him, he's had a great career. I doubt it (is the last time we will see him box)."
Fury became world champion for the first time when he shocked Ukraine's Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015, becoming WBA, IBF and WBO champion.
He was then out of the ring for more than two-and-a-half years, during which he tackled mental health issues.
Fury returned to action in 2018 and became a two-time champion by beating Deontay Wilder to claim the WBC belt in 2020 in the second of a trilogy of fights against the American.
He overcame a big scare against converted MMA fighter Francis Ngannou in 2023, before losing twice to Usyk last year.

An inquest into the 2018 helicopter crash that killed the owner of Leicester City Football Club opened on Monday. Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and four others were killed when the Thai billionaire's personal helicopter crashed shortly after taking off from the Premier League club's King Power Stadium following a match in October 2018. Catherine Mason, the coroner presiding over the hearing, told the jury that under English law the role of an inquest is simply to determine the facts over how someone died rather than make rulings on individual guilt or innocence.
"An inquest hears evidence so the jury can make findings of fact and come to a conclusion about the deaths," said Mason, sitting at Leicester City Hall. "Nobody is on trial here.
"An inquest does not decide matters of criminal or civil liability," added Mason, who also said the hearing was expected to last for between two and three weeks.
In a tribute read to the court by the lawyer for the family of Srivaddhanaprabha, he was described as "a good man with a good heart".
The family statement also paid tribute to his role in reviving Leicester's fortunes and bankrolling their shock Premier League title triumph in 2016 after the Midlands club were 5,000/1 rank outsiders to be crowned champions of England at the start of that season.
"Khun Vichai had a vision to the put the club in the Premier League. He wanted to build the club up, not just run it.
"With his support and commitment the team won the Premier League in 2016 -- in only their second year in the division.
"We miss him every day. The pain his death caused and continues to cause our family is immeasurable."
In a separate development, the family announced last week they had launched a 2.15 billion pound ($2.63 billion) legal action against the manufacturers of the helicopter, in what is reported to be the largest fatal accident claim in English history.

Naomi Osaka said on Monday she was struggling to keep focused at the Australian Open with the deadly and massive wildfires that have ravaged Los Angeles "three blocks" from her house. The two-time Melbourne champion defeated France's Caroline Garcia 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round and afterwards said: "I was watching the fire map and the fire is three blocks from my house. I had someone go get my daughter's birth certificate." The 27-year-old former world number one, who has a young daughter named Shai, represents Japan but lives in Los Angeles.
After setting up a second-round meeting at Melbourne Park with Czech 20th seed Karolina Muchova, Osaka said "honestly I don't think I've been doing the greatest keeping focus".
"It is really difficult for me because, I don't know, I think it's tougher now because I find now my home is more of a home because I have memories with my daughter.
"There's so many things, keepsakes and stuff like that. Obviously you can't hoard them all when you're asking them to go to your house and just grab stuff. So it is really tough in that sense."
At least 24 people have been killed in the blazes that have ripped through the United States' second-largest city for the past week.
Whole communities have been scorched to rubble and thousands left without homes.
Osaka said everyone in her family was safe but she is "checking the wildfire map any chance that I get just to see what's happening".
"I also feel like in a way it's tough because I don't think I'll go back to L.A immediately after. I don't feel like it's safe enough to go back there," she said.
"It's kind of a little bit in a limbo, but also motivating me to hopefully stay here as long as I can."

Fourteen-year-old Mumbai opener Ira Jadhav became the first Indian to score a triple hundred in Under-19 cricket, when she made a 346 against Meghalaya in the U19 Women's One Day Trophy in Alur, Bengaluru on Sunday. Ira, a student of the Sharadashram Vidyamandir, the alma mater of Sachin Tendulkar, Vinod Kambli and Ajit Agarkar made her runs in 157 balls with 42 fours and 16 sixes. This is also the highest score in Youth List A matches by an Indian but the world record in the segment stands in the name of Lizelle Lee of South Africa, who made 427 in 2010 in a domestic match.
Jadhav, who went unsold in the previous Women's Premier League auction, however has been named among the standbys for India's U19 T20 World Cup squad for the tournament to be held in Malaysia.
An admirer of India batter Jemimah Rodrigues, Jahdhav's triple hundred and her 274-run stand for the second wicket with skipper Hurley Gala (116, 79 balls) powered Mumbai to a mammoth 563 for three.
Meghalaya were bowled out for a mere 19, an inning that contained six ducks, as Mumbai recorded a massive 544-run victory.

The return of Mohammed Shami was the biggest news that came out of the BCCI selection meeting for the India vs England five-T20I series that starts on January 22. Also, Jasprit Bumrah, who led India in the Perth and Sydney Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, has been rested for the forthcoming series against the Three Lions. But there were some other surprises too.
Suryakumar Yadav will lead the Men in Blue in the five-match series, while, spinner Axar Patel will be the deputy of the 34-year-old. Hardik Pandya is in the squad but he has been ignored.
Youngsters Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Dhruv Jurel have retained their place in the 20-over squad. Seamer Harshit Rana who was in the T20I squad against South Africa but couldn't make it into the playing eleven has also been named in the 15-member lineup for the upcoming series.
One of the main talking points will be Shami's inclusion in the Men in Blue squad. The 34-year-old seamer will be donning the blue jersey after 2023.
Last year, Shami returned to domestic cricket with Bengal after undergoing ankle surgery that kept him sidelined for nearly a year. Shami had also been a part of Bengal's squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Shami had made an impressive comeback to competitive cricket, having last featured in the ODI World Cup 2023 final. Following ankle surgery and overcoming a series of setbacks, he returned to action for Bengal in a Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh in November.
Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana and Mohammed Shami will be leading the Indian seam armoury.
While, Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, and Washington Sundar will be in charge of the spin attack.
The five-match T20I series will kick off on January 22 in Kolkata. The second and third matches will be held on January 25 and 28 in Chennai and Rajkot, respectively. The fourth game of the series will be played on January 31 in Pune. Mumbai will host the final match of the T20I series on February 2.
India's squad for the T20I series against England: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Sanju Samson (WK), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel (VC), Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammad Shami, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar, Dhruv Jurel (WK).

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has revealed Ben Chilwell is set to end his troubled spell at Stamford Bridge as the England defender looks for a move in the January transfer window. Maresca confirmed on Friday that injury-plagued Chilwell will be allowed to move on if the right deal is found in January. Chilwell will not feature in Chelsea's FA Cup third round tie against Morecambe on Saturday because Maresca does not want to jeopardise the left-back's chances of finding a new club. The 28-year-old, who has played just 45 minutes this campaign, is being linked with a switch across London to West Ham, who hired former Chelsea manager Graham Potter this week.
Chilwell has made over 100 Chelsea appearances since joining from Leicester in 2020, winning the Champions League in his first season with the Blues.
But he has been in exile since Maresca took charge in the close-season, with Marc Cucurella preferred at left-back.
Cesare Casadei and Carney Chukwuemeka are also in line to leave and will not play against League Two side Morecambe.
"Chilwell is thinking he's going to leave, it's better to avoid using him to avoid injury," Maresca told reporters.
"Cesare will not be in the squad, same situation as Chilwell. It's best in this moment not to allow him to play in case there's opportunity for him to leave."
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has made just five substitute appearances in the league since following Maresca from Leicester last year.
But Maresca insisted the midfielder still has a future at Stamford Bridge.
The Italian would not be drawn on reports that Chelsea could raid Crystal Palace's defence to patch up his injury-hit rearguard.
Chelsea academy graduate Marc Guehi, who starred for England at Euro 2024, is reportedly target, while there is also the option to recall Trevoh Chalobah from his season-long loan at Selhurst Park.
Maresca is currently without Wesley Fofana, whose hamstring injury could cost him the rest of the season, with Benoit Badiashile out until February.
"Guehi is a Palace player. I like him, for sure, but he's not our player," Maresca said.
"I like the central defenders we have, I like different defenders in Italy and France but it does not mean we're going to buy them. When you have an injury the speculation is there.
"Trev is a good player but a Palace player."

World number one Jannik Sinner will have his hearing into allegations of doping at the Court of Arbitration for Sport on April 16-17, the Lausanne-based body said on Friday. The World Anti-Doping Agency appealed after the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) cleared Sinner after he tested positive twice for the banned steroid clostebol in March last year. "No parties requested a public hearing and it will be conducted behind closed doors," CAS said in a statement. The ITIA accepted defending Australian Open champion Sinner's explanation that the drug entered his system when his physio used a spray containing it to treat a cut, then provided massage and sports therapy to the player.
Asked on the eve of the Australian Open if he knew when a verdict was due, the 23-year-old said: "I know exactly as much as you guys know.
"We are in a stage where we don't know many, many things."
Sinner, who faces a stern first-round test at Melbourne Park against big-hitting Chilean Nicolas Jarry, admitted the scandal continued to play on his mind.
"You think about this, of course," he said. "I would lie if I would tell you I forget.
"It's something what I have with me now already for quite a long time. But it is what it is. I'm here trying to prepare the Grand Slam. Let's see how it goes."
Sinner said he had always been "very, very careful on every single medicine I take, even what I eat".
"When the bottle is open, I throw it away, I take a new one," he said.
"In my mind I know exactly what happened, and that's how I block it (out).
"I haven't done anything wrong, that's why I'm still here. That's why I'm still playing."
ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi has insisted Sinner's case was "run by the book".
"I genuinely believe there has been a lot of misinformation out there, which is unfortunate," Gaudenzi told the Australian Associated Press in a recent interview.
"I am 100 percent sure that there has not been any preferential treatment. The process has been run by the book and according to the rules, by the ITIA."
Former world number one Novak Djokovic said he believed Sinner when he said he tested positive due to contamination, but the 24-time Grand Slam winner asserted that players had been "kept in the dark" throughout the process.
"I've been really frustrated, as have most of the other players, that we've been kept in the dark for five months," Djokovic said.
"He (Sinner) received the news (of the positive tests) in April and the announcement was not until August, just before the US Open.
"The ATP has not really talked in depth about why they kept that case away from the public."

The first game of SA20 2025 was played between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and MI Cape Town on Friday in Gqeberha. In the opening match, Cape Town emerged victorious by 97 runs as they posted 174/7 while batting first and then bundled out the Sunrisers for 77. During the match, MI batter Dewald Brevis, who scored 57 off 29 balls, hammered a huge six which brought back the memories of a gigantic six from India batter Rinku Singh in 2023. The Indian had hit a big maximum off Aiden Markram during a T20I match against South Africa in December 2023, which ended up damaging sightscreen of the press box.
Interestingly, after 394 days on the incident, the sightscreen which was broken by Rinku's six, is still not repaired due to the budget constraints. The press box at the St George's Park in Gqeberha is placed at a high altitude and it is also one of the reasons for the delay in the repair work.
After the opening match of SA20 2025, Terrance, who is one of the officials of the St George's Park and looks after the maintenance work, spoke to Hindustan Times and shared some details.
"Firstly, look at the height. It's too much and not that easily possible to get fixed because it would require a crane and all sorts of heavy machinery. You can't bring all that stuff into the field when you have games like these. We've had windows broken here at the bottom from time to time. That we fix in a jiffy. So there is always a priority set. And with the budget shortage, we have to work with what we've got," said Terrance.
"We had the roof fixed. If you see that roof, we've got it covered. That is a new roof. I can show you projects that have been successfully completed," he added.
Terrance further stated that during a storm in August 2024, the condition of the stadium deteriorated and a lot of money was spent on the repair work.
"We suffered storms in August, so the entire roof of a stand blew away. And then we made a claim to the insurer, who said it's wear-and-tear. We can't really pay for that. And we had to pay around 400,000R. It was quite a big portion," he said.
"Other parts had corrosion, and so on; those needed repairing and some replacements. It cost a lot of money. So, in that context, I am saying it's not really a priority. Because it doesn't pose a danger to anybody. Then again, it doesn't mean that it's not on our list to get it fixed," he added.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said it will be difficult to find January signings that will be capable of immediately improving his side as they aim to end a five-year trophy drought. A lack of firepower was exposed in the past week as Arteta's men lost 2-0 to Newcastle in the League Cup semi-final first leg and drew 1-1 at Brighton in a blow to their Premier League title hopes. Adding to Arteta's attacking problems, Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka is set to be sidelined until at least March after surgery on a hamstring injury. The Gunners lie six points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand, although they are well-placed to progress to the Champions League knockout stages.
On Friday, Arteta shot down suggestions he has to add more forward options to his squad over the next month.
"Bringing in bodies doesn't help us all," said Arteta ahead of Sunday's FA Cup third round tie against Manchester United.
"It's just about somebody who can immediately impact our performance and can bring something that we don't have. To find that in this market is very difficult to achieve.
"The circumstances (can) change because we have certain injuries for some big players, so it's always a possibility but always it's about somebody that is really going to make us much better."
Arteta's comments after the defeat to Newcastle that the ball used in the League Cup was "tricky" and "flies different" to those used in the Premier League have been widely mocked.
However, the Spaniard said his explanation for Arsenal's missed chances against the Magpies was never meant as an excuse.
"It's not an excuse, it's a reality," added Arteta. "Every pitch is different, the weather conditions are changing in football, that's the beauty of it.
"That's it, we adapt to that, and I never use it as an excuse."

Yuzvendra Chahal has broken his long silence after rumours on social media claimed that all was not well in his marriage with Dhanashree Verma. Earlier on Wednesday, Dhanashree broke her silence amid viral rumours of her divorce. Chahal got engaged to Dhanashree, a YouTuber, dance choreographer and dentist, who has participated in the reality show Jhalak Dheekha Ja, on August 8, 2020. The couple got married in a private ceremony on December 22, 2020 in Gurgaon.
In a long message regarding "social media posts speculating on matters that may or may not be true", Chahal said it has caused him and his family immense pain.
"I am grateful to all my fans for their unwavering love and support without which, I wouldn't have come this far. But this journey is far from OVER!!! As there are still many incredible OVERS left to deliver for my country, my team, and for my fans!!! While I am proud to be a sportsman, I am also a Son, a Brother, and a Friend. I understand the curiosity surrounding recent events, particularly about my personal life. However, I have noticed certain social media posts speculating on matters that may or may not be true," he wrote in a long post on his Instagram story.
"As a Son, a Brother and a Friend, I humbly request everyone not to indulge in these speculations, as they have caused immense pain to me and my family. My family values have taught me to always wish well for all, strive to achieve success through dedication and hard work, instead of taking shortcuts, and I remain committed to these values. With Divine Blessings, I shall forever strive to seek your love & support and not sympathy.
Earlier, Dhanashree slammed faceless trolls for spreading hate.
"The past few days have been incredibly tough for my family and me. What's truly upsetting is the baseless writing, devoid of fact checking, and the character assassination of my reputation by faceless trolls spreading hate," Dhanashree wrote in a long post on her Instagram story.
"I've worked hard for years to build my name and integrity. My silence is not a sign of weakness; but of strength. While negativity spreads easily online, it takes courage and compassion to uplift others.
"I choose to focus on my truth and move forward, holding onto my values. The truth stands tall without the need for justification."
World number one Jannik Sinner said Tuesday his "amazing" 2024 was history as he warmed up for the defence of his Australian Open title with a tough exhibition match victory on Melbourne's centre court. The Italian is coming off a breakthrough year in which he backed up his maiden Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park by winning the US Open and ATP Finals. He then starred for Italy as they claimed a second consecutive Davis Cup triumph, ending as the world's undisputed top player.
The 23-year-old skipped any lead-up events to the opening major of the year and instead flew straight to Melbourne for his first match of 2025.
He faced a testing battle on a hot afternoon against Australian world number 25 Alexei Popyrin, eventually prevailing 6-4, 7-6 (7/2), rallying from 5-2 down in the second set on Rod Laver Arena.
"2024 was an amazing season for me, but it has already gone now," said Sinner, who spent Christmas at home in the snow and arrived in Melbourne to a 40 degree Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) day.
"So many things have happened for me on this court and off the court," he added.
"I'm very happy to be back, even if it is a kind of exhibition. For us it's always very important trying to feel the court, the pace.
"In my mind, I know how much work we have put in, which hopefully will give me confidence and we will see how it goes," he added.
The Australian Open starts on Sunday.
Sinner is kicking off his campaign with a doping cloud hanging over him after twice testing positive for traces of the steroid clostebol in March.
He was exonerated by the International Tennis Integrity Agency, which accepted his explanation that the drug entered his system when his physiotherapist treated a cut.
But the World Anti-Doping Agency appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and the Italian is still awaiting the verdict.

Has the world seen the last of Virat Kohli in Test cricket, or will he be able to revive his career and enjoy a second wind? The flag-bearer of Indian batting since the retirement of Sachin Tendulkar, Kohli yelled at himself and punched his thigh, as he got out for the eighth time edging to the slip cordon or keeper in his nine visits to the crease in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The 36-year-old's career was hanging by a thread after he once again fell victim to a back-of-length delivery on a sixth-stump line on the second day of the fifth and final Test against Australia, the bowler being the self-effacing but relentless Scott Boland.
His problems seem unsolvable at the moment as it is more mental than technical.
The sameness in the mode of his dismissals mean it has become his second nature to "fish" at deliveries on the corridor of uncertainty.
Kohli batted in nine innings across five Tests and barring the second innings century at Perth in the opening Test, and a 36 in the first innings in Melbourne, he has failed to get going.
Remove the 136 runs he had aggregated over his two innings in Perth and Melbourne, and Kohli is left with just 54 runs across his seven other completed knocks.
For a champion player, it is very difficult to take a decision when he is going through his career's all-time lowest phase.
It is understood that Kohli is in no mood to retire and wants to play for India till the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has been constantly saying that the right-hander would continue.
But an ex-national selector looked at the situation differently. He asked how Kohli plans to convince the selectors for the England tour in June without playing any tangible red-ball cricket.
"It would be very hard for selectors to pick either Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli on the basis of IPL performance or form. Their has to be some red-ball cricket for them in lead-up to England tour. Else you can't justify their selections," the former selectors told PTI.
If sources are to be believed there is no indication as of now that Kohli intends to play the Ranji Trophy, which restarts from January 23.
Delhi will play Saurashtra from January 23-26 in an away game in Rajkot when the Ranji Trophy resumes.
In the next round of matches from January 30 to February 2, Kohli's state team Delhi is scheduled to play Railways.
However, playing domestic red-ball cricket in India in January and February for Test matches in England in June practically won't make sense.
Kohli lives in his new home in London for better part and only joins the national team or IPL side before the start of a series or tournament.
India's next assignment is a three-match ODI series against England from February 6 followed by the Champions Trophy (from February 19 to March 9) and then the IPL starts on March 14.
Clearly there is no window to play any red-ball tournament for preparation unless he skips the IPL for a county stint to gear up for the England tour.
Kohli is one of the biggest brands of the IPL and he won't be losing a chance to captain RCB once again this year and fulfil his dream of winning at least one IPL trophy before drawing the curtains on his glorious career.
The only other option left is talking to selectors and playing at least couple of India A games during its shadow tour to England just before the senior team's tour begins with the first Test at Leeds from June 18.
As of now, Kohli has played his last Test at SCG. But when the name is as big as Virat Kohli, there could always be a twist in the tale.

19-year-old Australia opener Sam Konstas has quickly become the talk of the town. Just two Test matches into his career, Konstas' aggressive approach has seen him have both verbal and cricketing clashes with several India players. While Konstas and Virat Kohli clashed shoulders in the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Melbourne, he had a war of words with India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in the fifth Test in Sydney. Legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar has now drawn an interesting comparison, finding a parallel between Konstas and a young Virat Kohli.
On Day 1 of the fifth Test, Konstas and Bumrah exchanged words after Usman Khawaja took a long time to fix his stance, keeping the bowler waiting.
Konstas' approach has led to him facing occasional sledging from the Indian cricketers, and his style has reminded Gavaskar about Kohli in his youth.
"It's not about the batting; it's about what happens on the field when someone's behaviour stirs things up. It reminds me of a young Kohli who is upfront and provocative, drawing reactions from the opposition," said Gavaskar on the situation, speaking to India Today.
Konstas set the tone right from his first innings on Test debut. The 19-year-old took on Jasprit Bumrah, smashing him for first two sixes in Tests in nearly four years. One of them was a reverse scoop, no less.
"Konstas has suddenly become a figure who gets under the skin of the opposition. He did it in the first innings when no one expected it, and in the second innings, Bumrah had the perfect reply by getting him out," Gavaskar added.
However, Gavaskar warned that Konstas should not get carried away by this reputation, which would in turn make him an easy target for opponents.
"I think Konstas might be getting a bit carried away with this new persona. Even Shane Watson, who knows him well, has remarked that this behavior is surprising, as Konstas is usually a quiet and reserved person. It seems like his teammates may have encouraged this aggressive approach, but it's something he'll need to manage as his reputation grows. Whether in the short term or long term, if Konstas continues to be seen as a stirrer, he'll be the one the opposition targets," Gavaskar said.
Konstas has managed scores of 60, 8 and 23 so far in three innings against India.
Pakistan were reeling in response to a relentless South African batting performance on the second day of the second Test against Pakistan at Newlands on Saturday. Pakistan were 64-3 at the close after double centurion Ryan Rickelton led South Africa to a first innings total of 615. Kagiso Rabada struck twice and Marco Jansen once when Pakistan started their innings. The tourists were effectively four down because opening batsman Saim Ayub was ruled out of the match with a broken right ankle.
Babar Azam, forced to open the batting in Ayub's absence, was 31 not out at the close with his side still 551 runs behind.
Left-handed opening batsman Rickelton made a chanceless 259, South Africa's joint seventh highest Test score, before he was seventh man out with the total on 557.
South African captain Temba Bavuma opted to keep Pakistan in the field until the last man, 18-year-old debutant Kwena Maphaka, was out 40 minutes after tea.
By then, South Africa had added 299 runs to their overnight 316-4, scoring at almost five runs an over.
Resuming on 176, Rickelton was content to play the anchor role while Kyle Verreynne hit 100 off 147 balls in a sixth-wicket partnership of 148 off 222 deliveries.
Verreynne holed out to deep midwicket after an innings which included five sixes as well as nine fours, but Rickelton continued to bat flawlessly while Jansen thrashed a 42-ball half-century.
A rapid seventh-wicket stand of 86 was ended when Rickelton was caught at mid-on going for a big hit after batting for 607 minutes. He faced 343 balls and hit 29 fours and three sixes.
Jansen was out for 62 off 54 balls, but Keshav Maharaj hit 40 off 35 deliveries as the bowlers continued to take a pounding.
South Africa's innings ended when Maphaka was bowled second ball for nought to become the 100th Test wicket for Mohammad Abbas.
At 18 years 270 days, Maphaka became South Africa's youngest Test player when the match started on Friday.
Abbas took three for 94, while wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan held six catches in the South African innings.
Pakistan captain Shan Masood was caught at first slip off Rabada for two in the first over of his team's reply.
Kamran Ghulam was bowled by Jansen for 12 and Saud Shakeel was out for nought, providing a second catch for David Bedingham at first slip off Rabada.
Pakistan were floundering at 20-3, before Babar and Rizwan put on an unbeaten 44 for the fourth wicket as the day's play ended.
