Archery At Paris Paralympics 2024: Sheetal Devi, Sarita Kumari Crash Out

India suffered heartbreak from the archery arena as Sarita Kumari's splendid run ended in quarterfinals, while armless wonder Sheetal Devi crashed out of the last-16 in the compound women's open category at the Paralympics in Paris Paralympics 2024 on Saturday. Faridabad's Sarita, who qualified as ninth seed, had a dominating outings in the first and second rounds before top-seed Oznur Cure Girdi of Korea halted her dream run in the last eight. Oznur, who smashed the world record to top the qualifying round with a score of 704 out of a maximum 720 points, shot three perfect 10s in the second end to take a healthy five-point lead.

Sarita took the third end and matched Oznur's 30 with a perfect fourth end, but the Turkey archer remained four points in the lead, riding on her strong starts and wrapped it up with a 29 in the fifth end.

Sheetal, who draws the arrow with her toes, endured a blip in the second end where she shot the 7-point red ring to go down to Tokyo silver medalist Mariana Zuniga of Chile 137-138 in the pre-quarters.

All eyes were on Asian Para Games double gold medalist Sheetal, who also had bettered the previous world record of 698 shooting 703, to get a bye into the last-16 round.

Sheetal started out on a positive note as she hit two X dropped one point to take the opening set 29-28.

But her 7-point in the second arrow gave the Chilean seasoned archer the much-needed opening as she won the second end 27-26 to make it level (55-all).

It was a neck-and-neck affair for the duo in the next eight arrows, before Mariana edged out Sheetal in the final arrow by shooting a 9 as the Paralympics debutant Sheetal slipped to the 8-ring to lose by one-point.

On a day second seed Sheetal suffered an early elimination, ninth seed Sarita put up a dominated from the start to down Italy's Eleonora Sarti 141-135 in a one-sided affair in her pre-quarters.

The ninth seeded Sarita, who won a team silver medal at the Asian Para Games last year, dropped just one point to take a four-point lead in the first end.

There was no looking back as she stretched the lead to five points in the second end where she shot one X (closer to the centre).

Her higher-ranked Italian rival pulled off two 10s and took the third end, but Sarita remained in control and sealed the issue with two solid ends.

Sarita earlier knocked out Nur Jannaton Abdul Jalil of Malaysia 138-124 in her first round clash.

In the open class, archers shoot from a sitting position at a distance of 50m at an 80cm five-ring target made up of the 10-6 point bands.

"Used To Cry...": Paralympics Bronze Medallist Mona On 'Biggest Challenge'

A mother of two, Mona Agarwal used to cry every single day at the shooting range when her kids on video calls would innocently claim that she had forgotten her way back home and she must put the address on GPS and return. On Friday, participating in her maiden Paralympics, the 37-year-old Mona clinched the bronze medal in women's 10m air rifle after gunning for the gold medal in the final, which eventually went to India's Avani Lekhara.

Having gone through the struggles of being away from her children and even facing financial problems, Mona eventually achieved her dream of winning a medal in a competition that she, by her own admission, did not know existed.

"When I came for my practice I left my kids behind at home. I was heartbroken," Mona told the media.

"Everyday I would make video calls to them and they would tell me, 'mumma aap raasta bhool gaye ho, GPS pe laga ke wapas aa jao!' (mumma, you have forgotten the way back home. Please put it on the GPS and come back!)."

"I used to cry every evening when I would speak with my kids... I then started calling them once a week," she said.

Mona also recalled facing financial difficulties among other hurdles.

"That was my toughest part, the financial crisis was another. I did feel the financial load which I took to get here. But at the end, I am through all the struggles and hurdles and have been able to achieve a medal, and I am feeling great," she said.

"This is my first Paralympics, I just started shooting two-and-a-half years back and within this period I reached this platform and performed my best and achieved my (goal of winning a) medal," Mona added.

Mona, who is polio-stricken, said while she had left home in 2010 to make a career in sports, till 2016 she did not know there was a scope for her in competitions like the Paralympics.

"Before 2016, I was not even aware that we could participate in any of the games. When I realised that I can, I tried understanding which game I can participate in with my disability and in which game I can perform my best with my situation. After (trying out) 3-4 games, I chose shooting," she said.

When asked about how her family, neighbours and relatives would be feeling today, Mona said, "They are all very excited because in 2010 I left my home just to fulfil my dreams, there were objections like 'we will not accept your game' or 'we will not let you in'." "There were so many restrictions, but today, they are all with me and feeling proud," she said. PTI DDV DDV AH AH

"Want To Be Kohli Of Indian Badminton": Lakshya Sen's Monumental Remark

Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen impressed everyone with his performance at the Paris Olympics 2024 but he failed to secure the bronze medal by the smallest of margins. Lakshya became the first Indian male player to reach the badminton semi-finals at the Olympics but his dream of reaching the gold medal match was ended after a loss against top seed Viktor Axelsen. Lakshya faced Lee Zii Jia in the bronze medal match but he once again was defeated. Although he did not manage to add an Olympic medal to his name, his performance earned him a lot of praise and during a recent interaction, the youngster revealed his dream of becoming the "Virat Kohli of Indian badminton in coming years".

“Why not I mean, but again he's done a lot for Indian cricket. Yes I want to be the Virat Kohli of Indian badminton in coming years,” he said on the The Ranveer Show podcast.

Lakshya also opened up about his camaraderie with Tokyo and Paris gold medallist Viktor Axelsen. He said that he was inspired by Axelsen and they also trained together in Dubai.

“He has inspired me a lot, the way he conducts himself on and off the court. I had a two-week training period with him where I got to play with him and practice. Again, this Olympics semi final match against him. Yeah, again it has been quite inspiring for me that I played and I know in the match I had him. I had also beaten him in the past. These kind of things motivate me that yes I'm on the right track but again lot of work is there,” he added.

Earlier, Axelsen also was all praise for Lakshya and he even made a massive prediction.

"Lakshya is an amazing player. He has shown in this Olympics that he is a very, very strong competitor and I am sure in four years from now, he will be one of the favourites to win the gold. (He is) an amazing talent and a great guy and I wish him all the best,” Axelsen said.

"Can't Take Bangladesh Lightly": Ex-India Star's Warning For Rohit And Co

Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina said that Bangladesh cannot be taken lightly as the Asian side has a fine bowling attack as India prepares, adding that this series will be a practice match ahead of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Raina was speaking at a Legends League Cricket (LLC) event in Delhi on Thursday. Speaking to ANI, Raina said, "Now, a team for Tests will be formed. Top players playing Duleep Trophy is a nice initiative by the BCCI. You get to know a lot of things when you play red-ball cricket."

"You cannot take Bangladesh lightly as they have a fine spin bowling attack and some good players who have done well for a long time. This series will be a fine match practice for the tour to Australia," he added.

The Duleep Trophy, which marks the beginning of red-ball cricket in the domestic season, will feature top Indian stars from the international circuit and emerging talents competing at the highest level. The tournament is set to begin on September 5, 2024, in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh and M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

Star India batters Rishabh Pant, Kishan, Shubman Gill and many more players are set to feature in the Duleep Trophy 2024-25 season.

Also, India will be playing a two-match series against Bangladesh at home from September 19 to October 1, in which Bangladesh spinners like Shakib Al Hasan, Taijul Islam, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mahedi Hasan etc could feature. The squad for the Indian tour has not been announced yet.

This will be followed by a three-match test series against New Zealand from October 16 to November 5. These two series' will pave India's preparation for the Border Gavaskar Trophy later this year.

Speaking on Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant's ICC T20 World Cup campaign, Raina lauded Pant for his "passion, hard work, mentality and great determination".

"The way he practises, he is doing very good wicket-keeping, he has batted very well and when you win the World Cup you know how much fun it is," added Raina.

Pant was the third-highest run-getter for India in their T20 World Cup triumph. He amassed 171 runs at an average of 24.42 in eight matches and also contributed with his skills behind the stumps with 14 dismissals, the most by a wicketkeeper in a single T20 WC edition. His influential performances helped India end their 13-year-long ICC World Cup drought.

On the future of a polarising Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL) next year, Raina said that the rule adds and changes a lot within the game by adding one extra batter or bowler to the side and expressed his preference for "old school cricket" with 11 players.

Legends League Cricket will be played in India and Qatar from September 11 to October 5 this year.

Rashid Khan Takes Break From Test Cricket To Manage His Back

Afghanistan cricket's poster boy Rashid Khan will not play the Test format in the near future to nurse his back after having undergone a surgery last year. A source in the Afghanistan Cricket Board told PTI that Rashid and the team management had decided mutually on his break from the longest format considering his back issues. Earlier this week, he was not named in the preliminary squad for the one-off Test against New Zealand in Greater Noida from September 9.

Rashid was out of action for four months after undergoing a back surgery following the ODI World Cup in India in October-November. He was part of the more recent T20 Word Cup in the USA and Caribbean where he captained Afghanistan to the semifinals.

The 25-year-old recently played three games in as many days in the Shpageeza T20 league in Kabul, taking six wickets in total.

"The plan for Rashid after the surgery was to gradually increase his workload. Not playing the longer format for the next six months to one year was also part of the plan.

"In Tests, he would be required to keep bowling from one end and his back is not ready for that kind of workload. He should be available for the ODI series against South Africa next month," the source said.

Rashid has played five Tests, 103 ODIs and 93 T20Is for Afghanistan, who hardly get to play the five-day game against top teams like New Zealand.

He had also suffered a hamstring injury during The Hundred in the UK earlier this month.

The Afghanistan squad is already in Greater Noida, its adopted home venue, and have begun preparation for the Test against New Zealand.

Rashid should be able to play the three ODIs against South Africa in the UAE from September 18, the first ever bilateral series between the two nations.

India's Armless Archer Sheetal Finishes 2nd In Ranking Round At Paralympics

India's armless archer Sheetal Devi finished second in the women's individual compound open ranking round with a stunning performance to directly make a round of 16 entry in the Paris Paralympics on Thursday. The 17-year-old Devi from Jammu and Kashmir, who shoots with her legs as she was born without arms, scored a total of 703 points out of possible 720 to finish second behind Oznur Girdi Cure of Turkey, who set a ranking round world record of 704 points.

In fact, Devi also got past the ranking round world record of 698 set by Phoebe Pine Paterson of Great Britain earlier this month, but the Turkish archer overtook her to claim the coveted mark.

Devi shot 59 10s and 24 Xs while her Turkish opponent had 56 10s and 29 Xs in the 72-arrow contest on the opening day of competitions at the Paralympic Games. The top-four finishers in the ranking round, including Devi, got byes from the round of 32 competition and they will feature in the round of 16 on Saturday.

Devi will face the winner of round of 32 match between Mariana Zuniga of Chile and Choi Na Mi of Korea, who finished 15th and 18th respectively in the ranking round.

Zuniga had won a silver in the women's individual compound open in the Tokyo Paralympics.

Other Indian in the fray, Sarita finished ninth with a score of 682 and will face Abdul Jalil Nur Jannaton of Malaysia in the round of 32 on Friday.

Devi had become a sensation during last year's Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China, where she became the first Indian woman to win two gold medals in a single edition of the Games. She had won a third medal -- a silver -- also.

She had won gold medals in the women's individual compound as well as mixed team event and a silver in the women's doubles in Hangzhou.

Discovered at a military camp in a remote part of Kishtwar in Jammu and Kashmir and adopted by the Indian Army in her childhood, Devi also became the first armless woman to win a Para World Archery Championships medal last year.

Devi was born with phocomelia syndrome, a rare congenital disorder which kept her limbs underdeveloped.

In the men's individual recurve open ranking round, Tokyo Paralympics bronze medallist Harvinder Singh finished ninth with a score of 637.

He faces Tseng Lung-Hui of Chinese Taipei in the round of 32 on September 4.

In para-archery, athletes of two classes -- wheelchair (W1, W2) and open -- can compete (in same event) at the Paralympic Games.

For para-archers competing in wheelchairs, their arms must demonstrate some degree of loss of muscle strength, co-ordination, or range of movement.

Para-archers in open category can compete in a wheelchair, standing up or leaning on a stool. They have either extremely limited movement in their trunk and limbs with normal arm function or balance issues.

Devi competes in standing position while Oznur Girdi Cure of Turkey, who finished first in the ranking round, is of W2 category.

Competitions include a ranking round where the archers shoot 72 arrows (12 ends of six arrows each) over distances of 50m or 70m. Each archer has four minutes to shoot their six arrows.

After the ranking round, para-archers compete head-to-head in elimination rounds consisting of five ends, with athletes using three arrows per end.

Para-archery events include recurve and compound bows, as well as mixed team.

Uruguayan Footballer Dies After Collapsing Mid-Game In Brazil

Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo of the Nacional club died in Brazil Tuesday, five days after collapsing from a heart attack during a match against Sao Paolo, his team announced late Tuesday. The 27-year-old collapsed in the 84th minute of a match for a place in the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores -- the most prestigious club tournament in Latin America. He was taken by ambulance to the Albert Einstein Hospital, where physicians said he suffered "cardiac arrest of undetermined onset, secondary to an arrhythmia."

Izquierdo, who was sedated and on a ventilator, later suffered "a progression of brain involvement and an increase in intracranial pressure," the hospital said. "With the deepest pain and shock in our hearts, the Club Nacional de Football announces the death of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo," Nacional wrote on the social network X, in a message accompanied by a black and white photograph of the athlete. Izquierdo's wife Selena gave birth to his second child a week ago.

On Monday it emerged that the player had been diagnosed with "a small arrhythmia" a decade ago during routine check-ups of youth teams, according to the director of the National Sports Secretariat, Sebastian Bauza.

Club president Alejandro Balbi said Izquierdo "had never shown any cardiac episode" during examinations at the club, which he joined in January this year. Izquierdo was born in Montevideo in 1991 and began his career in 2017, playing in several first-division Uruguayan clubs. He also played for Atletico San Luis in Mexico.

Let WFI Work, Women Wrestlers Can Get 4-5 Medals In 2028: Sanjay Singh

WFI President Sanjay Singh on Monday said India have the potential to win four to five medals in women's wrestling at the 2028 Olympic Games but for that to happen "a couple of institutions" will have to stop interfering in day-to-day functioning of the national federation. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) remains suspended by the Sports Ministry even as world governing body UWW had lifted its suspension in February following conduct of its election. The ministry had suspended WFI on December 24, three days after it held elections where Sanjay Singh was elected the new President.

Ministry's action came in the wake of WFI's announcement of hosting U-15 and U-20 Nationals, hours after the election.

Ministry said the announcement was against the the rules since a 15-day notice was required so that players could prepare.

WFI had maintained that young wrestlers would have lost one year if it waited for 15 days since 2023 season would have finished by then.

IOA, on being asked by the ministry, had formed an ad-hoc panel to run the federation but dissolved the panel recently. However, the ministry is yet to lift its suspension "If WFI is allowed to do its work independently and a couple of institutions stop interfering in our functioning, we can get the country four to five medals in women's wrestling in the next Olympics," Sanjay Singh told PTI.

The WFI President's comment has two days after India's U17 women team won the World title, riding on a phenomenal performance in Amman where five Indian wrestlers emerged world champions apart from winning a silver and two bronze.

Sanjay Singh also urged Vinesh Phogat to reconsider her retirement decision.

Vinesh announced her retirement from the sport after missing out on a medal at the Paris Olympics. She was disqualified after weighing 100 grams more before the women's 50kg final.

"If Vinesh Phogat has to play pure wrestling, she should reconsider her decision of retirement as the new generation of women wrestlers will get inspiration from her and move forward.

"The way she is sharing a political platform nowadays, if she has to do politics (in future), then she should not do politics in wrestling."

On speculation that Phogat might enter the political arena, Singh refused to comment saying it was a personal matter of the 30-year-old wrestler. He said he would extend full support to Phogat if she returns to competitive wrestling.

Singh also said that the movement of the country's wrestlers in 2023 has given the WFI a "very big lesson".

The agitation was launched against the then WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in an alleged sexual harassment case.

"We were expecting Indian wrestlers to win six medals in the Paris Olympics but wrestling activities were stopped for 18 months under the conspiracy of anti-national forces. Due to this movement, the country could get only one medal in the Olympics," he said.

"I want to keep wrestling and politics separate. So I don't want to name anyone who started this movement, but it is because of politics entering wrestling that this fate has happened to wrestling at the Paris Olympics," he said.

He also informed that WFI is considering opening a wrestling academy in Ujjain, the religious city of Madhya Pradesh.

The state Chief Minister Mohan Yadav is the president of the state wrestling association.

"Initial discussion with the chief minister regarding the plan to open a wrestling academy in Ujjain is already underway," he added.

Waqar Younis' Three-Week Stint As Advisor To PCB Chairman Ends

Former captain Waqar Younis' three-week stint as an advisor on cricket affairs to the chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board has ended on August 19. A well placed source in the Pakistan Cricket Board told PTI that Waqar was initially appointed as a consultant on cricket-related affairs to the incumbent PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, for a period of three weeks. "The board has also advertised the post of advisor on cricket affairs and now candidates who have applied would be interviewed," the source said.

The source informed that there is no clarity whether Waqar has reapplied for the role after PCB's advertisement. "Apparently, Waqar has not responded to the ad," the source added A few other sources in the board have shared that Waqar, who played 87 Tests and 262 ODIs for Pakistan, had asked PCB chairman to allow him a short stint in the role before he could decide on a longer run.

"But in his consultancy role, Waqar was clearly not comfortable and apparently some influential people in the board, linked to the Pakistan team affairs and international cricket matters, were also not very cooperative with him," another source said.

Waqar was present with chairman Mohsin Naqvi after his appointment but he has not attended the office since August 19.

The source said it is also possible that Waqar would be given a field job with the national team at a later stage by the chairman, but for now, his short stint has come to an end.

Rohit Sharma Hails "The Ultimate Jatt" Shikhar Dhawan Following Retirement

The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma hailed his long-time opening partner Shikhar Dhawan following his international and domestic cricket retirement, calling him "The Ultimate Jatt". Dhawan announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket on Saturday after an illustrious career that saw him flourish as a dependable and swashbuckling opener across all formats, most notably ODIs and during multi-nation 50-over tournaments. Taking to X, Rohit shared a series of pictures with Shikhar, showing their rock-solid bond on and off the field.

The 'Hitman' in his caption reflected on the times spent "sharing rooms to sharing lifetime memories on the field" and how having the left-hander by his side made his cricketing journey easier.

"From sharing rooms to sharing lifetime memories on the field. You always made my job easier from the other end. THE ULTIMATE JATT. @SDhawan25," said the caption of Rohit's Instagram post.

Shikhar wasted no time in replying to opening partner's touching post, saying, "Thanks Bro." on X.

Ranked as the eighth most successful pair in ODIs, the duo scored 5,193 ODI runs as a pair in 117 innings at an average of 45.15, with 18 century partnerships and 15 half-century stands. Their best partnership was of 210 runs.

As Rohit started to transition into an opening batter from 2013 onwards, it was Dhawan's explosive starts that would often help Rohit take his time and settle. In overs 1-10, Dhawan batted with a strike rate of 82.5, as compared to Rohit's 72.4. From overs 11-20, Rohit would up the ante with a strike rate of 89.7, as compared to Dhawan's 88. In 31-40 overs, both would accelarate even more, scoring at SRs of 119 and 117.8 respectively.

In his illustrious career, runs effortlessly came off Dhawan's bat. He represented India across all formats, but ODI was his forte. In 167 appearances, the southpaw produced swashbuckling performances and racked up 6,793 runs at an average of 44.1, including 17 centuries and 39 fifties.

In the longest format of cricket, where he stitched up memorable partnerships with Murali Vijay, Dhawan garnered 2,315 runs in 34 matches at an average of 40.6. His Test career was laced with seven tons and five half-centuries.

In the T20I format, Dhawan made 68 appearances and scored 1,759 runs at an average of 27.9, including 11 fifties.

In the domestic circuit, Dhawan played 122 first-class cricket matches and handsomely scored 8,499 runs at an average of 44.26, including 25 centuries and 29 fifties.

In List A, Dhawan played 302 matches and scored a whopping 12,074 runs at an average of 43.90. His remarkable statistics are further glistened by 30 centuries and 67 half-centuries.

Dhawan is also the second-highest run-getter of all time in the Indian Premier League (IPL), scoring 6,769 runs in 222 matches at an average of 35.25, with two centuries and 51 fifties.

He also secured an ICC Champions Trophy with India in 2013 and an IPL title with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2016.

Four Indian Women Wrestlers Become U-17 World Champions In Jordan

In a sparkling show by India's women wrestlers at the Under-17 World Championships, four grapplers annexed the titles here on Thursday and at least two more are in gold medal contention. Aditi Kumari (43kg), Neha (57kg) and Pulkit (65kg) and Mansi Lather (73kg) won world titles in their respective categories with remarkable ease.Kajal (69kg) and Shrutika Shivaji Patil (46kg) will also compete in the gold medal bouts on Friday after making the finals. India can bag more medals as Raj Bala (40kg) will compete in the bronze play-off while Muskan (53kg), Rajnita (61kg) are still in contention for podium finishes by making the repechage round.

India are now certain to win the women's team trophy despite not fielding a wrestler in the 49kg weight class.

Aditi emerged champion in the 43kg, blanking Maria Louiza Gkika of Greece 7-0 in the title clash.

In the 57kg final, Neha overpowered Japan's So Tsuitsui as she stood out with her double-leg attacks. Neha hardly gave a chance to her rival in the gold medal bout.

In the 65kg final, Pulkit faced Daria Frolova, who is competing as a neutral athlete, and won 6-3.

She was leading 5-0 but conceded a pushout point and caution late in the bout that allowed Frolova to gain three points.

Frolova made a desperate attempt to get the winning move but Pulkit defended well in the final 20 seconds to claim the title.

Lather raced to a 5-0 lead against Hanna Pirskaya in the 73kg final and then found a way to pin her rival, ending the bout in style.

India also won two bronze medals in Greco Roman style with Ronak Dahiya and Sainath Pardhi (51kg) ending on podiums.

"No One Better": NZ Star Reserves High Praise For Jasprit Bumrah

New Zealand captain Tim Southee reckons India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has looked more formidable since making a comeback from a back injury, which kept him out of action for a major part of the last year. Bumrah, who was recently described as the "best all-format bowler in the last five-six years" by the legendary Ricky Ponting, has been at the forefront of the Indian team's success since making a comeback in August 2023 after being out of action since September 2022.

"To be able to firstly bounce back from the major injury and come back, he's even better than what he was beforehand. Throw in on top of that, having to juggle multiple formats, can be difficult at times as well," Southee said on the sidelines of the Ceat Cricket Rating Award on Wednesday.

"He seems to have been able to do that with ease as well. He's probably more experienced, understands his game a bit more. He probably had that time where he was injured to come back and be recharged, refreshed." "We are just seeing a great version (of Bumrah) across all three formats. He's brilliant across all three at the moment. I don't think there's anyone that he's better in (better than him), he is tremendous across all three (formats)," he said.

Southee acknowledged having a discussion with the New Zealand head coach Gary Stead on the possibility of him missing a few Tests in the subcontinent.

The Kiwis are scheduled to play a one-off Test against Afghanistan in Noida before travelling to Sri Lanka for a two-Test series. Southee's team will then return to India in October for a three-Test series following which it will return home for three Tests against England.

"It's just natural when you're in this part of the world, spin plays a big part. But ideally, I'd like to play all the Test matches available. I love Test cricket, but I understand there's balance to the side and obviously it's not easy," he said.

"We've got nine Test matches in the next few months. There's a lot of Test cricket, so it's all about managing the workloads. But for me, as long as you're fit and ready to go, then I'd like to play every game," he said.

India and New Zealand will be engaged in a three-Test series for the first time since 2016-17 and Southee welcomed the idea.

"As players, you want to play more Test cricket. It's nice to be able to come here and play three Test matches," he said.

With former Kiwi captain Kane Williamson, opening batter Devon Conway and Finn Allen declining New Zealand Cricket's central contracts for 2024-25, Southee said two of those players will still be available for the majority of the Tests.

"It's the way that cricket is going and then the amount of T20 leagues that are popping up. Look at it from Kane and Devon's point of view; they're still committed to New Zealand cricket, we have nine Test matches coming up and they are committed to those.

"As far as the Test side is concerned, it's not too dissimilar. They're still going to be there even though they don't have a New Zealand contract," he said.

However, Southee said he had no answer to how the contract situation would be between players and boards given the proliferation of multi-format leagues around the world.

"I don't have the answer right now, I don't think many people do. So I think it's about working out what is the best for each individual board and their players.

"New Zealand Cricket have seen to think that's the best way for the next 12 months. I don't think Kane and Devon will miss a lot of cricket for New Zealand.

"For them to have the flexibility in doing that. But still also be committing to New Zealand, which I think that's where the casual playing agreement comes in," he added.

Neeraj, Duplantis, Tebogo: Starcast At Lausanne Diamond League

Armand Duplantis and Letsile Tebogo headline a raft of Olympic champions who will descend on Lausanne for the first Diamond League meeting since the end of the Paris Games. Some 18 current Olympic or world champions will be present in the Swiss city for Thursday's meet, coming just 12 days after the last of the track and field action at the Stade de France. Duplantis defended his gold in France's national stadium and improved his own world record to 6.25 metres.

In Lausanne, the Swede will take part in a City Event held on an esplanade bordering Lac Leman -- better known in English as Lake Geneva -- on Wednesday, 24 hours before the main fare at the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise.

Duplantis will be up against American Sam Kendricks, the silver medallist in Paris, and also Renaud Lavillenie, the 2012 Olympic champion and former world record holder who failed to qualify for what would have been his home Games.

"It's the only pole vault event next to a lake," Duplantis said.

"I love to have it scenic, fun, more like a show. It suits us well. I jumped 6.10m in Lausanne last time and have felt well rested since Paris.

"I think there are still some good jumps in my legs," said the US-born Swede, who left Paris the day after the event for a "much-needed vacation with my girlfriend to chill as much as I could".

Tebogo v Kerley

Botswana's Tebogo will race the 200m on Thursday, the event he won in Paris when he outstripped a Covid-hit Noah Lyles.

The American, a three-time world champion in the distance and the 100m winner in the French capital, has called time on his season.

Tebogo will be up against Fred Kerley, the triple world champion (100m and relay) and 100m bronze medallist in Paris, and his US teammate Erriyon Knighton.

The 21-year-old Botswanan raced to victory in an African record of 19.46sec, a time that took him to fifth on the all-time list.

He also became the first African to win the Olympic 200m metres. The men's 800m race in this 11th stage of the Diamond League circuit also promises to be a thriller.

Four men in the Olympic final dipped under the 1min 42sec mark for the first time ever.

And four of the top five finishers from the Games will run in Lausanne: Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya, the third fastest man in history, Olympic silver medallist and world champion Marco Arop of Canada, and the fourth and fifth-placed finishers in Paris, American Bryce Hoppel and Spain's Mohamed Attaoui.

Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen will bid to put the disappointment of his 1500m outing at the Paris Games behind him when takes on a strong field in Switzerland.

American Cole Hocker progressed to an upset victory in Paris, outsprinting world champion Josh Kerr of Britain, American Yared Nuguse and Ingebrigtsen.

The Norwegian finished fourth, left ruing an insanely fast opening 400m that left him vulnerable to a late attack.

Ingebrigtsen did, however, rebound to win the Olympic 5,000m title and now has an immediate chance of redemption over the shorter distance, with Hocker also listed.

There is also a high-quality field assembled in the women's high jump, Ukraine's Yaroslava Mahuchikh up against Australia's Paris silver and bronze medallists Nicola Olyslagers and Eleanor Patterson.

Mahuchikh set a new world record of 2.10m at the Paris Diamond League meet and while not reaching those same heights at the Olympics, seems in unbeatable form.

Femke Bol is another athlete on show, competing in the 400m hurdles, in which she won bronze in Paris behind record-setting Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Anna Cockrell.

CAS Gives Reasons For Rejecting Vinesh's Appeal, Says "No Tolerance.."

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ruled that athletes will have to ensure that they remain below their weight limit and no exception can be provided under any circumstance, while giving reasons for its rejection of Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal against her disqualification from the Paris Olympics final. An ad-hoc division of the CAS had on August 14 rejected her appeal against a gut-wrenching disqualification from the final for being 100gm overweight, a decision that evoked a sharp reaction from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The CAS on Monday published a detailed decision, furnishing reasons why Vinesh's appeal was rejected.

"The problem for the Athlete is that the Rules are clear as to the weight limit and are the same for all participants. There is no tolerance provided for -– it is an upper limit. It does not even allow for the weight of the singlet. It is clearly up to an athlete to ensure that they remain below that limit," the CAS said.

"There is no dispute that the Applicant was above the weight limit. She gave the above evidence clearly and directly at the hearing. Her case is that the amount of excess was 100g and that a tolerance should apply as this is a small excess and explicable for reasons such as drinking water and water retention, in particular during the pre-menstrual phase."

The 29-year-old Vinesh was disqualified on the morning of the women's 50kg freestyle final.

The decision on her appeal was rendered after three postponements.

In her appeal, Vinesh had demanded that she be given a joint silver with Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who lost to her in the semifinals but was promoted to the summit clash following the Indian's disqualification. The gold was claimed by American Sarah Ann Hildebrandt.

Ivan Toney-Less Brentford Get The Better Of Crystal Palace

Brentford shrugged off the absence of Ivan Toney to get their Premier League season off to a flying start with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday. Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa got the goals for the Bees, who had left out England international Toney over speculation surrounding his future. Toney has less than a year left to run on his contract with the London club and is attracting interest from Saudi clubs after his role in helping England to the Euro 2024 final. Brentford boss Thomas Frank said pre-match his side had shown last season they can cope without Toney -- who missed much of last term due to a betting ban.

Marc Guehi did captain Crystal Palace despite the interest in him shown by Newcastle.

The England defender had an outstanding Euros but a moment to forget for Brentford's opening goal.

Mbeumo raced onto Wissa's pass and cut inside Guehi before firing into the far corner.

Palace ended last season in sensational form under Oliver Glasner and will feel hard done by not to have earned at least a point.

Eberechi Eze had a brilliantly executed near post free-kick harshly ruled out for a foul by Will Hughes when the score was still level at 0-0.

A bright Palace start to the second half was rewarded when Ethan Pinnock turned Daniel Munoz's header into his own goal.

Seconds later, Odsonne Edouard slotted home Eze's pass only to be denied by a marginal offside decision.

Instead it was Brentford who grabbed the vital third goal.

Dean Henderson could only parry Nathan Collins' shot straight into the path of Wissa, who bundled home.

Eze was twice denied by Mark Flekken in the closing stages but Brentford held out for an impressive three points.

Champions Manchester City begin the defence of their Premier League title later on Sunday with a trip to face Chelsea in Enzo Maresca's first match in charge of the Blues.

"Will Feed Her Churma, Halwa....": Vinesh Phogat's Mother Gets Emotional

Harvinder and Premlata, the brother and mother of former Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, expressed happiness at her warm welcome back home after Paris Olympics heartbreak, where she became the first Indian woman to reach the final of the wrestling competition but got disqualified for breaching the weight limit. Vinesh arrived at Delhi's Indira Gandhi National Airport on Saturday to a rousing reception.

Speaking to ANI during her roadshow in Jhajjar, Harvinder, the wrestler's brother said that people's love and support will be a source of strength to her in such tough times.

"It feels happy seeing people's love and support for her. These people and their support will give her the strength to go forward," said Harvinder.

Wrestler's mother Premlata also told ANI, "It feels really good (on welcoming her). She did really well and the country has given her a lot of love and support. Will feed her churma, halwa, chutney, dahi when she comes back home."

The Haryana-born wrestler turned emotional and broke into tears during the reception at the airport today.

In Paris, Vinesh became the first Indian woman wrestler to make the final of an Olympics.

She was, however, disqualified from the 50 kg gold medal bout after she was found to be 100 gms overweight. On Wednesday the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed her petition to be awarded a joint silver. She announced her retirement from wrestling on August 8, a day after her disqualification.

Vinesh was set to face Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the United States for the gold medal on August 7. She was disqualified before the women's 50kg final after exceeding the 50kg weight limit before the final on August 7. During the weigh-in, she was found to be 100 grams over the limit. Following her disqualification, Vinesh appealed to award her the silver medal in the 50kg weight category

A huge crowd gathered at the Delhi Airport to welcome the 29-year-old. Fans showered flower petals upon her arrival in the national capital.

On August 8, Vinesh penned an emotional to announce her decision to retire from wrestling. "Maa kushti (wrestling) won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream and my courage have been broken. I don't have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for forgiveness," Phogat said in her post.

Recovering From Dengue, Pacer Umran Reveals Future Plans To Improve Skills

Indian Premier League (IPL) has produced a lot of domestic talent for Team India. From the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Yashasvi Jaiswal, IPL is highly responsible for taking Indian cricket to new heights. One such talented cricketer, who rose to fame through IPL is pacer Umran Malik. The Jammu and Kashmir based pacer, who played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, took everyone by surprise as he troubled the batters with his blistering speed in IPL 2022. His performance even led to his Team India debut in June 2022 against Ireland.

However, the 24-year-old pacer also proved to be really expensive as many batters found numerous ways to score runs against him. As a result of that Umran lost his charm and featured in only eight matches in IPL 2023, followed by only one match in 2024.

Umran recently revealed that he would be missing out on the ongoing Buchi Babu tournament in Tamil Nadu, due to dengue.

"I would have loved to play in the tournament, but I'm just recovering from dengue," Umran was quoted by The Indian Express as saying.

Umran, who worked with former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan during the Ranji Trophy, stated that the less domestic appearance has resulted in his poor form.

"I was fully prepared that season, but the weather didn't help. Then I was really looking forward to the IPL as I'd gained a lot in the months preceding the IPL. Unfortunately even that didn't go the way I wanted. But it also gave me the time to work on things I wanted to in the practice sessions. I've definitely become a better bowler if you ask me. After the IPL, I injured my hamstring and just as I recovered I'm down with dengue," said Umran.

"These days I'm bowling a lot with the new ball because I believe swing can make a huge difference at my pace. I want to learn a few things, especially how to formulate a plan and execute it. If you have that, then you will be better prepared to handle the challenges. When I'm bowling in a match, it is not about myself or what I do. I've to fit into the bowling group and their plans and compliment them," he added.

West Indies vs South Africa, 2nd Test, Live Score Updates

West Indies vs South Africa 2nd Test, Live Updates: West Indies will be taking on South Africa in the second Test of the two-match series on Thursday in Guyana. Earlier on Sunday, the first match of the series ended in a draw after rain played a spoilsport. Alick Athanaze missed out on a maiden Test century but played the key role in ensuring the safety of a draw for the West Indies. Set the unlikely victory target of 298 after the Proteas declared their second innings at 173 for three just before lunch, Atahanze's determined 92 and a fifth-wicket partnership of 65 with Jason Holder (31 not out) guided the hosts from the discomfort of 127 for four just after tea to 201 for five at the end of play. "Sarpanch Sahab": PM Modi's Special Call To Hockey Captain Harmanpreet

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian men's hockey team on its bronze medal success at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. India captain Harmanpreet Singh scored twice as India beat Spain 2-1 in the bronze medal match at Stade Yves-du-Manoir on Thursday. Marc Miralles had pulled Spain in front after converting a penalty stroke in the 18th minute. However, Harmanpreet equalised in the dying embers of the second quarter, before grabbing his second three minutes into the third quarter. Despite Spain's all-out attack in last five minutes of the final quarter, India held on for a famous win and clinced the fourth medal for the country in the ongoing Paris Olympics.

After the match, PM Modi called the Indian hockey team to congratulate the players for their success. During the phone call, PM Modi spoke with captain Harmanpreet and goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who was played his final game for India in the bronze medal match.

During the phone call, Modi called Harmanpreet as "Sarpanch" (leader). Harmanpreet has been nicknamed "Sarpanch" for leading the team from the front at the Paris Olympics, ending the tournament with 10 goals, including two on Thursday.

Modi also asked the retiring Sreejesh to help groom a team for the future.

Meanwhile, this is India's fourth bronze medal, and second in succession following Tokyo, and adds to those eight golds, the last of which came in 1980, and three silvers.

India had won seven of their previous 10 encounters with three-time champions Spain but after a cagey first half they found themselves trailing when Miralles fired an 18th minute penalty stroke past the 'Wall of India' Sreejesh Raveendran, playing his 336th and final international.

Borja Lacalle almost made it two, beating Sreejesh only to see his shot rebound off the post.

India began to press hard and with just a few seconds remaining of the first half, Harmanpreet buried a penalty corner to level the scores.

Three minutes after the break, Harmanpreet repeated the trick, sweeping another penalty corner just inside the Spanish post.

World champions Germany were scheduled to face Netherlands in the gold medal match later on Thursday.

"Boxers Are Given One Hour...": Vijender Blasts Vinesh's Disqualification

India's ace wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who was just one win away from claiming gold at the Paris Olympics 2024, was disqualified just hours ahead of the final on Wednesday. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said that Vinesh, who was competing in the 50kg category, was found 100 grams overweight ahead of the gold medal match. While there were no issues with her weight on Tuesday, the weigh-in on Wednesday found her 100 grams over the weight limit. Olympic medalist boxer Vijender Singh was left fuming by the disqualification and he explained that 100 grams is too less a small a margin for the IOC to take such a big call. In an interview with NDTV. he also said that boxers are given extra time to cut weight if they are overweight in international competitions.

"It is unprecedented for a player to be disqualified like this in the final. 100 grams is nothing. Boxers are given more than an hour to reduce weight," the Olympic medallist boxer said.

“In case an athlete is over-weight - sweating suit, steam bath, sauna , running - all are done to reduce those few grams. We leave water, food and everything. That is why I have no idea what happened. This is a very harsh decision. We are not happy and we should fight the decision," Vijender added.

According to a report, Vinesh not only cut her hair to fall under the weight category but also tried to draw some blood out of her veins, hoping to meet the criteria.

However, the steps taken by the wrestler did not yield the expected results.

Sources also told NDTV that Vinesh's weight went up by 1kg on Tuesday night and although she worked out for almost the entire night, she could only manage to bring down her weight by 900 grams.

Olympics: Indian Sailors Way Beyond Qualification Zones At End Of Day 4

Indian sailors Vishnu Saravanan and Nethra Kumanan ended day four of their campaign at the ongoing Paris Olympics outside the qualification zones in the men's and women's dinghy competitions on Sunday, finishing in 24th and 31st spots respectively after eight races. On day four, Vishnu was in seventh place with seven race points at the end of race seven. However, he slipped to 24th place with 24 race points at the end of the eighth race. At the end of race six on day three, the Asian Games bronze medalist Vishnu was in 13th place with 13 race points. After the fifth race, Saravanan was in 21st place with 21 race points.

Vishnu ended day two at the end of race four in 19th place with 19 race points. At the end of race three, he was in 20th place with 20 race points. On day one, taking part in race one with 43 competitors, Vishnu finished in 10th place with 10 race points. However, at the end of race two, he slipped to 34th place with 34 race points.

Boats that finish between 1st and 10th place at the end of race 10 will progress to the medal race.

On day four, Nethra was in 21st place with 21 race points at the end of the seventh race, but she slipped to 31st place with 31 race points at the end of the eighth race.

In the women's dinghy competition, Nethra finished in 20th place with 20 race points at the end of race six. After race five, she was in a much lower position, at 28th with 28 race points. After race four, Nethra was in 28th place with 28 race points.

In the women's dinghy competition, Nethra finished day two at the end of race three with 27 race points in 27th place. At the end of race two, she was in 15th place with 15 race points.

On day one, Nethra finished in sixth place with six race points at the end of race one.

Saravanan secured India its first sailing quota for the 2024 Olympics in the men's dinghy this January in Australia at the ILCA 7 Men's World Championship 2024. He also secured a bronze medal in the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year in the men's dinghy competition.

Kumanan secured India's second Paris 2024 Olympics quota in sailing during the Last Chance Regatta, an Olympic qualifier event, held in Hyeres, France in April. She was competing in the women's dinghy (ILCA 6). Nethra managed to get a fifth-place finish after scoring 67 points on the overall leaderboard. Due to being the top performer among all sailors from the Emerging Nations Program (ENP) who were yet to get a quota, she managed to earn her country a ticket to the Olympics.

'Overwhelmed' Yulo Wins Historic Gymnastics Olympic Gold For Philippines

Carlos Yulo triumphed on Saturday in the men's floor exercise of the gymnastics in Paris for only the second Olympic gold in the history of the Philippines. The 24-year-old broke down in tears after matching the achievement of weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, who won gold at the Covid-delayed 2020 Tokyo Games. "I just went for it, I didn't hesitate," said Yulo. The former world champion perfectly executed his routine, ending with a sure-footed landing to score 15.000 points. It sealed the first gymnastics Olympic medal ever for the Philippines.

Defending champion and world titleholder Artem Dolgopyat of Israel was pushed into silver with 14.966.

"The past months (in general) were hard. I had some problems with my leg and also the training was difficult," said the 27-year-old Dolgopyat.

"It's a hard time in Israel. I tried to do my best in the competition, to show everyone that Israel is very strong and that we can win medals."

Britain's Jake Jarman, who had scored highest in qualifying a week ago, achieved 14.933 to take bronze at Bercy Arena.

Yulo had warned he was "shooting for the stars" in Paris after missing out on the podium in Tokyo.

And his acrobatic and technically difficult routine proved a hit, scoring higher than the 14.766 he had garnered in qualifying.

"I'm so overwhelmed. I'm feeling grateful for having this medal and for God. He protected me, as always," said Yulo, who has a chance of another medal in the vault final on Sunday.

"He gave me the strength to get through this kind of performance and perform this well."

China's Xiao Ruoteng, the Tokyo floor bronze medallist, slumped to last in the eight-man final after hopping out of bounds after his opening jump to finish with 13.933.

Xiao had been bidding for gold to add to his silver in the men's team event and bronze in the all-around competition at the Paris Games.

Watch: Olympics Gender Row Boxer Cries After Getting Assured Of Bronze

The Algerian boxer embroiled in a major gender controversy guaranteed herself at least bronze at the Paris Olympics on Saturday, bursting into tears after winning her quarter-final. Imane Khelif, who has found herself in the eye of a global storm along with another boxer from Taiwan, beat Hungary's Anna Luca Hamori with a unanimous points decision to reach the semi-finals of the women's 66kg category. The duo embraced at the end, before the judges' verdict was delivered, and an animated Khelif left the ring in tears.

Losing semi-finalists in the boxing take home bronze.

Some of the crowd at North Paris Arena, where there were a large number of Algerians, chanted Khelif's name ahead of the bout and cheered her into the ring.

Hamori, who had said it was unfair to face Khelif, was booed into the venue but was magnanimous in defeat.

Khelif faces Janjaem Suwannapheng of Thailand in the last four on Tuesday for a place in the final.

"This is a matter of dignity and honour for every woman or female," the 25-year-old Khelif told BeIN Sports after a second dominant victory in Paris, having dismantled her opening opponent in 46 seconds.

"The entire Arab people have known me for years. For years I have been boxing in international federation competitions, they (IBA) were unfair with me. But I have God."

Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting can also guarantee herself at least a bronze medal on Sunday when she faces Bulgaria's Svetlana Staneva in the quarter-finals of the women's 57kg.

Khelif and Lin were disqualified from last year's world championships, run by the International Boxing Association (IBA), after failing gender eligibility tests.

The controversy ignited on Thursday when Khelif needed less than a minute to force an abandonment against her hurt and tearful Italian opponent Angela Carini.

Carini, who suffered a badly hurt nose and was distressed, collapsed to the centre of the ring in tears.

Khelif and Lin, 28, both competed at the Tokyo Games three years ago, where they failed to win a medal.

They were then disqualified from the IBA's 2023 world championships.

The IBA said this week that the two boxers "did not undergo a testosterone examination but were subject to a separate and recognised test, whereby the specifics remain confidential".

The boxing in Paris is organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which took over because of governance, financial and ethical issues at the IBA.

The IOC has leapt to the defence of Khelif and Lin, with president Thomas Bach on Saturday saying they were born and raised as women, and have passports saying that.

Neither boxer is known to identify as transgender.

Khelif's father Omar told AFP from their Algerian village: "My child is a girl.

"She was raised as a girl. She is a strong girl -- I raised her to work and be brave."

Pak Fan Says Babar Ignored Irfan For Interview, Harbhajan Gives Angry Reply

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has lashed out at a Pakistani fan on social media. The fan had posted a clip where Pakistan captain Babar Azam can be seen rejecting an interview. However, the fan incorrectly said that the interviewer was former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan. Enraged at the false appropriation, Harbhajan jumped to the defence of his former teammate and slammed the fan. In fact, Harbhajan went as far as to mock the English-speaking ability of the Pakistani cricketers.

"Where is Irfan Pathan in this video?" posted Harbhajan on X. "First you don't have the decency to speak. Now your eyes have stopped seeing as well?" responded Harbhajan.

While the original tweeter had said that it was Irfan Pathan who had been rejected by Babar, it was evident that Irfan was nowhere in the video. Harbhajan went on to attack Babar's English.

"In any case, if the question had been asked in English, there would've been a problem," retorted Harbhajan.

Soon after Harbhajan's tweet, the post also came into the attention of Irfan Pathan himself, who asked his ex-teammate to ignore such posts, stating that their only purpose is to gain reach on social media.

"They want reach by lying. Ignore, my friend," replied Irfan to Harbhajan's angry response.

Unfortunately, the original tweet and Harbhajan's response led to several angry back-and-forths as well as hate-mongering from fans of both nations.

Harbhajan's stance on India not visiting Pakistan for 2025 Champions Trophy

Harbhajan has also recently been in the news for supporting the reported decision by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to not travel to Pakistan for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

"I don't think it is safe to go there (Pakistan). Incidents occur there almost every day. The BCCI's stance is completely correct, because the players' security comes first," Harbhajan had told IANS.

India have not toured Pakistan since 2006.

"Shame On Olympics": Internet Fumes Over Explosive 'Gender Row' In Paris

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who failed a gender eligibility test last year, pummelled her Italian opponent in 46 seconds at the Paris Olympics on Thursday as the controversy threatened to overshadow the sixth day of the Games. It will also renew the debate about the inclusion of competitors in other sports at the Olympics and beyond who have undergone similar eligibility testing. A distraught and hurt Angela Carini shrugged off attempts by Khelif to shake her hand afterwards and the Italian collapsed to her knees and sobbed uncontrollably in the middle of the ring.

Khelif advanced to the quarter-finals of the women's 66kg category after unloading two strong punches on Carini, who had blood on her shorts and was unable to carry on because of a badly hurt nose.

The one-sided bout sparked an immediate reaction from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who said the fight was "not on an equal footing".

"I have a big pain in my nose and I said, 'Stop'. It's better to avoid keeping going. My nose started dripping (with blood) from the first hit," said the distressed Carini, who also broke down in tears when talking to reporters.

The 25-year-old sobbed: "I fought very often in the national team. I train with my brother. I've always fought against men, but I felt too much pain today."

Khelif and Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting, who fights on Friday at 57kg, were disqualified from the world championships last year but deemed eligible to box in the women's competition in Paris.

The IOC website for accredited media in Paris said that the 25-year-old Khelif was disqualified after "elevated levels of testosterone failed to meet the eligibility criteria".

Both boxed in the women's event at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.

"I do not agree with the IOC," said Meloni, during a meeting with Italian athletes in Paris.

"I think that athletes who have male genetic characteristics should not be admitted to women's competitions."

Reem Alsalem, the UN special rapporteur on violence against women and girls, wrote on X that Carini "and other female athletes should not have been exposed to this physical and psychological violence based on their sex".

Khelif and Lin were disqualified from the 2023 world championships in New Delhi, which was run by the International Boxing Association (IBA).

Lin was stripped of her bronze medal after undergoing "biochemical" tests mandated by the IBA.

However, the International Olympic Committee is running the boxing in the French capital because of governance, financial and ethical issues at the IBA.

IOC spokesman Mark Adams told reporters this week: "Everyone competing in the women's category... is complying with competition eligibility rules.

"They are women in their passports and it's stated in there that they are female."

'Lies'

Khelif was given a huge roar when she came into the North Paris Arena, where there were numerous Algeria fans with the country's flag.

Before and during the very brief bout they chanted her name, but the action itself was over in a flash.

Khelif stopped only briefly to talk to reporters afterwards, saying: "It's always satisfying to win in such an important competition, but I remain focused on my goal of a medal."

Algeria and Taiwan sprang to the defence of their boxers.

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te gave the 28-year-old Lin his public backing.

"Yu-ting's performances have inspired many Taiwanese players and united Taiwanese people," he wrote on Facebook.

"Now that she is once again on the international stage, we should stand united and cheer for her."

Algeria's Olympic Committee (COA) condemned what it called "malicious and unethical attacks directed against our distinguished athlete, Imane Khelif, by certain foreign media".

The COA hit out at "lies" that were "completely unfair".

At least one woman boxer at the Games has spoken out about her concerns.

Australia's Caitlin Parker is in the 75kg weight class so will not face Khelif or Lin, but she made her stance on the controversy clear.

"I don't agree with that being allowed, especially in combat sports as it can be incredibly dangerous," she said.

"Did Whatever I Could've Done For India": Swapnil After Olympic Bronze

Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale shone at 2024 Paris Olympics with a historic bronze medal in the Men's 50m rifle three positions event on Thursday. Spending much of the early parts of the final in the fifth or sixth position, Swapnil made a dash for the top to clinch the bronze medal. This became India's third shooting medal, as well as the third medal overall, in Paris 2024. "Jo India ke liye kar sakte hain, hamne sab kuch kiya (Whatever I could have done for India, I did)," Swapnil told NDTV in an exclusive interview on Thursday.

Kusale finished on 451.4 points, just 0.5 short of silver medalist Serhiy Kulish at the point of elimination. Kusale made a stunning comeback into the medal spots after languishing near the bottom for the majority of the event.

The 28-year-old from Kambalwadi in the Kohlapur district of Maharashtra became the sixth male shooter from India to win an Olympic medal. The Paris Olympics 2024 is also his maiden appearance at the Games.

Having finished seventh in the qualifying round, Kusale surprised everyone to claim an unprecedented medal. Kusale became the very first Indian to clinch a medal in the 50m rifle three positions event.

Swapnil Kusale draws inspiration from MS Dhoni as he too is a railway ticket collector like the cricket icon was early in his career.

The 29-year-old from Kambalwadi village near Kolhapur in Maharashtra has been competing in international events since 2012 but he had to wait another 12 years to make his Olympics debut at the Paris Games.

Being calm and patient are pre-requisites for a shooter and those two traits are also the hallmark of Dhoni's personality. It is therefore no surprise that Kusale relates to Dhoni's life story.
