Team India Stuck In Barbados Due To Hurricane Beryl: Report

After a grueling month-long T20 World Cup, the Indian cricket team, led by Rohit Sharma, is in the midst of celebrating their glorious victory in Barbados as Hurricane Beryl, a Grade 3 hurricane, approaches the island, threatening to trap the team and pose significant risks of flight cancellations. Sources close to Indian team have told the IANS that, "Rohit-led side is currently stuck in their Hotel Hilton at Barbados." The team, originally scheduled to depart Barbados on Monday at 11 AM local time (8:30 PM IST), is now facing delays due to the impending hurricane. Their planned route was to New York, followed by a connecting flight to Dubai and finally back to India.

Even worse, the Hilton, where India is staying, is close to the coast and is probably going to be hit by a Category 3 hurricane. The hurricane is predicted to hit Barbados at midnight on Sunday or early on Monday morning.

Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced that Grantley Adams International Airport would close by nighttime on Sunday in anticipation of the hurricane, preventing any flights from landing or taking off.

However, it is unknown at this point if they will be able to board that flight, but should they become stuck in terrible weather, they could be left stranded in Barbados for a duration of 36 to 48 hours.

Tulika Maan Secures Paris Olympics Quota In Judo For India

Tulika Maan secured a Paris Olympics quota for India in judo according to the latest rankings issued by the International Judo Federation (IJF) on Tuesday as per Olympics.com. The 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medallist secured the quota in the women's +78kg division through continental quota. For each of the 14 judo weight categories, the 17 highest-ranked athletes (one per country) as per IJF's Olympic rankings obtained a quota.

The 25-year-old racked up 1345 ranking points during the qualification period from June 22, 2022, to June 23, 2024. She finished 36th in the standings to secure a continental quota for India.

Tulika hails from Bhopal and has been a consistent performer at the national and international levels. She took part in the 2017 World Championships in Budapest and the 2017 Tokyo World Judo Championship. She also clinched a silver medal at the Asian Open in Kuwait in 2023.

The National Olympic Committees (NOCs) have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games and athletes' participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.

Avtar Singh (men's 90kg) was the last Indian to compete in judo at the Olympics, in Rio 2016. India are still searching for an Olympic medal in judo.

Judo at the Paris 2024 Olympics will be held at the Champ-de-Mars Arena from July 27 to August 3. As many as 372 judokas - 186 each in men's and women's events will compete at the marquee event.

6.2 overs (1 Run) Leg bye! Too straight, short and on the pads, Tanzid Hasan misses the tickle and the ball brushes his pads and rolls wide of short fine leg for a leg bye.

6.1 overs (1 Run) Starts off on a nagging length, on middle and leg, Najmul Hossain Shanto rocks back and pulls it to the left of long on for a single.

5.6 overs (0 Run) Straight and cannoned full in length, in front of the stumps, Tanzid Hasan prods forward and solidly defends it down the deck. End of the mandatory Powerplay. Bangladesh are 43/1.

5.5 overs (1 Run) Goes full this time and it is outside off, Najmul Hossain Shanto reaches out for the drive but gets an outside edge that flies down to deep third for one.

5.4 overs (0 Run) Takes pace off and keeps it full as well, on middle, Najmul Hossain Shanto waits on it and defends it out on the off side.

5.3 overs (0 Run) Hurls it on a back of a length, on off, Najmul Hossain Shanto gets on top of the bounce and pushes it to backward point.

5.2 overs (1 Run) DROPPED! Rishabh Pant puts it down! That should have been taken! Jasprit Bumrah has his hands on his head in disbelief. Angling away, on a hard length, zipping through, on off, Tanzid Hasan fiddles at the delivery and gets an outside edge that travels quickly to Rishabh Pant who gets his gloves in the correct position but fails to hang on as the ball comes on faster than he expected. It bursts through his gloves and rolls behind for a single.

5.1 overs (2 Runs) Oh, Bumrah is lucky to get away with that! The ball slips off Bumrah's hand and ends up serving a waist-high full toss, outside off, Tanzid Hasan dabs it wide of point for a couple of runs. The replays indicate that the ball was just above the waist but the umpire thought otherwise.

9.6 overs (0 Run) No run there! Flatter and on a nagging length on off stump, Gulbadin Naib stays back and edges it down to backward point looking for a single but won't get it.

9.5 overs (0 Run) Swing and a miss! Flighted up a bit, on the fuller side and outside off, Gulbadin Naib goes for the big heave but misses the ball completely.

9.4 overs (1 Run) Drops it short over middle, Azmatullah Omarzai presses back and pushes it down to long on for one more.

9.3 overs (1 Run) Flatter one and outside off, Gulbadin Naib stays put and hits it down to long off for another single.

9.2 overs (1 Run) This is pushed through around off stump, Azmatullah Omarzai jabs the ball down into the off side and picks up a quick single.

9.1 overs (6 Runs) SIX! Wow, that has traveled a 100 meters! Tosses it up first up and on middle, Azmatullah Omarzai just clears the front leg and swings through the line, smoking it well over long on for a biggie.

8.6 overs (1 Run) Flatter one, angled across the right-hander, Azmatullah Omarzai slaps it aaway square through covers for one.

8.5 overs (1 Run) Tossed up full and on the leg peg, Gulbadin Naib pushes it down to long on and turns the strike over.

8.4 overs (1 Run) On a length and at the stumps, tucked away neatly in front of mid-wicket for one. Suryakumar Yadav throws the ball back to the keeper on a couple of bounce probably to scuff it up a bit more but the umpire gives him a warning.

8.3 overs (0 Run) Flighted up on a good length and around off, Azmatullah Omarzai cuts off the back foot but straight to covers.

8.2 overs (1 Run) Fuller in length and angling across the off stump, Gulbadin Naib plays it down to long on and picks up a single.

8.1 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Gulbadin Naib takes full advantage of the Free Hit. The faster one now, dropped short and on the pads, Gulbadin Naib rocks back and pulls it behind square leg for a boundary.

8.1 overs (2 Runs) No ball! Uh, oh! A cardinal sin from Kuldeep Yadav on his very first delivery of the tournament. This is tossed up a bit full on middle and leg, Azmatullah Omarzai heaves it down to long on for one and Kuldeep has overstepped. Free Hit to follow.

7.6 overs (2 Runs) Another good piece of fielding in the deep, this time from Arshdeep Singh. On a length and around middle, Gulbadin Naib swats the ball across the line and to the right of deep mid-wicket where Arshdeep runs across and dives in before throwing the ball up to the other fielder and keeps it down to two.

7.5 overs (0 Run) Dragged length on the stumps, played off the back foot and just to the bowler's right.

7.4 overs (3 Runs) Excellent work in the deep eventually by Kuldeep Yadav but the batters do pick up three runs. Slightly short and wide of the off stump, Azmatullah Omarzai rocks back and cuts it late and well behind point. Kuldeep makes good ground to his left from deep point and dives across to make the stop. He then rolls over and lets the ball go just before his hand towel which he had tucked in behind hid back made contact with the rope.

7.3 overs (1 Run) Slightly short and around off, Gulbadin Naib presses back and punches it with the full face of the bat to long off for one more.

7.2 overs (1 Run) Floated up around middle and angling in, Azmatullah Omarzai brings out the big heave and gets it wide of long on for just a single.

7.1 overs (0 Run) Bowled from wider on the crease and angled in quite a long way from outside off on a nagging length, Azmatullah Omarzai backs away and dabs it towards backward point.

6.6 overs (0 Run) Smart bowling and Hardik Pandya finishes the over with three dot balls. A slower bumper, well-directed around off stump, Gulbadin Naib bends his back and drops his hands to leave it alone.

6.5 overs (0 Run) Banged in short and wide of the off stump, this one doesn't get up high enough, Gulbadin Naib looks to fetch and pull but is well beaten.

6.4 overs (0 Run) Falls safely! Hardik Pandya brings out the surprise bumper and bowls it around off, angling it in. Gulbadin Naib swivels and looks to pull but is hurried on and the ball goes off the gloves and off the body lobbing up well in front of point.

6.3 overs (0 Run) Too high! Just short of a good length and this one nips back in from middle, Gulbadin Naib plays around the ball and gets hit quite high on the pads as the ball rolls behind point.

6.2 overs (1 Run) Pitched up outside the line of off stump, Azmatullah Omarzai reaches out and drives it on the up to sweeper cover for a single.

6.1 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! A real 'hit-me' ball from Hardik Pandya first up. A long half volley outside the off stump, Azmatullah Omarzai waits well and smashes the drive through covers and picks up a boundary.

5.6 overs (6 Runs) SIX! Gulbadin Naib chances his arm and ends the Powerplay with a biggie. Dragged a bit short and angled into the batter, Naib rocks back and uses those big guns to muscle it over cow corner for a six.

5.5 overs (1 Run) Nice and full on the off stump, driven on the up and firmly to long off for one more.

5.4 overs (1 Run) That's gone through and Axar Patel concedes his first run of the game. Floated up a bit on middle stump, Gulbadin Naib pushes it straight back and Patel fails to gather it and it roll down to long off for a single.

5.3 overs (0 Run) Slightly shorter and slower around off stump, Gulbadin Naib stays back and pushes it away in front of point.

5.2 overs (0 Run) A bit flatter and angled into the stumps, Gulbadin Naib stays back and manages to push it back to the bowler.

5.1 overs (0 Run) Swing and a miss! Tossed up a bit fuller and wider of the off stump, going straight on, Gulbadin Naib does down to play the slog sweep but misses it completely.

"Had To Recall Retired Stars": Ex-PCB Chief Shows True Picture Of Pakistan

Former Pakistan Cricket Board chairman and cricketer Ramiz Raja has slammed the Pakistan team after their group stage exit at the 2024 T20 World Cup. Pinpointing the many different aspects in which they were lacking, Ramiz Raja used the term "mind-boggling" to highlight the poor decision-making during the tournament. After a shock loss to co-hosts USA and then defeat to arch-nemesis India, Pakistan failed to make the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup. As a result, their qualification for the 2026 T20 World Cup is also not guaranteed.

"There was no consistency in selection, their preparation was hodgepodge because they didn't know who was going to open the innings, and they were in experimental mode for a very long time," said Ramiz Raja, in his first criticism of the team.

Pakistan went with the experienced duo of Mohammad Rizwan and captain Babar Azam at the top at the start of the tournament, leaving out young Saim Ayub, a decision that brought in criticism from experts.

"They even had to recall retired players," said Raja, pointing at the re-selection of pacer Mohammed Amir.

"There were also changes in the PCB, and changes as captain," he added. Ramiz Raja was the chairman of the PCB from September 2021 to December 2022, a period in which Pakistan reached the semi-finals and final of consecutive T20 World Cups.

Recently, former India cricketer-turned-expert Sanjay Manjrekar had jokingly suggested that perhaps Ramiz Raja should replace Babar Azam as captain, as Pakistan usually "go to him to save them".

"You've got to sort out the order up here," said Raja, pointing towards his head. Critiquing the game awareness and mentality of the Pakistan players, he pointed out the decision of letting left-hander Fakhar Zaman face left-arm seamer Saurabh Netravalkar in the Super Over against USA.

Despite wins over Canada and Ireland, Pakistan failed to qualify for the Super 8 stage, following their two early defeats.

The ‘Bling Bishop’ Is Sentenced to 9 Years for Fleecing His Flock

By Karen Zraick from NYT New York https://ift.tt/wI5801t

4 Overs, 4 Maidens: NZ Star Returns With Magical Figures To Make History

Lockie Ferguson (3/0) bowled the most economical spell in T20I history as New Zealand shot out Papua New Guinea for a mere 78 in their inconsequential Group C World Cup match on Monday. Ferguson joined Canada skipper Saad Bin Zafar as only the second bowler in T20I history to have sent down each of the allotted four overs as maiden, returning figures of 4-4-0-3 after the latter recorded 4-4-0-2.

The Kiwis were successful in keeping the PNG batters quiet and pinned to their respective ends for the majority of their innings which folded in 19.4 overs, with the first half witnessing the ball racing to the ropes for boundaries only on four occasions.

Trent Boult (2/14), playing in his last T20 World Cup match, began with a two-run first over but it was Tim Southee (2/11) who drew the first blood, getting PNG opener Tony Ura caught at deep backward point.

While there was no success for Boult in terms of wickets with the new ball, Ferguson struck on his very first ball to have PNG skipper Assad Vala caught at widish first slip for six.

Ferguson continued to trouble the opposition batters to such an extent that PNG could not score a run off his first three overs.

The right-arm pacer had further success when he pinned Charles Amini (17) in front of the wickets successfully for the third wicket.

Mitchell Santner (1/17) cut short the progress of Sese Bay (12), getting him caught by Finn Allen at long on after luring the batter to dance down the track and hit him but the connection was improper.

Having not conceded a run yet, Ferguson found an inside edge off Chad Soper's (1) bat crashing into the wickets after he recklessly dangled his bat which came down awkwardly away from his pads.

Ferguson finished his spell without having conceded a run and thus joined Zafar, who was the first to have bowled all four maidens in November 2021 against Panama in T20 World Cup Americas Region Qualifier.

Boult came back into the attack for his first wicket of the contest to clean up Hiri Hiri (7) while Southee bagged another in the next to remove wicketkeeper-batter Kiplin Doriga (5) out of the equation.

Having toiled for success in his first three overs, Ish Sodhi (2/29) grabbed a couple of wickets to wrap up the PNG innings in the last over.

T20 WC Live: Netherlands Face Sri Lanka In A Must-Win Game For Dutch

Sri Lanka vs Netherlands LIVE Updates, T20 World Cup 2024: Netherlands may be out of the 2024 T20 World Cup even before their match against Sri Lanka ends, if Bangladesh beat Nepal. However, the Dutch need to beat Sri Lanka by a healthy scoreline to keep any hopes of qualifying to the Super 8 stage alive. The game also offers Sri Lanka a chance to get their first win, in what has been a hugely disappointing tournament for the 2014 champions. They would likely finish bottom of their group if they fail to win. (Live Scorecard | Points Table)

"Impossible To Beat Germany": Hungary Coach Blasts Team After Swiss Loss

Marco Rossi slammed his Hungary flops after their Euro 2024 campaign started with a dismal 3-1 defeat against Switzerland on Saturday and warned it may be "impossible" to defeat group favourites Germany in their next match. Rossi's side failed to live up to their pre-tournament billing as dark horses with a lacklustre display in Cologne. They were rocked by first half strikes from Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer, who both netted their maiden international goals. Barnabas Varga's second-half header gave Hungary hope, but Breel Embolo came off the bench to net in stoppage-time in his first international appearance since 2022.

"We had a tactical misunderstanding. We didn't cope and have time to press them. The first half was very bad. We were too passive," Rossi said.

"Switzerland are very experienced, with quality players all over the pitch. Against teams at this level, you run the risk of doing bad things. They made the most of our mistakes."

Taking his share of the blame, as well as lambasting his players, Rossi said: "I'm not looking for guilty people. I'm the coach and need to take my responsibility.

"We had some short-comings in individual performances. There aren't many strategies to stop individual mistakes.

"It's hard to say anyone did well apart from two or three performances."

Hungary's defeat leaves them three points behind hosts Germany and second placed Switzerland in Group A.

A loss against Germany on Wednesday would be a hammer blow to Hungary's hopes of making the last 16, and Rossi admitted he is not confident of upsetting the odds.

"We play Germany in four days. I dare anybody to bet one Hungarian forint on us. As of today that looks impossible," he said.

"Germany are a different team than the last Euros, they proved it against Scotland. In my opinion they are the biggest favourite of the European Championship."

Spain's Lamine Yamal, Aged 16, Becomes Youngest Ever Euros Player

Lamine Yamal will become the youngest player ever to feature at a European Championship after Spain coach Luis de la Fuente selected him to start their first match against Croatia on Saturday. The Barcelona winger, aged just 16 years and 338 days old, will beat Polish international Kacper Kozlowski, who played at Euro 2020 at 17 years and 246 days old. If Yamal scores during the tournament in Germany he will break the record for youngest goalscorer at the Euros, set by Johan Vonlanthen for Switzerland against France in 2004.

Yamal has enjoyed a superb breakthrough season at Barcelona after making his debut with the Catalan giants aged 15 in the 2023-24 campaign.

De la Fuente handed Yamal his Spain debut in September last year, when he became the country's youngest ever player and goalscorer against Georgia in Euro 2024 qualifying.

Yamal was not even born when Croatia captain Luka Modric, 38, made his major tournament debut at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

"When I hear that kind of thing, I feel really old," joked Modric.

"Everyone will see him as the greatest danger for Spain, he's got great potential and a great career in front of him."

Switzerland Defeat Hungary 3-1 In UEFA Euro 2024 Opener

Switzerland made a flying start at Euro 2024 as Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer scored their first international goals in a 3-1 win against Hungary on Saturday. Murat Yakin's side raced into a two-goal lead by half-time in Cologne to kick off their Group A campaign in impressive fashion. Duah opened the scoring in only his second international appearance after making his debut earlier this month. The London-born 27-year-old, who plays for Bulgarian club Ludogorets Razgrad, holds dual citizenship with Ghana and Switzerland, who will be relieved he opted to represent them on the evidence of this dynamic display.

After providing the assist for Duah's opener, Bologna midfielder Aebischer netted his maiden Switzerland goal with an eye-catching long-range strike just before the interval.

Barnabas Varga's seventh goal in nine starts for Hungary set up a tense finale, but Breel Embolo struck in stoppage-time to seal the points.

Following reports of a rift between Yakin and his players over tactics, Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka insisted on Friday that the air had been cleared in time for the Euros.

A recent dinner with Yakin featuring "plenty of wine" healed the wounds and the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder showed his support for the manager with an influential performance.

Switzerland beat France on penalties in the last 16 at Euro 2020 before losing a shoot-out to Spain in the quarter-finals.

They will hope to emulate that memorable run after enjoying a perfect start in a group that also includes hosts Germany, who thrashed Scotland 5-1 in the tournament opener on Friday.

Switzerland face Scotland in their second game on Wednesday, while Hungary play Germany the same day.

Hungary boss Marco Rossi had urged his side to embrace the pressure of being ranked as one of Europe's emerging forces.

But their dismal first half proved fatal, showing that comparisons to Hungary's 'Mighty Magyars', who finished as runners-up at the 1954 World Cup, were rather premature.

Swiss on a roll

Switzerland needed just 12 minutes to puncture Hungarian optimism in ruthless fashion.

Aebischer slipped a perfectly weighted pass through the heart of the Hungary defence, sending Duah through to plant a clinical low finish past Peter Gulacsi.

Duah's celebrations were initially curtailed by an erroneous offside flag, but the decision was corrected by VAR as Switzerland's players mobbed their unheralded hero.

Ruben Vargas should have sent the roiling red sea of Switzerland fans into ecstasy again moments later.

Vargas intercepted Milos Kerkez's wayward pass on the edge of the area, but the winger was left holding his head in frustration after his shot cannoned off Gulacsi's shoulder.

The Swiss were on a roll and Willi Orban wasted a golden opportunity to halt their momentum with a close-range header that was straight at Yann Sommer.

It was a crucial moment as Aebischer doubled Switzerland's lead on the stroke of half-time.

With Hungary sat too deep, a flowing Swiss move climaxed with Aebischer curling a superb strike into the far corner from 25 yards.

Varga gave Hungary a lifeline in the 66th minute, just moments after he had missed a sitter.

Dominik Szoboszlai's pin-point cross found Varga and his diving header whistled past Sommer from six yards.

Hungary pushed hard for an equaliser, but Embolo came off the bench to chip a cool finish over Gulacsi in the final seconds.

Watch: Babar Consoles Crying Fan, Gifts Him Gloves, Leaving Fans Impressed

Pakistan are having a horrendous outing in the T20 World Cup 2024. Babar Azam and co kick-started their campaign with a shocking Super Over defeat against USA in their opener. Aiming for redemption, Pakistan squared off against Team India but unfortunately, faced another humiliating defeat in a low-scoring thriller. On the verge of elimination, Pakistan kept their Super 8s hopes alive with a victory against Canada in their previous match. Amid his team's forgettable performance, skipper Babar Azam's one gesture won many hearts.

After the victory against Canada, Babar revealed that he met a young fan during Pakistan's match against India in New York, who was crying. Babar stated that he met the same boy again during the match against Canada but this time, the Pakistan skipper gave him his gloves.

"I met this kid during the India vs Pakistan match. After the anthem, he came to me and started crying. I got worried. I asked if anyone said anything to him. Then he said he is a fan," Babar told presenter Sanjana Ganesan in an interview.

"He did the same thing today (against Canada). He was standing in the line and crying. We all have experienced this. When you meet a star, the excitement is at a different level," he added.

On being asked by Sanjana about his gesture of gifting the gloves to the fan, Babar stated that he got impressed by the dedication of his fan.

"I thought if he is such a big fan then I should also have some responsibility to give him something as a gift. Something memorable. I had my gloves in my hands. I gave him that. He got very excited and started crying even more. I told him not to worry. Then, while crying, he requested me to sign it," said Babar.

Pakistan will now be squaring off against Ireland in their last Group A match of the ongoing T20 World Cup on Sunday in Florida.

Watch: Fans Dance On Street At 2 AM To Celebrate India's Win Over Pakistan

The heartbeats were high. Tension was in the air when India's batting order collapsed against Pakistan's fiery bowling attack during their T20 World Cup 2024, Group A match on Sunday in New York. As India struggled with the bat and got bundled out for just 119, fans' hopes almost shattered, giving them a flashback of the 2021 World Cup loss. However, fate had other plans in store and the tables turned in India's favour in the second innings as they pulled off a stunning six-run victory against Pakistan.

Pacer Jasprit Bumrah was the main architect of India's victory, scalping three wickets and leaking only 14 runs in his four-over spell. Apart from him, vice-captain Hardik Pandya also took two wickets and helped India restrict Pakistan to 113/7.

As India registered a thrilling win against the arch-rivals, their fans had no bounds to their celebration. A perfect example of this statement was seen in Indore, where the fans joyously celebrated India's victory by burning firecrackers, dancing, and cheering.

To make this more special, this celebration was taking place at 2 AM in the morning and the fans left all their worries at home and hopped in the streets.

"Was a good wicket to be honest, compared to the last game. With a bowling lineup like that you feel confident to do the job. Halfway through the stage when they were batting, we got everyone together and said that if it can happen to us, it can happen to them. Little contribution from everyone can make huge difference," said India skipper Rohit Sharma after the win.

"He's going from strength to strength (Bumrah). We all know what he can do. Not going to talk too much about him. Want him to be in that mindset throughout the WC. He's a genius, we all know that. Crowd was superb. They never disappoint wherever we play. I'm sure they'll be going home with a big smile. It's just the start, we have a long way to go," he added.

India will now be going up against USA for their next Group A match on Wednesday in New York.
