"Things Change During World Cup": Ex-India Star Aheaad Of Pakistan Clash

Former India pacer RP Singh believes there will be a lot of pressure on the players during the high-voltage clash between India and Pakistan in the upcoming T20 World Cup. The marquee event is set to kick off on June 1 in the USA and the West Indies. One of the greatest rivalries in the history of cricket, India and Pakistan, will write a new chapter in their story on June 9 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York. While India's World Cup-bound players were engaged in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season to prepare for the tournament, Pakistan played the T20I bilateral series against New Zealand, Ireland, and England.

They drew the five-match T20I series against New Zealand (2-2), won the three-match series against Ireland (2-1), and lost the four-match series against England by 2-0.

Despite Pakistan's dwindling form, RP Singh believes that things change during the World Cup and the level of pressure will be different on the players.

"Pakistan is also a good team. They played against Ireland and suffered a defeat. Things change during the World Cup. The match is always high-voltage so there is a lot of pressure on the players. Indians' performance in the World Cup has always been good. We just lost one match last time, and were dominant throughout," RP Singh told the media during the jersey launch of the World Championship of Legends team India Champions.

The level of pressure on the players and the emotional connection of the fans were visible during their last encounter in the World Cup.

In 2022, the Men in Green were far ahead in the game against India. The Men in Blue needed 28 runs off a mere 8 deliveries to walk away with a victory.

With Virat Kohli on strike against Haris Rauf, the stalwart batter took a step back and struck a towering six right over the head of the Pakistan speedster. In an emotion-packed game, commentator Gerard Whateley delivered the iconic "That is a shot of an emperor" line to describe Kohli's masterclass.

He tonked another maximum on the next ball, which laid the foundation for a successful 160-run chase for India. The match lived up to its hype, and the fans will be expecting another cracker of a match.

Before the epic clash between the two cricketing giants, India will take on Ireland in their tournament opener on June 5. Pakistan will meet the USA in their opening clash on June 6.

The fans will be expecting a similarly intense clash between the two Asian Giants that keeps them on the edge of their seats.

Boxing World Qualifiers: Ankushita, Nishant And Arundhati Reach Quarters

Former world youth champion Ankushita Boro (60kg) and Nishant Dev (71kg) registered comfortable victories to reach quarterfinals of the second Boxing World Olympic Qualifiers on Wednesday. National champion Arundhati Choudhary (66kg) also registered a convincing win to advance to the pre-quarterfinals. Boro was up against Asian champion Rimma Volossenko of Kazakhstan. But the Indian wasn't bothered by the stature of her opponent as she went for her punches from Round 1 and never really looked in trouble throughout the bout to earn a 4-1 verdict.

World championships bronze medallist Nishant was clinical in his 5-0 demolition of Thailand's Peerapat Yeasungnoen to reach the last eight stage.

Earlier in the day, Choudhary began her 66 kg campaign with a clinical round 1 against Stephanie Pieneiro of Puerto Rico.

She was slightly conservative in round 2, consolidating her position before dominating the next round to get an unanimous 5-0 verdict in her favour.

Narender Berwal ( 92kg) also put up a strong fight against Ecuador's Gerlon Gilmar Congo Chala but it wasn't enough to advance to the next round.

The 2022 Asian Games bronze winner started slow in round 1 and was then forced to catch up. He did well to impress three of the five judges with his punches in the second and third round of the round of 32 bout.

However, his efforts were not enough to overturn the overall deficit.

On Thursday, Sachin Siwach (57kg) will look to seal his quarterfinal berth against Batuhan Ciftci of Turkey.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Amit Panghal (51kg), Sanjeet (92kg) and Jaismine (women's 57kg) will start their campaign after having received a bye in the opening round. PTI ATK UNG

"Definitely India": Ex-Pakistan Star Backs His Side To Lose T20 WC Clash

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper batter Kamran Akmal backed India to emerge victorious in the clash between two teams at the upcoming T20 World Cup. The two Asian Giants will write a new chapter in their rivalry in the upcoming edition of the marquee event. The tournament will begin on June 1, with the USA and the West Indies serving as the hosts. On June 9, India and Pakistan will step into New York's Nassau County Cricket Stadium to play the highly anticipated clash in front of 35,000 fans. During a Q&A session on Instagram, Akmal was asked about his prediction for the star-studded clash, to which he replied, "Definitely India."

When India and Pakistan appear on the same field at the same time, there is always a different buzz associated with the match, with fans investing their emotions to support their team.

This time, in one of the biggest rivalries in cricket, the atmosphere will certainly be different after India defied the odds to stand victorious in the previous edition of the tournament against the archrivals.

In their previous encounter in 2022, the Men in Green were far ahead in the game. India needed 28 runs off a mere 8 deliveries to walk away with a victory.

Mamata Banerjee Posts Special Message For KKR After IPL 2024 Title Victory

Kolkata Knight Riders claimed their third IPL title after defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday. KKR looked completely in control throughout the match as the Shreyas Iyer-led side registered a comprehensive eight-wicket victory in the IPL 2024 final. After the win, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee took to social media to post a special message. "Kolkata Knight Riders' win has brought about an air of celebration all across Bengal. I would like to personally congratulate the players, the support staff and the franchise for their record breaking performance in this season of the IPL. Wishing for more such enchanting victories in the years to come!," she posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Coming to the match, KKR produced a sensational bowling performance to bundle out SRH for 113 as Andre Russell took three wickets while Vaibhav Arora and Mitchell Starc took two.

Bowling coach Bharat Arun opened up about the performance.

"It has been pretty tough the last two years, we didn't qualify and there has been introspection and we worked on areas which needed to be worked on. [on Rana] He has been outstanding and it's about the bowler understanding what his strengths are and when he does, it comes out beautifully on the ground. Mitch coming into the team boosted the confidence of the other youngsters."

"He has been one of the best bowlers in world cricket and he has been in such situations before, it's about understanding Indian conditions and once he did that, it is magic all over. They have been outstanding, spinners mature with age, both bowling in tandem has worked exceptionally for us. He has brought a totally different dimension to our batting this year and it was Gautam who insisted that Sunny open and what Sunny did was outstanding," Arun said after the match.

Watch: Kavya Maran Can't Hold Back Tears After SRH's Heavy IPL Final Loss

Kolkata Knight Riders finished their impressive IPL 2024 campaign on the perfect note as the Shreyas Iyer-led side comfortably defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final to clinch the title. It was the third IPL title for Kolkata Knight Riders after 2012 and 2014. Andre Russell took three wickets while Vaibhav Arora and Mitchell Starc took two each as KKR bundled out SRH for just 113. In response, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Venkatesh Iyer looked in tremendous form to guide their side to a convincing eight-wicket victory. Following the match, SRH owner Kavya Maran could not control her tears as she waved towards the crowd and the video of her reaction after the match has gone viral on social media.

On the other hand, celebrations erupted in the KKR camp as they clinched a well-deserved victory.

"Really happy, credit goes to Abhishek Nayar, all the credit in the world, the way he's worked for the franchise. Some contributions go unnoticed, I want to make sure they don't. He was the one who built this Indian core. We waited for 10 years, credit to the management and the coaching staff," Venkatesh Iyer said after the match.

This was KKR's first IPL title in a decade and it came under the mentorship of Gautam Gambhir. Incidentally, they won their last two titles with Gambhir serving as their captain.

"When GG bhai was appointed as the mentor I had messaged him and said I am very happy he's coming back to KKR, but he said that he would be happy if we are on that podium lifting the trophy. Today is that day and I will never forget that message," Nitish Rana said when asked about Gambhir's impact.

Rinku Singh also echoed similar sentiments as the KKR players celebrated the victory.

"Outstanding feeling right now. Dream has come true - I have been here for 7 years and we are so happy. Credit to GG sir. I will finally lift the IPL trophy. It was God's plan," he said.

DRS Glitch Hits IPL 2024 Final As KKR Star Fumes Over Controversial Dismissal

Kolkata Knight Riders claimed the IPL 2024 title with a comprehensive victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday but the summit clash was not without controversy. KKR opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz was left fuming following a controversial LBW decision that prevented him from scoring a half-century. During the 9th over of the KKR innings, Gurbaz went for a sweep shot against Shahbaz Ahmed but the ball turned a bit and hits his pads. The on-field umpire raised his finger but Gurbaz quickly took a review and the batter looked extremely confident that he was not-out.

The third umpire checked for an inside edge but did not find anything conclusive and Ravi Shastri said on commentary that ball-tracking and UltraEdge are not working. The third umpire ultimately ruled in SRH's favour leaving Gurbaz visibly upset.

KKR rode a flamboyant half-century from Venkatesh Iyer following an impressive bowling show from Andre Russell, Mitchell Starc and Harshit Rana to defeat SRH by 8 wickets in the IPL 2024 final.

Having lost the toss, KKR produced a clinical effort with the ball to dismiss SRH for 113, the lowest ever total in an IPL title clash.

KKR chased down the target of 114 with as many as 57 balls to spare. Venkatesh Iyer remained not out on 52 off 26 balls.

Mitchell Starc (2/14), Andre Russell (3/19) and Harshit Rana (2/24) were the most successful bowlers for the Knight Riders, as SRH simply failed to turn up for the big game.

Opting to bat first, SRH were off to a disastrous start as they lost their top guns Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head with just six runs on the board, with the latter getting dismissed for a first-ball duck to a beautiful outswinger.

Before that, Abhishek was bowled by Mitchell Starc on the fifth ball of the first over, a peach of a delivery opening up the left-hander before hitting the top of the off stump.

SRH were in all sorts of trouble as Starc accounted for the wicket of Rahul Tripathi to leave them reeling at 21/3 in the fifth over, the swing doing the trick for KKR bowlers early on.

First-change bowler Harshit Rana continued the good work and got rid of Nitish Reddy (13). Andre Russell dismissed Aiden Markram in his first over as SRH slipped to 62/5 in the 11th over.

The Alito Family’s ‘Appeal to Heaven’

By Jamelle Bouie from NYT Opinion https://ift.tt/Nx5eEbL

Rafael Nadal Won't '100 Per Cent Close Door' On 'Magical' French Open

Rafael Nadal said Saturday that he is likely appearing at the French Open for the final time but cautioned it was "not 100%" certain, describing the tournament where he has been champion 14 times as a "magical place". "It's a big, big chance that this is going to be my last Roland Garros, but if I have to tell you it's 100% my last Roland Garros, sorry, but I will not, because I cannot predict what's going on. I hope you understand," said the Spaniard.

Nadal, who will celebrate his 38th birthday on June 3, faces world number four Alexander Zverev in the first round in Paris on Monday.

The Spanish legend has racked up 112 wins in 115 matches at the tournament since his title-winning 2005 debut when he was just 19.

He has 22 Grand Slam titles -- second only to Novak Djokovic's 24 on the all-time men's list -- but his career has been plagued by injuries.

Nadal has played just four tournaments since January last year after suffering a hip injury and then a muscle tear.

As a result, his ranking has slumped to 276 in the world and he comes into the French Open unseeded.

"I have been going through a long process of recovery with a very difficult injury, almost two years of suffering, but I feel better now," he added.

"I have fewer limitations than three, four weeks ago, without a doubt."

Nadal had to sit out the 2023 French Open through injury.

The year before he won his 14th title but revealed that he could only play with daily pain-killing injections in his feet.

'Positive legacy'

"In some ways I don't want to close the door 100%. I am enjoying playing tennis. I am travelling with the family. They are enjoying," added Nadal on his reluctance to call time on his career.

"So give me some time. Maybe in one month and a half I say, okay, it's enough, I can't keep going, but today in some way I cannot guarantee that that's going to be the last one. But of course it's a big chance."

Nadal arrives in Paris having yet to make a clay-court quarter-final this season. In Rome, he was defeated in the second round.

"I feel competitive in training. Maybe not in an official match, but when I enter the court, I feel like I can beat anyone," he said.

Nadal holds a 7-3 winning record over Zverev.

Five of those victories came on clay including a semi-final triumph at Roland Garros in 2022 when the German was forced to quit with ankle ligament damage.

In Paris so far this week, Nadal has practised in front of packed courts.

He hit with fellow former champion Stan Wawrinka who described Nadal as "strong as ever".

Fifth-ranked Daniil Medvedev, who trained with him on Thursday, said he was happy not to face him in the first round.

"This place is magical for me. If in the bottom of my heart, I didn't have any hope to have success here and to create a beautiful thing this year, I would not be here in front of you guys," added Nadal.

"So I still have the motivation and a small, at least is a small hope to play well."

And if 2024 turns out to be Nadal's French Open farewell?

"I just can say thanks to all the love I received from all the players, from the organisers, from the tournaments, from all the community of tennis and sport.

"I feel very proud that probably I leave a positive legacy there."

French veteran Gael Monfils, who is also 37 and first played Nadal in 2005, said: "we should enjoy it as much as we can".

"I wonder if we're not going back to traditional tournaments as they were played a long time ago, because the last 20 years are not run-of-the-mill normal years," added Monfils of two decades dominated by Nadal, Novak Djokovic and the now-retired Roger Federer.

Watch: First Batch Of Indian Players Depart For US Ahead Of T20 World Cup

The first batch of Indian cricketers, including skipper Rohit Sharma, on Saturday departed for United States ahead of the T20 World Cup beginning on June 2. Apart from Rohit, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, top-ranked T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav, head coach Rahul Dravid and batting coach Vikram Rathour and few other players left from Mumbai airport. Other players in the travelling contingent include Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel among others.

Few players, including star batter Virat Kohli, who are part of the IPL teams which reached the playoffs, are yet to leave for the T20 showpiece.

While Rajasthan Royals had beaten Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Eliminator on Wednesday, they suffered a loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 2 on Friday night.

SRH will face Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday.

Thus, players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson and Yuzvendra Chahal have not joined the team yet.

The T20 World Cup will be jointly hosted by the USA and the West Indies from June 2 to June 29.

The Indian cricket team will begin its campaign against Ireland on June 5 at the newly constructed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

India will face Pakistan on June 9, followed by matches against co-hosts USA (June 12) and Canada (June 15) in their Group A matches.

India had won the inaugural edition way back in 2007 in South Africa.

After Gavaskar Slams Stars For Leaving IPL, Vaughan Drops 'Pakistan' Logic

The IPL 2024 playoffs started on Tuesday with Qualifier 1 between Kolkata Knight Riders and SunRisers Hyderabad. KKR missed the services of their fiery opener Phil Salt in their clash. Salt hails from England. It's not only KKR, other like Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru will be missing some England players in the playoff stage. The reason for that is that England players have left India to join the national side before the 2024 T20 World Cup.

The decision was slammed by former India cricketers Sunil Gavaakar and Irfan Pathan. Now, former England captain Michael Vaughan defended the decision.

"If you are going back to represent your country, which England players have done, I think that's fair enough. They are playing a series against Pakistan. The England players wouldn't have gone back if it wasn't for the Pakistan series," Vaughan said on Cricbuzz.

"The series was on the calendar. With English cricket, the defence of the 50-over World Cup was a poor one by England here in India. So I think, Jos and his team, 5 games against Pakistan, they get together. The actual lead-up to the 50-over World Cup wasn't perfect either. There were a lot of swaps and changes. They have now gone back to 5 matches, get all the squad together, work on a bit of culture, everyone playing their right roles, I think it will give them a better chance."

Punjab Kings' all-rounder Liam Livingstone on Monday returned to England from the ongoing IPL to undergo a knee recuperation ahead of the next month's T20 World Cup. Along with Livingstone, Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals), Will Jacks and Reece Topley (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) also have left the IPL to join England squad ahead of the T20I series against Pakistan, beginning on May 22.

Other player who had left were - Moeen Ali (CSK), Sam Curran, Jonny Bairstow (PBKS).

"Are Umpires Blind?" WC Winner Angry As Karthik Survives Controversial LBW

The RCB vs RR IPL 2024 Eliminator saw a controversial moment as Dinesh Karthik was given not out off a controversial LBW call. The RCB batter was given LBW in the 15th over on the first ball that he faced. Karthik was given LBW off Avesh Khan's bowling. The full and straight delivery, that bent late, hit the pads. After much deliberation, Karthik went for DRS. It showed a big spike on UltraEdge, but it was hard to decipher if it was because the bat was hitting pad or the ball. The ball was close to the bat as well. RR players Avesh Khan and Riyan Parag looked shocked as Karthik was given not out. RR Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara fumed and went to talk to the umpires.

Almost all experts said that Karthik was out. "That decision in the live cricket match was absolutely terrible! Seriously, what was that all about?. It was so obvious that he was out! The qualification of the third umpire is seriously in question here. Are they blind or they have no knowledge about cricket at all?infuriating!" Sreesanth, member of India's 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup-winning teams, wrote on X.

Sunil Gavaskar had a clear verdict on air when the replay was being played. "The bat hit the pads and not the ball. If you've edged, you go straight up. You don't walk to the other end to confirm," he said.

"I don't think the umpire got it right," Kevin Pietersen said.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru scored 172/8 against Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League Eliminator on Wednesday. Sent into bat, Rajat Patidar top-scored for RCB with 34 off 22 balls.

In-form opener Virat Kohli made 33 off 24 balls before falling to wily leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, while Mahipal Lomror chipped in with a brisk 17-ball 32.

Senior India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin bowled beautifully to finish with excellent figures of 2/19 in four overs while taking the wickets of Cameron Green and Glenn Maxwell off successive balls. Avesh Khan took 3/44 in his four overs.

Brief scores: Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 172/8 in 20 overs (Rajat Patidar 34; Ravichandran Ashwin 2/19, Avesh Khan 3/44).

India To Lose Asian Games Medal After Boxer Parveen Hooda's Suspension

India is set to lose a Hangzhou Asian Games medal after bronze medallist boxer Parveen Hooda was suspended for 22 months for whereabouts failure. Parveen had won the bronze medal in the women's 57kg weight class at the Asian Games last year, which had also fetched her a Paris Olympic quota. However, she was handed a suspension by the International Testing Agency (ITA), the agency responsible for results management, earlier this month after she failed thrice to file her whereabouts within a twelve-month period.

"The ITA confirms that boxer Parveen Hooda has been suspended for a 22-month period, effective until 16 July 2025, after committing three whereabouts failures within a twelve-month period as defined in article 2.4 of the International Boxing Association anti-doping rules (IBA ADR)1," an ITA statement said.

“In addition to the period of ineligibility, the athlete's results obtained between December 11, 2022 until May 17, 2024 are disqualified,” the statement added.

The 2022 Asian Games were delayed by a year due to COVID-19 in China and were held between September 23 to October 8 2023, which falls within the stipulated time period dictated by the ITA and thus Parveen will be stripped off the bronze medal she won.

This development means that India's overall medal count at the 2023 Asian Games will decrease from 107 to 106. However, it will not impact the country's fourth-place standing in the overall medal rankings.

In an unprecedented embarrassment for Indian boxing, the country was forced to surrender the women's 57kg category Olympic quota. Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Jaismine Lamboria will fight for 57kg quota in the final Olympic qualifier, starting in Bangkok on Friday.

In boxing, a quota is awarded to the country and not to the athlete.

"Bengal'll Be Divided For 2nd Time": Gambhir Recalls Facing Ganguly At Eden

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir, who is currently leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as a mentor in the ongoing current Indian Premier League season, recently revealed heartfelt recollections of his time spent with the team and recalled a special occasion where the steadfast support he received from the Kolkata fans while facing Bengal's son Sourav Ganguly, who was leading Pune Warriors.

In a conversation with Ravichandran Ashwin on his YouTube channel, the former World Cup winner took a trip down memory lane as KKR's winning season continued, thinking back on his 2011 arrival at the team and his journey from a cricket player from Delhi to a beloved figure in Kolkata.

Between the highs and lows, Gambhir described a crucial match at Eden Gardens against Pune Warriors. During the game, the stadium was a picture of conflicting allegiances, with KKR's distinctive purple and Pune's light blue. Ganguly a Kolkata native was leading Pune, and Gambhir was leading KKR.

"A lot of people told me there will be a lot of backlashes because you are replacing someone like Sourav Ganguly. I still remember my first day in Kolkata the amount of love I received was unimaginable. Never thought that I would receive that kind of love because a lot of things were spoken about when Sourav was replaced. But not even once in my seven years of captaincy I was not made to feel that I did not belong to Kolkata and that's my relationship with the people," Gambhir told Ashwin on his YouTube channel.

Amidst the pressure of media attention and high expectations, Gambhir revealed a heartfelt story from the pre-match build-up.

"I have said it not because I was captaining them I have said it from my heart that Kolkata is my home and that's the emotion I carry because I remember this one game. We were playing against Pune Warriors and where I think the entire stadium was divided into Purple and Blue and Sourav was leading Pune Warriors. There was this huge article on the match day where it was written in an article that Bengal would be divided for the second time after partition. It was the headline of the front page in Telegraph," he added.

Gambhir revealed that a hotel employee approached him as he was leaving the team hotel for the game and gave words of consolation and support. Gambhir remembered the staff member's touching message and the KKR mentor found great meaning in these words of support, which strengthened his will to guide his side to victory.

As evidence of the unique relationship that exists between Kolkata and KKR, Gambhir highlighted the significant influence that these kinds of acts of kindness had on his seven-year tenure with the team.

"I remember walking out of the hotel we were staying in the same hotel and there was this guy at the gate he said that when you walk today when you go for the toss just remember the entire Bengal will be only cheering for you because KKR belongs to Kolkata and you will not walk alone today and I carried that thought with me to the toss and not even once in my seven years of captaincy I have never walked alone.

Gambhir found strength in the unwavering support of the Kolkata fans, despite the first doubts. The 42-year-old reflected on the Pune Warriors match, he thanked everyone for their persistent support and acknowledged how crucial it was to their achievement.

"The people of Kolkata have walked with me and that's the strength I got from Kolkata and that's the reason that when I come back to Kolkata it is always about giving back to them," he added.

Meanwhile, Gambhir's KKR will play for a spot in the final when they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Qualifier 1 on Tuesday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Foden Fires Man City To Historic 4th Consecutive Premier League Title

Manchester City won an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title on Sunday as Phil Foden's double inspired a 3-1 victory over West Ham. No side in the history of the English top flight had ever won four successive titles, but City have become accustomed to rewriting the record books under Pep Guardiola. The Catalan coach has masterminded six Premier League wins in the past seven seasons. In four of those years, City have also surpassed 90 points. They were pushed this season to deny Arsenal a first title since 2003/04.

The Gunners celebrated a 0-0 draw at the Etihad last month that kept them one point in front of City with nine games to play.

But the champions were relentless in the run-in, winning  their final nine league games, scoring 33 goals.

Guardiola conceded City had felt the pressure in a nervy 2-0 win at Tottenham in midweek that kept the destiny of the title in their own hands.

In the same scenario two years ago, they needed a remarkable late fightback from 2-0 down to beat Aston Villa 3-2 on the final day.

There was far less drama as West Ham melted under the baking Manchester sun in David Moyes' final game in charge of the Hammers.

Foden was recently crowned the football writers' player of the year for his best-ever goalscoring season and ended any suspense after just 79 seconds.

The England international arrowed a blistering drive into the top corner to ensure there was no nervous wait for the title party to get started.

Foden doubled City's lead inside 20 minutes with another cool left-footed finish from Jeremy Doku's cross for his 27th goal of the season.

City should have been out of sight before half-time as Alphonse Areola denied Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland failed to turn in from point-blank range.

Out of nowhere, there was a twist in the tale of the first half when, from a West Ham corner, Mohammed Kudus' outrageous overhead kick flew high past Stefan Ortega.

Haaland claimed his second Golden Boot in as many seasons in the Premier League despite a day to forget in front of goal.

The Norwegian missed a huge chance to restore the home side's two-goal cushion when he spooned over another inviting Doku cross.

City swiftly restored order at the start of the second period and fittingly it was Rodri, himself a player of the year contender, who delivered the knockout blow to Arsenal's title hopes.

The Spaniard has not been on the losing side for club or country since March 2023.

City's only three Premier League defeats came in the three games the 27-year-old was suspended.

This time Areola should have done better as the Frenchman failed to turn Rodri's tame effort round the post.

City could cruise to the finish line and extend a remarkable 35-game unbeaten streak in all competitions from open play.

The only blip on that run was a penalty shootout defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals that  denied Guardiola's men the chance of back-to-back trebles.

They can make it double next weekend when Manchester United have the unenviable task of stopping their local rivals in the FA Cup final.

By achieving a degree of league dominance never seen before, City have made their case to be considered the greatest side English football has produced.

There was an anti-climactic end as City players had to tell fans to get off the pitch before the full-time whistle.

Thousands of supporters  poured onto the field at the end despite pleas from the club to stay off the playing surface.

Max Verstappen Matches Ayrton Senna Pole Record At Imola

Max Verstappen secured his eighth consecutive pole position in qualifying for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola on Saturday to equal the record of Ayrton Senna. The Red Bull three-time world champion's dominance in qualifying drew him level with Senna's run of eight poles, poignantly three decades after the late great Brazilian's tragic death at the Italian circuit in 1994. "It's a great start to the year but also very special 30 years since he passed away at this track," said Verstappen.

"Of course, very pleased to get pole here and in a way it's a nice memory to him (Senna), he was an incredible Formula 1 driver especially in qualifying laps as well, so a great day for me and a great day for the team, I'm very very happy."

Oscar Piastri's McLaren will start alongside the unstoppable Dutchman on Sunday after posting the second fastest time 0.074 seconds behind in a tight qualifying session.

The Australian's teammate Lando Norris, winner last time out in Miami, posted the third best time to fill the second row alongside the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.

Carlos Sainz in the other Ferrari will set off on the third row with the Mercedes of George Russell for company.

Yuki Tsunoda's RB, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), Daniel Ricciardo (RB), and Nico Hulkenberg (Haas) rounded out the top 10.

The glaring absentee from the first five rows was the Red Bull of Sergio Perez, who went out in the second qualifying session, the Mexican muttering "what a mess" on the team radio.

'Tiny margins'

Piastri in contrast was thrilled to get so close to taking pole. "My lap was a bit scruff in the final corner, but it is so difficult to do a perfect lap at this circuit but I'm very happy."

Norris, who claimed his maiden victory two weeks ago, said: "P3 is not a bad job and both of us are within a tenth of P1, so it is all about tiny margins. We've had a good day and a good weekend so far."

After a chaotic third practice on a beautiful sunlit day at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari Verstappen was swiftly on the pace and went top after eight minutes in 1:16.013 only to be outpaced within a minute by Piastri and then Norris, the McLarens endorsing their practice speed.

Fernando Alonso's difficult day continued when his Aston Martin went off at the exit of Tamburello, taking a dive through the gravel, but avoiding any contact with the barriers. He pitted, accepting he could not improve on 20th and last on the grid.

Hulkenberg then went top for Haas before Verstappen outpaced him along with Leclerc as Q1 ended with Valtteri Bottas of Sauber, Logan Sargeant of Williams Zhou Guanyu of Sauber and Kevin Magnussen, in the second Haas, exiting with Alonso.

Hamilton was out early to top Q2 ahead of Russell before the Red Bulls finally found their pace, Verstappen going top in 1:15.386, despite running wide at Rivazza, with Perez second. All were running on softs.

Leclerc then took the initiative with Tsunoda slotting into second place, all proof that Red Bull were not having it their own way – and the top seven all within half a second of the pace.

On their second runs, Verstappen improved to take top spot, but team-mate Perez missed out on the top-ten shootout and was eliminated in 11th along with Esteban Ocon of Alpine, Lance Stroll of Aston Martin, Alex Albon of Williams and Pierre Gasly, sporting a Senna-yellow helmet, in the second Alpine.

Hulkenberg was first out for Q3, as the temperature fell, with Verstappen revelling in the cooler conditions. He clocked 1:14.869 to go top with Norris second on his first timed run ahead of Leclerc, Piastri and Sainz.

The top four were separated by four-tenths of a second for the final runs which saw Verstappen, digging into his reserves of talent, grab pole with a dazzling lap in 1:14.746 – a clear example of an outstanding driver delivering beyond the potential of his car.

Anushka's Reaction As Kohli Misses 50 In Do-Or-Die RCB vs CSK Game Viral

RCB batters came out with great intent in a do-or-die clash against CSK in the IPL 2024 on Saturday. It's a do-or-die match for both teams to grab a playoff spot.  More so for RCB who have to beat CSK by 18 runs in order to qualify for the top-four. Starting with the opening dup of Virat Kohli and Faf Du Plessis, along with Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green, everyone contributed as RCB posted a huge target for CSK. While RCB skipper De Plessis scored a half-century, Kohli missed the mark by just three runs.

He was caught on the boundary ropes by Daryl Mitchell off Mitchell Santner. Mitchell had a tricky situation as he lost balance but was aware of the ropes to take a clean catch. Even Virat Kohli's wife and actor Anushka Sharma thought that Mitchell had gone past the rope. But then soon realised that Kohli was out. Her reaction went viral.

Ahead of the all-important clash with Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League 2024, star India batter and Royal Challengers Bengaluru's opener Virat Kohli revealed the reason behind his high strike rate in the ongoing season of the cash-rich league.

The Impact Player Rule allows a franchise to introduce a 12th player to the team from a five-player list which is given at the time of a toss. A team can bring in an impact player for the playing XI by replacing any player from the five-player list.

"I am telling you, with one extra batter there is a reason I am playing with 200 plus strike rate in the powerplays. I know there is a batsman waiting at No. 8 as well. I think it has disrupted the balance and a lot of people are feeling this way not just me," Kohli said while speaking on Jio Cinema.

Earlier, Rohit also shared his views and said that due to the Impact Player Rule, players like Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar are not getting a chance to bowl, which is not a good thing for Team India.

"I genuinely feel it is going to hold back the development of all-rounders because eventually cricket is played by 11 players, not 12. So I am not a big fan of the Impact Player Rule because you are taking so much from the game just to make it a little more entertaining for the people around you. But just in the cricketing aspect of it, I feel guys like Washington Sundar, and Shivam Dube are not getting to bowl, which is not a good thing for us (India). I am not sure what you can do about it, but I am not a fan of it," said Rohit in the Club Prairie Fire podcast.

RCB vs CSK: Ex-Cricketer Backs Star Who Makes 'Less Mistakes'. Not Kohli

Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has backed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to come out on top in their crunch IPL 2024 clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Sunday. RCB and CSK face off in Bengaluru with a place in the IPL 2024 playoffs on the line. According to Kaif, CSK are team for the big occasions, highlighting the IPL final last year when they beat Gujarat Titans after Ravindra Jadeja hit boundaries on the last two balls.

Kaif suggested CSK tend to do well in do-or-die matches, and former captain MS Dhoni's presence will be a boost for the team.

"CSK are a team for big matches and they know how to win, know how to win knock-out matches. The last time they won the IPL in 2023, they were losing the final - 2 balls, 10 runs. It was almost over and [Ravindra] Jadeja hit four and six to win the match. Dhoni himself is in form this time with the bat, and whoever bats with him usually plays a matchwinning knock, especially in a do-or-die game," Kaif said on Star Sports.

Kaif highlighted how Dhoni makes very few mistakes and his ability to read the game will help CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad in the crunch game against RCB.

"Dhoni's formula in crunch games is - don't panic, take a breath and only he has this art in crunch matches. Lots of IPL captains came, but Dhoni's alertness in the crucial moment of the game is unmatched. He makes very few mistakes, and that's why they are a champion team [Dhoni galtiyan kam karte hai isliye CSK champion team hai]. Because of this, CSK are favourites against RCB in the crucial league match," he added.

Historically, CSK have done well against RCB, winning 22 of their 33 matches. The defending champions had also won the reverse fixture back on the opening day of IPL 2024 in Chennai.

Impact Player Rule Has Affected Bowlers More Than All-Rounders: Shahbaz

Contrary to popular opinion, the much debated 'Impact Player' rule has proved to be a bigger nightmare for bowlers compared to the all-rounders, Sunrisers Hyderabad's left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed said on Friday. Shahbaz has played 12 games this season, scoring 186 runs at a strike-rate of 138 plus but his primary skill which is believed to be left-arm spin hasn't provided rich dividends with only three wickets coming his way, that too at a below-par economy rate of 10.60.

"Now every team has in total 9 batters, an all-rounder and eight batters. Also the teams look for players, who can strike big from ball one and carry on the momentum till the end. The 'Impact Player' rule has affected bowlers more than all-rounders because this gives batters the cushion to play freely," Shahbaz told PTI videos.

According to Shahbaz, the teams didn't really understand how to use an 'Impact Player' during the inaugural season and as every team got a hang of it, even anchors during batting innings is starting to become obsolete.

"The teams didn't know much about how to use it (Impact Player) last season. The all-rounders have a reduced role, which means they are getting lesser chance to bowl unlike earlier times when they used to bowl four overs.

"A lot of all-rounders are facing this. now they get to bowl one or two overs, this is true, this is visible to everyone, but I think, the batters who used to anchor games, has also gone down significantly."

Cummins created pressure-free environment

The Bengal all-rounder was all praise for skipper Pat Cummins, who has been instrumental in keeping the SRH dressing-room stress free which has certainly shown on the on-field performance. SRH have already qualified for the last four stage with 15 points.

"If I talk about myself whenever Pat throws the ball to me, he always backs me. This sort of helps me to soak in pressure well and even if the ball goes to the boundary, he doesn't say anything and keeps motivating all bowlers.

"He and the coach (Daniel Vettori) have created such an environment that no player in the camp ever feels that there's any sort of pressure. The players are playing freely, we enjoy playing under his captaincy and that has what helped us to perform well".

A lesser known fact about Shahbaz is that legendary Virat Kohli gifts him one of his bat every season.

"Virat's bat is by far the best in terms of quality. His bat has the right balance and the ping is fabulous. In every IPL season, he has gifted me a willow. His bat really holds high value for me."

CSK Bowling Coach's "Next Season" Remark For RCB Ahead Of Crucial IPL Game

Chennai Super Kings bowling coach Dwayne Bravo has bowling plans in place for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their winner-takes-it-all final league encounter, and if Virat Kohli and company fail to counter, they are welcome to try "next season". Bravo, one of the key members in four of the five trophies won by CSK with his skills as the world's most effective death bowler in T20s, he is helping the Tushar Deshpandes and Simarjeet Singhs implement his plans to the 'T'.

"You should respect the opposition and RCB rightly so, we respect them. We prepare well as a bowling group, we have very good plans. RCB will have to try to beat us off our plans. And if they do that, well played to them. But if they don't, then... next season for them," the cocky Bravo said at pre-match press conference.

Bravo is happy in the manner the bowling group has performed despite losing senior pro Deepak Chahar for a better part of the season.

"I don't want to give our plans away but at the same time, I think last season and this season have been very good with a fairly youngish bowling group.

"Death bowling in T20 cricket is very important and most times it defines the result and outcome of the game." The inclement weather in Bengaluru could well lead to a washout and, in that case, CSK (15 points in 14 games) will pip RCB (13 in 14 games) to ensure a top-four spot, although they would have to play the Eliminator in Ahmedabad.

"We don't have control over the weather. We don't try to bring up things that we don't have control over. It's another game for us to push for a playoff spot and we're really looking ahead to the challenge against a very good team," Bravo said.

IPL Playoffs Scenario: How SRH vs GT Washout Impacts RCB, CSK, LSG, DC

IPL 2024 Playoffs Scenario: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Thursday got its third play-off-qualified team in SunRisers Hyderabad. The Pat Cummins-led side reached 15 points in 13 games after its match against Gujarat Titans got washed out due to rain in Hyderabad. It ensured that SRH will be among the top-four sides along with Kolkata Knight Riders (19 points in 13 matches) and Rajasthan Royals (16 points in 13 matches). SRH still have a game left against PBKS on Sunday.

With three spots already sealed, the fight is among three teams for the final playoff spot -  Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Lucknow Super Giants. Out of the three, the real fight is between CSK and RCB. LSG have only mathematical chance of advancing in all practical sense.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Here's the full details of the scenario for the four teams after SRH pocketed the third playoff spot.

Chennai Super Kings (14 points in 13 matches, NRR +0.528)

Matches remaining - 1 (vs RCB)

The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led team is best-placed to grab the fourth playoff spot. A win against RCB on Saturday will see them through. If RR and SRH lose their last matches against KKR and Punjab Kings respectively, CSK can dream of a top-two finish too, provided they have better Net Run-rate.

They can also advance even if they lose to RCB. For that, the side must ensure that the losing margin is not big. That will see their NRR remain better than RCB and hence finish above the rivals in the final points table.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (12 points in 13 matches, NRR +0.387)

Matches remaining - 1 (vs CSK)

The Faf du Plessis-led side has to win the last game to have a shot for the last playoff spot. And not just win, they have to triumph by a handsome margin to ensure their run-rate remains above CSK.

Lucknow Super Giants (12 points in 13 matches, NRR -0.787)

Matches remaining - 1 (vs MI)

The KL Rahul-led team is facing an improbable scenario. The only way they can qualify is to hope they win their last match by a very humongous margin. Then, RCB beat CSK but not by a big margin. That might see their NRR get better that RCB and CSK. However, the scenario looks almost impossible.

Delhi Capitals (14 points in 14 matches, -0.377)

Matches remaining - 0

The side is out of the playoff race as it has no more matches left. They don't have any other matches left to improve it.

Watch: KL Rahul Takes Stunner. Sanjiv Goenka's Reaction Can't Be Missed

KL Rahul took a stunning catch to dismiss Shai Hope during the IPL 2024 match between Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals on Tuesday. During the 9th over of the DC innings, Hope slammed a delivery from Ravi Bishnoi straight to Rahul at cover but the LSG captain was taken by surprise. He spilled the catch for a moment before pulling off a dive and complete it before the ball hit the ground. The catch left the commentators and fans stunned as the stadium erupted and LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka was pictured giving Rahul a standing ovation following the impressive catch.

Coming to the match, Ishant Sharma took three wickets after brilliant half-centuries from Tristan Stubbs and Abishek Porel as DC registered a crucial 19-run victory over LSG.

"I feel the wicket remained the same throughout the 40 overs. When we got JFM out in the first over we should have capitalized, but they - Hope and Porel - showed a lot of intent. We did well at the back end and 200 was a par total, we should have chased it down. This has been a problem right through the season - we keep losing a lot of wickets in the powerplay, we never get a solid start to get the likes of Stoinis and Pooran in, that is the big reason why we are in this position." Rahul said after the match.

DC captain Rishabh Pant also opened up about his team's chances of reaching the IPL playoffs.

"Definitely Pooran was giving us a hard time. We had certain plans. The total was good enough. We kept on bowling good balls. I would say the start of the season was with a lot of hopes. Some injuries. We are still in contention even after the last game. We had a better chance of qualifying if I would have had a chance to play in the last game. Personally, it was fantastic to come back. Was heartening to see the support from entire India. Was a long time to wait after one-and-a-half years. I want to be on the field all the time. Don't want to miss any action," he said at the post-match presentation.

IPL 2024 Playoffs Scenarios: How DC's Win vs LSG Impacts RCB, CSK And SRH

IPL 2024 Playoffs Scenario and Updated Points Table: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 playoffs race is intensifying by the day. Delhi Capitals' win over Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday means that five teams are still fighting amongst themselves for two play-off spots in the IPL 2024. So far, Kolkata Knight Riders (19 in 13 matches) and second-placed Rajasthan Royals (16 points from 12 matches) are officially through. RR are yet not assured of a top-two finish. However, the most intense fight is among the five other teams for two spots. They are - Chennai Super Kings, SunRisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants.

Delhi Capitals' win over Lucknow Super Giants means that they still in the race for playoffs. It also means that the other three sides have one extra team to fight with for a playoffs spot. However, both DC and LSG have very faint chance of advancing.

Chennai Super Kings - 14 points in 13 matches (NRR +0.528)

Matches remaining - 1 (vs RCB)

The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Chennai Super Kings have a good chance. The have 14 points in 13 matches (NRR +0.528). If they beat RCB, they are through. A loss against RCB in the final league game won't knock the defending champions out either. They would then hope that RCB do not surpass them on NRR. If LSG win their last game (and reach 14), CSK will still be favourites to go through due to a much superior NRR. They would also hope SRH (14 from 12 games) lose both their matches, so that they have it easy.

Sunrisers Hyderabad - 14 points in 12 matches (NRR +0.406)

Matches remaining - 2 (vs GT and PBKS)

Wins in the remaining two matches will guarantee a playoff spot for SRH. Even if they lose one of their matches, they will still go through. If they lose both their game, then it will all come down to net run-rate. If SRH lose both of their remaining matches while LSG and RCB win their last games, the Pat Cummins-led side will have to depend on the NRR to be in the top 4. If CSK beat RCB, and SRH lose both their games, they will hope to keep better run-rate than LSG and DC to grab that last play-off spots.

SRH could still finish above RR if the side win their two fixtures, and the latter drop points.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Royal Challengers Bengaluru - 12 points from 13 games (NRR +0.387)

Matches remaining - 1 (vs CSK)

With a five-match winning streak, RCB have had a massive turnaround. They won only one out of their first seven games but since then it's a different side altogether. For RCB to qualify, they have to beat Chennai Super Kings to reach 14 points. They would then hope that their NRR is above the other sides vying for the fourth spot in the playoffs. They would also hope SRH to lose both their remaining games or LSG don't win their last match by a big margin.

Delhi Capitals - 14 points from 14 matches (NRR -0.377)

Matches remaining - 0

The Delhi Capitals' fate is not in their own hands. They will have to depend on the results of other matches. If DC are to qualify, they would hope that three out of the four teams - SRH, CSK, RCB and LSG - drop points in their last encounters and they lose by big margins. In that scenario, teams with 14 points will depend on NRR to advance.

Lucknow Super Giants - 12 points from 13 games (NRR -0.787)

Matches remaining - 1 (vs MI)

The Super Giants' run-rate is just pathetic. Their 10-wicket loss to SunRisers Hyderabad saw it fall to -0.769. After their loss to DC, it has fallen to -0.787.  The run rate that they possess is the worst among the four teams eyeing the fourth-place spot.

They are all but out of the play-off race. They would first need to win their last match by a very big margin. They would also hope two of CSK, SRH and RCB lose their games by very big margins.

Boost Ahead Of T20 WC: Kohli Shows Uptick In Strike-Rate In IPL 2nd Half

Star Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and India batter Virat Kohli continues to prove his undeniable mettle as a T20 player amid the divisive views by fans, cricket experts and former players, giving Men in Blue a boost ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which will take place in West Indies and USA this year from June 1 onwards. Continuing his fine run with the bat and indicating that he can hit big from ball one if needed, Virat played a solid knock of 27 in just 13 balls against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday.

His knock had a four and three massive sixes and a strike rate of over 207. A huge part of this knock was his back-and-forth with compatriot and pacer Ishant Sharma, someone who has been around Virat since his academy days. Both exchanged jokes, shared laughs and tried to get one-up on each other before a fine delivery by Ishant was nicked by Virat straight into the hands of wicketkeeper Abhishek Porel.

In the ongoing season, Virat is the Orange Cap holder for most runs, making 661 runs at an average of 66.10 and a strike rate of 155.16, with a century and five fifties. His best score is 113*. RCB, who has made a remarkable comeback in the tournament with five successive wins after a horrid win-loss record of 1-6 in the first half, will need Virat to be at his best against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their final league game at Bengaluru on May 18 for a chance at playoffs.

Often being questioned on his strike rate, Virat has swung back at his critics in his signature fashion, ditching boundaries in favour of huge sixes and passing verbal jabs at naysayers during post-inning or match presentations.

In the first six games of the tournament, Virat scored well at a healthy strike rate. He made 319 runs in his first six innings in 225 balls at a strike rate of 141.77. 29 fours and 12 sixes came from Virat's bat, marking a ratio of 5.4 balls per boundary. He was forced to play the anchor and attacker at the same time as other batters around him struggled for form and rhythm. Virat scored a century and two fifties in these six innings.

The switch flipped in Virat's batting when they were tasked with chasing 288 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in their seventh game. Though RCB faced a 25-run loss despite a valiant effort, Virat scored 42 in 20 balls, with six fours and two sixes. His strike rate was 210.00.

Since that SRH game, fans have experienced a different Virat. In these next seven innings, Virat scored 342 runs in just 201 balls, with a strike rate going up to a massive 170.14. 27 fours and 21 sixes have come from his bat in these seven innings starting from that SRH game. The balls per boundary ratio has also come down, with 4.1 balls taken to smash one.

An unnoticed positive of Virat's remarkable run is his six-hitting. He has smashed a total of 33 sixes so far, the second-highest by a batter next to SRH's Abhishek Sharma (35 sixes). Virat has more sixes than Sunil Narine (32), Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen and Riyan Parag (31), Australian sensation Jake Fraser McGurk and Shivam Dube (28), Rajat Patidar (27) and Rishabh Pant (25).

This is the only second time Virat has crossed 30 sixes in a single season of IPL, with his highest peak coming in 2016, when he smashed 38 sixes in 16 games. He has one more league game atleast to add more to his tally.

Since that Sunrisers game, Virat's strike rate against spin, something considered his weakness, has also gone up. In his first six IPL 2024 innings, Virat scored 128 runs in 98 balls against spin, with only four boundaries and seven sixes coming from his bat. He played 28 dot balls against spin and his SR against spin was 130.61.

However, that SRH inning during the chase of 287 runs, sparked a change in his spin game as well. From that knock onwards, Virat has smashed 132 runs in 90 balls against spin, with 11 fours and six sixes coming from his bat. His strike rate also increased to 146.66 against spin and he played 26 dots against the moving ball.

Virat's overall strike rate against spin in this IPL is 138.29, with 260 runs hit in 188 balls against spin. He has smashed 13 sixes against spin and 15 boundaries. He has played 54 dot balls against spinners.

In the past five seasons, Virat's overall SR against spin has been: 113.46, 108.08, 100.00, 108.91 and 130.14. His strike rate against spin was at its best in the 2016 season, where he struck at 152.30 and 2015 season, where he scored his runs at 151.21 against spin bowling.

Following his match-winning knock of 92 in just 47 balls against Punjab Kings recently on May 9, Virat had spoken about being more attacking in his approach, bringing out slog sweeps against spinners after a long-time and the idea of self-improvement.

"For me, it is still quality over quantity (on his runs and numbers). More so now, at this stage of my career, heading into 36. The understanding of my game over so many years allows me to practice less, and still stay mentally switched on. And some added challenges in terms of improving your own game. Certain aspects of the game, you want to get better at. It's an ever-evolving process. I am not a guy who wants to sit around saying 'this is the way I play' and not improve on the things I need to," said Kohli.

Kohli further explained about his slog-sweep shot against the spinners.

"I brought out the slog-sweep to the spinners. It was me mentally putting myself in that situation. I did not practice that at all. I know I can hit it because I have played that shot a lot in the past. So I just felt like I needed to take a bit more risk and for me, that shot was something that I used to hit regularly back in the days. That shot is now allowing me to hit off the backfoot as well. I am always looking to expose that side of the field against the spin. It's been a massive factor for me in the IPL," the right-hand batter added.

"It just takes a bit more conviction and put out that thought that props up 'what if I get out?'. I have been managing to stay ahead of that thought. And that has allowed me to keep my strike rate up in the middle overs and scoring for my team as well," the Delhi-born player concluded.

This refreshed approach of Virat in T20 cricket, especially against spinners, could just be what India needs on slow surfaces of the Caribbean and it would be interesting if Virat would carry forward his form to the World Cup.

IPL 2024 Points Table: How Can RCB Reach Playoffs After Crucial Win vs DC

Royal Challengers Bengaluru registered their fifth consecutive victory to keep their IPL 2024 playoff dreams alive as the Faf Du Plessis-led side defeated Delhi Capitals by 47 runs on Sunday. The win means that RCB now have 12 points from 13 matches and their final league match against Chennai Super Kings can decide the fate for both teams. RCB will reach 14 points if they can beat CSK and that will put them in a good position to end up in the Top 4. CSK earlier defeated Rajasthan Royals and as a result, RCB will have to win by a good margin in order to end up with a superior Net Run Rate (NRR).

Lucknow Super Giants are also in the race for the playoffs and they need to lose one of their remaining two matches for RCB to qualify. DC and Gujarat Titans can also reach the 14-point mark but considering their disappointing NRRs, it seems unlikely that they will be able to qualify for the next stage.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru bowled and fielded brilliantly to beat Delhi Capitals by 47 runs.

Having managed only 187 for 9 after a blazing half-century by in-form Rajat Patidar, RCB bowled out lackluster DC for 140 in 19.1 overs. Patidar (52 off 32 balls) and Will Jacks (41 off 28 balls) added 88 for the third wicket in little under nine overs.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

But Yash Dayal (3/20) and Cameron Green (1/19) were brilliant with their lengths as none of the Delhi batters save stand-in skipper Axar Patel (57 off 39 balls) made a mark.

DC stand-in skipper Axar Patel decoded the factor that led to their defeat.

"Dropped catches hurt us. Could've restricted them to 150. When you lose four wickets in powerplay, you're always chasing the game. 160-170 would've been a par score. Pitch was two-paced. Some were skidding, some were holding. When your main players are run out and you lose four in powerplay, you're chasing the game. Anything can happen, but haven't thought that far ahead," he said after the match.

Sanju Samson's Act Minutes After T20 World Cup Selection Wins Hearts

April 8, 2008. Sanju Samson, then a skinny 14-year-old, curled on the bed in his hotel room, watched Kolkata Knight Riders' Brendon McCullum hammering a 73-ball 158 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the first-ever IPL match. That drizzly evening in Kottayam, a town in central Kerala, changed his heart. Forever. Sanju reshuffled his career dream, from wanting to become a civil servant to entering the elite world of a top-flight cricketer. "Sanju always recollects that day, which gave him the dream of reaching that league of top players one day," said former Kerala player Raiphi Vincent Gomez, also a close friend of the wicketkeeper batter.

But merely having a dream will not take anyone to the top of their profession, more so in sports.

Sanju then had oodles of determination too to walk down his chosen path.

Biju George, the former India women's cricket team's fielding coach and the early mentor of the Kerala player, saw that brightly flickering flame inside Sanju.

"Rain or sunshine Sanju and his brother Saly will be at nets at the Medical College ground in Thiruvananthapuram. It was raining heavily one day here, and I thought Sanju would not come for nets from his home at Vizhinjam, nearly 25 kilometres from the centre.

"But he was there on time. He carried his (cricket) kit in which he also stuffed his school uniform, so that he could go to school after training. Even at that age, he had next level resolve," said George.

Perhaps, that discipline came from his family. Viswanath, his father, was a football player with Delhi Police for nearly two decades and firmly supported his son's aspirations.

He would arrange nets for Sanju and his brother with the Delhi Police team, and they often played against cricketers much older than them.

"His father is a great source of inspiration for him, even when I first met him during his junior cricket days. He would come to watch Sanju's matches without fail," said Gomez.

But that upbringing in a police colony at GTB Nagar in North Delhi also gave Sanju a grounded mind.

Make no mistake, Sanju is every inch a modern-day sportsperson – he is active on social media spaces, has close rapport with Malayalam film stars and politicians and lends his face to market a number of products.

However, the effect of fame has not seeped inside his skin, a trait George said has made him endearing to all layers of Kerala's discerning society.

"Malayalees have this inherent nature, they don't like people who show off – whether it is their knowledge or wealth or fame. Sanju till this day has remained humble and that connects him instantly with the people of the state," he said.

A glance at Sanju's X account will validate that remark. A globe-trotting sportsperson, Sanju's location reads 'Keralam' and a silhouetted Vizhinjam port is the profile picture.

"See, Kerala has produced some top-class athletes – PT Usha, Sreesanth etc. Listen, I am not pointing fingers at them, but, at times, Malayalees do not like the way in which they carry themselves in public, the tone of their talk etc.

"But Sanju is different. He still has the same set of friends – Nicholas, who is now his manager, or Rahul Raghav – from his early days. He still visits the local shops in his shorts and chappals.

"He does not have the air of a star. He is that person who everyone loves to have at their house as a son or a brother. You know he retained that 'Nammude Sanju' (our Sanju) image," he elaborated.

Perhaps, only footballer IM Vijayan has had that effect on fans in the state.

"Vijayan was a superstar in his playing days but remained rooted to his home town -- Thrissur. Sanju is so rooted to Thiruvananthapuram and Kerala despite climbing the ranks. The state loves its heroes to remain local and Sanju is a perfect fit," said Rajesh R Nair, a marketing-advertising professional.

'The big brother'

Sanju might have grown into an affable cult hero in the socio-cultural sphere of Kerala but for his teammates, the 29-year-old is a brotherly figure.

"Sanju chettan (elder brother) is always approachable. Many times, he will be away with national duty or some IPL commitments, but he is a phone call away.

"If he is not playing a match, he will call one of us later to know the details. He never misses the team's schedule," said Rohan Kunnummel, the Kerala opener.

George underscored that passion Sanju has for state cricket.

"We spoke a few minutes after his selection to the T20 World Cup. But he was more interested in talking about the need for Kerala to win at least one trophy in the upcoming domestic season.

"He was saying that more children will take up cricket in the state if the team gets some success at the national level," he said.

But several youngsters might already have decided to follow Sanju, just like he did in that hotel room 16 years ago.

IPL 2024: How Hardik Pandya's MI Got Knocked Out By SRH's Win Over LSG

The Mumbai Indians have now become the first team to get knocked out of the IPL 2024. And it happened without the side even playing their next match. SunRisers Hyderabad defeated Lucknow Super Giants on Wednesday to knock out the five-time champions. Here's the complete details of how the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians got knocked out on Wednesday. (IPL 2024 Points Table)

Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals have already 16 points each, as they sit on top of the IPL 2024 points table. SRH beat LSG by 10 wickets on Wednesday, and the Pat Cummins-led side went up to to 14 points. This means that Mumbai Indians will not be able to overtake any of these three teams as the Hardik Pandya-led side has only 8 points after playing 12 games. They have two more matches left and the best they could get to is 12 points overall.

Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants, who both have 12 points, face each other in the 64th match of IPL 2024 next week. This means one of the two teams is going to finish over 12, which again goes over the maximum points MI could get to.

Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya recently said that he wasn't getting carried away as far as MI's playoffs chances are concerned. "I don't know which mathematical situation we're talking about, but at the same time, you want to focus on playing good cricket," Hardik said in a post-match presentation, replying to Manjrekar's suggestion.

"The way our batters batted, that was excellent. My bowling, I like to bowl in the right areas, I bowl according to the situation. Bowled in the right areas today and it worked. I was like Chawla had to bowl from the shorter side. He (Chawla) had to be accurate, the margin of errors have become smaller these days for the bowlers.

"It's unbelievable, the best past of SKY is that he puts the bowlers under pressure. It's sheer confidence, his game has changed, is one of the best batters. He can change a game in a different way, lucky to have him (SKY) in our side," Hardik further said in the presentation ceremony.

Best Catch Of IPL 2024? KKR Star's Stunning Effort Leaves Fans Awestruck

Ramandeep Singh pulled of a sensational catch that many fans and experts hailed as the "best catch of IPL 2024" during the match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday. During the second over of the LSG innings, young opener Arshin Kulkarni top-edged a swinging delivery from Mitchell Starc and the ball went high up in the night sky. Ramandeep was nowhere close to the ball but he sprinted a huge distance before pulling a full body dive to complete the catch.

The effort left even the commentators awestruck as former Indian cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri screamed -  "That's up in the air, difficult chance...ohhhhh! What a catch! Is that the best catch of the IPL?". Former India star Deep Dasgupta agreed with him and responded with an "Oh my God".

Coming to the match, Sunil Narine top-scored for KKR once again with 81 while Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy took three wickets each to guide the visitors to a huge win over LSG.

"Lot of runs. Poor performance overall. It was a big total. Like I said, It's a poor performance with both bat and ball. Narine in powerplay puts a lot of pressure. Our bowlers couldn't handle this pressure. That's how the IPL is. You will come against good players and that when you will be tested."

"Wicket is very good. There is a bit of bounce if you bowl hard length. It wasn't a bad pitch. 235 was 20-30 runs were above par. Our batting was poor. We prepare in advance, we talk about the opposition batters, trying to see what kind of plans we need to come up with."

"We need to execute it when we come here, but we didn't we make a couple of mistakes against Sunil and anyone who strikes well. Once we go back to dressing room, we move on from this game and see where we went wrong. Last home game, we are on the road for the next few games, we need to be little bit more fearless," LSG captain KL Rahul said after the match.
