Shami's Absence Won't Increase Bumrah's Workload: Irfan Pathan

Jasprit Bumrah's workload might have increased in Mohammed Shami's absence but India's pace spearhead is in a much better shape right now in terms of fitness to handle the rigours of Test cricket, feels former all-rounder Irfan Pathan. Bumrah, who had a lower back stress fracture in 2022, underwent a surgery in New Zealand and was out of competitive cricket for a period of 11 months. He returned during Ireland T20I series in August last year and has remained injury free since then. But the absence of Shami, who is out with a left ankle injury since his stellar performance in last year's ODI World Cup, has definitely put extra pressure on Bumrah, who is leading India's attack against England in the ongoing five-match Test series. "Obviously, Shami's absence does have an effect but that does not mean chances of injury will increase for Bumrah. His action is absolutely perfect now," Pathan told PTI TV.

Since his return Bumrah has increased his run-up by a step and also a bigger follow through which puts less load on the back because of his slinging action.

Pathan said there is definitely extra pressure on Bumrah in Shami's absence as the duo share a healthy bowling partnership.

"When there is pressure from both sides, whether it is Shami taking wickets from one side or Bumrah working quietly from one side...

"Bumrah is taking wickets and Shami is working quietly, their partnership not only reduces the pressure on each other but also augurs well for the team," the cricketer-turned-commentator said.

Pathan is in awe of Bumrah's dedication and attitude towards the traditional format of the game.

"I have been a big fan of Jasprit Bumrah's attitude, especially in Test cricket, the way he has given priority to Test cricket despite injuries," he said.

"Even if he gets injured, I will salute him because he is trying his best. We all have to always keep this in mind." Having lost the first Test against England by 28 runs in Hyderabad, India will look to bounce back and level the series when the second match starts in Visakhapatnam on Friday.

"I Couldn't Turn Down": Ben Stokes On Leading England In Tests

England Test skipper Ben Stokes opened up about leading the side in Tests and said that it was an opportunity that he couldn't turn down. After registering a 28-run victory against India in the first Test on the back of Ollie Pope's 196 and a seven-wicket haul from debutant Tom Hartley, England will look to lead the series 2-0 when they take on hosts in the second match on Friday at Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium. In the opening match, the southpaw played a knock of 70 runs in the first innings. The all-rounder asserted that he never aspired to lead the England side in the longest format of the game. He said that this is a role he has enjoyed.

"It's something I never had any aspirations to do or really thought about too much, to be honest. I never really had too much responsibility around captaining or anything, either in age-group cricket or any other level. I had a little taste of it with the Durham Academy. This opportunity presented itself to me and it was something I couldn't turn down. It's a role I've grown into, it's a role that I've really enjoyed," Stokes told JioCinema.

"I love everything that comes with it, the responsibility of looking after people from different types of angles. Whether it be out in the field or away from the field. Understanding different individuals and personalities, because in a team sport, you've got a lot of people and not everyone is the same. That's helped me mature as a person. Just really enjoying the responsibility of driving something forward," the left-hand batter added.

He also talked about the 'Bazball' approach which the team has adopted after the arrival of former New Zealand skipper, Brendon McCullum as the head coach of the national team in Tests. He said that the phrase 'Bazball' is created by the media.

"It's a phrase that was created by the media. Something that we try and stay away from. It just came from what we have managed to do over the last two years and how we've played. We don't necessarily like it, Baz hates it! Whenever that word pops up, we just try to say that's how England plays Test cricket," Stokes concluded.

Recovering Rashid Khan To Miss Afghanistan's First-Ever Sri Lanka Test

Ace spinner Rashid Khan will miss Afghanistan's first-ever Test against Sri Lanka next month, selectors announced Monday, as he continues to recover from a back surgery. The 25-year-old is Afghanistan's highest Test wicket-taker -- with 34 in five matches --  and has been an integral part of the team in all formats of the game.  Selectors said Rashid was being cautiously monitored. "Rashid Khan continues to recover from the back surgery and is set to miss the one-off Test against Sri Lanka," the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) said in a statement. The Test will be played in Colombo from February 2-6.

Another leg-spinning bowling all-rounder, Qais Ahmad, has been included in the squad as Rashid's replacement.

Hashmatullah Shahidi will lead the squad, which also has Noor Ali Zadran and Naveed Zadran.

Afghanistan will also play three one-day internationals and as many Twenty20s on the tour, for which squads will be announced later.

Since being granted Test status in 2018, Afghanistan has played seven Tests, winning three and losing the other four.

"The year 2024 is packed with Test cricket for us, a sign of progression," said ACB chairman Mirwais Ashraf.

Squad: Hashmatullah Shahidi (captain), Rahmat Shah, Ikram Alikhil, Mohammad Ishaq, Ibrahim Zadran, Noor Ali Zadran, Abdul Malik, Bahir Shah, Nasir Jamal, Qais Ahmad, Zahir Khan, Zia-ur-Rehman Akbar, Yamin Ahmadzai, Nijat Masood, Mohammad Saleem Safi, Naveed Zadran.

East Bengal Crowned Champions Of Super Cup With Thrilling Win Over Odisha FC

Kolkata heavyweights East Bengal were on Sunday crowned champions of the Super Cup after emerging 3-2 winner in a thrilling final against Odisha FC with Cleiton Silva scoring the decisive goal in Bhubaneswar. Despite both sides having multiple chances to score, neither could convert as the match ended 2-2 after regulation time and also after the end of the first half of extra-time. Brazilian recruit Cleiton struck the winner for East Bengal in the 111th minute of the match, leaving his team in a state of frenzy and the opponents shocked.

Cleiton capitalised on a mistake from the Odisha FC goalkeeper and came up with a neat finish at a crucial juncture of the match, slotting the ball into the bottom-right corner with a left-footed shot.

Odisha FC tried desperately for an equaliser in the remaining minutes but the East Bengal defence was up to the task, marking their opponents.

East Bengal deserved credit for how they went about their task after they lost Shouvik following a second yellow card of the night.

Odisha, though, also had been playing with 10 men from the 69th minute after Mourtada Fall was given the marching order following his second offence of the night.

The victorious East Bengal team will be nominated to play in the prestigious Asian Champions League 2 preliminary stage of AFC 2023-24 season.

Trailing by a goal, Odisha FC equalised when Jahouh stepped up to take a penalty and converted it from the spot in the 98th minute.

Earlier, a penalty from Saul Crespo helped East Bengal take the lead in the 62nd minute.

In the 52nd minute, an excellent through pass from Mahesh led to a fine goal by Nandhakumar Sekar as East Bengal made it 1-1 in the second half.

This was after This was after Mauricio put Odisha FC in lead with his 39th-minute strike.

Watch: Recovering From Ankle Injury, Pandya Begins Bowling Full Tilt

Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has begun bowling full tilt after rehabilitation from his ankle injury, clearly indicating that he is on course for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League where he will captain Mumbai Indians. Pandya, who sustained an ankle injury during World Cup last year, was seen bowling here in a video footage shared on his Instagram. "I feel good to be back. My journey started 17 years back at this same ground," said Pandya, who was seen sending down a few deliveries while also doing some running drills and exercises.

"I am giving it all I got, every single day." Pandya, who was named Mumbai Indians captain in place of highly-successful Rohit Sharma on December 15 following a high-profile trade from Gujarat Titans, has been out of action after sustaining the injury in November during World Cup clash against Bangladesh.

He missed the home T20I series against Afghanistan earlier this month.

Ex-India Star Now Eager To Play Against Rohit And Co. In T20 WC 2024

India's Under-19 World Cup winning captain Unmukt Chand is all set to play against the senior national men's team in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. The mega event that kicks off on June 1 in United States is set to witness one of the rare moments where a player will be playing against his former national team. Chand, who retired from Indian cricket in 2021, will qualify to play for the United States cricket team in March this year. He said that he is keen to test himself against a team like India.

"Something which would be very strange (laughs), but I think since I've retired from India, my next goal was always to sort of play against India, and not in any bad blood but keen to test myself out against the best team in the world," Chand told Cricbuzz.

Meanwhile, Harmeet Singh and Smit Patel, both of who were also part of the 2012 World Cup where Unkukt led the side to the title, will also be seen playing against India at the world event in June. Both Harmeet and Smit have already qualified to play for USA.

India are set to take on United States in the Group A game of T20 World Cup on June 24. The match

Unmukt Chand is the first Indian player to play in the Big Bash League (BBL). He achieved the feat as he made his debut for the Melbourne Renegades against Hobart Hurricanes in January 2022.

Chand, 28, had called time on his playing career in India last year. He represented three IPL franchises - Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians, and Rajasthan Royals - and had a domestic career spanning more than a decade, including 67 first-class matches.

Chand burst onto the international stage as a teenager in the 2012 ICC U19 World Cup - played in Australia.

He was the player of the match as India won the tournament final, scoring an unbeaten 111 against an Australian side featuring a host of now-BBL stars, including the likes of Travis Head and Ashton Turner.

"There Is Spin But...": Axar's Honest Verdict On Pitch During ENG 1st Test

The best part of Yashasvi Jaiswal's entertaining unbeaten 76 was the manner in which he completely unsettled England's troika of spinners, India's left-arm slow bowler Axar Patel reckoned after opening day's play in the first Test. Riding on Jaiswal's 70-ball blitz, India closed the opening day at 119 for 1 while replying to England's first innings total of 246 all out. "We enjoyed the way Yashasvi was batting and he took on the spinners from the very first over. It was very good to unsettle them early," said Axar in the post-day press conference. Jaiswal hammered debutant England left-arm spinner Tom Hartley for two sixes in the second over of India's first innings to impose himself on the match.

However, Axar himself played a not insignificant role in India's charge on the day, plucking the wickets of Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes.

The 30-year-old said he was just trying to complement senior partners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

"I have learned a lot from seniors Ash and Jaddu bhai. I was trying to control the game from my end as they were bowling in partnership. They were taking wickets, so, I was not thinking about taking wickets," he said.

"I know that if you are playing three spinners then one of them will get a lesser number of overs. They were also telling me what was happening on the wicket and what I should do. It is a privilege to bowl with them," said Axar.

The Gujarat bowler was particularly chuffed about the dismissal of Bairstow after castling him with a gem of a delivery that was bowled from wide of the crease, hitting the stumps with the angle.

"That delivery really came off well. We were talking if it turns from there then it would be great because the odd ball was turning. Bairstow took stance on the fourth wicket to avoid the lbw." "So, I thought of bowling at the stumps because he did cut a few shots close to the stumps. That was the plan and the one that turned from there was good and you would have seen my celebration," he added.

In their attempt to negate Indian spinners, the England batters employed reverse sweeps one too many times and Axar said the attacking mindset of rivals exponentiated his chances to take wickets.

"I was talking with the captain that they were playing sweeps and reverse sweeps and we were looking where the reverse sweeps were going. So, we placed the point (fielder) a bit behind.

"We had talked about this in the team meeting and we had a plan for this. It's good that they wanted to attack and it had a chance of getting them out," he noted.

Axar said the RGI Stadium pitch did not have any alarming turn and it was a good effort from the Indian bowler's part to bowl out England for 246.

He hoped that the batters would play longer on the second day and further cement the team's advantage.

"There is spin but the wicket is slow and we know that we did well to restrict them to 246. We can adjust to it as the ball is getting slow after pitching. Yeah, it is a bit challenging as well for the batters but if you bat well then you can make runs here," he concluded.

"Looks Like...": Dravid Gives Hint On Nature Of Pitch For IND-ENG 1st Test

India are all set to take on England in the five-match Test series at home, starting January 25 in Hyderabad. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already announced the squad for the first two games of the series. While England will aim to repeat the glory of 2012 where they won 2-1 in India, the hosts will eye to maintain their dominance against the Three Lions in Tests at home. Indian cricket team's head coach Rahul Dravid has given a hint on the kind of surface that will be offered for the first Test.

"It's hard to say. We will see once the game starts and figure it out. It looks like a good one from where I have seen it. The pitch may spin a little bit, how quickly and how fast that I don't know," Dravid said in the pre-match press conference.

Rahul Dravid on Tuesday also said that Virat Kohli, who will miss the first two Tests of the England series due to personal reasons, is a "phenomenal player" and other players will have opportunity to step up and put in some good performances in his absence.

Virat Kohli will miss the first two Tests of the five-match series against England due to personal reasons.

India will play against England in the first Test at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. The second Test of the series will be played at Vishakapatnam, the third Test at Rajkot, the fourth Test at Ranchi and the fifth and final Test at Dharamshala.

Dravid said that any team will miss the absence of a player like Kohli.

"Any team will miss a quality player like Virat Kohli, there is no doubt about it. He is a phenomenal player and his records tell everything. He is a huge boost to the side but having said that it gives an opportunity to the other players to step up and put in some good performances," he said.

"We have got some good experience in the squad. We have players like Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja who have played in the team for over a decade in Tests. There are some other great players in the team like Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer but I will not call them youngsters...They have been there with the squad for a time now and they have the opportunity to perform and prove themselves in the five-match series," the former right-hand batter added.

Cummins Breaks Silence On Maxwell's Hospitalisation After Late-Night Party

They "didn't cross paths" but Australia captain Pat Cummins was at the same venue from where his World Cup-winning teammate Glenn Maxwell was rushed to hospital after a reported late-night drinking session and the star pacer responded to the incident by saying "any decision you make you've got to own it". Both Cummins and Maxwell were attending a concert by 'Six and Out', the band which features former pacer Brett Lee, in Adelaide. Cummins said he left the venue much before his teammate allegedly lost consciousness and had to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

"Potentially, I think only 'Maxy' can answer that one," Cummins was quoted as saying by 'The Sydney Morning Herald' when asked whether Maxwell needed to reconsider his choices.

"I was there at the Gov for the concert, but I left pretty early – I knew he was in town but I didn't cross paths with Maxy at all," he said.

The World Cup-winning captain added, "We're all adults and part of being an adult is you make your own decisions.

"In terms of this incident he wasn't on tour with Australia, he was over there for a private event, so he wasn't with the cricket team. So it is a little bit different, but absolutely, any decision you make you've got to own it and be comfortable with it."

Cricket Australia (CA) is already investigating the mishap. Maxwell was out drinking and watching a concert by 'Six and Out', the band featuring former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee, when he felt unwell.

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke also expressed his shock and said the thought of an ambulance made him "nervous".

"To have to be put into an ambulance, that makes me nervous. With these sort of things, with off-field stuff. I like to go, 'Benefit of the doubt and innocent until proven guilty'," Clarke said on 'Foxsports'.

"One thing I know, Cricket Australia will get to the bottom of it. These days there's cameras, there's people, so the truth will be told. The other thing we need to do is making sure he's OK. He didn't end up spending the night there (in hospital).

"I can't think of a time where I've had to call an ambulance or an ambulance had to be called for me, no matter how drunk I was. So I'm worried is there more to this and I just hope he's OK first and foremost."

Maxwell, who last week stepped down as captain of BBL side Melbourne Stars after failing to make the finals, was not named in the 13-man squad to face the West Indies in a three-match ODI series from February 2 and 6.

"It is not related to him being replaced in the ODI squad, a decision that was made following the BBL and based on his individual management plan. Maxwell is expected to return for the T20 series. No further comment will be made at this time," CA had said in a statement.

Last year, Maxwell faced a series of injuries but despite that, he performed admirably in the World Cup.

During the ODI World Cup in India, Maxwell suffered concussion when he fell off a golf cart in Ahmedabad.

In 2022, he broke his leg when he slipped while running at a friend's birthday party and remained out of action for more than three months.

'Ashwin Must Be Proud': Internet Reacts To Non-Striker Run-Out At U19 WC

A runout at non-striker's end stole the show in the New Zealand vs Afghanistan low-scoring thriller at Buffalo Park in East London on Tuesday. It was a Group D match of the ongoing U19 World Cup in South Africa. Afghanistan spinner Naseer Khan Maroofkhil ran out New Zealand's Ewald Schreuder as the latter was short of his crease at the non-striker's end. Before Naseer, a slow left-arm orthodox bowler, could release the delivery out of his hand, Schreuder was out of his crease. Naseer was quick to clip off the bails in time by stopping mid-way during his bowling. Batter Schreuder was visibly unhappy with the dismissal.

Watch it here:

"Ashwin anna must be proud of this kid," read a comment in the video. "This rule against sprit of cricket," read another another comment.

"Nice, early life lesson for them to stay inside the crease," wrote a fan. "Hate this rule," was also among comments.

The wicket came at a crucial juncture in the game as New Zealand went nine down, needing two more runs to win.

The fear of losing the game for New Zeland though did not last long as Naseer Khan hit the winning runs off the very next ball.

New Zealand eventully edged past Afghanistan by one wicket in the game.

Matt Towe registered a five-wicket haul (5 for 21) as the Kiwis bundled out Afghanistan for 91 after getting an invitation to bowl first. Ewald Schreuder (2 for 15) and Ryan Tsourgas (2 for 33) also impressed in bowling.

In reply, New Zealand too got off to a poor start. They lost a total of nine wickets before chasing down the total.

Allah Ghazanfar picked three wickets while Khalil Ahmed and Arab Gul Momand picked two each but all went in vain as the Kiwis ended on the winning side.

"Things Were Done And Dusted...": Ex India Star's Huge Virat 'Fab 4' Take

The upcoming Test series between India and England will see two members of the 'Fab-4' of Test cricket square off against each other. India's Virat Kohli and England's Joe Root have been two of the most consistent batters in the format over the past decade. Australia's Steve Smith and New Zealand captain Kane Williamson are the other two members of the 'Fab-4' of Test cricket. After overcoming a lean patch with the bat, former India opener Aakash Chopra suggested that Kohli is back among his peers.

"Yours truly also said that he is no longer part of the Fab 4. He is now, by the way. It was about the runs at that time, in that period of two years, but he is back again. Steve Smith has fallen away. Kane Williamson is also going 50-50 but this guy is still there. He was there then also and has returned now," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

Despite scoring runs, Kohli failed to score a century in over three years between 2019 and 2022.

Chopra added that Kohli has reignited his career, especially in Test cricket, after a three-year lean patch had raised doubts over his future.

"The way he has made a comeback has made his story even more beautiful. It seemed like things were done and dusted and you came and played a World Cup, and became the Player of the Tournament. You reinvented the wheel once again and reignited that passion," he added.

Kohli has been in sensational form of late. He was the top-scorer in the World Cup last year as India reached the final, only to go down against Australia.

In 11 matches, Kohli amassed 765 runs at an average of 95.62. He also broke Sachin Tendulkar's record of most ODI centuries with his knock in the semi-final against New Zealand.

He has also scored 8,848 runs in 113 Test matches for India at an average of 49.15, while scoring 30 fifties, 29 hundreds and seven double hundreds.

India's squad for first two Tests vs England

Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), KS Bharat (wk), Dhruv Jurel (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Avesh Khan

India Open: Satwiksairaj-Chirag Enters Final With Convincing Victory

Former champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were a step away from their first title of the season, progressing to a second successive final with a victory over Tokyo Olympics bronze medallists Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia at the India Open Super 750 on Saturday. World No. 2 Indians, who had finished runner-up at Malaysia Open Super 1000 last week, showed nerves of steel as they kept a sustained pressure on Aaron and Soh, the 2022 World champions, to eke out a 21-18 21-14 in a thrilling semifinal clash. Satwik broke into a dance as Chirag jumped into his arms as the duo celebrated after they won 11 of the last 12 points in the second game to emerge victories. It was only their third win against the Malaysian combination.

The win ensured the home challenge was alive in the Super 750 tournament after HS Prannoy was completely outplayed by world no. 2 Shi Yu Qi of China 21-15 21-5 win in what turned out to be a lop-sided contest at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall here.

Satwik and Chirag, who had won the 2022 edition, will face third seeded Koreans Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae in the summit clash.

The match was halted at 13-13 in the second game after Chirag's return hit Aaron's eyes during a fierce rally but he seemed okay as play was resumed after some time though the Indians pair completely dominated the proceedings there after.

Earlier, Prannoy, the World No. 9 Indian, matched his rival in the initial phase but after 14-14 in the opening game, he faded into oblivion as Shi Yu Qi registered a 21-15 21-5 win in what turned out to be a lop-sided contest at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall here.

Shi Yu Qi moved with ease across the court and played with patience and precision to outwit Prannoy, who looked sloppy in the second game.

In the opening game, Prannoy opened up a 6-3 lead with two steep returns and after winning a net duel. A backhand going to net and another net error from the Indian brought Shi Yu Qi back at 6-6.

The Chinese played a couple of nice-looking around the head smashes to move to 10-8. Prannoy again clawed back before Shi Yu Qi entered the break with a one-point advantage with another precise smash.

The two engaged in a fierce battle as lead changed hands too frequently, moving together till 14-14.

But the Indian seemed to have lost his focus there after as sprayed his service into the net and then Shi Yuqi produced a net kill and a smash to move to 17-14.

Another smash on his opponent forehand and it was five-game points for the Chinese, who converted it by sending another one away from Prannoy.

After the change of sides, Prannoy just didn't look in his element as Shi Yu Qi looked by far the better player as his net play was polished and he played some superb drops to open up a 6-3 lead.

The Chinese looked in control as he dictated the rallies and often finished the points unleashing his precise smashes on the flanks.

Prannoy failed to curb his errors as his blocks went to net and lifts long. Soon Shi Yu Qi held a handsome 11-4 advantage at the break.

The Chinese looked patient as he took pace off the rallies using his drops and half smashes, reverse hits and drew errors from his opponent.

Prannoy body language said it all as he couldn't put any pressure on his fancied opponent. In a jiffy it was 17-5 in the Chinese favour. He took 15 match points and sealed it when the Indian went long again.

"I think the first game was quite posed but I gave 2-3 points in the end. I was not able to move well in the second game. All credit to him, he has some good shots. Happy that could reach semifinals but still a lot work need to be done to go on and win tournaments," he said.

"It's better not to analyse too much now. It is a learning lesson. Hope I can do better next time." In the finals, Shi Yu Qi will face Hong Kong's Lee Cheuk Yiu, who stunned World Championships silver medallist Kodai Naraoka of Japan 21-13 15-21 21-19 to qualify for his first Super 750 men's singles final at the India Open.

The World No. 18 Lee had reached the finals at Hylo Open super 300 and Thailand Open super 500 last year.

In women's singles, China's Chen Yu Fei overcame compatriot Wang Zhi Yi in straight games to set up a women's singles final against Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying in a rematch of the Tokyo Olympics summit clash here.

Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Chen Yu Fei beat Wang Zhi Yi 21-13 21-18 in the semi-finals, while Tai Tzu Ying progressed to her second successive women's singles final of the season with a 21-13 21-18 win over world no. 20 Yeo Jia Min in the first women's singles semifinal.

"As Long As...": Dravid's Verdict On 'Controversial Run' During Super Over

Playing down the on-field controversy around a moment during the first super over of the pulsating third T20I against Afghanistan at the Chinnaswamy in Bengaluru on Wednesday, India head coach Rahul Dravid called it a "part of the game". India skipper Rohit Sharma was seen remonstrating with an on-field umpire after Afghan all-rounder Mohammed Nabi ran byes off a deflected throw during the first super over of the T20I on Wednesday. That moment was one of many that made the nail-biting contest one for the ages. The hosts, however, survived a mighty scare from the visitors to seal the contest in the second super over and ensure a series sweep. Nabi and Rahmanullah Gurbaz ran byes after Sanju Samson's throw struck the former and deflected off him to the outfield.

Giving his take on the incident, Dravid said, "It is fine. It is part of the game. Sometimes you get frustrated that it happens, but it's fair enough, all part of the game. It hit the non-striker and then it moved and I think that's fine and you can run for those."

Dravid went on to compare the incident with an instance that took place during the first T20I of the series when the hosts picked up a run in a similar situation.

"In the first T20, I think there was an incident where the ball hit the bat of one of our batsmen and we took a run as well. So I think there is nothing to read into it and I don't think nothing in the rules that stops you from actually taking those runs," Dravid said.

"Arguments can happen at the end of tight games. I think when you play for your country, there is so much passion and emotion and I think it is incredible that even in dead rubber games when it gets down to the wire, the competitiveness and passion come out. As long as it doesn't cross the line, and that's why we have match referees to look at these things," Dravid added.

Rohit was quite animated after Afghanistan decided to take a run after the ball struck the player. Even Virat Kohli pointed out that the ball had struck Nabi.

Dravid opined that such a display of emotions was normal and said, "Sometimes a little bit of that passion and emotion is really important. It shows how much the players care."

Coming to the match, Afghanistan managed to match India's 212 with a collective performance. The match went to super over which saw the first one ending on level terms forcing the game to move to the second one.

Rohit's impressive strikes and Ravi Bishnoi's composure with the ball helped India clinch the victory.

Carles Falcon, 45, Dies After Crash In Dakar Rally

Spanish motorcyclist Carles Falcon has died from the serious injuries he suffered last week on the second stage of the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia, his team said Monday. "On Monday, January 15, Carles passed away. The medical team has confirmed that the neurological damage caused by the cardio-respiratory arrest at the time of the accident is irreversible," the TwinTrail Racing Team said in a statement.

"Carles was a smiley person, always active, who enjoyed with passion everythign he did, especially motorcycles. He left us doing something that was his dream, racing the Dakar," it added.

The high-speed stage over jagged rocks and winding sand dunes in the Saudi desert was almost complete on January 7 when the experienced off-road rider from Tarragona crashed.

The 45-year-old was immediately  taken to hospital in Saudi Arabia in a medical helicopter, and later flown back to Spain where he had been in intensive care.

Twin Trail Racing said at the time that Falcon, a computer engineer by training, had suffered a fracture of his vertebrae.

The Dakar Rally is one of the world's longest and most demanding endurance races and this year's 8,000km long 12-stage marathon ends at the Red Sea on January 19.

Meanwhile, Mattias Ekstrom grabbed victory after Sebastien Loeb got lost on stage eight of the Dakar Rally on Monday while the Benavides brothers took the top two places in the bike competition.

Frenchman Loeb led by two-and-half minutes after 366km of the 458km stage from Al Duwadimi to Hail but went off course, had to double back and lost time.

Swede Ekstrom, whose chances of overall victory were wiped out by suspension problems the previous day, swept into the lead and finished 2min 45sec ahead of Audi team-mate Stephane Peterhansel. Another Frenchman, Guerlain Chicherit, was third at 3min 10sec.

Man Hugs Virat Kohli During Match, Detained For Security Breach

After a hiatus of more than 14 months, Team India's talisman batter Virat Kohli was back in T20I colours on Sunday, playing a handy knock to help his team beat Afghanistan in the second T20I in Indore. The crowd inside the Holkar Stadium gave a special ovation to Kohli everytime he touched the ball or collected a boundary. While no one has ever doubted Kohli's intent and desire while batting, the former India captain came out to bat with a different mindset as India blew away Afghanistan in a rather chilly evening in Indore.

Striking at 181.25, Kohli raced his way to 29 off just 15 balls before a mistimed shot ended his innings prematurely. He cracked five fours during his stay in the middle before being caught at mid-off.

While fans were chanting his name throughout the game, a fan seized his opportunity to meet Kohli as he ran inside the outfield while Kohli was fielding near the boundary.

The fan hugged Kohli and the star batter made his day by embracing him too. Pictures of the same moment has gone viral on social media. The incident happened in the 18th over.

However, the fan was detained for breaching security arrangements.

After detaining him, cops took the young man to Tukoganj police station.

A police official said that the youth had a ticket for the match and entered the Holkar Stadium from Narendra Hirwani Gate.

He said that the young man seemed to be a big Kohli fan and entered the ground by climbing the fence of the spectators' gallery with the desire to meet the player.

The officer said that the youth was being interrogated.

Further steps will be taken in the case on the basis of interrogation, the official said.

We Have The Team To Surprise Australia In AFC Asian Cup: Bhaichung Bhutia

The tag of favourites might be pinned on Australia, but former striker Bhaichung Bhutia insisted that India have the ammunition to surprise the world No. 25 Socceroos in their AFC Asian Cup group match in Qatar on Saturday. India are clubbed with title contenders Australia, Uzbekistan and Syria in Group B. "You never know. I will not be surprised if India get a good result tomorrow, I mean we have the team to surprise them. You know, Australia is not the Australia of a decade ago. We also have made progress as a team," Bhutia told PTI on Friday.

"Yes, it will be a tough match, but it is not an impossible task (to get a good result) for this side against them," said the former captain, who is in town for the Masterclass programme organised by Orchids School.

So, can India reach the Round of 16 in the tournament? "First thing first, we need to tackle Australia. If we can get a good result against them, who knows," said Bhutia.

However, Bhutia, who played more than 100 matches for the country between 1995 and 2011, said absence of some key players like Ashique Kuruniyan, Jeakson Singh and Anwar Ali could just peg back the India side a bit.

Defender Ali, midfielder Jeakson and winger Kuruniyan are recovering from their respective injuries and have not travelled with the team.

"Yes, it may be a bit of a concern because these are experienced players. I think the absence of Kuruniyan will especially hurt India. He is a strong and versatile player, who has the speed and skill.

"He is a constant threat to the opposition. But that said we have other good players who can make an impact," Bhutia added.

As ever, India will depend on their talismanic captain Sunil Chhetri to find the goals against some tough rivals in the event.

Bhutia admitted there could be a case of over-reliance but added that right now Chhetri is India's best bet to net goals.

"He (Chhetri) is a wonderful player. The need of the hour is to score goals and it is soothing to know that we have a dependable player in that department. Every team needs someone to get those crucial strikes.

"Hopefully, we can provide some good assists to him and I am sure there will be a couple of chances to find the back of the net," said the 'Sikkimese Sniper'.

"Yeah, he is getting old and, perhaps, we will have to unearth a couple of more Chhetris very soon," he said with a smile.

The 47-year-old lauded head coach Igor Stimac for keeping India a combat-ready outfit.

"He (Stimac) has proved to be a good coach. India had done well in the last couple of tournaments under him. He knows how to keep the players in high spirits during a match.

"I think we've had a good amount of preparation for this tournament despite those injuries that you were mentioning, and it's now all about the right execution," Bhutia opined.

Bhutia, a member of the sports ministry's Mission Olympic Cell, said India's strong effort in the Hangzhou Asian Games will have its reflection on the country's outing in the Paris Games later this year.

"We are hoping to better our Tokyo (Olympics) medal tally in Paris. I think the commitment the sports ministry has shown to this mission Olympic programme...we've given support of every possible nature to the athletes.

"So, we definitely are expecting good results from Paris. Neeraj (Chopra) had given us gold in javelin, and who knows there could be a couple of more (gold medals). So, fingers crossed," he concluded.

Rohit-Yashasvi Combination To Continue At Opening Slot, Confirms Dravid

India head coach Rahul Dravid confirmed on Wednesday that the team will persist with Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal as openers in the run-up to the T20 World Cup, underlining the importance of a left-right pair at the pole position. Rohit has returned to India's T20 scheme of things for the series against Afghanistan, beginning in Mohali on Thursday, after a hiatus of 14 months. His previous appearance was in the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal against England at Adelaide.

Jaiswal has been opening in the shortest format since the away series against the West Indies in August last year.

"As of now, we will be opening with Rohit and Jaiswal. When you have a squad that offers flexibility, we can take a call that is in the best interest of the team," Dravid said on the eve of the match.

"We are certainly happy with what Jaiswal has done for us as an opener. It also gives us the left-right combination at the top," added Dravid.

However, that will leave the question on how to find a place for Shubman Gill, who either opens or comes at No. 3 in T20Is. It is pertinent because Virat Kohli too has made a comeback to T20Is along with Rohit.

Star batsman Kohli has been named in the squad for the series against Afghanistan, though he will be available only from the second T20I.

So, how is the think-tank going to accommodate Kohli in the eleven? Is pairing Kohli with Rohit at the top a rational move to make? Dravid did not entirely rule out that possibility.

"Nothing is closed (Kohli opening with Rohit). We have no doubt that the kind of ability and skill sets players like Rohit and Kohli possess, they will be able to find answers against different kind of bowling," said Dravid.

The former Indian captain said the selection process will be dominated by the capability of a player to negate all circumstances, and will not merely rely on the desire to field a left-right combination.

"We still have left-handers in the line-up. But it is not only about left-handers but it is their ability to play through a period and to be able to tackle different kinds of spin that there is.

"Players like Rinku, Jaiswal and Tilak have come in as well, which adds a nice string to the bow. But in the end, we make selection on the basis of performance, not just on the left-hand or right-hand batsman," he insisted.

The Bengaluru man was wholesome in his praise for Rinku Singh, and lauded the Uttar Pradesh batter for performing the high-pressure job of finisher with aplomb.

"He has been performing well in the role of a finisher. This series (against Afghanistan) is another opportunity for him to develop himself as a cricketer further.

"Whatever opportunity he gets here or in the IPL, it will be good for his development. Whenever a player does well, he always remains in the thoughts of the selector," he said.

The 23-year-old received her maiden call for the India team in September 2021 She talked about watching Adam Gilchrist and how Smriti became her favourite. "Initially, I didn't follow anyone. I just wanted to enjoy batting. Then gradually, I also started focussing on wicketkeeping. I used to watch Adam Gilchrist. He was Australia's wicketkeeper-batsman. Then once Smriti di made her debut, she became my favourite immediately," Yastika said. The young batter expressed her excitement to don the Mumbai Indians jersey ahead of Women's Premier League Season 2. In her debut season for the Mumbai Indians, Yastika played 10 matches and amassed 214 runs at a strike rate of 112.04.

We would spend a lot of time talking about how we could improve our game. I am really looking forward to the forthcoming edition of the WPL. I can't wait to wear the Mumbai Indians jersey and go back to the ground. It's a completely different feeling being part of MI," Yastika said.

Before making her debut in Mackay against Australia, Yastika's childhood didn't revolve around cricket only. She used to play different sports in her childhood.

"I liked playing sports since childhood. I would go for swimming, karate and badminton. But I never thought cricket would become my career because academics were as important growing up. One of my neighbours used to play Ranji Trophy. He told my father about a girl's team practicing at a ground close to our home. My sister and I went there. However, I was too small then so they admitted my sister while I had to wait for two years. While I waited for my chance, I dreamt of going to the ground and playing with my sister," Yastika added.

Janith Liyanage 95 Gives Sri Lanka Hard Fought Win Over Zimbabwe

A back to the wall 95 by middle order batsman Janith Liyanage helped Sri Lanka beat Zimbabwe by two wickets in the second ODI of the three-match series in Colombo on Monday. Chasing 209 to win, Sri Lanka struggled as left-arm seamer Richard Ngarava troubled the batsmen with extra bounce. Ngarava claimed the first four Sri Lankan wickets, and picked up a fifth when he dismissed Maheesh Theekshana in his final over. Sri Lanka were  112, but a 56-run stand for the seventh wicket between Theekshana and Liyanage started the fight back. Ngarava finished with five for 32, his career best figures and Sri Lanka started to breath easier when he completed his 10 overs.

Liyanage, trying to keep up with the required rate, attempted to clear mid-off, but did not get the elevation needed and was dismissed five runs short of his hundred.

Liyanage was drafted into the Sri Lankan side for this series after his prolific form in domestic cricket.

His 95 came off 127 deliveries with six fours and two sixes. "I wanted get to the hundred but was disappointed," he said.

When Liyanage was dismissed, Sri Lanka required 37 runs with two wickets in hand.

Jeffrey Vandersay (19) and Dushmantha Chameera (18) knocked off the target, adding an unbroken 39 runs for the ninth wicket.

More than an hour's play was lost due to rain during the Sri Lankan innings, but the game continued without the overs being reduced.

Spin bowler Sikandar Raza backed up Ngarava, claiming two for 32 in his 10 overs, but there was not enough support from the rest of the bowlers.

Zimbabwe had opted to bat after winning the toss, with skipper Craig Ervine top scoring with 82 runs.

A one-handed diving catch by Sadeera Samarawickrama at extra cover dismissed Ervine, and soon Zimbabwe were struggling.

From 182 for four, Zimbabwe collapsed to be 209 all out, losing the last six wickets for 26 runs.

Theekshana picked up four wickets, while Chameera and  Vandersay claimed two wickets apiece.

Ervine called it a "well fought game" and was "proud" of his bowlers. "We have one more game and we need to look at squaring the series," he said.

Sri Lanka lead the three-match series 1-0. The first game on Saturday was washed out  and inclement weather could play spoilsport again.

The final game is on Thursday at the same venue.

Ranji Trophy: Seamers Set Up Mumbai's Outright Win Over Bihar

Seamers Shivam Dube (4/10) and Royston Dias (3/35) powered Mumbai's outright win over Bihar by an innings and 51 runs in their Ranji Trophy 2023-24 season opener on Monday. Bihar's fate was decided on the third day evening itself when they were reduced to 91/6 following-on, having made 100 in their first innings in reply to Mumbai's 251, with Mohit Avasthi returning 6/27. Bihar could not manage a run more than that in their second attempt and lost heavily as Mumbai walked away with seven points. Dube, who was named in India's squad for three T20Is against Afghanistan, celebrated his call-up with a superb 11-4-10-7 after 6-3-13-2 in the first innings.

In another game, Chhattisgarh also clinched an outright win and seven points following a 10-wicket hammering of Assam, for whom Riyan Parag produced a record century.

Parag cracked 12 sixes and 11 fours to make 155 from 87 balls for the second fastest century in the Ranji Trophy history, but his outstanding effort had no say in the outcome.

Chhattisgarh, who made 327 in the first innings, bowled out Assam for 159 in reply and Parag's ton could only take his side to 254 in the second essay.

Chhattisgarh remained unscathed in their 87-run chase.

However, at Visakhapatnam, Ricky Bhui's marathon 347-ball 175 (23x4s, 1x6s) helped Andhra force a draw against Bengal who made 409 batting first.

Bhui's ton, combined with fifties from Hanuma Vihari (51) and Shoaib Khan (56) took Andhra to 445 in reply with a slender 36-run first-innings lead, thus giving them three points from the tame draw in which Bengal reached 87/1 in their second essay.

At Alapuzzha, the visitors Uttar Pradesh team walked off with a draw and three points against hosts Kerala in a hard-fought contest.

UP took a 59-run lead in the first innings, for they dismissed Kerala at 243 after posting 302.

In the second innings, Priyam Garg (106) followed Aryan Juyal (115) in completing a three-figure mark as UP declared at 323/3, taking an overall lead of 382 runs.

In reply, Kerala were 72/2.

Brief scores: At Patna: Mumbai 251 beat Bihar 100 & 100 (Sharman Nigrodh 40; Shivam Dube 4/10, Royston Dias 3/35) by an innings and 51 runs.

At Raipur: Chhattisgarh 327 & 87/0 (Eknath Kerkar 31*, Rishabh Tiwari 48*) beat Assam 159 & 254 (Riyan Parag 155; Vashudev Bareth 3/59, Jivesh Butte 3/37) by 10 wickets.

At Visakhapatnam: Bengal 409 & 82/1 (Sourav Paul 30*; Shoaib Md Khan 1/16) drew with Andhra 445 (Hanuma Vihari 51, Ricky Bhui 175, Shoaib Khan 56; Mohammed Kaif 3/62).

At Alappuzha: Uttar Pradesh 302 & 323/3d (Aryan Juyal 115, Priyam Garg 106; Basil Thampi 1/30) drew with Kerala 243 & 72/2 (Rohan Kunnummal 42; Kuldeep Yadav 1/19). PTI AYG AYG DDV

Football Legend Franz Beckenbauer Dies At 78: German Football Federation

Franz Beckenbauer, an iconic German player and later coach with a knack for leading his teams to greatness, has died at the age of 78. Beckenbauer, one of only three men to win the World Cup as player and as a coach, was known as the Kaiser, a title that fitted both his stylish and assured playing style and his natural leadership.  "He was so elegant he wasn't really German," Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, a team-mate and later fellow administrator at Bayern Munich, said in a profile on the Bundesliga's official website. "He just oozed class and quality."

Beckenbauer helped establish Bayern as Germany's strongest club. At international level, he played a key role as Germany became a football powerhouse. Yet his final triumph, leading Germany's successful organisation of the 2006 World Cup, ultimately cast a shadow over his legacy, when he was implicated in possible corruption in securing the hosting rights.

Beckenbauer was born in derelict Munich in 1945, four months after the end of the Second World War.

"When I look at my life, I must have been born under a lucky star," he said looking back.

He was a childhood fan of Bayern's local rivals, but after an 1860 Munich player slapped him in a youth tournament, he made the fateful decision to switch loyalties.

"It wasn't the hand of God but a slap from an 1860 player," he said later.

While 1860 were selected as founder members of the Bundesliga in 1963, cash-strapped Bayern relied on youth to escape the regional leagues.

Beckenbauer made a scoring debut at 18 as an outside left in June 1963 in the promotion play-offs as Bayern narrowly missed out. He became a regular a month into the next season, scoring 16 goals as they cruised to promotion.

By 1966 he was in the West German midfield as they lost the World Cup final 4-2 to hosts England.

"I was told to mark what was then the best player: Bobby Charlton. Bobby told me later that (England manager) Alf Ramsey had told him to keep an eye on this young, good-looking German guy," he said.

"England beat us because Bobby Charlton was just a little bit better than me."

As teams switched from a back three to a back four, Beckenbauer dropped into central defence but revolutionised the position. He developed the role of "libero", sauntering forward to support the attack. With a relaxed swing of either boot, he could shoot from range with power, accuracy and swerve.

Beckenbauer took his revenge on England in Mexico in 1970, scoring the first goal as West Germany came from 2-0 down to beat the holders 3-2 in the quarter-finals.

In the semis against Italy, Beckenbauer dislocated his shoulder after West Germany had used their two permitted substitutes. He played in a sling as his team lost 4-3 in extra time in an all-time World Cup classic.

Four years later, Beckenbauer captained West Germany to victory. They beat the Netherlands 2-1 in the final in his home city of Munich after Johan Cruyff had given the Dutch a first-minute lead.

"Johan was a better player, but I won the World Cup," Beckenbauer would say.

Beckenbauer took over as national coach in 1984. He managed West Germany to victory in Italy in 1990, when they beat Argentina 1-0 in the final.

He said he told the team to "get out there, have fun, play football."

Only Mario Zagallo, who died on Friday aged 92, Didier Deschamps and Beckenbauer have won the World Cup as both player and manager.

Beckenbauer also accumulated medals at club level.

He made 424 Bundesliga appearances, mostly in a 13-year spell for Bayern, where he won four German titles and three European Cups.

He joined Pele at the New York Cosmos in 1977.

"It was the best decision in my life to come to New York," Beckenbauer told the New York Times in 1978. "Here it is so private. I go places without people recognising me."

He was lured back to the Bundesliga by Hamburg where we won another German title in 1982 before returning to New York for a final season with the Cosmos.

"Success is like hunting a shy deer," he once said. "The wind has to be right. The scent, the stars and the moon."

Beckenbauer had stints as manager at both Bayern and Marseille, winning the French title in 1991 and the Bundesliga in 1994.

It was in that year that he became president of Bayern, although he coached the team for five games in 1996. He became a vice-president of the German Football Association (DFB) and in 2007 joined the Executive Committee of football's world governing body, FIFA.

He was head of the organising committee for the 2006 World Cup. The successful tournament is nostalgically referred to in Germany as "the summer fairytale".

However, the story turned sour in October 2015 when German magazine Spiegel alleged that, in 2000, the DFB had bought votes before beating South Africa 12-11 to win the hosting rights.

"I have not sent anyone money to acquire votes for the awarding of the 2006 World Cup to Germany," insisted Beckenbauer.

In 2019, Swiss prosecutors charged three former DFB officials with fraud relating to the 2006 World Cup but left out Beckenbauer's name.

They then deemed Beckenbauer, who had heart surgery in 2016 and 2017, "unable for health reasons to participate or to be questioned" in court.

Beckenbauer was also banned for 90 days by FIFA in June 2014 for allegedly refusing to cooperate with an inquiry into the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar.

Beckenbauer had five children from three relationships, one a marriage. When he was 18, he was dropped from the West German youth team after his unwed girlfriend became pregnant and he refused to marry her.

"I've had my family tree researched," he said much later. The Beckenbauers "were merry people, all the kids born out of wedlock. We've carried on the tradition."

Rahane Explains Absence From Mumbai Ranji Trophy Team Against Bihar

As the Indian cricket team struggled to put runs on the board on the tricky South African conditions, fans and some former cricketers recalled Ajinkya Rahane's heroics in the Rainbow Nation. As Rahane's fans keep their hopes of seeing the veteran batter making a Test comeback alive, it was strange to see him not making Mumbai's playing XI for the Ranji Trophy match against Bihar. The veteran batter, however, has now revealed that his absence was due to a small injury concern.

"I have a great passion for playing, and that's why I came to Patna. I never back down from playing. However, during a practice session, I suffered a minor injury in my neck. That's why I am not playing this match. But I will definitely play in the upcoming Ranji matches," Rahane was quoted as saying by India Today.

Fans turned up in huge numbers in Patna for the Bihar vs Mumbai match, leaving players like Rahane mesmerised.

"It's not like they were only supporting Bihar," said Rahane. "They are supporting the Mumbai team along with the Bihar team."

Earlier, Rahane posted a video of him batting in the nets, gearing up for the Ranji Trophy campaign with Mumbai. With the Indian team for the England series not yet announced, Rahane, along with Cheteshwar Pujara, remain in the fray for a recall. However, the latter has a bigger chance of being called up, courtesy of his double ton in the recent Ranji Trophy match.

Pujara and Rahane are two of the finest batters India have had in the Test format. But, the selection committee are looking to find their long-term replacements in the longest format of the game. The likes of Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, etc. are being backed for the future but they are yet to cement thier spots in the team.

Bangladesh Cricket Team Captain Shakib Al Hasan Wins Parliament Seat

Bangladeshi cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan won a seat in the country's parliament Sunday after a landslide victory in a general election boycotted by the opposition, an official said. The 36-year all-rounder, who leads the country in all formats of the game, beat his rival by a margin of more than 150,000 votes in his constituency in the western town of Magura, the district's chief administrator Abu Naser Beg said. "It was a landslide victory," he said. There is no immediate comment from the cricketer, a candidate of the ruling Awami League party of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is herself widely expected to win a fifth term in power after the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) boycotted the vote.

Shakib, speaking ahead of the election, conceded he was not facing any serious obstacle but told AFP the contest still made him anxious.

"The competition and challenges are always there, be it a small team or big team," he said.

Shakib's campaign obliged him to take a temporary leave of absence from cricket.

He has bristled at the suggestion he would not be able to balance his duties as a lawmaker and a cricket captain.

"Did I retire?" he asked during campaigning. "If I haven't retired, then where does this question come from?"

Shakib is the only person to have been ranked the number-one all-rounder in all three formats simultaneously by the International Cricket Council.

He was a teenager when he was recruited to the country's premier sports academy and just 19 at his international debut in 2006 as a batting all-rounder.

By the following year, he was already a star when he hit a fifty in a David-and-Goliath show against India in the World Cup -- a victory still spoken of reverentially by Bangladeshi fans.

He has also garnered a reputation for ill-discipline, with a rebellious streak that once saw him threaten a spectator with a bat, and that earned him a three-match ban after making a lewd gesture to a television crew.

Meet India's Youngest First-Class Debutant From Bihar, Vaibhav Suryavanshi

The ongoing edition of Ranji Trophy is gaining all the attention as batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi has made his first-class debut. The special thing about this batter is his age, as he is only 12-years-old. Vaibhav made his debut for Bihar in Ranji Trophy match against Mumbai on Friday at the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium, Patna. With his historic debut, this young lad surpassed the batting icons of India Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh, to become the youngest debutant in India's first-class cricket.

Sachin made his first-class debut at the age of 15 years and 230 days. On the other hand, Yuvraj was 15 years and 57 days old, at the time of his debut.

Talking about Vaibhav, the young Bihar-based batter had earlier played for India B U19 team in a Quadrangular Under-19 series. He stunned everyone with his performance as he scored 177 runs in six matches, including two fifties.

Viabhav then went on to feature in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, where he emerged as the eighth highest run-scorer with a total of 393 runs. His stats include a century and three half-centuries.

Earlier, Bihar's Moin-ul-Haq Stadium hogged limelight for a wrong reason. The venue is hosting a Ranji Trophy Elite Group match after a 27-year-long gap and the miserable condition of the stadium has become a talking point.

It is worth noting that Bihar is currently playing against Mumbai in an Elite Group B match at the Moin-Ul-Haq Stadium.

As stars like Sarfaraz Khan and Shivam Dube are playing in the match, fans entered the stadium in huge number but no proper seating and the deteriorating condition of the stadium has invited wide criticism.

A video of the stadium's poor condition went viral on social media and that saw former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad also slamming the state's cricket governing body.

"This is unacceptable. Ranji Trophy is the premiere domestic competition in India and it's time all stakeholders realise it's value. Don't see any valid reason for the state association not rectifying this," said Venkatesh while reacting to the viral video.

Alexander Isak Stars As Newcastle Beat Bitter Rivals Sunderland In FA Cup

Newcastle ended their 13-year wait to beat bitter rivals Sunderland as Alexander Isak's double inspired a 3-0 win in the FA Cup third round on Saturday. In the first Tyne and Wear derby since 2016, Eddie Howe's side put their bitter local rivals to the sword thanks to Dan Ballard's first-half own goal and Isak's brace after the break at the Stadium of Light. Newcastle had lost six of their previous seven clashes with Sunderland, but their composed display neutered the fired-up Black Cats and delivered a first derby success since a 1-0 victory in 2011. After four successive defeats in all competitions, Howe hoped the derby would be a "season-changing" moment to salve the wounds from their Champions League exit and poor Premier League form. Whether vanquishing second-tier opponents will prove transformative remains to be seen, but for now local pride was all that mattered to the 6,000 Newcastle fans who waved their black and white scarves in delight at the final whistle.

While the northeast rivalry might lack the glamour of the Manchester and north London derbies, there is no questioning the rivalry between clubs separated by just 14 miles.

Encapsulating the enmity was a bizarre incident this week when Sunderland were forced to apologise to furious fans after a stadium bar was redecorated with Newcastle colours in the corporate hospitality section of the visitors' support.

Newcastle's fans were taken to the stadium on buses in a huge police convoy, then given their tickets to the match, in a bid to avoid the violent scenes that have marred previous encounters.

Howe had enlisted the help of the few Geordies in Newcastle's squad to tell the rest of his globally assembled squad just how important the derby is.

The message clearly hit home as Newcastle dominated a frenetic encounter.

Responding to the sound and fury in the stands, tackles flew in with abandon from both teams.

Sunderland's Jobe Bellingham, brother of Real Madrid star Jude, caught Joelinton with a crude lunge before Jack Clarke pole-axed Sven Botman to the audible delight of the Black Cats fans.

Amid the maelstrom, Newcastle kept their nerve and snatched the lead in the 35th minute as Ballard stretched to block Joelinton's cross but only succeeded in diverting the ball into his own net.

Sunderland gifted Newcastle their second goal less than 60 seconds after the interval when Almiron robbed the dawdling Pierre Ekwah inside his own area and teed up Isak to fire home from 10 yards.

Ballard's 90th minute foul on Anthony Gordon conceded a penalty that Isak converted to cap the exclamation point on Newcastle's victory.

Non-league Maidstone United, the lowest ranked team left in the competition, clinched a surprise 1-0 win against Stevenage to reach the fourth round for the first time.

There is a 69-place gap between George Elkobi's Kent-based club and third-tier Stevenage.

But in their first third round appearance since 1988, the National League South minnows made history as Sam Corne netted a penalty in first half stoppage-time before fans flooded the pitch in celebration at the final whistle.

In Saturday's other early third round ties, Leicester took a break from their Championship promotion push to beat Millwall 3-2 at The Den.

Ten points clear at the top of the Championship, the 2021 FA Cup winners were able to rest several players and still saw off Millwall through goals from Cesare Casadei, Ricardo Pereira and Tom Cannon.

Ipswich, who are second to Leicester in the Championship, moved into the fourth round with a 3-1 win at League Two side AFC Wimbledon.

Later on Saturday, inconsistent Chelsea will look to avoid a shock at home to Championship side Preston, while surprise title chasers Aston Villa travel to second-tier Middlesbrough.

"If 20 Wickets Fell On Day 1 In India": Indian Star's Dig At Pitch Critics

As a whopping 23 wickets fell on Day 1 of the second Test between India and South Africa in Cape Town, the world of social media is going ga-ga over the nature of pitch used in the match. Whenever an early result is obtained in a Test match in India, the 'pitch critics' often call out the imbalance between the bat and the ball. However, no such remark has been made yet about the Newlands wicket. Indian cricketer Mayank Agarwal, reacting to the developments in South Africa, wondered what would've happened had 20 wickets fell on the first day of a Test match in India.

"What if 20 wickets fell on day 1 in India," Agarwal posted on X (formerly Twitter), taking a subtle dig at those who often criticse India's spin friendly wickets.

Former India cricketer, Aakash Chopra, also took a subtle dig at the Newlands pitch, saying he expects the match to be over on teh second day.

"We have again taken three wickets (in the second innings). We are still well ahead in the game. The match will be over on the second day. Why do you keep five-day Test matches? The first match lasted three days and the second match will last two days," he said on his YouTube channel.

"I hope that does not happen, but the only chance for India to lose is if South Africa get a 150-run lead. Other than that, I feel we are in the driver's seat. So the expectation is that when this match ends, the series would be tied at 1-1 and we would have registered our first-ever win in a Cape Town Test," he added.

Chopra also lauded Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj who bagged a six-wicket haul in the first innings, saying that the best of Siraj is "magical".

"You have to credit the Indian bowling for the way they bowled, especially Mohammed Siraj. This is what makes Siraj extremely special. The best of Miyan Magic is actually magical," said Chopra.

"When he bowled against Sri Lanka - six wickets, and when he bowled here - six wickets. If you see his action, he falls slightly towards the left and it seems the ball would come in but the ball pitches and goes away. The ball also shapes away a little in the air. So there he kept picking up wickets," he added.

"We Will Win The Match Easily If...": Sourav Ganguly On IND vs SA 2nd Test

Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday praised India's bowling attack against South Africa in the second Test match in Cape Town and said that if the visitors perform well with the bat then they will easily win the long-format game. Ganguly met the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Vishnu Deo Sai in Raipur after getting an invitation from him. While speaking to the press, Ganguly said that he was sad after the 'Men in Blue' lost the ODI World Cup 2023 final match against Australia after displaying a magnificent performance throughout the tournament.

He also pointed out India's stellar performance in the second Test match against the Proteas.

"I am sad that we could not win the World Cup after playing such a good cricket, but we will win in the future. The team has got a lot of quality. Look how they dismissed South Africa at 55 in Cape Town. If they perform well with the bat then we will win the Test match easily. We have also won the ODI series against South Africa," Ganguly said.

In the second Test match against South Africa, Mohammed Siraj's six-wicket haul helped India to bundle the hosts at 55/10 in the first inning on day one.

He added that "it was nice" meeting the CM for the first time. The former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president also praised the cricket facilities of the new stadium in Raipur. He also asked the CM Vishnu Deo to promote cricket in the state.

"I was happy to meet the CM Vishnu Deo Sai, and this was the first time we met so it was nice. When I was the President of the BCCI, India played against New Zealand over here in Chhattisgarh. It's a new stadium and also a new state for the Ranji Trophy. The facilities are also good here. I have also asked the CM to promote cricket in the state. This was the first time I met CM and I did not expect that I would get an invitation from him," he added.

When asked about the upcoming T20 World Cup, he said that the best team would be picked and hoped that the 'Men in Blue' would perform well in the tournament.

"Still a lot of time left for the T20 World Cup. India has many good players and hopefully, the best team will be selected and we will perform well in the tournament," he added.
