Premier League: Arsenal Falter Once More At Fulham, Spurs Close On Top 4

Arsenal's Premier League title challenge suffered another blow in a 2-1 defeat at Fulham on Sunday, as Tottenham beat Bournemouth 3-1 to close in on their north London rivals. The Gunners' high hopes of a first league title in 20 years have been rocked by two damaging defeats in four days. Mikel Arteta was looking for a response after losing 2-0 at home to West Ham on Thursday and the visitors started brightly at Craven Cottage.

Bukayo Saka pounced to tap home his first goal in six games after Bernd Leno parried Gabriel Martinelli's initial effort.

But Arsenal failed to build on their early advantage and Fulham hit back to snap a three-game losing run in the Premier League without even scoring a goal.

Raul Jimenez was badly missed during his three-game ban for a red card at Newcastle and the Mexican kickstarted the Fulham fightback with his fourth goal in as many games.

Former Arsenal winger Willian sent Tom Cairney free down the left and his dangerous low cross was swept home by Jimenez at the back post.

Martinelli was inches away from restoring Arsenal's lead before the break.

But it was Fulham who were the better side in the second half and they got their reward just before the hour mark.

Arsenal failed to clear a corner and the ball broke kindly for Bobby De Cordova-Reid to smash home from close range.

Only a fine save from David Raya to deny Cairney and the crossbar from Andreas Pereira's free-kick prevented Arsenal from suffering further punishment in the pouring rain in west London.

But enough damage may have been done to their title aspirations over the past week.

Arsenal remain in fourth, two points behind leaders Liverpool and level on 40 points with Manchester City, but having played a game more than both their title rivals.

Son's parting gift

Arteta's men could even be outside the top four by the time they are next in league action in three weeks' time as Tottenham closed to within a point of the Champions League places.

Ange Postecoglou's men shrugged off a mounting injury crisis to inflict Bournemouth's first defeat in eight games.

Pape Sarr's precise finish into the bottom corner opened the scoring after just nine minutes.

But the Senegalese midfielder left the field in tears midway through the first half with an injury that puts his participation in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in doubt.

Bournemouth will feel they should have been level before the break as the in-form Dominic Solanke hit the bar amid a flurry of chances.

Instead, the visitors were picked off in the second half.

Son Heung-min is also set to depart for a few weeks to lead South Korea at the Asia Cup.

The Spurs captain signed off in style with a thumping finish from a narrow angle before Richarlison made it 3-0.

Alex Scott pulled a goal back six minutes from time, but it was too little, too late for the Cherries, who remain in 12th.

United Cup: Defending Champions USA Beat Battling Britain

Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz had to fight through a deciding doubles match to conclude a 2-1 defeat of Britain on Sunday for the United States to stay in title contention at the United Cup. The defending champions, who won the trophy last January over Italy, earned a 1-6, 7-6 (7/5), 10-7 mixed doubles win to claim victory in Perth after the sides split the singles. "We have a team energy from last year here, we don't want to take a loss and let it die," said Fritz, who was broken twice in the opening set.

World number five Pegula added: "To get a win in this fashion after such a long day (on court) brings back a lot of memories.

"It was a big win today, especially after losing such a tough singles match."

Britain, who beat Australia to open their tournament account, took a 1-0 lead when Pegula crashed 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to Katie Boulter in the singles.

It was Boulter's first win over a top-five player on her seventh attempt after she bounced back from a set and double-break down.

"This was a very hard match for both of us," said the 56th-ranked Boulter. "I play my best tennis when I'm smiling and having fun.

"I kept trying to get over the line. I thrive in a team atmosphere... so many tennis heads giving information. It helps you to think clearly."

Pegula's 10th-ranked teammate Fritz kept the tie alive despite a thigh strain he blamed on over-training, defeating Cameron Norrie 7-6 (5), 6-4.

"I strained something but got through it," said Fritz. "Cam and I have played so many times (14). It's always a battle, always close."

World number one Novak Djokovic opens his season for Serbia later against China's Zhang Zhizhen, with the Chinese team on a high after beating the Czech Republic 3-0.

In Sydney, Leylah Fernandez led Canada to a fighting victory over Chile with the former US Open finalist winning her singles rubber and then backing up in a decisive mixed doubles.

The 35th-ranked Fernandez got Canada off to a perfect start, cruising past Chile's Daniela Seguel 6-2, 6-3 in 73 minutes.

With Canadian number one Felix Auger-Aliassime sitting out the men's singles, 314th-ranked Steven Diez stepped up but was toppled by world number 19 Nicolas Jarry 7-5, 6-4.

It set up a deciding mixed doubles, with Fernandez teaming with Diez to battle past Seguel and Tomas Barrios Vera 7-5, 4-6, 10-8.

"I'm extremely happy with the way I played," said Fernandez, who was part of the Canadian team that won the Billie Jean King Cup for the first time this year.

The 21-year-old broke five times in her singles clash against a player in her first WTA Tour-level singles match in nearly two years, using the serve-and-volley tactic well.

"First match of the season so had some nerves, but happy with the way I was able to handle it," she said.

Seven Uncapped Players Named In South Africa's Test Squad For New Zealand

Only two of the players who were in South Africa's Test win over India on Thursday are in a 14-man squad for two Tests in New Zealand in February. Cricket South Africa on Saturday named a squad which includes seven uncapped players, including a new captain in left-handed opening batsman Neil Brand. Batsman Keegan Petersen and David Bedingham are the only players who were part of South Africa's innings win in the first Test against India in Centurion. Due to a ruling by Cricket South Africa, no players contracted to franchises in the SA20 competition, which overlaps with the Tests, were eligible for selection.

Despite having to travel with a makeshift squad, Test coach Shukri Conrad said he was confident that the team would be competitive.

"The players selected for this tour have every chance of challenging New Zealand," said Conrad, who pointed out that most of the players had shown their ability while playing for South Africa A in recent series against West Indies A and India A.

Brand, 27, was born in Johannesburg but went to high school in England at King's College, Taunton.

He has a solid first-class record with 2906 runs at an average of 39.27. He is also a capable left-arm orthodox spin bowler who has taken 72 wickets at an average of 30.81.

The early announcement of the touring party appeared to end speculation that opening batsman Dean Elgar might be persuaded to delay his retirement from international cricket beyond the second Test at Newlands in Cape Town, starting on Wednesday.

Elgar was named man of the match in the first Test against India after scoring 185 in South Africa's only innings. He will lead the team in the second Test following an injury to Temba Bavuma.

South African squad:

Neil Brand (capt), David Bedingham, Ruan de Swardt, Clyde Fortuin (wkt), Zubayr Hamza, Tshepo Moreki, Mihlali Mpongwana, Duanne Olivier, Dane Paterson, Keegan Petersen, Dane Piedt, Raynard van Tonder, Shaun von Berg, Khaya Zondo.

Carlo Ancelotti Snubs Brazil, Commits To Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti extended his contract with Real Madrid to June 2026 on Friday which would rule him out of becoming Brazil national coach. "Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti have reached agreement on the extension of his contract till June 30, 2026," Real said in a statement. It had been reported in July this year that 64-year-old Ancelotti would become the first foreigner to coach Brazil in almost 60 years once he saw out his present Real contract next year. The Brazil Football Confederation had named Fernando Diniz as the temporary manager before they anticipated Ancelotti taking control for the 2024 Copa America. Ednaldo Rodriguez, the then president of the CBF, held months of negotiations with Ancelotti, who had previously stated the Real job would be his last in football.

However, it appeared one of the most glamorous and challenging jobs in football had brought a change of mind.

"We went after him not only due to his record, but also because he is a decent person," Rodrigues told beIN Sports earlier this year.

"Those who have worked with him say that he is open, cultured, and he appreciates Brazilian football."

However, under Diniz Brazil's woes on the pitch have continued and the team currently occupy the sixth and final regional qualifying spot for the 2026 World Cup.

The CBF did not wish to comment on the news about Ancelotti when contacted by AFP on Friday.

Ancelotti for his part never verbally confirmed that he had agreed to become Brazil coach.

"I am still here," he told the press on October 21.

"There are a lot of rumours, but I think everything will be clearer soon.

"Obviously as I have repeatedly said, I am very happy at Real Madrid.

"I am an egotist, of course," he added drily.

Compared to Brazil, Real's results this season have been largely positive -- they top La Liga and eased into the Champions League knockout rounds with six wins from six matches.

Ancelotti is regarded as one of the greatest coaches of all time.

He has won the Champions League four times -- twice with AC Milan and twice with Real Madrid.

He has won domestic league titles with Real and Milan, in England with Chelsea, in Germany with Bayern Munich and in France with Paris Saint-Germain.

Former Indian Football Team Defender Prabir Majumdar Dies At 77

Former Indian defender Prabir Majumdar died on Thursday after suffering from a brief illness.
He was 77 and is survived by his wife and a son. A stylish wing-back of the 1960s and 1970s, Majumdar was a member of the Indian team in the 1974 Asian Games. He also featured for the national side during the 1974 Asian Games held in Tehran, where the team failed to create an impact and finished at the bottom of the group table.

In the domestic circuit, Majumdar was a part of East Bengal and Eastern Railways, besides also representing Bengal in the Santosh Trophy.

His stint with East Bengal was the highlight of his career during the 1970s, as the club had a golden run during that phase.

Expressed his condolences, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) president said: "Prabir-da was one of the most dependable and respected defenders of his time and stood out among many star players.

"I extend my sincerest condolences to his family at this time of sorrow." Majumdar won several titles with East Bengal, which included the Calcutta Football League, IFA Shield, Durand Cup, Rovers Cup, DCM Trophy, Bordoloi Trophy, and many more.

"Prabir Majumdar was a top footballer of his time and continued to inspire footballers of later generations. His death has created a void in Indian football," AIFF Secretary M Satyanarayan said in a release.

"Top 10 In India's History": Gavaskar's Epic Praise For Rahul's Ton vs SA

KL Rahul's brave century during the ongoing opening Test against South Africa here on Wednesday drew high acclaim from the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who has rated the knock "in the top ten in the history" of India's red-ball cricket. Rahul, who walked into the middle while the Indians were four down for 92 on Day 1 on Tuesday, made a gutsy 101 off 137 balls before being knocked over by debutant pacer Nandre Burger, as the visitors were all out for 245.

Commentating in Hindi on Star Sports, Gavaskar asserted that Rahul's knock had come on a difficult surface, where the ball was behaving erratically, and felt that the confidence needed to bat on such a track has to be enormous.

"I have been watching cricket for over 50 years now, and I can undoubtedly say this century by Rahul has to be in the top ten of India's Test history because it's a different pitch here," Gavaskar said.

"A batter would not gain the confidence so easily that he has set, especially with the ball doing anything at any time." Applauding the six that Rahul hit off Gerald Coetzee to get to his ton, Gavaskar added, "The shot with which he reached to his hundred, no praise would be enough for it. It was a length ball, and he played a shot that you would normally see in T20s. Amazing!" Rahul's century happened to be his second at this ground. He is now the only overseas batter to have multiple Test tons here.

Striking 14 fours and four sixes during his knock, he has also become the second Indian wicketkeeper-batter after Rishabh Pant to hit a Test century in the country.

Rahul also continued his impeccable record of scoring hundreds in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) countries, with five of his eighth tons coming in these nations.

Wood Treble Gives Nuno First Win As Nottingham Forest Boss

Nuno Espirito Santo clinched his first win in charge of Nottingham Forest as Chris Wood's hat-trick against his former club Newcastle inspired a 3-1 victory, while Liverpool will go top of the Premier League if they avoid defeat at Burnley later on Tuesday. Wood left Newcastle to join Forest in a £15 million ($19 million) deal in June, but had scored only four times for his new club. The 32-year-old New Zealand international managed just two league goals for Newcastle last term, but he surpassed that meagre total with a treble in 60 minutes at St James' Park. Alexander Isak's first half penalty put Newcastle ahead, but Wood equalised just before the break.

He struck twice more in the second half to give former Tottenham manager Nuno his maiden victory with Forest in his second game in charge after replacing the sacked Steve Cooper.

It was Forest's first win in eight games and only their second success in their last 15 matches.

Forest moved five points clear of the relegation zone ahead of the rest of the day's matches.

Newcastle's fifth defeat in their last seven games in all competitions leaves them seven points adrift of the top four in seventh place.

Nuno's first game in charge ended in a painful 3-2 stoppage-time defeat against Bournemouth at the City Ground last weekend.

Newcastle took the lead in the 23rd minute when Sweden striker Isak was tripped in the area by Ola Aina.

Isak picked himself up to squeeze the penalty past Matt Turner for his 10th goal this season.

Anthony Elanga wasted two good chances to equalise when he fired into the side-netting and shot straight at Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka moments later when a pass to the unmarked Wood looked the better option.

- Lethal Wood -

Forest kept battling and they equalised in first half stoppage-time.

Making amends for his earlier mistake, Elanga was the provider as he took Morgan Gibbs-White's pass and cut back a low cross that Wood finished from close-range.

Forest went ahead in the 53rd minute when Elanga's superb through-ball reached Wood, who guided a cool finish past Dubravka.

Wood was in the mood and he completed his hat-trick on the hour, surging onto Murillo's pass and slaloming around Dubravka to slot home.

Luton earned a crucial 3-2 win against relegation rivals Sheffield United thanks to a pair of late own goals.

United were leading 2-1 after goals from Oli McBurnie and Anel Ahmedhodzic overturned Alfie Doughty's first-half opener for the Hatters at Bramall Lane.

But substitute Morris was the orchestrator as Jack Robinson and Anis Slimane put through their own net to give Luton successive league wins for the first time this term.

Third bottom Luton are just one point from safety, while United remain bottom of the table.

The clash was also notable for being the first Premier League match to be officiated by a black referee for 15 years as Sam Allison took the whistle.

Bournemouth crushed Fulham 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium to make it four successive wins.

The Cherries went in front late in the first half when Justin Kluivert's shot squirmed under Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Dominic Solanke netted from the penalty spot just past the hour and Luis Sinisterra's 25-yard rocket capped the rout.

Later on Boxing Day, second placed Liverpool will climb above leaders Arsenal with a draw or win against second bottom Burnley.

Third placed Aston Villa will aim to step up their unexpected title challenge with a victory at troubled Manchester United.

How Has Bumrah Performed In Boxing Day Tests? Here's A Look At Statistics

During the first Test between India and South Africa at Centurion, a much-anticipated Boxing Day affair, Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will be wearing the whites for the first time in around one and the half years. The first Test of the two-match series will be starting from Tuesday at Centurion. Bumrah, who last played a Test for India against England at Birmingham in July last year as a captain, will be playing his first Test in a long while after struggling with injuries that kept him out for much of this year.

With 128 wickets in 30 Tests with the best bowling figures of 6/27, Bumrah has a reputation and numbers by his side. In just six Tests in South Africa, Bumrah has taken 26 wickets at an average of 24.38, with the best figures of 5/42.

Besides these great overall numbers, this pacer also has great numbers in 'Boxing Day' Tests played in Australia and South Africa. India has never lost a Test match with Bumrah throwing down his rocket-like deliveries on the pitch. India has played three Boxing Day matches with Bumrah in their squad, two against Australia in Australia and one against Proteas in Centurion. India has won all of these matches.

In his first-ever Boxing Day outing against Australia back in December 2018, Bumrah ripped through an Australian batting line-up already struggling without Steve Smith and David Warner, who were completing their bans faced due to a ball-tampering scandal that year.

After India made 443/7 in the first innings, Bumrah's 6/33 which included wickets of Aaron Finch, Shaun Marsh and Travis Head bundled out Australia for 151, giving India a 292-run lead in the first innings. Later when India came to defend 399 runs, Bumrah took 3/53, helping India bundle out Australia for 261, giving them a 137 run win.

Bumrah got the 'Player of the Match'.

The pacer's next Boxing Day Test was the second Test against Australia, which had come after India was bundled out for just 36 at Adelaide and faced an embarrassing loss. In this Test, Bumrah bowled with vengeance in his mind, removing Joe Burns, Travis Head, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon to get figures of 4/56, bundling out Aussies for 195 in the first innings.

Posting 326 in the first innings, India gained a 131 run lead and allowed Australia to take a slender 69-run second innings lead. Australia was all out for 200, with Bumrah (2/54) removing Steve Smith and Pat Cummins. India won that match by eight wickets to turn the tables in what would turn out to be one of the greatest bilateral cricket events ever.

Bumrah played his first Boxing Day Test in South African territory next year. After India made 327 in first innings thanks to a superb century by KL Rahul, Bumrah took 2/16, removing skipper Dean Elgar and Keshav Maharaj to give India a 130-run lead. India gained a 304-run second-innings lead by scoring 174 in their second innings. In defence of 305 runs, another Bumrah special followed as he removed Maharaj and Rassie Van Der Dussen and got the crucial wicket of Elgar to finish with 3/50, bundling out SA for 191 and winning the game by 113 runs.

Overall in three Boxing Day Tests, Bumrah has taken 20 wickets with the best figures of 6/33.

Bumrah will be a lethal weapon in India's pace armoury and it would be important that he shines if India has any chance of taking a 1-0 series lead.

How Has Virat Kohli Performed In Boxing Day Tests? Here's A Look At Stats

A month after a heartbreaking ICC Cricket World Cup final loss to Australia, star India batter Virat Kohli will take to the field in whites during the first Test against South Africa in Centurion, a Boxing Day affair, on Tuesday. As it has been with Virat over the years, the weight of expectations, the cheers of fans, and the anticipation of a century or record break will be at their highest when he takes to the field. Virat has great Test stats against South Africa and in South Africa as well. In 14 Tests against the Proteas, he has scored 1,236 runs at an average of 56.18, with three tons and four fifties in 24 innings. His best score is 254 not out.

In South Africa, Virat has scored 719 runs in seven Tests at an average of 51.35, with two centuries and three fifties in 14 innings. His best score is 153.

Virat's statistics in the Boxing Day Test are pretty mixed. In his debut Boxing Day Test back in 2011 against Australia at Melbourne, he could score just 11 and 0 in his two innings. India lost that match by 122 runs.

His next Boxing Day outing was slightly better, against South Africa, in which he scored 46,11. India lost that Test by 10 wickets.

His next Boxing Day Test outing against Australia was brilliant, as he scored 169 and 54 in both his innings to help India draw the match. From the next Test onwards, a new era of Indian cricket started with Virat as Test skipper following the sudden retirement of MS Dhoni.

Four years later, Virat played another Boxing Day Test at MCG, scoring 82 and 0 in both innings. India won that match by 137 runs, giving Virat his first-ever win in a Boxing Day Test.

At Centurion three years later, Virat was going through a rough patch in Test cricket, scoring 35 and 18 in both innings of his fifth Boxing Day Test. India won the match by 113 runs.

Overall, Virat has played five Boxing Day Tests, scoring 426 runs in 10 innings at an average of 42.60, with a century and two fifties. Viras has won two Boxing Day Tests, both of them as a captain, lost two and drawn one.

Given the form Virat is in, this Centurion Test will serve as Virat's chance to continue his rich run of form and improve his Boxing Day Test batting numbers.

"Don't Want Any Honour Till...": Bajrang Punia On Taking Back Padma Shri

Olympic medalist Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia on Sunday said that he will not take back his Padma Shri award that he returned to the government until justice is given to his "sisters and daughters" fighting against sexual harassment and their perpetrators. Bajrang's tweet comes after a major decision in light of fresh protests by star wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Punia over the election of an aide of deposed Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) former president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh as the new president of the wrestling federation.

However, the Union Sports Ministry on Sunday suspended the sport's premier governing body in the country along with all its office-bearers.

"We trust only in God I returned my Padma Shri award for my sisters and daughters; I returned it for their honor and I do not want any honour until they get justice. Jai Hind," tweeted Bajrang.

The decision came close on the heels of newly elected WFI president Sanjay Singh announcing the hosting of the U-15 and U-20 nationals at Nandini Nagar in the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh by the end of the year.

Also, the Union Sports Ministry on Sunday instructed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to form an ad-hoc committee to manage and control the affairs of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), as per a source from the ministry.

Earlier, Olympian Sakshi Malik announced her retirement from wrestling at an emotional press briefing, claiming that the Centre went back on its word to not install an aide of Brij Bhushan as an office-bearer of the wrestling federation.

Later, voicing his misgivings over the election of Sanjay Singh as the new WFI chief, fellow Olympian Bajrang Punia returned his Padma Shri in protest.

The star wrestlers earlier led a protest by wrestlers who came out against Brij Bhushan, accusing him of sexual harassment.

"This announcement is hasty, without giving sufficient notice to wrestlers who are to take part in the said nationals and without following the provisions of the WFI constitution. As per clause 3 (e) of the preamble of the constitution of the WFI, the object of the WFI, among others, is to arrange the holding of senior, junior and sub junior national championships as per UWW rules at places selected by the Executive Committee," the Sports Ministry stated in a release on Sunday.

"Such decisions are to be taken by the Executive Committee, before which agendas are required to be placed for consideration. As per Article XI of the WFI constitution under the Heading 'Notices and Quorum for Meetings', the minimum notice period for EC meetings is 15 clear days and the quorum is of 1/3rd of representatives. Even for Emergency EC meetings, the minimum notice period is 7 clear days with a quorum requirement of 1/3rd of representatives," the ministry added.

"Further, in terms of Article X (d) of the Constitution of WFI, it is the Secretary General of WFI, who has been made responsible for carrying out the general business of the Federation, keeping the minutes of the meetings, maintaining all the records of the Federation, and calling the meetings of the General Council and the Executive Committee. It seems the Secretary-General has not been involved in the said meeting of EC, which was held without any notice or quorum," it stated further.

"The decisions made by the newly elected executive body of the WFI demonstrate a blatant disregard for the established legal and procedural norms, violating both the WFI's constitutional provisions and the National Sports Development Code. The newly elected body appeared to be in complete control of former office bearers in complete disregard for the Sports Code. The business of the Federation is being run from the premises controlled by former office bearers," the ministry added.

Serie A: Dusan Vlahovic Fires Juventus One Point Behind Leaders Inter Milan

Dusan Vlahovic shot Juventus to within one point of Serie A leaders Inter Milan with the decisive strike in Saturday's 2-1 win at Frosinone, as Lewis Ferguson kept high-flying Bologna in the Champions League positions. Serbia forward Vlahovic headed home the winner with nine minutes remaining at the Stadio Benito Stirpe after Jaime Baez had equalised for the hosts following Kenan Yildiz's opener early in his first Juve start. Massimiliano Allegri's side now await the result of Inter's home clash with Lecce, which Inter have to face without injured star striker Lautaro Martinez and Italy left-back Federico Dimarco.

Vlahovic, who has had a tricky season, is on six league goals and was unlucky to end the match without a brace when his precision 89th-minute strike was ruled out for offside.

"There was the desire to win, to help the team and make the fans happy in that goal," Vlahovic told DAZN.

"A striker is obviously not happy when they don't score, or not consistently, but I work hard every day to give something to the team."

Teen starlet Yildiz become Juve's youngest ever foreign Serie A goalscorer with his stunning near-post finish, which came after he weaved his way past three defenders.

German-born Yildiz, 18, a reported target for Arsenal and Liverpool, came in for injured Federico Chiesa and said he now has to take his teammates out to dinner to celebrate.

"For me, this is too great. Thanks to everyone. To the fans, they are crazy. Look at them!" he said.

The one negative note for Juve was Alex Sandro and Manuel Locatelli both suffering injuries.

Alex Sandro had left the field midway through the first half with cramp, the Brazilian defender has already missed most of the season with a hamstring injury.

Ferguson strikes

It was Frosinone's first defeat at home since they lost to Napoli in the first week of the season. They hammered the Italian champions 4-0 in the Italian Cup in midweek.

Eusebio Di Francesco's side are 14th on 19 points, seven points above the relegation zone.

Scotland's Ferguson thumped home the winning header with four minutes remaining at the Stadio Dall'Ara as Bologna continued their remarkable season with a 1-0 win over Atalanta.

Thiago Motta's side will go into Christmas in fourth, one point ahead of Fiorentina after a hard-fought win, their sixth in a row at home in Serie A.

Ferguson's bullet header was the fourth goal of what has been an impressive second season in Italy for the 24-year-old, who has been a key man for a Bologna team which also knocked out Inter from the Italian Cup midweek.

"It's up there with the most important," said Ferguson of his winner.

And Ferguson, who also has Euro 2024 to look forward to next summer, is bullish about Bologna's chances of Champions League qualification.

"Of course it's possible. It's possible for anyone. But just now we're in a good moment, we're getting the right results," he added.

"We work so hard... everyone is together at the club, and we're all pushing in the same direction. There's a real belief."

Atalanta are now five points behind Bologna in seventh after their seventh defeat of an inconsistent season to date.

Rebecca Welch Becomes First Female Referee In English Premier League

Rebecca Welch became the first woman to referee an English Premier League football match when she blew the whistle on Fulham's game against Burnley at Craven Cottage on Saturday. Welch, a 40-year-old from Washington in northeast England, was working for the National Health Service when she began her refereeing career in 2010. She rose through the officiating ranks and, in 2021, became the first woman appointed to referee a match in the English Football League when she took charge of the fourth-tier fixture between Harrogate and Port Vale.

Welch was also the first female official to referee matches in the Championship and third round of the FA Cup.

Last month she became the first woman to act as fourth official in a Premier League game as part of the officiating team for Fulham's match against Manchester United.

Welch has also taken charge of several high-profile women's fixtures, including games at the 2023 Women's World Cup.

Indian Men's Hockey Team Loses 2-3 Against Germany In 5-Nation Tournament

The Indian men's hockey team's woeful run in the five-nation tournament continued as it lost 2-3 against Germany to slump to its third consecutive defeat on Saturday. Abhishek (9th minute) and Shamsher Singh (14th) found the back of the net for India in the first quarter before the Germans fought back with strikes from Malte Hellwig (28th), Christopher Ruhr (50th) and Gonzalo Peillat (51st). India had earlier lost to Spain (0-1) and Belgium (2-7) respectively. The Indians, though, started on a bright note and raced to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter through goals from Abhishek and Shamsher.

The second quarter was a hard fought one with both teams vying for goals. It was Hellwig who found the back of the net for Germany late in the second quarter as India enjoyed a slender 2-1 lead at half-time.

The third quarter saw India exhibiting a strong display of defence as Germany were awarded two penalty corners but they couldn't convert either of the opportunities.

With the match hanging in the balance, Germany managed to equalise through a penalty stroke from Ruhr.

A minute later, Germany netted another goal to take the lead, courtesy a penalty corner conversion from Peillat.

The Germans, thereafter, defended in numbers to thwart any challenge from the Indians and secure the victory.

India will next play France on Wednesday.

Naveen-Ul-Haq Handed Big Ban From Marquee T20 Event. Here's The Reason

Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq was on Monday handed a 20-month ban from participating in the International League T20 for breaching his Player Agreement with Sharjah Warriors. Naveen had signed up for the Warriors for the opening season of the tournament. He was offered another year's extension but refused to sign the retention notice for Season 2. Sharjah Warriors approached the ILT20 to intervene in this dispute. The ILT20 first initiated a mediation process through an independent third-party mediator. However, the mediation failed.

The ILT20's three-member Disciplinary Committee, which includes the league's Chief Executive Officer David White, Head of Security and Anti-Corruption Col. Azam and Member Emirates Cricket Board Zayed Abbas, separately heard both the parties and on examining the evidence before them conveyed its final verdict of a 20-month ban on Naveen.

"We do not take pride in making this announcement but all parties are expected to comply with their contractual commitments and recognise that non-compliance can cause damage to the other party," CEO DP World ILT20 David White said in a release.

"Unfortunately, Naveen-ul-Haq failed to honour his contractual obligations with the Sharjah Warriors and as such the league had no option but to impose this 20-month ban on him.

"The disciplinary proceedings against Naveen were conducted in a transparent manner and both parties involved were given opportunities to prepare and present their submissions."

Indian Men's Hockey Team Goes Down Against Belgium In 5 Nations Tournament

The Indian men's hockey team produced a listless show to go down 2-7 against Olympic champions Belgium in their second match of the 5 Nations Tournament in Valencia, Spain on Saturday. Abhishek and Jugraj Singh were the two goal scorers for India. The first quarter saw Belgium off the blocks and running in no time scoring three quick goals, courtesy Cedric Charlier (1'), Alexander Hendrickx (10') and Thibeau Stockbroekx (13') to put India on the backfoot. Belgium further extended the lead after another goal from Thibeau Stockbroekx (16') early in the second quarter. Abhishek (18') scored a field goal for India but it was followed by another goal from Tom Boon (26') as India were left trailing 1-5.

Close to the end of the second quarter, Jugraj Singh (27') converted a penalty corner for India as the score read 5-2 in favour of Belgium at half-time.

Harshal Patel Bowls Haryana To Vijay Hazare Trophy Title

Harshal Patel bowled a game-changing spell with the old ball as Haryana beat Rajasthan by 30 runs in a well-contested final to lift the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Saturday. Having scored 287 for 8 in 50 overs, Haryana were given a tough fight by Rajasthan, who were cruising at 201 for 4 with opener Abhijeet Tomar (106 off 129 balls) along with Kunal Singh Rathore (79 off 65 balls) slowly taking the team towards the target. However, Harshal (3/47 in 9 overs) showed his wares by varying the pace of his deliveries in a game changing second five-over spell in which he gave away only 16 runs but picked both set batters to snuff out any chance that Rajasthan had. They were all-out for 257 in 48 overs.

No praise is enough for all-rounder Sumit Kumar (3/34 in 6 overs), who ran through Rajasthan top-order after scoring a quickfire 28 not out off 16 balls and also took a blinder inside the circle to win the 'Player of Match' as well as 'Player of Series'.

He scored 183 runs in lower-order at over 100 strike-rate and took 18 wickets in 10 games.

Credit must also be given to Haryana skipper Ashok Menaria, who had a good game with the bat and then marshalled his resources well, including bringing in Harshal, which turned out to be master-stroke.

Menaria, who had once been a Rajasthan skipper, didn't indulge in any overt celebrations, after leading his adopted state to first senior national trophy in 32 years (after Ranji Trophy 1991).

At the start of the innings, all-rounder Sumit Kumar, who opens the bowling, was lethal in his first spell as Rajasthan were quickly reduced to 12 for 3, which included wickets of two IPL regulars in Mahipal Lomror (2) and skipper Deepak Hooda (0).

However, opener Tomar did found an ally in Karan Lamba (20) as they added 68 runs for the fourth wicket but Haryana still had the upper-hand when the latter was dismissed.

But it was left-hander Kunal Singh Rathore, who smashed 79 off 65 balls, with some mighty heaves on the on-side to keep them in the hunt. He added 121 with Tomar and dominated the stand with five maximums.

But once he started developing cramps and when Harshal came back for his second spell, things changed. Tomar failed to clear Sumit while trying to loft the seamer over mid-off, while Rathore was holed out in the deep at long-off.

Earlier, after opting to bat, it was in-form Ankit Kumar (88 off 91 balls) and his veteran skipper Ashok Menaria (70 off 96 balls), who put up 124 for the third wicket to lay the foundation for a competitive score.

Ankit, who had hit a century in the quarter-final against Bengal, was once again in his element, hitting 12 crisp boundaries and a six off Ajay Singh Kukna.

Menaria, on the other hand, was patient as he hit eight fours, which also included some drives through on-side.

It was all-rounders Nishant Sindhu (29 off 22 balls), Rahul Tewatia (24 off 18 balls) and Sumit Kumar (28 off 16 balls), all of whom used long handle to good effect to take Haryana pass the 285-run mark.

Save veteran left-arm seamer Aniket Chaudhary (4/49 in 10 overs), the only other bowler, who impressed was out of favour leg-spinner Rahul Chahar (1/39 in 9 overs).

Brief Scores: Haryana 287/8 (Ankit Kumar 88, Ashok Menaria 70, Aniket Chaudhary 4/49) beat Rajasthan 257 in 48 overs (Abhijit Tomar 106, Kunal Singh Rathore 79, Harshal Patel 3/49, Sumit Kumar 3/34). PTI KHS KHS ATK ATK

IPL 2024: Debutant Gerald Coetzee In The Big Leagues

Gerald Coetzee is all set to make his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in 2024. The South African had been a talisman for his side in the 2023 ODI World Cup, rattling sides with his raw pace. He has the ability to pick up regular wickets and surprise batters with his bouncers. Many franchises are still looking to bolster their pace attack, particularly with genuinely fast bowlers. This ensures that Coetzee will be a franchise favourite at the mini-auction. Coetzee knows his value in a competitive tournament like the IPL. He has set his base price in the highest possible price bracket of Rs 2 crore in just his debut season.

Raw pace with discipline

Coetzee's pace is only second to his aggressive celebrations on the field. Not one to shy away from showing emotions, Coetzee wears his heart on his sleeve. He is a genuine wicket-taker. This often prompted skipper Temba Bavuma to bring him on in the middle overs to get a breakthrough when the game was cruising along in the opposition's favour. Coetzee delivered on most occasions, breaking vital partnerships.

The energetic South African can bowl consistently above 145 kmph. He can also bend his back to extract extra bounce off the pitch. This makes him a dangerous bowler to face even when the pitch doesn't offer much to the fast bowlers.

International debut

Coetzee was one of the finds of the year for South Africa. The young pacer was brought into a team known for producing fast-bowling legends like Allan Donald, Shaun Pollock and Dale Steyn. He was replacing one of the team's most lethal pacers, Anrich Nortje. South Africa had a well-rounded pace attack and Nortje's absence looked like it could upset the balance of the side. Coetzee did not allow this to happen.

The pressure was on from the start of his international career and he delivered on the biggest stage picking up three wickets in his Test debut. This earned him a white-ball call-up as well in the same series. There he finished with figures of 2/53 on a pitch where the pacers were taken to the cleaners.

His impressive performances earned him a spot in the team's playing eleven at the World Cup. This is where he truly came into his own, ending the tournament with 20 wickets to his name. He even surpassed experienced pacers from his side like Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi to emerge as the team's most successful bowler in the tournament.

T20I record

Coetzee has played four T20I matches so far and has six wickets to his name. He is yet to make a mark for the team in the shortest format of the game. However, he has been improving. In his T20I debut series against Australia, he has just three wickets to his name in as many matches. He even proved to be expensive, consistently going for above 10 runs an over.

In the recent home series against India, Coetzee picked up three wickets to halt the visitors' momentum. He bowled in the right areas in the death overs to keep the Indian team from getting to an overwhelming score.

Franchises will keep a keen eye on his performance in the final T20I to see how well he adapts to the format.

Teams that could target Gerald Coetzee

Mumbai Indians will be keen to add Gerald Coetzee to their ranks as a partner for Jasprit Bumrah. The team is left depleted with the exit of Jofra Archer, who they had heavily invested in. Bumrah can dry up the runs while Coetzee's wicket-taking ability will make him the perfect aggressor from the other end.

Coetzee's association with the Super Kings franchises in other leagues will also make him one of the front runners to be picked up by the Chennai Super Kings. They struggled with injuries to their key fast-bowling personnel last season. They will also look to add some young blood to their side, making Coetzee a perfect fit.

Royal Challengers Bangalore is another side that has a depleted pace attack this season. Releasing Josh Hazelwood has left them on the lookout for a replacement. The strong batting lineup needs a good bowling unit to back them up. Expect them to go big on Coetzee.

India Star Slams Powerful Shot vs SA, Falls To Rare Dismissal Because...

The Indian cricket team batters came out all guns blazing in the third and final T20I against South Africa in Johannesburg on Sunday. With South Africa winning the second T20I and the first T20I being washed away, the match was a do-or-die one for the Suryakumar Yadav-led side. And they played with an attacking intent.  Captain Suryakumar Yadav struck a magnificent 100 off just 56 balls as India posted 201 for 7. Suryakumar struck seven fours and eight sixes for his 100 -- his fourth T20I century -- after India were invited to bat first.

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made 60 off 41 balls. For South Africa, spinner Keshav Maharaj and pacer Lizaad Williams took two wickets apiece while Tabraiz Shamsi got one.The match also witnessed a strange incident in the last over. On the penultimate ball of the innings, India's Jitesh Sharma hit a boundary off Lizaad Williams but, however, to everyone's surprise was given out as he had stepped on to the stumps to be hit wickets.

Meanwhile, India's explosive batter Suryakumar Yadav has extended his lead at the summit of the ICC T20I batter rankings following his quick-fire half-century against South Africa in the second T20I clash.

The right-handed batter smashed 56 in just 36 balls in a losing cause as the 'Men in Blue' fell short in the exciting clash in Gqeberha on Tuesday.

According to the latest rankings released by ICC on Wednesday, the attacking batter gained a total of 10 rating points which has further increased his lead as the No.1 ranked batter in the shortest format of cricket.

His latest exploits took his total to 865 rating points, which takes him way ahead of his nearest rivals in Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan (787 rating points) and South Africa's Aiden Markram (758).

Surya became the top T20I batter during the last edition of the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022.
