VAR For Disputed PSG Champions League Penalty Stood Down By UEFA

The VAR official at the centre of a controversial penalty award in Paris Saint-Germain's 1-1 Champions League draw with Newcastle United has been removed from duty by UEFA for a game on Wednesday, European football's governing body told AFP. Poland's Tomasz Kwiatkowski was due to be the Video Assistant Referee at Wednesday's Champions League Group D match between Real Sociedad and Red Bull Salzburg in Spain, but will not now be involved.

His replacement comes after Kylian Mbappe scored a penalty eight minutes into injury time to earn PSG a point against Newcastle in Paris on Tuesday, a result that deprived the English side of a famous victory and leaves them on the brink of a group-stage exit.

Newcastle were leading 1-0 when on-field referee Szymon Marciniak was called by his Polish compatriot Kwiatkowski to come across and review images of a handball in the box by Tino Livramento.

A penalty was given, despite the offence appearing questionable and a similar handball claim against Newcastle's Lewis Miley being dismissed earlier in the second half.

The English club's manager, Eddie Howe, called the penalty award "a poor decision" when speaking after the game.

Karthik Slams Fifty As Tamil Nadu Beat Baroda In Vijay Hazare Trophy Clash

Veteran Dinesh Karthik was back at his vintage best to smash a quickfire half-century as Tamil Nadu overcame a jittery start to down Baroda by 38 runs in a low-scoring group E match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy domestic one-dayers, in Mumbai on Wednesday. Put in, Tamil Nadu were reeling at 52/5 when the skipper dig in with all his experience to rescue the team with a 51-ball 68 featuring nine fours and two sixes for his 40th List A fifty.

Tamil Nadu were soon reduced to 52/6, but Karthik held fort and put together a 75-run partnership with Shahrukh Khan (31; 39b) to help them go past 150.

Lukman Meriwala (4/21 from 7 overs) and Ninad Rathva (3/23 from 7.3 overs) were the pick of the bowlers for Baroda as Tamil Nadu's innings lasted just 33.3 overs.

In reply, Baroda were shot out for 124 in 23.3 overs with T Natarajan leading the charge in his 7-1-38-4, while spin twins Varun Chakravarthy and R Sai Kishore sharing five wickets between them.

Padikkal on song

Karnataka batter Devdutt Padikkal continued with his silken touch in the format, scoring a 57-ball 93 not out to steer them to a seven-wicket win over Bihar in a group C contest at Ahmedabad.

Batting at No 4, Padikkal hit nine boundaries and five sixes as Karnataka made short work of Bihar, chasing down the 218-target in just 33.4 overs.

This was the India A batter's fourth fifty-plus score in as many matches and he also has a century to his name to be the leading rungetter of the meet.

Openers Mayank Agarwal (28) and Ravikumar Samarth (4) got out cheaply but Padikkal and Nikin Jose (69) effortlessly took their team over the line.

Jagadeesha Suchith was the pick of their bowling as he returned with a tidy 10-2-27-3 as Bihar were restricted to 217/7 after Karnataka skipper Agarwal opted to bowl.

Sakibul Gani waged a lone battle for Bihar with a 100-ball 113 not out as wickets kept on falling around him.

Shashank slams 152, grabs five-for

Shashank Singh produced a spectacular all-round effort —152 (113b) and 5/20 in five overs — as Chhattisgarh thrashed Manipur by 88 runs in a group B match at Jaipur.

Chhattisgarh lost their top three for only 16 inside nine overs after Manipur chose to bowl, but thereafter it was all about their No 5 batter Shashank who smashed 12 fours and seven sixes in his counter-attacking knock.

Skipper Amandeep Khare (88) also provided a fine support as the duo consolidated after the anxious start.

After the pair's departure, Ajay Mandal (43 not out; 20b) propped them to an imposing 342/6.

Shashank returned to shine with the ball, grabbing a five-wicket haul as Manipur managed 254/9.

Samson flops again but Kerala win

Sanju Samson failed with the bat yet again as he was dismissed for a five-ball one, but Kerala had it easy in defeating Tripura by 119 runs in a group A clash at Alur.

Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammed Azharuddeen top-scored for Kerala with a 61-ball 58 as he, along with Rohan Kunnummal (44; 70b), gave Kerala a strong start with a 95-run opening alliance.

But Kerala suffered a middle-order collapse to be bowled out for 231 in 47.1 overs. In reply, Tripura folded for 112. Akhin Sathar, Akhil Scaria and Vaisakh Chandran took eight wickets between them.

J&K stun Delhi

Jammu and Kashmir's new ball bowler Rasikh Salam (4/23) dismantled Delhi's top order to complement opener Shubham Khajuria's splendid 109 as they stunned Delhi by 75 runs in another group C clash at Ahmedabad.

PCB Unwilling To Grant NOC To WC Star, BBL Participation Delayed

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to delay the No-Objection Certificate (NOC) of pacer Haris Rauf for his participation in the Big Bash League (BBL). Rauf's NOC certificate is likely to be delayed till December 11, four days after the start of the league. However, there is no confirmation that the NOC will be issued to the pacer immediately after, according to a report by ESPNcricinfo. The PCB wants the 30-year-old pacer to take part in the National T20 Cup in Pakistan, which will end on December 10, for which the apex body of the 'Men in Green' is holding the NOC certificate of the fast bowler, as per ESPNcricinfo.

Recently, Pakistan chief selector Wahab Riaz attacked speedster Haris Rauf for backing out from the forthcoming Australia Tests and said that it would hurt the 'Men in Green'.

While announcing the 18-member squad of Pakistan for their tour of Australia, the chief selector revealed that Rauf agreed to play Test cricket but later changed his mind.

"We spoke to Haris Rauf for this tour. When we spoke to him two days ago, he gave his consent to play Test cricket for Pakistan. But last night he changed his mind, and now he doesn't want to be part of this Test series. I'm revealing this because we should be honest with officials, teammates, and the public. We spoke to Haris and he was worried about his body and fitness, as well as his workload. Mohammad Hafeez and I sat with him and tried to facilitate him in every way. We told him even if he didn't perform well there, we would accept it," Wahab said earlier.

In the ODI World Cup 2023, Rauf failed to put up a quality performance. He played nine matches and scalped 16 wickets. However, he gave away 533 runs and had an economy rate of 6.74.

India Star Says "Can't Help It" After Lack Of Playing Time In World Cup

Team India went 2-0 up in a five-match series against Australia on Sunday as the Suryakumar Yadav-led side registered a 44-run win in Thiruvananthapuram. After being put into bat by Australia captain Matthew Wade, India's top-3 batters -- Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan -- all scored half-centuries, propelling India to a mammoth score of 235/4. Jaiswal smashed a 24-ball half-century before Gaikwad (58) and Kishan (52) also crossed the 50-run mark.

After Jaiswal dismissal, Kishan took the mantle of power-hitting, reaching his half-century in just 29 balls.

Kishan is one of the three members in the team for the ongoing series who were part of the World Cup squad, along with captain Suryakumar and Shreyas Iyer, who will join the side for the last two matches.

Having played just two matches during the entire tournament, Kishan lift the lid on India's World Cup final defeat. He said it was important for him to remain fresh despite not playing regularly.

"It is all hunger, when you are not a part of a great team. We played like champions at the World Cup. I was feeling bad, but you can't help it. In international cricket, times will come when you will not play but at the same time, you will have to be fresh. You will have to make it count when the time comes. When the opportunity comes, you will have to go for it," Kishan said on Jio Cinema.

Kishan played India's World Cup-opener against Australia and a game against Afghanistan, registering scores of 0 and 47, respectively.

After near-flawless batting performance in back-to-back games, the new-look Indian team would like to keep its foot firmly on the pedal in Guwahati, a venue that has traditionally been a batting belter. And there is no reason to think that the 22-yard strip is any different this time also.

The 40,000 spectators, expected to fill up the stands, would expect a run-feast from the talented Indian batting unit, which would want to add to the 36 boundaries and 24 maximums it has collectively hit across the two games.

For Australia, some of their senior players like Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa have been in India for nine weeks and fatigue is showing. They need considerable rest before their next assignments.

All the four will play in Big Bash League next month. For Smith, the Pakistan Test series would be his next international assignment.

IPL 2024: RCB's Shahbaz Ahmed, SRH's Mayank Dagar Swap Franchises - Report

Indian all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed is likely to represent Sunrisers Hyderabad in the upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL) next year while spin bowling all-rounder Mayank Dagar will be representing the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) next season. As per ESPNCricinfo, both teams swapped players via a pre-auction trade. Dagar, who represents Himachal Pradesh, played three games for SRH last year and was brought for Rs 1.8 crore before IPL 2023. He took just one wicket that season. Mayank has taken 55 wickets in 54 T20Is overall.

Shahbaz was secured for Rs 2.4 crore before IPL 2022. Shahbaz has scored 321 runs in 39 matches of his IPL career at an average of almost 17 while also taking 14 wickets. He has also played three ODIs and two ODIs for India. 2022 was Shahbaz's most prolific IPL season, in which he scored 219 runs in 16 matches at an average of over 27, with four wickets under his belt as well.

In 81 T20Is, Shahbaz has scored 834 runs at an average of 22.54, with two half-centuries and best score of 60*. He has also taken 54 wickets in the shortest format of the sport.

Both SRH and RCB will be heading into the new season with a new management. RCB, who narrowly missed out on playoffs by finishing sixth with seven wins in 14 matches, will be having Andy Flower as their new head coach. On the other hand, SRH will have New Zealand legend Daniel Vettori as their head coach, after finishing at the bottom last season with just four wins in 14 games.

"Learning How To Finish Games From Rinku Singh": India Cricket Teammate

Tilak Varma attained IPL stardom one season before Rinku Singh but the Hyderabad youngster wants to learn the art of finishing close T20 games from his national teammate, who is showing glimpses of his immense potential at the international level. Rinku, the KKR left-hander, hailing from UP's Aligarh, has made a name for himself at the franchise level for finishing games and is showing the same temperament at the international level.

Although his winning hit for a six was not counted due to the no-ball bowled by Nathan Ellis in the first T20 International where India beat Australia by two wickets, Rinku's composure while batting in the death overs has found appreciation from everyone.

"I am learning how to finish games from Rinku as he is doing it consistently for India. I also want to do and hopefully in coming matches I will be doing that," Tilak said ahead of India's second T20 International in the five-match series.

Tilak, who is also a southpaw like Rinku, has already made an impression in the 11 T20Is he has played for the country, with two half-centuries and a strike-rate of 140-plus to his credit.

"There is no pressure of expectation on me. I just have a role and I have to fulfil that role for the team. My role at No. 5 is, if it's in my arc, I will go for it or else just rotate strike," said Tilak.

He then explained what he was asked to do in the last game.

"Last match, in that situation a leg-spinner was bowling, I wanted to take charge as we needed 10 per over in that situation, so it was decided I will go at the leg-spinner and for fast bowler, settled batsman Surya bhai was batting," he said.

While his main aim is to remain consistent, Tilak also said that he hasn't worked on any specific areas during the time the senior team was busy playing the ODI World Cup.

"Before this series, I played in the Mushtaq Ali Trophy and my performance was good and I was confident, so I haven't worked in any specific areas but aim is to continue the good form," said Tilak, who was his team's top run-getter with 288 runs at a healthy strike-rate of 143, which also included a hundred and a fifty.

There is a certain amount of comfort level that Tilak enjoys while playing under Suryakumar Yadav and he enjoyed his skipper's performance (80 off 42 balls) in the opening ODI.

"I have already played under Suryakumar Yadav. In IPL, he captained one match for Mumbai Indians. He is very calm and clear in his thoughts, he did very good captaincy and in the last match, played in tough situation, he managed well," Tilak further added.

There is a leadership streak in Tilak and he doesn't mind slipping in a suggestion or two for senior captains like Rohit Sharma or Surya.

"All 11 members need to be involved, every player gets thoughts and passes it on and it rests on the captain, which suggestions he wants to take." Asked how the team is looking at Sunday's second T20I, and also if it's payback time for the Aussies for defeating India in the World Cup final, Tilak answered in the negative.

"We just want to go with the flow and take it one game at a time," he concluded.

"Imad Wasim should withdraw his retirement decision, Pakistan team's best spin bowler is Imad and can help a lot in batting. In the World Cup, if the most effective player of the team will not be there, it is not a loss for Imad, it is a loss for Pakistan. Mohammad Hafeez wants them to bring Imad back. If you want to play leagues, then separate from the central contract, but keep yourself available for the Pakistan team," Rashid wrote on X.

Wasim made 55 ODIs and 66 T20I appearances for Pakistan and amassed 1472 runs in total claiming 109 wickets.

He played his final international match against New Zealand earlier this year in a T20I game where he played a rapid-fire knock of 31 in just 14 balls and picked two wickets. He was also part of Pakistan's Champions Trophy-winning side in 2017.

Wasim shared a heartfelt note to announce his retirement thanking the PCB as well as the fans for the support that they showed him throughout his career.

"In recent days I have been doing a lot of thinking about my international career and I have come to the conclusion that now is the right time for me to announce my retirement from international cricket," he said in a statement.

"I would like to thank the PCB for all their support over the years - it has truly been an honour to represent Pakistan. Thank you to the Pakistan fans for always supporting me with such passion. A final thank you to my family and friends who have been so important in helping me achieve at the highest level. I now look forward to focussing on the next stage of my playing career away from the international stage," Wasim added.

Rahul Dravid and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) top brass engaged in an in-depth talk about the possibilities surrounding his role as head coach with the board inclined to hand over the reins of the team to a new person keeping the T20 World Cup 2024 in mind. The person that board has in mind is VVS Laxman, the NCA Director. Dravid's two-year contract as India's head coach ended with the recent World Cup final in which Rohit Sharma's band suffered a heart-breaking six-wicket defeat to Australia.

Since then, Dravid's future as the back-room helmsman of the Indian cricket team has been constantly debated.

"Rahul and the BCCI had a talk about where things stand now. We will respect the decision taken by him. The general feeling is that with the T20 World Cup about 7-8 months away, there is time for a new coach to come in and build a team and set a process. He (Dravid) is quite aware of that," a BCCI official close to the development told PTI on condition of anonymity.

However, the official said a decision will be reached only after thoroughly thinking about all angles.

"We are also talking about whether continuity (current coach/captain combination) is needed for the (T20) WC. We are hoping to reach a decision soon so that path forward is clear," he added.

It is also understood that the board is quite happy with the way Dravid has managed the team along with captain Rohit over the last two years despite not landing any global trophies The pair has guided India to the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia and finals of the World Test Championship 2023 in England and the 50-over World Cup at home.

However, India won the Asia Cup beating Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in Colombo in September under their regime.

The official hinted that all the stakeholders involved including Rohit, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and a few other higher BCCI office-bearers will sit together soon to arrive at a final call.

VVS Laxman, the current NCA chief, is tipped to succeed Dravid as India head coach, and the official said they have kept their options open.

"Options are open (for head coach). He (Laxman) is familiar with the team, players and the methods. He also has experience working with the national team," he explained.

Laxman is currently with the Indian team as head coach for the five-match T20I series against Australia, and the former Indian batter has often stepped in for Dravid in the past whenever the latter was given a rest.

Shooter Anish Bhanwala Wins 25m Rapid Fire Bronze In World Cup Final

Young pistol shooter Anish Bhanwala on Friday won India's first ever medal in 25m rapid-fire pistol event in the ISSF World Cup Final as he bagged a bronze in the prestigious competition in Doha. The 21-year-old Anish shot 27 in the final to win the bronze. World championship bronze medallist Peter Florian of Germany took the gold with 35 hits while reigning world champion and double Olympic medallist Li Yuehong of China was second with 33 hits after eight series of five rapid-fire shots.

The medal in the season-ending competition capped a momentous year for the 21-year-old, who won a first ever senior individual ISSF World Cup stage medal and a first senior Asian Championships medal and a Paris Olympic quota place.

However, Anish, who was India's final start at the Doha World Cup Final, barely made it to the six-man final. His qualification score of 581 was just enough to pip German ace Christian Reitz to seventh.

But with all three Baku World Championship medallists in the final, the Haryana lad had his work cut out.

Florian blasted four perfect fives to start with and then had another five in the seventh series, which was enough to give him the gold.

Yuehong also had four perfect series of five hits and a couple of fours, which ensured that his score of two in the seventh series did not deny him a medal lesser than silver.

Anish, on the other hand, did well to keep pace with the high level of shooting all around, blasting two fives for his third and fourth series to go with three series of four-hits.

Chinese Jueming Zhang was the first to be eliminated with 12 hits in the first four series. He was followed by Clement Bessaguet who had 18 after five.

Czech Matej Rampula wilted with a no-hit in the sixth series, which ensured a medal for Anish.

The Indian was two behind the Chinese world champion Yuehong when he bowed out after the seventh series.

Why Was Rinku Singh's Last-Ball Six vs Australia Not Counted - Explained

India started the T20I series against Australia in some style as they notched a two-wicket win on Thursday. There was no shortage of thrill in the match. Courtesy Josh Inglis' 110, Australia notched a huge total of 208/3 in 20 overs. In reply, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan hit half-centuries as India cruised towards the target. However, both got out and it was left to Rinku Singh to take India over the line as India needed seven runs off six balls. 

More drama ensued as India lost the wickets of Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi and Arshdeep Singh in the last over by Sean Abbott to go eight down. With India needing one off one ball, Rinku Singh hit a huge six to take India to win. However, the six was not counted and there was confusion over India's final score. The umpires then adjudged the delivery as no-ball. Since it was a no-ball, and India had got the required one run and had already won by its courtesy. Hence, the six was not counted. India ended on 209/8 in 19.5 overs.

Half-centuries by Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan helped India secure a two-wicket win over Australia in the first T20I of a five-match series at Visakhapatnam on Thursday.

This is India's highest T20I run-chase, outdoing chase of 208 against West Indies back in 2019.

India is 1-0 up in the series.

In the chase of 209, India started off well with Yashasvi Jaiswal hitting a four and six in the first over, but a miscommunication with Ruturaj Gaikwad ran out the latter for zero. India was 11/1 in 0.5 overs.

Jaiswal looked to up the attack in the next over, but Matthew Short got his first T20I wicket, removing Jaiswal for 21 off 8 balls, with two fours and two sixes. India was 22/2 in 2.3 overs.

Ishan and Suryakumar Yadav, the skipper were the fresh pair. After a brief lull, they both started hitting shots. Pacer Sean Abbott went for 20 runs in the fifth over and was hit for a four and two sixes.

India reached the 50-run mark in 4.5 overs.

At the end of the powerplay, India was 63/2, with Suryakumar (26*) and Ishan (14*) unbeaten.

The ninth over pulled India back in the game big time, with young spinner Tanveer Sangha hit for two sixes and a four by Ishan. India reached the 100-run mark in 9.1 overs.

Halfway through the innings, India was 106/2, with Suryakumar (39*) and Suryakumar (40*) unbeaten.

Ishan reached his half-century, his fourth in T20Is in just 37 balls, with two fours and four sixes. The left-hander attempted to punish Sangha with a four and six. However, a third attempt to clear the ropes was caught by Short. Ishan walked back for 58 off 39 balls, with two fours and five sixes. India was 134/3 in 12.3 overs.

India reached the 150-run mark in 14.2 overs.

Tilak played some good shots but lost his wicket to Sangha after being caught by Stoinis at extra cover for 12. India was 154/4 in 14.5 overs.

A knuckle ball was delivered by Jason Behrendorff and Suryakumar skied it, got caught by Aaron Hardie. Surya went back for 80 off 42 balls, with nine fours and four sixes. India was 194/5 in 17.4 overs.

India reached the 200-run mark in 18.5 overs with the help of a four from Rinku Singh.

India's Wait For ICC Trophy Continues As Australia Clinch 6th ODI WC Title

India's dreams of winning a third World Cup title lay in tatters after an inexplicable meltdown saw them crash to a six-wicket defeat against an indefatigable Australia here on Sunday, plunging the cricket-obsessed country into deep mourning. Australia thus won a record-extending sixth World Cup title, stretching their dominance in the tournament that started way back in 1975. Put in to bat, India ended up with a below-par 240 despite contributions from Rohit Sharma (47 off 31 balls), Virat Kohli (54 off 63) and K L Rahul (66 off 107).

Just like his performance in the WTC final against India in June, Travis Head made a match-winning 137 off 120 balls as Australia chased down the target in 43 overs.

Indian hopes were raised when Australia lost three wickets for 47 but a 192-run partnership between Head and Marnus Labuschagne (58 not out) shut the door on the opposition.

ATP Finals: Bopanna-Ebden Crash Out In Semifinals Of Men's Doubles

The ATP Finals campaign of Indian tennis veteran Rohan Bopanna and Australian Matthew Ebden in men's doubles competition concluded in the semifinals after a loss to Spain's Marcel Granollers and Argentina's Horacio Zeballos in Turin, Italy on Saturday. In less than two hours, the third-seeded Indian-Australian team lost 7-6, 6-4 to the fifth-seeded 2023 Wimbledon finalists in Turin. The match took place on the hard courts of the Pala Alpitour. For the first seven games, both couples easily held their serves. In the eighth game, Bopanna and Ebden had a break-point opportunity, but the Australian made an unforced error, tying the score at 4-4. In the eleventh game, Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos took advantage of a few of the double faults by Ebden to gain the early lead, hold their service, and eventually take the break.

The second set began with the seemingly flawless 43-year-old Rohan Bopanna maintaining his serve on love. Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos had taken the lead in the second set thanks to a couple of double faults committed by Ebden in the third game, which proved to be decisive.

Bopanna and Ebden subsequently lost in the semi-finals because they were unable to break their opponents in the remaining portion of the set.

Bopanna had previously participated in the ATP Finals three times, in 2011, 2012 and 2015-2016. The Indian tennis player lost in the finals in both 2012 and 2015, the first time around with fellow countryman Mahesh Bhupathi and the second time around with Florin Mergea of Romania. To date, no Indian has taken home the ATP Finals trophy.

Bopanna made history earlier in Turin when he became the oldest player to advance to the ATP Finals semi-finals. With Ebden, Bopanna also defeated the winners of the Australian Open, Rinky Hijikata-Jason Kubler, and the defending Wimbledon champions, Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski, in straight sets.

Bopanna also enjoyed a fantastic 2023 campaign. He and Matthew Ebden won the Indian Wells doubles event, becoming him the oldest tennis player in history to win an ATP Masters 1000 championship.

After the Indian and Ebden reached the championship match of the US Open 2023 men's doubles competition, Bopanna also became the oldest person to reach a Grand Slam final.

KL The Keeper: How 'Dhoni' Review System' Became Decision 'Rahul' System

There was an Instagram reel by a social media influencer that went viral last year, when the interviewee was asked to decipher an incomplete footage of a DRS call. Without having a look, he says "out hai sir" and then asks the interviewer to shift the focus of the photo and there stood Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind, taking another immaculate call in what has come to be known as the 'Dhoni' Review System (DRS). But in this World Cup, it won't be a misnomer if KL Rahul gets the DRS moniker in his name and we call it the 'Decision 'Rahul' System'.

At least on five occasions over the course of the World Cup, the Indian wicket-keeper prevented an excited bowler or his skipper from raising a 'T' for the umpire.

A lot of moving parts have come together in the tournament and one of the important cogs in the wheel is Rahul, whose 386 runs at near 99 strike-rate and 77 average has slipped under the radar because of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami's brilliance but he has been that calming influence which is a pre-requisite of every team.

Magnificent when in full flow and completely lousy other times, a picture of calm when in form but ready to play a dishevelled stroke now and then, Rahul has been an enigma in Indian cricket for close to a decade.

For someone with Test centuries in Sydney, Lord's and Centurion, a man of his calibre could be termed an "under-achiever" as he is no less compared to a Rohit or Kohli, when it comes to the talent quotient.

But between spells of brilliance, there has been those lulls which, also by his own admission, let self doubts creep in but in this World Cup, if anyone has been a symbol of assurance, it is Rahul, the keeper.

That catch to dismiss Devon Conway in the semi-final, would have certainly warmed the cockles of Mahendra Singh Dhoni's heart.

With 16 dismissals in 10 games (15 catches and 1 stumping), he is second only to Quinton de Kock, a specialist keeper.

For someone, who wasn't a regular keeper till a few years back, this effort has been phenomenal. What has also stood out is Rahul's judgement of DRS calls.

The reason for that is his perfect footwork behind the stumps as he has a perfect idea of where the ball finishes, says former India keeper Deep Dasgupta.

"DRS is not just a wicketkeeper's call only. The wicketkeeper can neither gauge the impact nor the height. The impact (whether pitched within stumps) is generally a bowler's call or the skipper standing at mid-on or mid-off.

"The guy stationed adjacent to square leg umpire needs to check the height while the keeper with his movement would get an idea where the ball finishes," Dasgupta explained the whole process.

From the looks of it, Rohit might not come across like that but he is way more process-oriented than a Kohli when it comes to DRS calls.

What has helped has been Rahul's presence behind the stumps as he could dissuade the bowler because of his perfect concept of where the ball could finally finish.

While Dhoni was the master of getting his DRS calls right, Dasgupta gave an interesting insight into how the legendary Indian skipper had such a high percentage of correct decisions.

"If you check the numbers, most of Dhoni's DRS calls has gone with Umpires' Call. So when India didn't get a decision, they at least kept the review. There would never be any outrageous calls. Same with Rahul. He is someone who could temper an enthusiastic bowler's expectations," Dasgupta.

Rahul's glovework has been as good as anyone and technique of letting the ball come and 'literally melt' into his gloves has been a perfect sight for the lovers of the game.

And for someone, who is not keeping Kuldeep Yadav regularly, it has been quite impressive to see how he has picked the left-arm wrist spinner from his hand and adjusted his footwork accordingly.

Dasgupta, who has been working as a broadcaster, had a chance to interact with Rahul and he felt that mentally, he thinks as a keeper and that has made a world of difference to his keeping.

"He told me during one of the interactions that he doesn't see himself as a part-time keeper and looks at himself as a keeper-batter," Dasgupta said.

It is an interesting how the shift in mindset has made the difference.

Now for people on the outside, Rahul is still specialist batter, who is keeping. So even if he is making a mistake he would never lose the war of perception and fans would be way more forgiving than what they would be if Ishan Kishan, a specialist keeper, makes the same mistake.

Rahul, indeed, has been keeper of India's fortunes.

India star batter Virat Kohli slammed his 50th ODI century on Wednesday to script a new all-time record. During the Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-final clash against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the right-handed batter scored a century to achieve the milestone. With it, Kohli also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's previous world record of 49 ODI centuries. After crossing the 100-run mark, Kohli bowed down to Tendulkar, who was sitting in the stands. This shows the nature and character of Virat Kohli," Kaif told Star Sports.

"He's a big player himself, but being a good human and giving due respect to his masters shows how disciplined he is. Also what makes this knock memorable is the stage on which he's got it. There were conversations that his record in knockouts is not great, but he's answered everyone by scoring a century, and ensuring that India qualifies for the finals," the former India cricketer added.

Man Who Accused Pitch Swapping To Oversee Preparations For Final: Report

What will be ICC pitch consultant Andy Atkinson's future was a question floating around as the burly New Zealander was nowhere to be seen during pitch preparation 48 hours ahead of the World Cup final between India and Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. It has been learnt that Atkinson has arrived in Ahmedabad Friday afternoon and he will join the preparations tomorrow. This comes after news agency PTI had reported that Atkinson had left India ahead of the final.

"Andy hasn't gone back home. He has come with ICC delegation today afternoon and hence didn't come to the ground. He will be available tomorrow to check on the preparation of the track," an ICC source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Atkinson isn't exactly a favourite with the BCCI brass after he accused the host nation of changing track for the semi-final between India and New Zealand from a fresh to a used one.

However, the ICC later sent a clarification that there is no such rule of holding knock-out matches on a fresh track and Atkinson was apprised of the development in advance.

On Friday, the two senior BCCI's chief of ground staff Ashish Bhowmick and his second in command Taposh Chatterjee, along with former India seamer and BCCI's GM (Domestic Cricket) Abbey Kuruvilla, closely monitored the pitch preparations for the mega final on Sunday.

It couldn't be confirmed if the track to be used for the final is a used one or a fresh surface. But the two senior curators and BCCI GM monitored the use of heavy roller on the designated 22-yard strip. "If heavy roller is being used on a black soil strip then the idea is to create a slow batting track where you can get a big score but you possibly can't consistently hit through the line. 315 could be a defendable score as batting second will be difficult," a state association curator explained.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, along with first team regulars KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, had an extensive net session, with reserve players Ishan Kishan, Ravichandran Ashwin and Prasidh Krishna for company.

As has been the custom, Rohit and Dravid spent a considerable amount of time looking at the track and also had extensive discussions with Bhowmick and Chatterjee.

Australia Beat South Africa To Set Up Cricket World Cup Final With India

Travis Head starred with bat and ball as Australia set up a World Cup final clash with India after a tense three-wicket win over South Africa in Kolkata on Thursday. Chasing a tricky 213 for victory, Australia wobbled after Head hit 62 but Steve Smith (30) and Josh Inglis (28) helped the five-time champions reach their target with 16 balls to spare in the second semi-final in Kolkata.

"It's hard to unpack all of that. I didn't move for the past couple of hours. It was a tense finish and an amazing game," said Head.

As Australia reached an eighth World Cup final, South Africa were left to rue a fifth semi-final loss despite David Miller's 101.

Australia slipped to 137-5 and then 193-7 before Mitchell Starc (16) and skipper Pat Cummins (14) kept their nerve to steer the team home.

Left-hand batsman and part-time off-spinner Head stood out after taking two wickets and then with his 48-ball innings laced with nine fours and two sixes.

Australia were in trouble when they were five down as spinners Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi struck in quick succession to rattle the middle-order.

Maharaj bowled Head, who was dropped on 40 and 57, and Shamsi, a left-arm wrist spinner, trapped Marnus Labuschagne lbw for 18 and bowled Glenn Maxwell for one in his next over.

Australia started the tournament with two losses but registered their eighth straight win.

"The way we started with the bat and ball was the turning point, we always had to play catch-up," said South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma.

'Ruthless Australia'

"The conditions combined with the quality of the Australia attack. They were ruthless and exploited every bit of advantage, and really put us under pressure."

Starc led the bowling charge with figures of 3-34 and Cummins also picked three wickets to bowl out South Africa for 212 in 49.4 overs.

Left-arm quick Starc struck in the first over to send back Bavuma, who had said he was not "100% fit" at the toss, for a fourth-ball duck.

Josh Hazlewood claimed the wicket of in-form Quinton de Kock for three as Cummins took a stunning catch.

De Kock, who will quit one-day international after the World Cup, ended with 594 runs including four centuries to sit behind the tournament's leading batsman Virat Kohli (711).

The new-ball bowlers kept up the attack with the wickets of Aiden Markram (10) and Rassie van der Dussen (six) as South Africa slumped to 24-4 and were 44-4 when rain interrupted play.

Klaasen and Miller hit back after the 45-minute rain break as the two put on 95 runs but Head broke through to bowl Klaasen for 47.

Head trapped Marco Jansen lbw on the next delivery to be on a hat-trick, which was saved by Gerald Coetzee, who put on a 53-run partnership with Miller.

The left-handed Miller smashed eight fours and five sixes in his 116-ball knock.

The final is on Sunday at the world's biggest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad.

"It feels like a dream. Too good to be true," said Kohli at the innings break after India piled up 397-4.

This was Kohli's 279th ODI innings, with the former India captain having also scored a further 71 fifties in addition to his 50 hundreds.

Dropped on 107, Kohli was eventually out for 117 when he pulled Tim Southee low to Devon Conway at deep square leg.

"For me the most important thing is to make my team win. I've been given a role this tournament and I'm trying to dig deep," added Kohli.

"That's the key to consistency - play according to the situation and play for the team."

Tendulkar, whose previous record of 49 had been equalled by Kohli 10 days ago in the group stage win over South Africa, hailed his compatriot's "passion and skill".

"The first time I met you in the Indian dressing room, you were pranked by other teammates into touching my feet. I couldn't stop laughing that day," Tendulkar wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

"But soon, you touched my heart with your passion and skill. I couldn't be happier that an Indian broke my record. 

"And to do it on the biggest stage - in the World Cup semi-final - and at my home ground is the icing on the cake."

Kohli said he was over-joyed to achieve the record in front of his wife, Anushka Sharma, and Tendulkar 

"Sachin was there in the stands, my hero. My life partner and all these fans at the Wankhede," said Kohli.

India, bidding to win a third World Cup title and second on home soil, were also boosted by Shreyas Iyer's 105 and 80 from Shubman Gill.
