Man City Shocked By Wolves, Manchester United Beaten By Crystal Palace

Manchester City's perfect start to the Premier League season came undone in a shock 2-1 loss to Wolves, as Manchester United slumped to a 1-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday. Arsenal closed to within a point of the lead by cruising to a 4-0 win at Bournemouth, while Aston Villa thrashed Brighton 6-1 to move into the top four. City had won the opening six games of their title defence as they aim to become the first side to ever claim four consecutive English top-flight titles. By contrast, Wolves had taken just four points from their first six games but stunned the champions at Molineux.

Ruben Dias' own goal put the home side in front, but City responded after the break through Julian Alvarez's free-kick.

Wolves, though, were a constant threat on the counter-attack and got their reward when Hwang Hee-chan swept home at the second attempt 25 minutes from time.

"We have to do more but even when we win we have to do more," said City boss Pep Guardiola, who watched the game from the stands due to suspension.

"When we win and lose we do it together. Today we were not at our best."

City's defeat means Liverpool can go top should they end Tottenham's unbeaten Premier League start under Ange Postecoglou in the 1615GMT kick off.

United have now lost four of their opening seven league games of the season to pile more pressure on Erik ten Hag.

Joachim Andersen's stunning first-half volley separated the sides at Old Trafford.

United had won a League Cup meeting between the sides 3-0 in midweek.

But with Palace restored to full strength, the Red Devils suffered from a familiar lack of cutting edge up front as they laboured to get back into the game.

"The final part of the game we didn't play our best game," said Ten Hag.

"You have to be sharp and clinical. It's about decision making."

Defeat sees United slip to 10th in the table.

Arsenal moved up to second as Mikel Arteta's men eased to victory at Bournemouth.

Bukayo Saka had been an injury doubt, but headed into an empty net to open the scoring on his 87th consecutive Premier League appearance.

Saka could have had more had he not then handed over penalty duties.

Martin Odegaard has shared responsibility from the spot with Saka this season and the Norwegian slotted home Arsenal's second before the break.

Both Saka and Odegaard then stood aside to give Kai Havertz the confidence boost of his first goal for the club when the Gunners were awarded a second spot-kick on 53 minutes.

Ben White rounded off the scoring in stoppage time.

Newcastle's recovery from a slow start to the season continues as the Magpies overcame Burnley 2-0.

Miguel Almiron fired into the top corner to open the scoring and Alexander Isak's penalty secured the points 14 minutes from time.

Ollie Watkins bagged a hat-trick in Villa's stunning demolition of Brighton.

Two goals from the England striker and a Pervis Estupinan own goal put Villa 3-0 up inside 26 minutes.

Ansu Fati reduced the deficit with his first Brighton goal.

But the day belonged to Watkins and he became the first Villa player in 47 years to score two hat-tricks in one season.

Jacob Ramsey and Douglas Luiz piled on the pain for Brighton in the closing stages and did enough to edge Villa ahead of the Seagulls on goal difference.

"We are feeling strong here with the supporters, we are connected with them," said Villa boss Unai Emery after a 10th consecutive home Premier League win.

Luton secured their first ever Premier League win with a 2-1 victory at Everton.

Tom Lockyer and Carlton Morris were on target for the Hatters, who climb out of the relegation zone.

Sheffield United remain bottom after the Blades were beaten 2-0 at West Ham with Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio getting the goals for David Moyes' men.

Mirabai To Undergo Tests On October 3 To Find Out Extent Of Thigh Injury

Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu will undergo tests on October 3 in Mumbai to find out the severity of the thigh injury she suffered at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Despite feeling some pain in her thigh during the warm-ups, Chanu went ahead with her six attempts in the women's 49kg competition at the continental showpiece, which led to injury on Saturday. Chanu, who will fly back to India on Sunday, will be undergoing tests at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute in Mumbai. "We have to wait and find out the extent of her injury. She can't put down her foot as of now. Tomorrow we will have some idea depending on if she is able to walk," head coach Vijay Sharma told PTI over the phone from Hangzhou.

"We are trying to do all the the tests on Monday but since it's 2nd October lets see if it is possible. Otherwise it will happen on Tuesday. We have spoken to a reputed doctor in Mumbai and booked appointment for October 4," he added.

Earlier in the day, the 2017 world champion had managed to lift the 117kg bar which rested on her collarbone, ready to be jerked, but the Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist's hip gave up and she crumbled on the floor.

Lying on her back in agony, Sharma had to lift Chanu and carry her away from the platform in his arms. Had the two-time Commonwealth Games champion succeeded in lifting 117kg, she would have won the bronze medal.

After winning medals at the Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Asian Championships, an Asian Games medal was the only silverware left to adorn the 29-year-old's illustrious trophy cabinet.

"After snatch I asked her to pull out but she insisted on going through. She is mentally very tough and insisted that she'll mange the lift and stand on the podium," Sharma said.

Immediately after failing to clear her first 86kg snatch attempt, a grimace had spread on the former world champion's face. But she persisted.

Sharma said had everything worked out, Chanu would have logged the much-anticipated 90kg lift in snatch.

"Mira (Chanu) has been lifting 90kg in training for the past 2-3 months. She lifted that in the selection trials as well.

"It's unfortunate, Mira was oncourse for a medal. She was fit also. It's all God's doing. Last year she was at peak fitness and looked strong but the Asian Games were postponed by a year due to COVID," Sharma said.

At the Asian Championships in May, a dodgy hip had forced her to skip the last two attempts, dashing her hopes of a medal.

Starc Makes Perfect Start To WC Prep, Takes Hat-Trick Against Netherlands

Australian cricket team fast bowler Mitchell Starc started his preparation for Cricket World Cup 2023 on a perfect note as he claimed a hat-trick during the warm-up match against Netherlands on Saturday. The veteran pacer struck on the fifth ball of the first over of the Netherlands innings as he trapped Max O'Dowd LBW with an in-swinger that nipped back late. One ball later, it was Wesley Barresi who fell victim to his pace as he tricked him with another in-swinger that crashed into the top of the off-stump. Starc had to wait one over to get his hat-trick but he made no mistake as Bas de Leede was clean bowled on the first ball of the third over with yet another in-swinger.

Meanwhile, persistent rain on Saturday washed out the World Cup warm-up match between India and England at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

It began raining a little before the start of the match on Saturday afternoon, which resulted in the toss being delayed but later in the evening the umpires decided to abandon the contest, a little before 6pm local time owing to inclement weather.

All 10 teams will get to play two warm-up matches each before the group stage of the 50-over World Cup which gets underway in Ahmedabad on October 5.

England will face New Zealand in the World Cup opener.

England, who arrived in India a day before their first warm-up match, will remain in Guwahati to play their second and final warm-up game against Bangladesh on October 2.

The warm-up matches began on Friday with Sri Lanka suffering a seven-wicket defeat at the hands of Bangladesh here, while New Zealand defeated Pakistan in a high-scoring contest in Hyderabad.

The warm-up matches are being played at three venues Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram and Hyderabad.

Bangladesh Beat Sri Lanka By Seven Wickets In World Cup Warm-Up Match

Bangladesh handed Sri Lanka a crushing seven-wicket defeat in their first warm-up match of the ICC ODI World Cup in Guwahati on Friday to make a winning start. Chasing 264, Bangladesh rode on half-centuries from top-order batters Tanzid Hasan (84), Litton Das (61) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (67 not out) to romp home in 42 overs at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium. Hasan cracked 10 fours and two sixes to make a sturdy 84 off 88 balls, while Das hit 10 fours in his 56-ball 61. The two batters added 131 for the opening wicket.

Mushfiqur Rahim remained unbeaten on 35.

Earlier in the day, opting to bat Sri Lanka were bowled out for 263 in 49.1 overs with Pathum Nissanka and Dhananjaya de Silva scoring fifties.

Opening batter Nissanka added 104 for the first wicket with Kusal Perera (34) but despite getting a strong start, Sri Lanka's middle-order could not capitalise.

Nissanka made his 68 off 64 balls with eight fours and a six, while de Silva took 79 deliveries to score 55 with two fours and a six.

SAFF U19 Championship: India Beat Nepal, Set Up Final Against Pakistan

A nerveless India overcame a sticky Nepal 3-2 through a penalty shootout in their semifinal match on Wednesday to set up the SAFF Under-19 Championship final against Pakistan. India will face their arch-rivals in the summit clash on Saturday at the Dashrath Stadium. The match went into tie-breaker after the score stood at 1-1 after the regulation time, which saw both the sides playing some fast-paced football. Sahil Khurshid had put India ahead in the 26th minute but Nepal drew level through a 74th minute strike by Samir Tamang.

When the score was tied 2-2 in the tie-breaker, Manglenthang Kipgen emerged India's hero as he coolly slotted the ball in to make it 3-2 and give his side a victory.

Apart from Kipgen, the other two scorers for India in the shootout were Arjun Singh Oinam and Gwgwmsar Goyary.

Kipgen joined the action only in the 66th minute as a replacement for Blue Colts' captain Ishan Shishodia.

In the first semifinal of the day, Pakistan had defeated Bhutan 6-5, as that match also went in to the tie-breaker.

Will Axar Recover In Time For WC? Report Provides Massive Injury Update

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will be available for the third ODI against Australia after being given a one-match break but all-rounder Axar Patel will be given a few more days to recover from his quadricep tear ahead of the World Cup, BCCI sources said on Monday. While Ravichandran Ashwin has done decently in his two outings, the team management is still bullish about the fitness of Axar, the left-arm spin bowling all-rounder. "The team management wants to give Axar full chance of recovery. His forearm and finger bruises have healed but may be in another few days, he would get fit for World Cup. India's first match is on September 8 and hence there is time.

"As far as Ashwin is concerned, we now know that he is match fit and in rhythm. If Axar can't make it, Ashwin walks in," a BCCI source privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The final squad announcement is on September 27 and it is understood that Axar still remains the team management's top choice for the reserve spinner's slot ahead of the Tamil Nadu veteran.

It is understood that young batting star Shubhman Gill and bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur have been given a few days rest ahead of the third ODI in Rajkot on Wednesday.

"As per rotation policy of the team, Bumrah, who was given a couple of days off to freshen up is back along with skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav. Gill, who has been playing continuously gets to cool his heels for 3-4 days along with Shardul Thakur," the source added.

Ruturaj, Mukesh released for Asian Games

India's Asian Games cricket team captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who played the first two ODIs, have been released from the squad as he will link up with the Hangzhou-bound outfit. Also released is pacer Mukesh Kumar, who came as cover for Bumrah, who was given a break.

It is understood that Washington Sundar is also suppose to leave on the evening of the game or day after.

While the Indian World Cup-bound team won't have any travelling net bowlers, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh and Mukesh Kumar will be summoned as and when required.

EPL: Son Heung-Min Shines As Tottenham Rescue Derby Draw At Arsenal

ottenham came from behind twice to rescue a pulsating 2-2 draw against Arsenal thanks to Son Heung-min's double in Sunday's north London derby. Ange Postecoglou's side trailed to Cristian Romero's first half own goal before South Korea forward Son hauled them level at the Emirates Stadium. Bukayo Saka restored Arsenal's lead with a second half penalty, but Son had the last word with his second goal as these bitter rivals both extended their unbeaten starts to the Premier League season.

Tottenham sit in fourth place, above fifth placed Arsenal on goal difference, after a hard-fought clash offered more evidence that Postecoglou has revived a club in turmoil when he arrived from Celtic in the close-season.

Although Tottenham have now won just one of their last 31 league trips to Arsenal and remain without a victory on enemy territory since 2010, there was much to admire from Postecoglou's team.

Not only did they show impressive character to twice hit back from Arsenal's goals, but they did it with the kind of eye-catching play that was so rarely seen during Antonio Conte's reign.

Tottenham have scored at least twice in all six league games under Postecoglou despite the close-season departure of the club's record goalscorer Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.

"I thought performance-wise we had to show a bit of everything. Arsenal are a top team and we had to defend at times. But we showed real courage and bravery to keep playing our football," Postecoglou said.

"This side is growing. In terms of our football we're still at the beginning but I'm so impressed with the character."

For Arsenal, it was a frustrating afternoon as they lost ground on leaders Manchester City, who stand four points above them in the title race.

"We feel like we lost two points. It's true there was a lot of change in the dominance of the game. Emotionally, that was a difficult one to take," Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said.

"We conceded two really poor goals. At this level they're going to punish you because they've got top players."

Maddison revenge

Arsenal tested Tottenham's mettle in a blistering start as Saka scooped a pin-point cross to the far post, where Gabriel Jesus' half-volley drew a fine save from Guglielmo Vicario.

Arsenal's pressure was mounting and they took the lead in the 26th minute, albeit in the most fortuitous fashion possible.

As Tottenham's defenders backed off too far, Saka advanced into the area and curled in a shot that took a huge deflection off Romero's out-stretched leg as it flashed past the wrong-footed Vicario.

Rubbing salt into Tottenham's wounds, Saka copied James Maddison's goal celebration as the dejected midfielder trudged back to the centre circle.

Arsenal keeper David Raya, starting his third successive match instead of Aaron Ramsdale, made an outstanding save to keep out Brennan Johnson's strike late in the first half.

But, with Tottenham gradually turning the tide, Raya was guilty of misjudging a cross in the attack that led to the visitors' 42nd minute equaliser.

After Raya weakly palmed the ball away rather than catching it, he managed to save Johnson's effort, but Tottenham still recycled possession to Maddison.

Exacting revenge on Saka for his earlier taunt, Maddison adroitly evaded the winger and cut a low cross towards Son, who deftly flicked his shot past Raya from six yards.

Arteta had to send on Jorginho for the injured Declan Rice at half-time but Arsenal quickly regained the lead in the 54th minute.

The hapless Romero blocked Ben White's close-range shot with his hand, conceding a penalty that referee Robert Jones awarded after checking the pitchside monitor.

Saka calmly stroked the spot-kick past Vicario before passing up more mockery of Maddison as he celebrated with a gleeful knee slide this time.

Remarkably, Arsenal's advantage lasted just seconds as Tottenham snatched a 55th minute leveller.

Maddison was the instigator again, dispossessing the careless Jorginho in midfield before teeing up Son for a clinical finish into the far corner.

ISL: Defending Champions Mohun Bagan Thrash Punjab FC 3-1

Mohun Bagan Super Giant kicked off their title defence with a 3-1 thrashing of Punjab FC in the Indian Super League in Kolkata on Saturday. Following a delayed start, Mohun Bagan dominated the proceedings against the I-League promoted side and had a 2-0 cushion going into the halftime with goals from Jason Cummings (ninth) and Dimitri Petratos (34th).

After the changeover, Luka Majcen (53rd) pulled one back from a sloppy back pass by Glan Martins.

But it was not enough as Mohun Bagan pumped in another through India forward Manvir Singh (63rd) to start the season on an emphatic note.

Set up by India midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad, Cummings took a left-footed strike from the right side of the six-yard box to give the Mariners an early lead, which was doubled through Petratos, who utilised a pass from Liston Colaco before launching his left-footed shot into the bottom right corner.

Minutes after he was brought in as a replacement for Subhasish Bose, Manvir used a Petratos cross to shoot to the top left corner with his powerful right-footed strike.

"Nothing To...": Indian Wushu Star After Being Denied Visa For Asian Games

Indian wushu player Mepung Lamgu, who failed to make it to the Asian Games because of diplomatic issues with China, on Saturday said she is "alright", providing relief to her family members in Arunachal Pradesh. "I am alright and currently in SAI Hostel," wrote Lamgu on her newly-opened social media account 'X', a day after her brother in Arunachal Pradesh told PTI that she had gone incommunicado after being denied visa to travel to China for the Games. "I am in constant touch with my family and there's nothing to worry about. Thanks for the concern and support," she added.

(Asian Games 2023 Medals Tally | Asian Games 2023 Full Schedule)

She also attached a photo of her having breakfast with SAI officers.

"We stand with the three #AsianGames2022 bound Wushu athletes, taking the utmost care for them at this hour. The three athletes are being taken care of at the SAI Hostel," the media department of the nodal sports body posted.

Lamgu, along with Nyeman Wangsu, Onilu Tega were denied accreditation, which also works as visa, by the Chinese authorities.

They were part of the 11-member wushu contingent but after reaching airport, the trio had to return to their SAI hostel after being denied visa.

The northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh is viewed by China in its entirety as Chinese territory.

According to her brother Gandhi Lamgu, who is a doctor in Itanagar, she was crying inconsolably after the denial of proper visa.

"Now she's not even taking our calls, and it's coming switched off. So we are also very worried about her, kahin kuch kar na de ro ro ke (hope she doesn't take any extreme step as she is crying inconsolably)," Gandhi had told PTI on Friday.

Lamgu, who won a silver and a bronze at the Moscow Wushu Star meet last two years, was a medal prospect for India at the Asian Games.

Mepung made her first mark as a junior by winning a bronze in the International Wushu Championship in Georgia in 2016.

She then went on to win two gold medals in Moscow Wushu Star 2022, and this year she won a bronze in the same meet at Moscow.

She also shone at the Gujarat National Games, returning with a gold medal and then visited her hometown in Seppa.

India Become No.1 Team Across Formats With Win Over Australia In First ODI

Mohammed Shami's crafty bowling performance was beautifully complemented by the grace and poise of Shubman Gill as India defeated Australia by five wickets in the opening ODI of the three-match series in Mohali on Friday. The victory helped India go top of ICC Men's ODI Rankings replacing Pakistan. India is now the number one team across all the three formats - ODI, T20I and Test cricket. Shami displayed his artistry with impressive figures of 5 for 51, reminding all and sundry of his skills while helping India restrict Australia to 276 after asking the visitors to make first use of the strip.

In reply, Gill once again stamped his authority with a 63-ball 74 and added 142 for the opening stand with the Asian Games-bound Ruturaj Gaikwad (71 off 77 balls) to set the foundation for victory, which, on paper, might have looked a bit more stretched than it actually was.

Victory was achieved in 48.4 overs as Suryakumar Yadav (50 off 49 balls) and skipper KL Rahul (58 not out off 63 balls) also played their part with only Shreyas Iyer (3) and Ishan Kishan (18) missing out on a batting party.

Surya would especially be happy with his effort as he came in when India still needed 92 runs to win. It could have been a bit tricky but along with his skipper, the Mumbai batter showed calmness and also earned confidence with a much-needed half-century.

Gill, who hit his ninth half-century in ODIs, was undoubtedly the batting star of the day. He had six fours and two sixes in his knock but the short-arm pick-up pull off Marcus Stoinis left everyone stunned.

Off-spinner spinner Matthew Short was at the receiving end when he was lofted over long-off for the other six.

Gaikwad, who would have to switch on to the T20 mode in another two weeks' time, had 10 boundaries to his credit. He hit cover drives and square drives and was especially severe on Sean Abbott.

For Australia, the only bright spot was leg-spinner Adam Zampa finding some bowling form with figures of 2/57 off 10 overs.

But the game-changer on the day was Shami, who doesn't seem to feature in India's first XI plans for the World Cup. He literally made a statement with his second five-wicket haul in ODIs.

His performance also put tremendous pressure on the weakest link among pacers Shardul Thakur (0/78 in 10 overs), who has been selected in the 15, primarily due to his batting skills.

Shami was literally unplayable in his opening spell, and then came back to remove a set Steve Smith (41 off 60 balls) in a short second stint, to disturb the visiting team's momentum.

Stockily built wicketkeeper Jos Inglis (45 off 45 balls) and Marcus Stoinis (29 off 21 balls) added 62 runs for the sixth wicket to take Australia past the 250-run mark but it was certainly below par as Shami got Stoinis in the nick of time to put the brakes on their scoring.

Warner (52 off 53 balls), Smith and Marnus Labuschagne (39 off 49 balls) all got starts but the lack of conversion did hurt the Aussies on a day when the Indian bowling unit was supremely effective without being exceptional.

All eyes were trained on Ravichandran Ashwin (1/47 in 10 overs) and he did find his rhythm in the second spell after looking rusty during the first spell. He went for 36 in his first six overs from the 'Harbhajan Singh End' but Rahul changed his end during the second spell and it read 4-0-11-1.

The Australian team also suffered due to freak dismissals, first when Labuschagne missed an Ashwin delivery while trying to play a reverse sweep and the ball ricocheted off Rahul's pads with the batter out of his ground.

Then it was Cameron Green (31 off 52 balls), who was slowly but steadily setting it up with Inglis before a miscommunication led to his run-out.

But no praise will be enough for Shami, probably the most versatile seam and swing bowler of his generation, who has magic in those fingers and wrists.

In his very first over, Shami bowled one that moved in the air and just deviated away after pitching. It was full and pitched at a length where Mitchell Marsh had to press forward and the thickish outside edge was a regulation catch for Shubman Gill.

But the turning point was Shami's second spell, where he bowled a sharp in-cutter that jagged back enough and Smith, who was late in reacting, inside edged onto the stumps.

In his third spell, he bowled one stumps and Stoinis' heave across the line saw his stumps uprooted. It was difficult for India to lose after Shami's efforts.

Team India Sweats It Out In Nets Ahead Of 1st ODI vs Australia - See Pics

The Indian cricket team on Thursday sweated it out in nets ahead of its first ODI of three-match series against Australia. India will take on Australia in the first ODI at Mohali on Friday. The three-match series against Australia will be India's final assignment before the ICC Cricket World Cup at home from October 5 onwards.  Ruturaj Gaikwad, Tilak Varma, KL Rahul, India's skipper for the first two ODIs, and Suryakumar Yadav were seen practicing in the nets. This series will be crucial for Ruturaj and Tilak as it will give them some game time ahead of the start of their Asian Games men's cricket campaign from October 3 onwards. KL, who made a triumphant return in India's Asia Cup winning campaign recently, will also be aiming to unleash "KL 2.0", as he has been described by fans for looking more confident and aggressive while batting, on Aussies.

Suryakumar Yadav's future as an ODI player could also be dependent on this series, as after a disappointing run of performances in the 50-over format has seen many fans call for his axing from the squad. Scoring 537 in 27 ODIs at an average of around 24 with just two fifties, time is ticking for this batter, who has on the other hand has experienced one of the greatest peaks of form ever in T20Is.

1,841 runs in 53 T20I matches at an average of over 46, a strike rate of above 172 and three centuries, and 15 fifties sit in contrast with his ODI stats. This has left many wondering why he has not cracked the ODI code till yet. On the other hand, many players, fans and even team management continue to back him, hoping that this ferocious ball-striker will find his feet in ODIs and replicate his otherworldly T20I performances.

Ahead of the match, head coach Rahul Dravid said about Surya, "We have picked our team for the World Cup and Surya is in it."

"We made that decision to do that and we completely back him. We back him because he's got a certain quality and an ability that we have seen. Yes, I know we have seen it at the moment only in T20 cricket, but we know the kind of impact a player like him can make batting at six."

"He can change the course of a game, so we have completely backed him.  We have been pretty clear about that.  There's been total clarity on the fact that we are completely behind him."

"We know that hopefully, he will be able to turn it around in these three games. Again, he is someone who will get these three games, and at least the first couple certainly, to be able to again develop and keep growing on his journey as a one-day cricketer," Dravid concluded.

India squad for first 2 ODIs: KL Rahul (Captain & Wicket Keeper), Ravindra Jadeja (Vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna

India squad for final ODI: Rohit Sharma (C), Hardik Pandya, (Vice-captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel (subject to fitness), Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj.

Korea took the first game but India bounced back to take a 2-1 lead. South Korea didn't allow the Indian team to take away the game as they took the fourth game. The match went to a fifth game which kept the fans on the edge of their seats as India scripted a thrilling victory. South Korea took the first game in a hard-fought battle as India tried to mount a comeback right in the final moments of the first game. Junwoo kicked off the proceedings for the Korean team.

They managed to bag three points in a row as the Indian team continued to struggle to match their intensity.

Ashwal Rai struck back and claimed India's first point by attacking the negative space. Korea continued to maintain the gap till the 13th point.

With the scoreboard reading  9-12 in favour of Korea, India produced a massive block to break the three-point deficit and then make the first game level at 13-13.

The game went on neck to neck, with India maintaining the lead by a single point. India had a two-point lead as they were the first to reach the 20-point mark. Korea increased the intensity of their attack and came from behind to clinch the first game by 25-27.

The second game kicked off with India hoping to keep the game alive with a must-win second-game victory.

It was another neck-to-neck game but India managed to take the lead for the majority of the game and the Korean team tried to make another turnaround. With the game tied 25-25, India held on to their nerves to take the game away by 29-27 with India captain Vinit Kumar picking up consecutive points.

In the third game, India continued to ride high on confidence and took the game with 25-22. India had a comfortable six-point lead (20-14) but their opposition showcased grit and determination to make it 22-18. However, India ensured that South Korea couldn't complete another turnaround as they took the lead of 2-1.

In the fourth game, the tables turned and India were chasing down South Korea's lead throughout the game.

They maintained the lead as India tried to orchestrate a comeback but fell short of clinching the game as well as the entire tie.

With the scores reading 2-2, both teams looked eager to take the final 15-point game. Both teams were determined to give their all. shots were blocked, spikes were made but in the end, it was the Indian defensive block that shut out South Korea's attack to take the game by 17-15 and seal their place in the quarterfinals.

Cricket WC: Archer Set To Travel With England Squad As Reserve Player

England speedster Jofra Archer will travel to India for the ODI World Cup with the Three Lions squad as a reserve player. Archer was a notable absentee from England's 15-man squad for the World Cup due to an elbow injury. However, on Monday England's national selector, Luke Wright confirmed that the 28-year-old pacer will travel with the squad as a reserve. "Jofra Archer will be travelling with the squad to India. He is one of the reserves but we also need to look after him, focus on his rehab," Wright said as quoted from Sky Sports.
Another eye-catching change in England's squad was the inclusion of youngster Harry Brook who continues to rise in each format with time.

Due to back spasms, Jason Roy missed the four-match series against New Zealand, and Brook made a return to the ODI squad in his place.

Ben Stokes who reversed his retirement has enhanced his reputation in the 50-over format with a stellar 182 off 124 balls against New Zealand, the highest score by an England men's player in ODIs.

Dawid Malan also cemented his place in the XI in the New Zealand series by topping the run charts, knocking off his fifth ODI hundred as well.

Spinner Adil Rashid, who played only one game in the New Zealand series, is also cleared to make the squad.

Rashid experienced cramps in his only match and did not play the remainder of the series. Meanwhile, seamer Mark Wood is recovering from a sore heel at the end of the Ashes and is yet to play any competitive cricket since the final Ashes Test.

England's squad for the World Cup: Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes.

Ashwin Makes ODI Comeback, India Leave Star Trio Out In 1st 2 Games vs AUS

Seasoned spinner R Ashwin on Monday made a comeback to the Indian ODI team for the three-match series against Australia while senior players including skipper Rohit Sharma and senior batter Virat Kohli were rested from the first two games. Ashwin, who last played an ODI back in January 2022 in South Africa, could be drafted into the Indian team for the World Cup if Axar Patel doesn't get fit before the September 28 deadline set by the ICC. Axar has sustained a quadriceps tear during the recently held Asia Cup in Sri Lanka.

Off-spinner Washington Sundar has also been included in the squad for all three games and is another back up option for the World Cup.

K L Rahul will lead the side in the first two games before Rohit returns to lead a full strength squad in the third and final ODI ahead of the World Cup beginning October 5.

The first ODI will be played in Mohali on September 22, second in Indore on September 24 and third in Rajkot on September 27. Squad for the first two ODIs: KL Rahul (captain), Ravindra Jadeja (vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Premier League: Leandro Trossard Strikes As Arsenal End Everton Curse

Arsenal finally ended their six-year wait for a Premier League victory at Everton as Leandro Trossard fired the title-chasing Gunners to a 1-0 success on Sunday. Mikel Arteta's side had to work hard for their first win at Goodison Park since 2017, with Belgian forward Trossard settling a scrappy encounter midway through the second half. Arsenal were not at their fluent best but they earned their fourth win in five games this season by matching Everton's physical approach. Arteta has warned his players they would only end their Everton curse if they are willing to put their bodies on the line and they rose to that challenge. After leaving it late to beat Manchester United in their previous game before the international break, this was another tense affair for Arsenal.

But Trossard's goal lifted unbeaten the north Londoners into fourth place, two points behind leaders Manchester City as they aim to avenge last season's late collapse in the title race.

Winless Everton remain in the relegation zone as they face up to another relegation battle after narrowly beating the drop in the last two seasons.

Sean Dyche's team headed into the game on the back of the news that the club is set to have new owners after Farhad Moshiri agreed to sell his 94 percent stake to American investment fund 777 Partners.

The takeover would bring to an end the tumultuous tenure of British-Iranian Moshiri, who first invested in 2016.

Everton's new owners got an early glimpse into the size of the task facing them as the Toffees suffered a fourth defeat in their opening five league games for the first time since 2005-06.

Arteta, a former Everton midfielder, has no such worries as Arsenal prepare for their return to the Champions League after a six-year absence against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.

The Spaniard was rewarded with a clean-sheet from keeper David Raya, who made his Arsenal debut following his move from Brentford as Aaron Ramsdale dropped to the bench.

Raya was one of two changes, with Fabio Vieira making his first start since April in place of Kai Havertz.

Gabriel Martinelli thought he had given Arsenal the lead their dominance deserved when he slotted home from close-range in the 19th minute, but his effort was disallowed for offside against Eddie Nketiah in the build-up.

Gabriel's pass had bounced off Everton forward Beto when Nketiah was ruled to be interfering with play, much to Arsenal's disgust.

Adding insult to injury for Martinelli, the Brazilian forward limped off with a muscle injury soon after that incident.

Arsenal were in such total command that Everton went the first half an hour without a single touch inside the visitors' penalty area.

Everton appealed in vain for a penalty when Abdoulaye Doucoure broke into the area and went to ground under William Saliba's challenge.

Ben White's effort was saved by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford, who produced an even better stop to keep out Marin Odegaard's rocket soon after half-time.

Everton's Arnaut Danjuma fired onto the roof of the net from distance, but Arsenal finally made their pressure pay off in the 69th minute.

A flurry of passes opened up the Everton defence and Bukayo Saka deftly clipped the ball into Trossard, who guided a composed finish into the far corner for his first league goal this season.

Siraj Gives Away 'Player Of The Final' Cash Prize To Asia Cup Groundstaff

Mohammed Siraj, who is also known as 'Miyan Magic' to his fans, won hearts at the R Premadasa stadium here after the final match as he dedicated the ‘Player of the Final' cash prize to the ground staff for their hard work to ensure the final game as also some games earlier went ahead after interruptions caused by rain.   A number of games were affected by rain throughout the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka like India's group-stage game against Pakistan and Nepal, Asia Cup final spot decider between Sri Lanka and Pakistan.     "This cash prize goes to the groundsmen. This tournament wouldn't have been possible without them," Siraj said.

The star bowler earlier won the hearts of Indian fans with his fierce bowling that folded up Sri Lanka's innings on 50 in about 15 overs.

Siraj claimed six wickets in seven overs.

"No biryani here. Have been bowling well since a long time. Was missing the edges earlier. But found them today. The wicket was seaming earlier, but there was swing today. Thought that I will bowl fuller because of the swing. When there's good bonding between fast bowlers, it's helpful for the team… My best spell," the bowler said.

Earlier in the day, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced a well-deserved prize money of USD 50,000 for the dedicated curators and ground staff at Colombo and Kandy.

The ACC and SLC also expressed gratitude to the Colombo and Kandy groundstaff for their outstanding efforts in completing a game despite numerous interruptions due to rain.

ACC president Jay Shah on Sunday took to 'X' to heap praise on ground staff for their hard work throughout the tournament.

Watch: 13 Sixes! Klaasen Shatters Records With 83-Ball-174 vs Australia

Heinrich Klaasen slammed 174 off 83 balls to lead a South African batting assault against Australia in the fourth one-day international at SuperSport Park on Friday. Klaasen shared an extraordinary fifth wicket partnership of 222 off only 94 balls with David Miller (82 not out) as South Africa piled up 416 for five, their fifth-highest total in one-day internationals. Klaasen struck 13 fours and 13 sixes before being caught on the boundary off the last ball of the innings. A run spree of such magnitude did not seem likely as accurate Australian bowling and a slower than usual Centurion pitch saw South Africa make relatively sedate progress on a ground known for high scoring.

At the second drinks break, the total was 157 for three off 32 overs.

The acceleration started with a stand of 74 off 57 balls between Rassie van der Dussen (62) and Klaasen.

It went into over-drive when the left-handed Miller joined Klaasen and hit the second ball he faced, from leg-spinner Adam Zampa, for six.

Miller's 82 not out came from 45 balls and included five sixes and six fours.

Zampa was hammered for 113 runs off his 10 overs, Marcus Stoinis conceded 81 runs and Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Ellis went for 79 apiece.

It is a must-win game for South Africa, with Australia leading the five-match series 2-1.

From PoK to Asia Cup, Zaman Makes ODI Debut With Malinga-like Action

The endless chain of fast bowlers that Pakistan has produced over the years has been the envy point of other cricketing nations. Zaman Khan is the latest to join that illustrious line. But there is a slight difference to Zaman. Perhaps, he is the first slinger fast bowler a la Lasith Malinga to play for Pakistan in international cricket. Zaman was drafted into Pakistan's Asia Cup squad on Wednesday after Naseem Shah was ruled out due to a shoulder injury.

Now, the cricketing world might be engaged in a frantic Google search to know more about Zaman, but the 21-year-old had to waddle through layers of difficulties to even start playing cricket.

The ever-endearing rags to riches story, if you may.

As it happens with many other Pakistan pacers, Zaman too cut his teeth in tape ball cricket in Mirpur, a small village in PoK.

Coming from a family of daily wage workers, Zaman was drawn to cricket from a very young age and found backing from his household to pursue his dream.

"My father and brothers are labourers. I started playing cricket after watching other boys in my street playing that sport. I used to skip classes at Madrasa to play cricket. One of my relatives told me to take part in an under-16 trial in my village after seeing how fast I was bowling. Fortunately, I got selected and my journey started," Zaman said in a video posted by PCB.

Zaman took the next step when he was picked in the Pakistan under-19 team to tour Australia, an experience he termed as an eye-opener.

The pacer's first big stage experience came when he was picked by Lahore Qalandars for Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2022.

It was cathartic for him to rub shoulders with top stars of his country such as Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf.

Zaman made a mighty impression in his first PSL season, taking 18 wickets from 13 matches to finish third on the wicket-takers' chart behind Afridi (20) and leg-spinner Shadab Khan (19).

His effort had played a big role in Lahore winning their maiden PSL title that year.

"When we saw him in the Kashmir T20 league, we wanted to draft him into the side. He was quick and had wonderful yorker, and we thought that he could be a good fit into our team," said Waqas Ahmed, the bowling coach of Qalandars.

His observation was not far from truth as Zaman made his presence felt in PSL 2023 as well, grabbing 15 wickets from 13 matches.

It helped the Qalandars to retain their title, the first team in the PSL to do so.

"He was a bit raw when he came to us. He has that roundarm action. He was quick alright but he tended to stray the ball down the leg side or way outside the off-stump.

"We worked on the accuracy factor at nets and he is a hardworking boy and a quick learner," said Ahmed.

"Since he has this ability to bowl fast full-length deliveries, we always wanted to use him at the death," Ahmed added.

Zaman's skill was visible when he defended 12 runs in the last over of the PSL 2023 final against Multan Sultans on March 18.

Six days later Zaman made his Pakistan debut in a T20I against Afghanistan at Sharjah.

When Pakistan needed a replacement for Naseem, team director Mickey Arthur, a man who has a keen eye for talent, immediately wanted Zaman in the squad.

Zaman was handed his ODI debut too against Sri Lanka here.

But more than that, it will be a golden opportunity for him to learn the nuances of his craft from an accomplished performer like Morne Morkel, Pakistan's bowling coach.

"I am super excited to work with a talent like Zaman. I followed him a little bit on TV during the PSL, but it is important for him to find his feet in a big game (against Sri Lanka), a must win for us.

"He is a fine talent. I want to connect with himl, build that relationship, and develop him because he is a match winner," said Morkel.

"Even I Can't Pick...": KL Rahul's Confession In Praise For Kuldeep Yadav

India spinner Kuldeep Yadav is truly repaying the faith shown in him by the selectors. Having gotten the nod for India's World Cup squad, Kuldeep continues to spin web around opponent teams' batters. In the Asia Cup 2023, the left-arm spinner has emerged as India's brightest wicket-taking option. In fact, India batter KL Rahul had a confession to make after witnessing Kuldeep's sensational performance help the team seal a spot in the Asia Cup 2023 final. The experienced spinner claimed his five-wicket haul in the ODI against Pakistan and backed up his performance by claiming another four-wicket haul against Sri Lanka.

Rahul shared his experience of watching the left-arm spinner do his magic behind the stumps and said in the post-match conference, "He has been bowling really well. When I am wicketkeeping I enjoy watching him bowl. Sometimes even I can't pick under the lights the way he is bowling. He has developed new tricks and you can see that it is giving out results. His rhythm and execution has been exceptional."

On a surface that was better suited for the spinners, Sri Lanka's youngster Dunith Wellalage claimed his maiden five-wicket haul to dismantle the Indian batting set-up.

Rahul asserted that the next time they come up against him, the Indian batters will look to go after the youngster.

"He was spot on He got five wickets He did the job for his team. He looked the most dangerous bowler in Sri Lanka's attack till I was playing. Probably next time we play we will try to get after him," Rahul added.

Coming to the match, India's bowling attack combined to end Sri Lanka's 13 ODI match unbeaten streak and seal their spot in the final of the Asia Cup 2023 with a game to spare, as the hosts bundled out for 172 chasing a paltry target at the R Premadasa Stadium on Tuesday.

While spinners from either side dominated the game, the pacers, too, played a part in India's 41-run victory over the co-hosts.

What Happens To India's Asia Cup Title Hopes If Match vs SL Is Abandoned

The Asia Cup 2023 has been severely affected by rain delays with a number of matches getting abandoned due to either heavy showers or far from ideal ground conditions. The much-anticipated India vs Pakistan game in the group stages had to be abandoned due to rain and their Super 4 clash could be finished thanks to the reserve day. The game between India and Sri Lanka was also halted after the 47th over during the Indian innings due to rain with the score reading 197 for 9 wickets.

A look at the qualification scenarios for India if the game against Sri Lanka is washed out -

India will have 3 points from 2 matches and a win against Bangladesh in the final Super 4 game will guarantee their spot in the final. They will end up with 5 points and an extremely positive net run rate.

In case of a defeat against Bangladesh, India will still remain favourites to reach the final barring some exceptional circumstances, A win for Sri Lanka in their last game against Pakistan will take them to 5 points but the Babar Azam-led side will be stuck at 2 points after losing to India comprehensively.

On the other hand, a win for Pakistan will mean that the Babar Azam-led side will reach the final and although both Sri Lanka and India will have 3 points, Rohit Sharma and Co are expected to advance due to their superior net rate. However, in this case, a very heavy loss against Bangladesh can derail India's plans.

If the match between India and Bangladesh is washed out, India will end up with 4 points and that will also guarantee their passage to the final as both Sri Lanka and Pakistan cannot reach that mark.

If India lose to Bangladesh and the Sri Lanka-Pakistan game is abandoned, India and Pakistan will have 3 points each but once again net run rate will be the deciding factor. India are expected to go through due to a much superior net run rate unless they face a huge defeat against Bangladesh.

Javelin Thrower Kishore Jena Wins Indian Grand Prix 5 With Throw Of 82.53m

Kishore Jena and Amoj Jacob, who excelled in the Budapest World Championships last month, kept up their good form to earn gold medals at the Indian Grand Prix 5 2023 athletics on Sunday in Chandigarh. Javelin sensation Jena's best attempt, a throw of 82.53m, came on his first try. His following throws read 80.74m, 81.56m and 78.39m. The 28-year-old athlete spoiled on the fifth attempt and finished with 78.98m. All of Jena's permitted throws were finer than the second-placed Vikas Yadav, who accomplished a distance of 72.88m.

Jena was thrust into the spotlight with a personal best of 84.77m in Budapest last month.

On a night when, for the first time in the history of Indian track and field, three countrymen competed together in the final of a single event at the World Athletics Championships, the Odisha athlete put on a show to remember, hurling the spear to a distance of 84.77m, a personal best.

Jacob, part of the team that broke the men's 4x400 Asian record at the world championships last month, won the men's 400m race in Chandigarh. He finished line in 45.92s to pip Olympian Noah Nirmal Tom for the gold medal. Noah Nirmal Tom claimed silver in 46.55s.

Jyothi Yarraji competed in the 400m sprint for the first time. The 23-year-old finished 10th in the event in 53.91s.

Vithya Ramraj timed 52.40s to bag the women's 400m gold ahead of Subha Venkatesan, who finished her run in 52.57s to claim second spot.

Asia Cup, Super 4: Samarawickrama, Bowlers Help Sri Lanka Beat Bangladesh

A sparkling 93 by Sadeera Samarawickrama that preceded a spirited bowling effort helped Sri Lanka overcome Bangladesh by 21 runs in their Asia Cup Super 4 match in Colombo on Saturday. Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka (3/28), spinner Maheesh Theekshana (3/69) and Matheesha Pathirana (3/58) were on the money with the ball as they bundled out Bangladesh for 236, after posting 257 for 9. The visitors offered a hard fight through young Towhid Hridoy (82 off 97 balls, 7x4, 1x6) but the night did not have space for a one-man super show.

Now the Lankans can make a genuine charge towards the final with two matches remaining, but Bangladesh's hopes of entering the title round were all but over after this setback.

They had lost to Pakistan in the Super 4 opener at Lahore by 7 wickets on Wednesday.

However, Bangladesh began their chase with them having a real chance to overhaul Lanka's total.

Openers Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mohammad Naim added 55 runs in 11.1 overs, but Shanaka broke the burgeoning alliance.

Miraz pulled Shanaka straight into the hands of substitute Dushan Hemantha, and he soon dismissed Naim with a sharp bouncer that the batter edged to wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis.

Bangladesh found themselves at 83 for four soon, but veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim and Hridoy added 62 runs for the fifth wicket to take Bangladesh back on track.

Mushfiqur was not really at his fluent best but Hridoy played some lovely shots en route his fourth ODI fifty, especially in the arc between mid-wicket and fine leg.

When the boundaries were difficult to get the 22-year-old Hridoy kept the board pushing through sharp running between the wickets.

Shanaka returned to snap the threatening alliance, dismissing Mushfiqur, and a little later Theekshana trapped Hridoy in front of the wicket as Bangladesh's spirit gradually ebbed away.

Earlier, Samarawickrama, whose 93 came off just 72 balls, and Mendis, who made an even fifty, fought hard but Lanka found the going a bit tough and ended up with a total that was just about challenging.

After the early departure of Dimuth Karunaratne, who edged pacer Mahmud to Mushfiqur behind the stumps, Lanka found some sanity through Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis.

Mendis and Nissanka (40 off 60 balls) added 74 runs for the second wicket but the partnership was not always smooth.

Mendis, in particular, was scratchy in the middle and there were edges and false shots galore in his 60-ball knock.

Nissanka was relatively more fluent, but a clever slower delivery from Shoriful Islam ended his stay, as even the DRS could not save the batter from the leg-before verdict.

The home side lost three more wickets in the span of next 14 overs as they struggled for a lively middle-over phase.

Samarawickrama took charge of the situation at this juncture.

One of Sri Lanka's better ODI batters this year, Samarawickrama negated a rather slow pitch and Bangladesh bowlers during his fluent innings.

The right-hander was sure in his feet movement and judged the length very early, a pulled six off pacer Hasan Mahmud stood as a testimony to that.

Samarawickrama and Shanaka added 60 runs for the sixth wicket that carried them past the 200-run mark before the latter got out to Mahmud, who was impressive while taking three wickets.

Samarawickrama, who eventually got out in the last over of the innings, could have carried Sri Lanka to a better place with a bit more support but that was not forthcoming.

But the Lankan bowlers ensured that his knock did not go in vain.
