Pakistan Ex-Cricketer Khalid Latif On Trial In Dutch MP Threat Case

A former Pakistani international cricketer went on trial Tuesday in the Netherlands for allegedly attempting to incite the murder of anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders, with prosecutors demanding a 12-year sentence if convicted. Dutch public prosecutors said Khalid Latif, 37, who remains in Pakistan, had offered 21,000 euros ($23,000) in an online video from 2018 in which he called for Wilders' killing.

The outspoken Dutch MP at the time cancelled a competition for cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed after angry demonstrations broke out, particularly in Pakistan, and the far-right politician was inundated with death threats.

"Latif tried to move others to murder Mr Wilders and to avenge the cartoon contest," prosecutor F. A. Kuipers told the judges.

"Not only was his goal to end a human life with violence, but with his appeal he tried to silence a Dutch representative," she said at a court hearing, held at a high security courthouse near Schiphol airport.

"Calling for a murder to prevent the cartoon competition and offering a sum of money to kill the organiser of that competition, should be very severely punished as far as the Public Prosecution is concerned," Kuipers added, before asking for a 12-year sentence.

Neither Latif, nor any lawyer were present in the courtroom. The Pakistani embassy in The Hague had no comment directly after the hearing and Latif could not be immediately reached for comment.

Kuipers said prosecutors have tried since 2018 to speak to the cricketer and handed over a request to Islamabad for legal assistance, to no avail.

The Netherlands does not have a treaty regarding legal assistance with Pakistan, she said. "The questions we have for Latif remain unanswered," Kuipers said.

'Won't be silenced'

Wilders, who was in court during the hearing, told the judges death threats on his life increased after his plans to stage the controversial cartoon competition. Known for his firebrand comments about Islam, Wilders has been under 24-hour state protection since 2004.

"Whatever you find of the cartoon competition, there is no reason to put a price of death on somebody's head for it," Wilders said.

Addressing Latif personally, Wilders, known for his peroxide bouffant hairdo, said "your call to have me murdered will never silence me".

But at the time, the plan to stage the contest received widespread criticism at home, with politicians, local media and ordinary citizens slamming the idea as needlessly antagonising Muslims.

Latif's call resonated in the real world, Kuipers said. A Dutch court in 2019 sentenced a Pakistani man to 10 years in prison for plotting to assassinate Wilders in the wake of the cancelled contest.

The man, identified as Junaid I. was arrested in 2018 at a train station in The Hague after he posted a film on Facebook in which he said he wanted to "send Wilders to hell" and urged others to help. The verdict is due to be handed down on September 11.

Latif, 37, who played five one-day internationals and 13 T20Is for Pakistan, was banned from cricket for five years in 2017 for spot-fixing in a Pakistan Super League match in Dubai. Latif, who had shown tremendous early promise as a cricketer but failed to make an impact at international level, made his last Pakistan appearance against the West Indies in Abu Dhabi in September 2016.

He completed his ban last year and has since been living a low-profile life in Karachi, coaching at club level.

Pakistan Announce Playing XI For Asia Cup 2023 Opener Against Nepal

Pakistan have named their playing XI for the opening game of the Asia Cup against Nepal in Multan on Wednesday. With Nepal as their opponent in the opening game of the 2023 Asia Cup, Pakistan has prioritised batting depth. Pakistan has many bowling options with three frontline quicks and three all-rounders who can bowl spin. The team made a few adjustments from the starting lineup against Afghanistan in the final ODI in Colombo. While Saud Shakeel moves to the middle order, Iftikhar Ahmed takes his place. Pakistan chose to go with Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf, leaving no opportunity for pacer Mohammad Wasim.

Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz will be aided by Salman Agha in the spin department.

The batting line-up has a familiar look with Iftikhar coming back into the middle-order after missing the final ODI against Afghanistan.

Pakistan XI: Babar Azam (c), Fakhar Zaman, Imam ul Haq, Mohammad Rizwan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Salman Agha, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf.

Verstappen Wins Dutch GP For Record-Equalling Ninth Successive Victory

Max Verstappen won a chaotic, deluge-hit and red-flagged Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday to match Sebastian Vettel's record run of nine consecutive victories. Fernando Alonso for Aston Martin took second with Alpine's Pierre Gasly completing the podium at Zandvoort. "Fantastic job, the weather didn't make it easy for us," said Red Bull's double world champion. The home favourite's 11th success from the 13 races staged this season extended his lead to 138 points in the championship over teammate Sergio Perez, who finished fourth. "I'm incredibly proud, I had goose bumps with the national anthem playing at the start, an incredible atmosphere" said Verstappen, to roars of delight from his orange army of fans.

"He's done it, matched the nine victories of Sebastian, I mean what a performance today," said Red Bull boss Christian Horner.

For Red Bull this latest display of dominance in trying circumstances extended their record unbeaten run to 14 stretching back to Abu Dhabi last year.

In front of the massed ranks of his fans Verstappen maintained his iron hold over Zandvoort since the circuit carved into the dunes by the North Sea rejoined the F1 calendar, this being his third straight win from pole.

A carnival atmosphere rocking to Max's beat greeted the grid at the start, US actor Steve Carroll among the sell out 305,000 crowd over the weekend.

Unlike Red Bull's metronomic form the weather was proving unpredictable, a thunderstorm rolling off the North Sea towards the track.

After the national anthem splendidly performed by Andre Rieu and his orchestra it was lights out at the seaside.

Verstappen got off to a flyer, holding off his front lane companion Lando Norris of McLaren to turn one as the rain arrived.

A fleet of cars came in to switch from dry to soft tyres, leaving Perez leading from Zhou Guanyu's Alfa Romeo.

In a personal landmark Liam Lawson, the New Zealand rookie called in to replace injured Daniel Ricciardo by AlphaTauri, clocked an early fastest lap in his first ever grand prix.

But he was then slapped with a 10sec time penalty for impeding in the pitlane.

Verstappen was in fourth, 14sec off his Mexican teammate, after a frantic opening four laps.

He charged past Gasly and Zhou to go in hot pursuit of Perez, nine seconds up the road.

On a drying track Verstappen pitted, with Perez doing likewise to give back the lead to the local hero on lap 13.

Logan Sargeant then embedded his Williams in the barrier at turn eight, triggering a safety car on lap 16.

"I don't know what happened man, I crashed," the American rookie muttered disconsolately, getting out of the car and collapsing on a nearby dune, his head in his hands.

The safety car came in on lap 22, Verstappen bunching the field up before putting his foot to the floor as Perez was forced to fend off Alonso.

"Darker clouds are coming in," Verstappen told his pits in arguably the fastest weather forecast ever delivered, his car travelling at 250kph.

Perez trailed by over five seconds at the midway stage of the 72-lap contest as Verstappen reeled off a series of quickest laps up front.

Charles Leclerc was forced to retire his damaged Ferrari 20 laps from the end.

The weather gods, in mischievous mood all weekend, appeared to be the only obstacle between Verstappen and victory.

"We are expecting rain, some of it heavy, 10 laps from the end," he was informed.

As the crowd readied their ponchos the promised deluge arrived, triggering chaos, with a flurry of pit stops and cars losing control forcing the race to be red-flagged with eight laps left.

The 45-minute delay gave the track DJs some unexpected extra work as track marshalls did an impromptu conga line dance down the straight.

The cars were eventually back out behind the safety car and when that disappeared racing resumed under a rolling start procedure with the race reduced to a seven-lap dash to the chequered flag.

Verstappen held on for a hard-earned victory and the unstoppable Dutchman can now set look forward to Monza next weekend when he has the chance to claim the F1 winning streak record outright.

Indian Women's Blind Cricket Team Wins Historic Gold At IBSA World Games

The Indian women's blind cricket team on Saturday scripted history as they won a gold medal after defeating Australia in the rain-curtailed finals of the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) World Games 2023 on the back of their scintillating show in Birmingham. The Indian women's blind cricket team has won everyone's hearts with their spectacular show in the World Games. The Women In Blue remain undefeated, having won all their league games in the tournament. India restricted Australia at 114/8 in the allotted 20 overs and then chased down the revised target of 42 in the fourth over.

Blind cricket in IBSA World Games made a debut last week with England and Australia playing the first match. This was the first final in the World Games and India won the ultimate showdown beating Australia by 9 wickets.

Opting to bat first, Australia got off to a bad start as the side lost the first wicket in the 4th over. Feeling the pressure of finals, Australia carried their innings slowly, scoring 29 runs in the powerplay.

India picked two wickets in the eighth and ninth over as Australia were left reeling at 39/3. C Lewis and C Webeck then carried Australia's innings stitching a 54-run partnership.

However, India came back in the game picking wickets at regular intervals and reduced Australia to 109/8 in just 3 overs. In the end, the team from down under was just able to score 114/8 in the allotted 20 overs.

Chasing a paltry target of 42 runs, India came all guns blazing on Australia bowlers. The Women In Blue never looked out of form as the side chased down the target in just 3.3 overs.

In another thrilling encounter, the Indian men's blind cricket team will meet arch-rivals Pakistan in the finals of the IBSA World Games. Pakistan had defeated India by 18 runs when the two teams began their World Games campaign last week.

India will now look to take revenge on arch-rivals Pakistan as the two teams meet for the second time in the tournament.

India Or Pakistan? Sourav Ganguly Picks Favourite To Win Asia Cup Clash

Former Indian captain and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly said that he has no favourites for winning the India versus Pakistan Asia Cup 2023 match because both teams are really good.  The Asia Cup to be held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka will kickstart from August 30 onwards, with the match between arch-rivals India and Pakistan on September 2 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy set to serve as the Men in Blue's campaign opener.  Ganguly also said that the fitness of Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who made his return from injury and led India to a 2-0 series win against Ireland, will get better with time and India did the right thing by picking Axar Patel in the squad for the continental tournament, as he can also bat well.

"Both India and Pakistan are good cricket teams. The team that plays well will win. I have no favourites....With time his (Jasprit Bumrah) fitness will get better....You can only have three spinners and I think they have done the right thing by picking Axar (Patel), he can bat," said Ganguly while talking to reporters in Kolkata on Thursday.

The squad also marks the return of Jasprit Bumrah to ODI cricket after a gap of more than one year. After proving his fitness in the ongoing T20I series against Ireland, Bumrah is set to test himself in the 50-over format heading into the World Cup. India's pace attack will be boosted by the return of Mohammed Siraj, who was not in the team for some time due to a sore ankle.

Tilak Varma made it to India's Asia Cup squad on the back of his strong performance against West Indies during the tour that ended this month.

Bowling all-rounders Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel are also in the squad to give the captain more diversity in choices. Apart from Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja is also in the team as an all-rounder.

Pakistan, India and Nepal are in Group A while Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are in Group B. The tournament will follow a hybrid model with Pakistan hosting four matches across two venues and Sri Lanka hosting the remaining games.

The six group-stage matches will be followed by the Super Fours, beginning September 6.

The final will be played by the top two teams at the end of the Super Fours on September 17 in Colombo.

Squad: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna.

World Championships: HS Prannoy, Satwik-Chirag Duo In Quarterfinals

HS Prannoy showed nerves of steel, advancing to his third successive quarterfinals at the World Championships with a fighting three-game win over former champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore in Copenhagen on Thursday. World number 9 Prannoy, who won the Malaysia Masters and finished runner-up at Australian Open this season, once again displayed his sterling fighting qualities during his 21-18 15-21 21-19 win over the seventh seeded Loh at the Royal Arena. The 31-year-old from Kerala will face the winner of the match between world number one Viktor Axelsen and Chinese Taipei's Chou Tien Chen in the last eight.

The world number two pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, which had claimed a maiden bronze in the last edition, also stood one step away from another World Championships medal after reaching the last 8 in men's doubles.

The duo bounced back from a mid-game slump to outwit Indonesia's Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin, ranked 10th, 21-15 19-21 21-9 in the round of 16 match that lasted over an hour.

The Commonwealth Games champions, who won four titles this season, will meet 11th seeds Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen from Denmark next.

The Indian duo has lost five times to the Danish pair, including the last meeting at the World Tour Finals in 2021. Earlier, the women's doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, who reached the semifinals of the All England Championships in the last two editions, couldn't sustain the attack and went down 14-21 9-21 in 42 minutes against top seeded Chinese duo of Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan.

In one of the best matches of the tournament so far, Prannoy and Loh fought like gladiators but it was the Indian who refused to give up in the end. After a sedate start, Prannoy slowly found his feet and moved to 6-7 with a cross court return and after his rival hit the net.

The Indian mixed his shots to claw back at 8-8. But Loh ensured a three point advantage at the interval. A deceptive block at the net and a lucky net chord helped Prannoy to draw level at 13-13.

The speedy Singaporean played some extraordinary shots and looked to step up the pace but Prannoy stayed in the fast-paced rallies and pounced on any openings offered by Loh. As a result, Prannoy moved to 19-16 before grabbing three game points and converted in the second attempt.

Loh opened up a 6-3 lead again after the change of sides. The Indian, however, managed to make it 7-8 but Loh again grabbed a 11-8 lead. After two quick points, Loh hit long and wide and sprayed into the net and Prannoy pushed one at the backline to make it 12-13. He drew parity once Loh went long again.

However, Loh enjoyed a run of points to move to 19-14 in a jiffy and took the match to the decider after Prannoy hit wide twice. Prannoy turned the heat on from the onset of the third game, collecting a series of winners to go 4-0 up.

The Singaporean was too erratic as he lagged 3-9. Soon the Indian grabbed a seven-point advantage at the break. After resumption, Loh stepped up the attack and produced some exquisite smashes to reel off five straight points.

Prannoy unleashed two powerful smashes before sending one looping at the backline to move to 14-10. The Singaporean then scripted a sterling fightback, producing a fast, aggressive play to take a 15-14 lead.

A calm Prannoy, however, produced a precise smash to make it 16-16 and then went for a flick serve which his opponent sprayed into the net.

Loh faltered at the net again as Prannoy led 19-17. A cross court on Prannoy's forehand followed by a superb block at the net helped the Singaporean make it 19-all.

However, Prannoy's precise return landed on the line to give him a match point and he sealed it when Loh went to net from the backline. In the men's doubles match, Satwik and Chirag showed great anticipation and execution to dish out an attacking game.

Chirag was superb with his interceptions as he glided through the court and punished any weak returns from their rivals. The Indian pair had a slow start but Chirag and Satwik soon stepped up, raining down their cross court returns.

Soon Satwik unleashed his explosive smash to grab a three-point lead at the breather. The Indonesians tried to fight back with a couple of points but couldn't break the strong defence of the Indians, who quickly extended the lead to 15-10.

Satwik and Chirag kept the pressure and dominated the flat, cross exchanges. A booming backhand gave the Indians six game points. The Indonesians saved one before spraying the serve into the net. In the second game, Marthin and Carnando managed to lead 2-1 but they couldn't build up the pressure with Satwik unleashing his booming smash to move to 5-5.

The Indians took an 11-8 lead at the interval again. The momentum shifted after the break with Marthin and Carnando reeling off six straight points to take a lead with the former showing some good interception.

The Indonesians started extending the rallies and soon they were level at 18-18. In the end, the Indonesians produced two winners to roar back into the contest.

In the decider, the Indians dished out a dominating game after being locked at 4-4 at one stage to take a five-point cushion at the break. Upon resumption, the Indians ran away with the match with the Indonesians committing too many errors.

One such hit into the net gave 12 match points to the Indians and Satwik ended the agony of their rivals with another cross court return.

Haris Rauf Leads Pakistan's Rout Of Afghanistan In First ODI

Fiery pacer Haris Rauf led a pace assault on Afghanistan with a career-best five-wicket haul to give Pakistan a thumping 142-run victory in the first ODI in Sri Lanka's Hambantota on Tuesday. Rauf's shattering 5-18 in 6.2 overs forced Afghanistan to their second-lowest ODI totals of 59 in a staggering 19.2 overs after Pakistan were bowled out for 201 in 47.1 overs. The victory gives Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the three-match series -- the first bilateral between the two nations -- with the remaining matches in Colombo on Thursday and Saturday.

Rauf carried on the demolition act after fellow fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi had removed Ibrahim Zadran (nought) and Rahmat Shah (nought) off successive deliveries in the third over.

It had become 3-4 when Naseem Shah dismissed Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi, also without scoring, before passing the baton to Rauf to complete the rout.

Rauf grabbed wickets of Ikram Alikhil (four), top scorer Rahmanullah Gurbaz (18), Mohammad Nabi (seven), Rashid Khan (nought) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (four) to complete the rout.

Rauf's previous best of 4-65 was against England at Birmingham in 2021. Shaheen finished with 2-9.

Afghanistan's lowest in all ODIs is 58 against Zimbabwe in Sharjah in 2016.

Earlier Rahman was Pakistan's wrecker-in-chief.

The 22-year-old dismissed world number one batter Babar Azam for a third-ball duck to finish with figures of 3-33, while Nabi took 2-34 and Rashid 2-42.

Only opener Imam-ul-Haq with a 94-ball 61, Shadab Khan (39) and Iftikhar Ahmed (30) offered some resistance as Pakistan's much-vaunted batting failed on a slow Hambantota stadium pitch.

Batting first after winning the toss, Pakistan lost opener Fakhar Zaman off the fourth ball of the match for two before Rahman dismissed Azam and Mohammad Rizwan (21) in his first spell.

Haq steadied the innings with a fifth wicket stand of 50 with Ahmed and another 40 with Shadab before Nabi dismissed Haq and Ahmed in quick succession.

Haq's 17th half century had only two boundaries.

Ace spinner Rashid chipped in with the wickets of Agha Salman (seven) and Shaheen Shah Afridi for two.

Shadab, who hit three boundaries in his 50-ball knock, added an invaluable 35-run stand with Naseem (18 not out) for the ninth wicket before the latter was run out.

"Team Is Hungry": Pakistan Captain Babar Azam Declares Ahead Of Asia Cup

Exuding confidence, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam on Monday said the team's players are driven by a strong "hunger" for success as they set their sights on clinching the coveted Asia Cup and World Cup titles. Fresh from their 4-1 home series win over New Zealand, Pakistan are currently in pursuit of the top spot in ODI rankings. They may very well dethrone Australia as the world's No 1 side with a 3-0 whitewash over Afghanistan in their Asia Cup build-up series beginning in Sri Lanka on Tuesday.

"Every player has a hunger to perform in this team. Every player wants to give match-winning performances," Azam said in Hambantota on the eve of their three-match ODI series against Afghanistan.

The series will be a prelude to their Asia Cup campaign. "Recently we have had different player of the match award winners, which is a good sign for any team. When you perform in big tournaments, it boosts your morale as a team and as individuals and this team has performed well in the recent past. Bowlers win you big tournaments and I have faith in them to win us big tournaments,” he said.

Pakistan may never have been defeated by Afghanistan in ODIs, but Azam acknowledged that the upcoming series could be challenging as their opponents would be coming from a 2-1 away victory in Bangladesh.

“We are focused in our preparations as we have big events in the Asia Cup and the World Cup coming up,” said Babar, under whose captaincy Pakistan have won 17 out of 26 ODIs. “But, at the same time, we want to take one series at a time... It is always beneficial for a team to get such a series ahead of major events.

"That we are playing in Asian conditions will definitely provide us an edge and help us get in the rhythm. The Afghanistan team is on the rise and they have some good bowlers. The fans will get to see some exciting cricket.” On current form, the Babar Azam-led Pakistan are favourites to lift the Asia Cup and the cricket showpiece ODI World Cup, according to Zaka Ashraf chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board's management committee.

"I have great hope that with your efforts and hard work, Pakistan will win the Asia Cup," Zaka Ashraf told Azam and Co after meeting them over lunch on the eve of the series at Hambantota.

"After securing victory, I am sure you will carry this momentum and confidence in the World Cup, bringing the trophy back home." "This team under our great captain is performing really well. He has a talented team, and they are all performing in their respective roles. We have world-class batters and bowlers on the side. We have a good combination and I don't find any reason why we should not win this trophy,” he said.

The series will conclude on August 26 before the team travels back to Pakistan to play the opening match of the Asia Cup against Nepal four days later.

Pakistan are looking to gain momentum from the series against Afghanistan who had lost to Sri Lanka at the same venue 1-2 in June.

Since the start of 2022, Pakistan have won 13 out of 17 matches and in May, they, for the first time in history, topped the ICC rankings for ODI sides.

2nd T20I: India Beat Ireland By 33 Runs, Take Unassailable 2-0 Series Lead

Indian batsmen and bowlers were immense in their roles while giving their team a 33-run win in the second T20I and an inviolable 2-0 series lead over Ireland in Dublin on Sunday. Once India erected a strong 185 for 5 after being asked to bat first, Ireland felt the heat while chasing and they were restricted to 152 for 8 despite a 51-ball-72 by Andrew Balbirnie. India had won the rain-marred first T20I by two runs under the DLS method. Fine hands by Gaikwad (58, 43 balls, 6x4, 1x6), Sanju Samson (40, 26 balls, 5x4 1x6) and Rinku Singh (38, 21 balls, 2x4, 3x6) moulded India's charge with the bat.

But on a true pitch, Indian bowlers had to back their batsmen and they produced a superb collective spell under captain Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna and Ravi Bishnoi, who grabbed six wickets between them.

Prasidh continued his impressive return to top of the shelf cricket as the pacer packed off Irish captain Paul Stirling and Lorcan Tucker in his first over to reduce the hosts to 19 for 2.

Leg-spinner Bishnoi castled Harry Tector with a googly, restricting Ireland to 31 for 3 in the Power Play segment.

Ireland's progress was made all the more difficult by the ever-climbing asking rate that often hovered around 12 and above.

But true to the Irish legacy, they fought bravely. Balbirnie was at the front of that mini fightback, making a strident fifty (71, 52 balls, 5x4, 4x6), before perishing to Arshdeep Singh.

His dismissal ended Ireland's faint hopes for a win and Mark Adair's 15-ball 23providing a mere artificial excitement.

However, before the bowlers took over, India ruled the field through their batsmen.

They started the innings briskly through opener Yashasvi Jaiswal who made an 18 off 11 balls with a couple of fours and a six off pacer Josh Little.

But the innings failed to build on the promise as Jaiswal's attempt to pull Craig Young ended in the hands of Curtis Campher at deep.

Tilak Varma failed to make an impression in the second straight game, this time a mistimed pull off Barry McCarthy was snaffled by George Dockrell close to the ropes.

At 35 for 2, India needed some solidity and momentum. The visitors gained that through Samson and Gaikwad for the third wicket.

They milked 71 runs between them to carry India past the 100-run mark in the 12th over.

Samson, who has triggered selection discussions ahead of India's squad announcement for Asia Cup 2023 on Monday, played a nice, little innings of 40 off 26 balls that contained five fours and a six.

Samson tore into Little in the 11th over, hammering him for 18 runs.

An inside-out loft over covers, a slap over covers and a guide through the cordon brought him three fours in a row.

He decorated that train of aggression with a swivel pull that fetched him a maximum over fine leg.

However, a moment of misfortune ended his stay. Samson wanted to play leg-spinner White over the covers off a wide ball on the off-stump, but he could only drag the delivery back on to his stumps.

At 105 for 3 in the 13th over, India had a good launchpad to get to a sizable total.

Gaikwad kept his end going steadily. It was an anti-thesis to usual the T20 cameos as he looked to build the innings around him.

The right-hander reached his fifty, second in T20Is, with a powerful pull off White.

However, McCarthy's slow ball drew curtains on Gaikwad's innings. India were 129 for 4 then.

But India had a couple of big hitters in their ranks in Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube, and they showed their power-hitting prowess in the 19th and 20th over.

The penultimate over by McCarthy went for 22 runs with Rinku carting him for two sixes and a four, and Adair's final over produced 20 runs as India motored on.

Kishan, Samson Or Rahul - India's Wicket-Keeper Conundrum In Asia Cup 2023

The Indian cricket team squad for Asia Cup 2023 is most likely to be announced on Monday and questions still remain on the choice of wicket-keepers for the competition. Rishabh Pant provided India with a stable option in all three formats but his injury last year has resulted in multiple experiments in hunt for the perfect team composition. While Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson were provided opportunities from time to time, KL Rahul was also tried out as a makeshift option to open up space in the middle-order to play an extra batter in order to stabilise the young core of the team.

The one name that seems to be dominating headlines recently has been Ishan Kishan thanks to a sensational run of form in West Indies. The youngster opened the innings in white-ball cricket and he ended up being the top-scorer in the ODIs. While few questions were asked about his wicket-keeping skills, his aggressive batting display solidified his position as a strong contender for the spot.

However, the problem with his selection lies less with his form and more on how the team has used him till now. Kishan has made his name primarily as an opener and that was the position that was given to him in the West Indies series as well. However, with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill potentially opening the innings for India in the Asia Cup, the wicket-keeper in the team will be expected to bat in the middle order much like Pant. That is a position where Kishan has not enjoyed scoring runs in his career and that is one reason why selectors may end up looking for other options.

This is also the topic that brings the conversation directly to KL Rahul and Sanju Samson. The fanfare around Samson has been a constant factor on social media and fans are always asking for his inclusion. With a solid Indian Premier League (IPL) record, he also provides a strong middle-order option but the lack of strong performances off late can prove to be a hindrance in his path.

Similarly, Rahul is also recovering from injury and although he looks ready to make his comeback, inclusion into the squad will mean lack of match practice if he takes the field against Pakistan in the first match. However, it is his experience and utility that will always make him a favourable option for the selectors and his inclusion can mean another contender for the somewhat dicey No. 4 spot.

2nd T20I: UAE Thrash New Zealand By 7 Wickets For Historic Win

United Arab Emirates captain Muhammad Waseem made 55 to set up a seven-wicket win over New Zealand on Saturday in Dubai as the hosts levelled the three-match T20 series. Set 143 to win after again choosing to bowl first, the UAE lost opener Aryansh Sharma without scoring before Waseem and Vriitya Aravind (25) steadied the innings. Waseem struck four fours and three sixes in his 29-ball knock, which ended when he skied left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner to extra cover. Asif Khan finished off the job with an unbeaten 48 as he smacked New Zealand skipper Tim Southee for three boundaries in the 16th over to seal a famous victory with 26 balls to spare.

Mark Chapman's 63 was the standout contribution in New Zealand's 142-8.

Opener Chad Bowes and Jimmy Neesham, who both scored 21, were the only other batters to reach double figures for the tourists.

Aayan Afzal Khan ripped through New Zealand's top order, the left-arm spinner bowling Santner and Dane Cleaver in successive balls before having Bowes stumped to record figures of 3-20.

New Zealand won the first match of the series by 19 runs on Thursday. The series finale is at the same venue on Sunday.

Kylian Mbappe On Bench For PSG Return Against Toulouse

Kylian Mbappe will start Saturday's Ligue 1 game at Toulouse as a substitute after being reinstated to the first team following a contract dispute. The France captain has not played for PSG since the first of the club's pre-season friendlies on July 21, and missed the 0-0 draw against Lorient last weekend in the opening round of games. Mbappe was not invited to the pre-season tour in Japan and South Korea and was made to train with players the club are trying to offload after he refused to sign an extension to his PSG deal.

His contract is due to expire next summer and could see him leave for free, but the 24-year-old was brought back into the fold last Sunday after holding "constructive and positive discussions" with the club.

The u-turn came just two days before Neymar was sold to Saudi side Al Hilal for a fee believed to be close to 100 million euros ($109 million).

French media reported Mbappe made Neymar's departure one of the necessary conditions for him to sign a new contract in 2022, when the former was strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Transgender Chess Players Barred From Women's Tournaments

Transgender chess players will not be permitted to compete in women's tournaments under temporary new rules to be introduced from Monday by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). "In the case of a gender transition from male to female, the player is not entitled to take part in women's events until a new decision is taken by FIDE," said the Lausanne-based organisation in a statement. This decision will be taken "within two years", according to the same source. FIDE stressed, however, that there are "no restrictions on playing in the open section for a person who has changed gender".

The measures do not apply to transgender men competing in the men's categories, but they will be stripped of any women's titles they won before their transition, according to the temporary rules.

According to FIDE, gender reassignment "has a significant impact on a player's status and future eligibility for tournaments", without providing any further details about the reasons for this.

The announcement drew criticism from transgender players.

"I don't think I'm smarter than most cis women, nor do I think that my pre-transition years have given me an innate advantage at chess," said transgender journalist and chess player Ana Valens in an article published on The Mary Sue website.

In the world of sport, the International Cycling Union (UCI), World Athletics and the International Swimming Federation have also taken steps to exclude transgender athletes from women's competitions.

Chelsea Captain Reece James Out For 'A Few Weeks' With Hamstring Injury

Chelsea captain Reece James is set to miss "a few weeks" after injuring his hamstring in training this week, Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino said Friday. The 23-year-old started in Chelsea's season-opening 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday before being substituted in the 77th minute. "It's a sad moment because he's our captain," said Pochettino. "He was so excited and full of energy to be our captain. We are going to assess him day by day.

"For sure he's going to (come back) stronger than he was. It's a few weeks."

England international James's career has been plagued by injuries. The right-back made just 16 Premier League appearances last season.

James suffered a knee injury in October which ruled him out of England's 2022 World Cup squad, before he was sidelined for a further four weeks following a recurrence of the problem during his first game back in December.

He also missed the final seven games of Chelsea's season with a hamstring problem as the Blues finished 12th.

James, who made his Blues debut in 2019 after a season on loan at Wigan, was made captain of the west-London club in pre-season after fellow defender Cesar Azpilicueta left Stamford Bridge.

Watch: KKR Star Recreates Viral Video Of Non-strike Batter Irritating Bowler

The social media is a gold-mine of content. Some of them are funny to the core. While there are several negative side of social media, sometimes it can throw gems which can lift the mood. One such video which has gone viral is that of Kolkata Knight Riders star Venkatesh Iyer. Iyer has been quite impressive in the Indian Premier League, but this time he took the cake with his acting skills. He recreated a video where he cane be seen at the non-striker's end at an indoor training facility. As the bowler is about to bowl, Iyer runs towards the striker and discuss field placements. A similar kind of meme video went viral recently.

In a recent conversation, Venkatesh recalled playing against Dhoni's CSK, and how the former India captain's innovative field setup led to his downfall.

"I and one more guy was batting. There were two fielders on the off-side - a short third man and covers. Everything was fine before he just called a fielder and placed it the other side. The very next ball went the exact same way and he was out caught. He could have had some bad luck too but I was wondering 'Why did it have to be off the very next ball? It could have happened 3-4 deliveries later, right?' Suddenly it felt 'Oh man! What a mind this guy has'," Venkatesh said on Raj Shaman's podcast.

The 28-year-old further revealed that he was left shellshocked by his dismissal, and had to confront Dhoni after the match to ask him about the reason behind his decision.

"Just this year, I was batting and I played a shot and got out at short third man. I turned around and saw 'He is standing wrong. That's not where a fielder stands. He is standing at a wrong position; he should be more to the right. Then I realised 'Oh'. I asked him after the match, 'Bhaiyya, kyu?' (Why?) He said the way the ball was leaving my bat; the fielders should be a lot fine. Then I was like 'WOW! I never even thought like that. To think so quickly then and there, and to understand the angle - cricket is all about angles - to read it is I think his biggest strength," the all-rounder concluded.

Ben Stokes' Three-Letter Reaction After Surprise ODI Retirement U-Turn

England Test captain Ben Stokes reversed his decision to retire from One-Day Internationals ahead of the Three Lions' defence of their 50-over men's World Cup title in India later this year. Stokes, who retired from ODIs last year citing workload management, played a crucial part in England's first 50-over World Cup triumph, including a match-winning knock in the final against New Zealand, in 2019. With speculations growing regarding his ODI return, England confirmed that Stokes will take part at the marquee event in India.

Hours after being named in England's preliminary 15-man World Cup squad, Stokes took to Twitter and reacted to his return to ODI cricket.

"LOL (Lauging Out Loud)," Stokes posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Stokes did not bowl a single ball during the last three Tests of the drawn Ashes series, which could be an indication that Stokes might feature as a specialist batter during the World Cup.

The 32-year-old will return for next month's four-match ODI series against New Zealand. England have named the same team for the same.

Young batter Harry Brook and tearaway pace bowler Jofra Archer were the notable omissions.

England have also included uncapped Surrey fast bowler Gus Atkinson in their squad for the New Zealand ODI series.

The defending champions must name their final 15-strong World Cup squad, plus three travelling reserves by September 25.

England ODI squad to play New Zealand:

Jos Buttler (capt/wkt), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes

South Africa To Send Below-Strength Test Team To New Zealand

South Africa will send an understrength team to New Zealand for two World Test Championship matches in February, following the release on Tuesday of the fixtures for its domestic SA20 franchise competition. Cricket South Africa chief executive Pholetsi Moseki confirmed to AFP on Tuesday that no players contracted to the six SA20 franchises would travel to New Zealand. The SA20 will start on January 10 and finish on February 10, overlapping with the Tests which begin on February 4 and February 13.

The clash of fixtures effectively eliminates most of South Africa's first-choice players with the exception of former captain Dean Elgar, who was not contracted for the first edition of the T20 competition earlier this year.

Several leading players have been pre-contracted and an auction on September 27 is expected to mop up most of the rest, including likely second-choice or even third-choice players.

"It is a directive of Cricket South Africa," said Moseki, adding that the ruling would also apply to players whose involvement ended at the conclusion of the league phase of the SA20, which ends on February 4.

"Because of the time zones, players need at least a week to acclimatise in New Zealand so it will not be possible for some SA20 players to join the team for at least the second Test," he said.

Cricket South Africa tried to negotiate a postponement of the Tests but this was rejected by New Zealand Cricket.

The decision is another blow for Test cricket in South Africa, with the majority of future series restricted to two matches, including a high-profile home series against India in December and January - the only home Tests of the South African summer.

Moseki said at the announcement of the International Cricket Council's future tours programme last year that South Africa's reduced Test schedule was necessary in order to accommodate the SA20 in a prime part of the season.

But Moletsi said he was confident that South Africa would send a competitive team to New Zealand. "I have faith in our pipeline," he said.

Elgar bemoaned the situation in a newspaper interview last month. "It's tough to take," he said.

"It shows what the narrative is when it comes to Test cricket and again it's the players who suffer. A high percentage of the players still really want to play Test cricket."

Chelsea, Liverpool Stalemate Shows Need For Moises Caicedo

Chelsea and Liverpool had to settle for a 1-1 draw to start their Premier League season on Sunday. After a week of battling to land the signing of Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo for a Premier League record transfer fee, both Chelsea and Liverpool's need for the Ecuadorian was exposed in an explosive encounter. Liverpool's bright start was rewarded when Luis Diaz prodded home the opening goal, but debutant Axel Disasi earned Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino a point on his first game in charge.

The American executives of both clubs were in attendance at Stamford Bridge ahead of an intense few days of negotiations after Liverpool had a 110 million offer accepted for Caicedo, only for the player to remain keen on a move to Chelsea instead.

After his defensive midfield options were gutted by the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Saudi Arabia, Jurgen Klopp named an offensive front six with new signings Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai alongside Cody Gakpo in midfield.

Liverpool settled the better and Mohamed Salah was inches away from opening the scoring when he rattled the crossbar on 12 minutes.

Salah was involved when the Reds did take the lead six minutes later with a brilliant cross that Diaz prodded home at the back post.

The Egyptian's record of scoring on the opening weekend every year of his Liverpool career came to an end, but only due to a VAR review that ruled out a slick finish that would have made it 2-0.

However, the momentum of the game swung after Disasi bundled home Chelsea's equaliser.

Seconds later Ben Chilwell thought he had turned the game on its head, only for VAR to this time ride to Liverpool's rescue for offside.

Chances continued to come and go at both ends, but a seventh consecutive clash between the sides ended in a draw.

Tottenham Held By Brentford In First Taste Of Life After Harry Kane

Tottenham began life without Harry Kane with an entertaining 2-2 draw at Brentford on Sunday to start Ange Postecoglou's reign in charge. Cristian Romero headed Spurs in front early on, but the Bees bounced back to lead through Bryan Mbeumo's penalty and Yoane Wissa. Emerson Royal's strike levelled the scores again before half-time and both sides had to settle for a point to begin the Premier League season. Kane's departure to Bayern Munich on Saturday had overshadowed the build-up to Postecoglou's first competitive game as Spurs manager.

The Australian's daring, front-foot approach that has won league titles in his homeland, Japan and, most recently, in Scotland with Celtic was already in evidence.

However, so were a series of defensive deficiencies that Brentford could have made more of.

For the second time in two days the start to a Premier League game was delayed.

After Arsenal's problems with an e-ticketing system ahead of their game against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, this time the delay was caused by no running water at the GTech Community Stadium.

When the action did get underway, Spurs settled the better despite a disruptive weekend dominated by Kane's emotional farewell.

In his absence and with Hugo Lloris' future also seemingly elsewhere, Postecoglou named Son Heung-min as Tottenham's new captain on Saturday with James Maddison and Romero his deputies.

The vice-captains combined for the opening goal as Maddison's wicked delivery was headed home from close range by the Argentine centre-back.

That was Romero's final involvement as he was replaced due to suspected concussion and his presence at the back was missed.

Brentford were also without their talismanic number nine as Ivan Toney began an eight-month ban for breaking betting on football rules.

Mbeumo took over penalty duties in his absence to slot home the equaliser after a VAR review spotted a trip by Son on Mathias Jensen inside the box.

Tottenham's debutant goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was beaten again moments later as Wissa's shot deflected in off another Spurs new boy Micky van de Ven.

Emerson was the unlikely scorer of Tottenham's equaliser four minutes into 10 added at the end of the first half when he blasted home a loose ball from outside the box.

Yet, Brentford should still have gone in ahead at the break as Mbeumo somehow turned Rico Henry's inviting cross over from point-blank range.

Tottenham dominated the second half in terms of possession but struggled to make it count as they already felt the absence of Kane.

Richarlison fired too close to Mark Flekken and saw a late effort blocked after more fine work from Maddison teed up the Brazilian.

In Sunday's other Premier League clash, Chelsea and Liverpool take their battle for midfield talent in the transfer market onto the field at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool had a British record £110 million ($140 million) bid for Brighton's Moises Caicedo accepted on Friday.

But Chelsea are still looking to hijack that deal for the Ecuadorian, who reportedly favours a move to the Blues.

Chelsea are also keen on long-term Liverpool target Romeo Lavia from Southampton to bolster new boss Mauricio Pochettino's squad.
