Sri Lanka Continue March Towards World Cup Qualification With Win Over Netherlands
Dhananjaya de Silva hit a career-best 93 while Maheesh Theekshana took three important wickets to ensure Sri Lanka's pole position in the Super Six leg of the ICC ODI World Cup qualifiers in Bulawayo on Friday. Sri Lanka now have six points from three games and are likely to finish among top two and qualify for the October 5 to November 19 tournament proper in India. On the day, Dhananjaya's 111-ball knock studded with eight fours and two sixes helped Sri Lanka recover from 96 for six to post a below-par 213 in 47.4 overs.
Theekshana then took three wickets in the space of two overs to derail the Dutch chase as they were all out for 192 in 40 overs. Wanindu Hasaranga took 2 for 53.
During the Sri Lankan innings, it was Dhananjaya-Theekshana pair that added 77 runs for the eighth wicket after the islanders had slumped to 131 for 7 due to an inspired opening spell by West Indies victory hero Logan van Beek (3/26).
A target of 214 was certainly within reach for the Dutch, even on a tricky wicket for the batters.
Their cause was not helped by both openers falling for ducks, Lahiru Kumara removing Vikramjit Singh and Dilshan Madushanka accounting for Max O'Dowd.
However, a 77-run partnership between Wesley Barresi (52) and Bas de Leede (41) got the chase back on track. It was ended by some sharp work in the field by Dasun Shanaka, with Barresi short of his ground while trying to steal a single.
Teja Nidamanuru then became the third Dutch batter to go for a duck, bowled by Hasaranga. In came Scott Edwards, and the skipper quickly settled in alongside De Leede, the pair adding 36 in six overs.
Sri Lanka were in desperate need of a breakthrough and it came from Theekshana, who snuck one through the defences of De Leede. He added two more in his next over, including the vital wicket of Van Beek, before another run-out saw Shariz Ahmed depart for two, leaving the Netherlands on 151 for eight.
The final pair were left to get 38 from 17 overs and the in-form Edwards helped them get close, but the skipper was left stranded unbeaten on 67 when Aryan Dutt was clean bowled by Shanaka.
In the other game of the day in Harare, Ireland eased to victory in the 7th place play-off semi-final, beating the USA by six wickets.
Brief Scores Sri Lanka 213 all out in 47.4 overs (Dhananjaya de Silva 93, Logan van Beek 3/26, Bas de Leede 3/42). Netherlands 192 in 40 overs (Scott Edwards 67 not out, Wesley Barresi 52; Maheesh Theekshana 3/31, Wanindu Hasaranga 2/53) USA 196 all out in 42.4 overs (Sushant Modani 55, Saiteja Mukkamalla 55; Craig Young 3/35, Andy McBrine 2/19). Ireland 197/4 in 34.2 overs (Paul Stirling 58, Andy Balbirnie 45*; Nosthush Kenjige 2/41, Nisarg Patel 1/20).

Second Only To Don Bradman: Steve Smith Scripts History With Ashes Ton
Australian batter Steve Smith has now become the player with the second-highest number of centuries for his country. He accomplished this feat in his side's Ashes second Test against England at Lord's. Smith continued with his rich run of form in English territory, scoring his 32nd Test hundred. The former Australia skipper produced a delightful 110 runs off 184 balls, studded with 15 boundaries.
Ponting holds the record for the most Test centuries for Australia, with 41 tons. Steve Waugh also has 32 tons like Smith. Notably, Smith is the fastest player to get to the 32-century mark, doing so in the 174th innings of his 99th Test, as per cricket.com.au. This was Smith's eighth Test hundred in England, the second-most by any foreign player in the country, behind only Sir Donald Bradman's eleven tons. Also, now Smith has 12 tons in the Ashes. Only Bradman, with 19 tons, has more triple figure mark in the Ashes, according to a ESPN Cricinfo report.
Smith has also become the fourth Australian player to etch his name on the honour's board at the Home of Cricket, Lord's. He joined an elite company featuring the likes of Warren Bardsley (1912, 1926), Sir Don Bradman (1930, 1938) and Bill Brown (1934, 1938) to score multiple Test hundreds at Lord's.
Smith now has 12 Ashes hundreds and now he is only second to the legendary Don Bradman, who has scored 19 centuries in the series.
Smith has a lot of history at the Lord's, a ground where he made his Test debut back in 2010. He smashed a mammoth 215 at the venue during the 2015 Ashes. It was here that England pacer Jofra Archer concussed him in 2019, which is one of the most brutal moments of this rivalry's history.
It further adds to Smith's unique history at Lord's, a ground where he made his Test debut against Pakistan in 2010, where he blazed a mammoth 215 during the 2015 Ashes and where Jofra Archer concussed him in 2019 in one of the Ashes' most brutally memorable moments.
After a rare double failure at Birmingham, perhaps Smith gave England a hope that they could avoid the carnage he unleashed back in the 2019 Ashes, in which he smashed 774 runs in four Test matches. But his attacking, but yet careful strokeplay helped him get another hundred.
In his knock, he also surpassed the total of 9,000 Test runs, with only Kumar Sangakkara being faster to reach the milestone in 172 innings.
Coming to the match, England's first innings is in progress.
In their first innings, Australia was bundled out for 416 runs. Smith (110), Travis Head (77 in 73 balls) and David Warner (66 in 88 balls) played standout innings for Australia.
Josh Tongue (3/98) and Ollie Robinson (3/100) took three-fers. Joe Root took two wickets while the veteran pace duo of James Anderson and Stuart Broad managed a wicket each.

Sri Lanka Down Scotland To Bolster Cricket World Cup Hopes
Sri Lanka defeated Scotland by 82 runs Tuesday to advance to the Super Six stage of the Cricket World Cup qualifiers with maximum points, while Ireland secured a consolation win over the United Arab Emirates. Opener Pathum Nissanka made 75 and Charith Asalanka scored 63 as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 245 in Bulawayo, with Scotland spinners Chris Greaves (4-32) and Mark Watt (3-52) combining for seven wickets.
Scotland slid to 73-5 in reply and were eventually dismissed for just 163 after two run outs in the same over sealed their fate despite an enterprising 56 not out from Greaves.
Sri Lanka, the 1996 champions, go through as winners of Group B and will start on four points in the next round ahead of matches against the Netherlands, Zimbabwe and the West Indies.
Scotland carry over two points following Sunday's win over Oman, the third team to qualify from the section. The next phase of the tournament begins Thursday when hosts Zimbabwe play Oman. The top two finishers in the Super Six will qualify for the World Cup in India in October and November.
Paul Stirling clubbed 162 off 134 balls as Ireland romped to a 138-run victory over the UAE in the other group game between two eliminated nations.
Stirling's knock comprised 15 fours and eight sixes but arrived too late for an Ireland side who lost their first three matches in Zimbabwe.
Captain Andy Balbirnie added 66 and Harry Tector struck a breezy 57 to lift Ireland to a total of 349-4 after they were put in to bat. UAE skipper Muhammad Waseem made 45 before he was bizarrely run out after wandering out of the crease having been hit on the gloves.
His wicket triggered a collapse that spelled the end of the UAE's hopes despite resistance from Basil Hameed (39) and Sanchit Sharma (44) as they were all out for 211.
Ireland and the UAE head into the play-offs for seventh to 10th place with the United States and Nepal.

"Won't Get A Game...": Australia Great's Explosive Take On England Star
Former Australian cricket team skipper Michael Clarke was extremely critical of England fast bowler Ollie Robinson and said that he needs to concentrate on his bowling more than on-field antics. Robinson received a lot of flak for giving a send-off to Usman Khawaja during the first Ashes Test in Edgbaston. The visitors were able to power through on the final day of the match and register a brilliant two-wicket victory. In a recent interaction, Clarke said that Robinson is currently playing for England because bigger names like Jofra Archer and Chris Wood are out of action while suggesting that he needs to prove himself more before losing his temper on the field.
"He needs to shoosh," Clarke said on the Big Sports Breakfast.
"If England were fully fit you wouldn't even get a game, Ollie. If Jofra Archer was playing, or if (Chris) Wood had been playing and was fully fit, old mate - I don't know what town he plays for - he'd be back playing clubbies. I actually don't know what he's doing. If James Anderson is saying all this, he's got street cred. He's played 180 Test matches , he's got a lot of wickets. This dude has been around for five minutes."
"He needs to concentrate on taking wickets .. Ollie, just keep taking five-fors and then you can say what you like," he added.
Meanwhile, veteran fast bowler James Anderson on Saturday vowed England would be "more positive, more aggressive, more entertaining" when they look to level the Ashes series at Lord's next week.
Australia won the opening Test at Edgbaston by two wickets after England skipper Ben Stokes had declared his team's first innings at 393 for eight.
Some critics said that decision allowed Australia to keep a foot in the door of the match which they then gratefully exploited.
"I think we'll go more positive, more aggressive, more entertaining," said 40-year-old Anderson who endured a tough first Test in which he took just one wicket.
"We want to try and make sure people go home happy as they did each day at Edgbaston," he added.

Petra Kvitova Boosts Wimbledon Bid With Berlin Triumph
Petra Kvitova boosted her status as a leading favourite for a third Wimbledon title by sweeping past Donna Vekic in the final of the Berlin WTA grass-court tournament on Sunday. The Czech seventh seed won 6-2, 7-6 (8/6) to clinch her second title of the year and 31st of her career. Sunday's victory gave her a sixth grass-court trophy for a 31st title, giving her more than any other active player besides Venus Williams' 49. Kvitova, 33, who was Wimbledon champion in 2011 and 2014, burst out of the blocks, breaking her opponent twice in the first set.
The pair traded breaks in the second before Kvitova triumphed in a tiebreak.
The world number nine did not drop a set on the way to lifting the title at Steffi Graf Stadium in the German capital.
Moments after the countdown to lift the trophy, Kvitova told the crowd: "I'm in shock right now.
"I wasn't sure I could count in German, but I did it in the end so I'm happy."
Vekic praised her opponent, saying: "Your career is something we can only hope for.
"I've lost to you a few times and every time I lose to you I feel like you win the tournament."
Kvitova has now won 12 of her last 13 matches on grass dating back to her title run in Eastbourne last season. She has lost just four sets over that span.
The unseeded Vekic, 26, impressed this week, defeating reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina on her way to her first grass-court final since 2019.

Watch: Gayle Performs Ronaldo's 'Siiuuu' Celebration Yuvraj Reacts
West Indies star Chris Gayle uploaded a video on his Instagram account in which he could be seen performing the famous 'siuuu' celebration of star Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. In the shared clip, Gayle runs in a baseball field with cameramen around him before he sums up his run by copying the celebration style of Ronaldo. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh too replied on the video with a laughing emoji. Gayle also tried his hands on the game of baseball and received a special jersey from Canadian professional team Toronto Blue Jays.
Watch Gayle doing the 'siuuu' celebration:
After Royal Challengers Bangalore's exit from IPL 2023, Gayle -- who is a former player of the franchise -- had shared a funny reel on social media.
In the clip, Gayle could be seen mourning about Virat Kohli and Co. failing to enter the playoffs with the Bollywood song 'Apun Jaise Tapori' from the movie 'Munna Bhai MBBS' running in background.
Notably, Gayle played 142 IPL matches scoring 4965 at an average close to 40 and a strike rate of almost 150. He continues to hold the record for scoring the highest runs (175 not out) in a single inning of IPL. He played for RCB from 2011 to 2017.
Gayle played 103 Tests, 301 ODIs and 79 T20Is for West Indies scoring 7214, 10480 and 1899 runs respectively.

"Wild Arrogance On Part Of England...": Ex-Australia Star's Startling Take
Former Australian pace bowler Brett Geeves believes England's ultra-aggressive approach is likely to backfire during the Ashes, adding that the declaration on day one of the first Test at Edgbaston was a sign of "wild arrogance" on the part of Ben Stokes' side. England had declared their first innings on 393 for eight despite Joe Root batting on an unbeaten 118, and the home side could have easily scored a few more, which could have given them a psychological advantage. The decision to declare was criticised by several experts and Australia went on to win the thrilling Test by two wickets.
Geeves, who has played one ODI and two T20Is for Australia and has been a successful first-class bowler, said 'Bazball' -- the term coined for England's overly aggressive and result-oriented style of play -- is unlikely to work against Australia.
"It (Bazball) sets them (England) up to fail and to me it kind of feels like 'even if we lose we're playing the best cricket and we have won anyway," Geeves told Sen Radio on Saturday.
"That's not how it works. Particularly against Australia in the Ashes," opined the 41-year-old.
He said it was "disrespectful" on the part of England coach Brendon McCullum to tell his players that he was proud of them despite the defeat. Geeves opined, the coach was undermining the efforts of the Australians by saying this.
"There was (an) article that I was reading that quotes Brendon McCullum in terms of their loss, they're in the changer rooms and Brendon spoke first and he says; 'Lads, I am immensely proud of the effort you put in. We have made the game what it was. We were so close to pulling off an unbelievable victory. We played all the cricket in the game. If it wasn't for us the Australians wouldn't have even had a chance to win'." "It is just a really disrespectful approach to the performances of Pat Cummins and the performance of the run chase and their ability to hold England to 276 in the best batting conditions of the game." Australia skipper Cummins scored an unbeaten 44 and partner Nathan Lyon struck 16 not out, when the chips were down, to take the visitors to the winning target of 282 set by England.
Geeves indicated Australia have a few tricks up their sleeve and they will continue to improve as the five-Test series progresses.
"Australia's still got some improvement. They'll get a little bit more out of their batting list as the series progresses and strategically if they can get their mindset right from a fielding and strategy standpoint, I think they are going to do very well.
"In particular if England have this mindset of wild arrogance and that's what that declaration was. It was wildly arrogant to think that (8/393) was enough in the first innings on a very flat wicket.
"And yes, absolutely, they (Australia) won the game on the back of the English's ridiculously dumb declaration. There is no doubt that England played a part in their win." He said that had England not declared and scored another 50-60 runs, they could have batted Australia out of the contest.
"They (England) could have come back the next day and tried to bat for another 50 or 60 runs which would have batted Australia out of the game, only one team would have been able to win the game had they made 450 or 460 and that was England," he said.
"It's because of the arrogance surrounding their approach to the game. 8/393 declared, you don't do that in Test match cricket. You don't do that across a five-day game when Joe Root is 118 not out." The second Test begins at Lord's on Jun 28.

United States To Host Expanded 32-Team Club World Cup In 2025
The United States will host the expanded 32-team Club World Cup in 2025, governing body FIFA announced Friday. "The Club World Cup 2025 will be the pinnacle of elite professional men's club football, and with the required infrastructure in place together with a massive local interest, the United States is the ideal host to kick off this new, global tournament," said FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The dates, host cities and match schedule for the tournament will be established at a later date, FIFA said. The US will also host the 2026 World Cup along with Canada and Mexico.
The club World Cup has been held annually in a seven-team, or sometimes six-team, format since 2005 with that year's six continental champions plus, when necessary, a representative of the host nation.
FIFA announced the enlarged format in February.
The new competition is planned to include four representatives each from Asia, Africa and CONCACAF, which includes North and Central America, as well as six from South America, 12 from Europe, including the winners of last five Champions Cup, and one each from Oceania and the host country.
In theory, the last edition in the smaller format will be played in Saudi Arabia in December.
Six of the places have already been decided with five continental champions -- Manchester City, Leon of Mexico, Egyptians Al Ahly, Urawa Red Diamond from Japan, Auckland City of New Zealand -- and Al Ittihad representing the host country.
The Copa America in South American has not yet finished.
Current plans would leave a one-year gap before the expanded tournament kicks off. Continental federations have reportedly asked FIFA to ensure that their 2024 champions have a chance to play for a global title next year.
FIFA also announced on Friday it was pushing back the decision on the host of the 2030 World Cup from September or October to the second half of next year "to ensure additional consultation with all key stakeholders."

I Will Go With ACC's Decision On Hybrid Model: PCB's Soon-To-Be Chairman
In less than 24 hours after he had officially "rejected" the 'Hybrid Model' for the Asia Cup after Asian Cricket Council's formal nod, Pakistan Cricket Board's soon-to-be chairman Zaka Ashraf did a complete 'volte-face' by accepting the four matches awarded to the original hosts. The Hybrid Model by virtue of which Asia Cup will be co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka will have India playing all their games, including two against the arch-rivals in the island nation. The model was proposed by Ashraf's predecessor and bete noire Najam Sethi and the banker, who will take over the reins of PCB on June 27 had "rejected" the idea during a media conference.
It has been learnt that Ashraf didn't know that PCB chief Sethi had already been a signatory to 'Hybrid Model' which has been passed by the all-powerful ACC Executive board headed by BCCI supremo Jay Shah and the decision can't be reversed.
Pakistan Cricket Board could have faced punitive action if Ashraf without full details of the event would have created a roadblock.
"In my personal opinion, this whole hybrid model isn't beneficial for Pakistan and I didn't like it," Ashraf was quoted as saying by ESPN Cricinfo.
"Being a host, Pakistan should have negotiated better to make sure that the entire tournament should have been played in Pakistan. Sri Lanka taking the bigger lot of games, leaving Pakistan with only four games, isn't in the best interest of our country," he added.
Ashraf then admitted that he didn't know full details and did a complete U-turn.
"But I see the decision has been made, so we have to go with it. I will not block or have any intention not to comply with the decision. I cannot do much about it but to honour the commitment. But going forward, every decision we make will be made for and in the interest of the country."

Arsenal Set To Sign Germany Forward Kai Havertz From Chelsea: Report
Arsenal are set to sign Chelsea forward Kai Havertz after reportedly agreeing a 65 million pounds ($82 million) fee for the German on Wednesday. Havertz will be allowed to discuss contract terms and undergo a medical at Arsenal after their London rivals accepted the lucrative offer. The 24-year-old has emerged as a top target for the Gunners in recent weeks as they look to improve a squad that finished second in the Premier League last season. After three inconsistent years with Chelsea, Havertz is on course to become Arsenal's first signing of the close-season.
It is believed Chelsea's owners want to avoid letting players enter the final two years of their deals and Havertz, whose contract runs out in 2025, has not agreed an extension.
Mateo Kovacic left Chelsea for treble winners Manchester City on Wednesday, while N'Golo Kante has agreed to sign for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad.
Having joined Chelsea from Bayer Leverkusen in 2020, Havertz has scored 19 goals in 91 Premier League appearances.
Despite some erratic finishing and diffident performances at times, Havertz will always have a place in Chelsea fans' hearts after scoring the winner in their Champions League final victory against Manchester City in 2021.
That was by far the high point of Havertz's time in west London.
After Chelsea's dismal form over the last year, featuring nine goals in 47 games for Havertz, the German will hope his impending move across the capital provides a more stable environment to flourish in.
By offering such a substantial fee for Havertz, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has shown be believes the forward is capable of being a key member of his attack on a weekly basis.

ICC World Cup Qualifiers 2023: Zimbabwe Smash Netherlands Nepal Beat USA
Sikandar Raza delivered an all-rounder's masterclass to help Zimbabwe to a convincing six-wicket win over the Netherlands in their Cricket World Cup Group A qualifier on Tuesday. After first bagging four Dutch wickets, Raza then hit an entertaining unbeaten 102 off just 54 balls -- the fastest ever hundred in one-day internationals by a Zimbabwe player. The Netherlands had posted 315 for six wickets thanks to 88 from Vikramjit Singh, 83 from skipper Scott Edwards and 59 from Max O'Dowd.
Saqib Zulfiqar chipped in with a run-a-ball 34 not out to boost the total off their allotted 50 overs at the Harare Sports Club.
Raza proved to be the pick of the bowlers, picking up four wickets for 55 runs off his 10 overs.
Zimbabwe's run chase never seemed in doubt as Sean Williams hit a 58-ball 91 after openers Craig Ervine and Joylord Gumbie had contributed 50 and 40 runs respectively.
It was left to Raza to strike the winning runs, however, hoisting Logan van Beek over mid-off and into the stands for his eighth six in a spectacular display of power batting that had earlier seen him strike three consecutive sixes off Shariz Ahmad.
"I just wanted to go out there," said the 37-year-old Pakistan-born all-rounder, who sealed victory with 55 balls remaining.
"The platform was already set, I just wanted to stay humble and respect every ball but it was there, I went for it.
"As long as we win the game, we are happy and we are happy for each other's performance."
Group A's other match saw Nepal, who lost their opener to Zimbabwe, beat the United States by six wickets.
Karachi-born wicketkeeper Shayan Jahangir hit an unbeaten 100 to help the US team reach 207 all out off 49 overs after recovering from being 18 for four wickets.
Sushant Modani chipped in with 42 and Gajanand Singh 26, but the next best score was 12 and seven batsmen failed to make double digits as Karan Khatri Chhetri and Gulsan Jha shared seven wickets between them.
Bhim Sharki hit an unbeaten 77 while Kushal Bhurtel and Dipendra Singh Airee pitched in with 39 runs apiece as Nepal sealed the victory with ease, ending on 211/4 with 42 balls remaining.
It was a second defeat for the Americans after they went down to the West Indies in their opening game.
The action continues Wednesday, with Ireland facing Scotland and Oman taking on the United Arab Emirates in Group B matches at Bulawayo.
Only two of the 10 teams taking part in the three-week qualifier will make the World Cup to be played in India in October and November.

The official said they were not looking at rescheduling the match at the moment and they have been working closely with AIFF.
Earlier, the arrival of Pakistan football team for the SAFF tournament was thrown into limbo after the delay in processing the visa necessary to travel to India.
Pakistan were stuck in Mauritius where they had participated in the Four-Nation Cup tournament ahead of the SAFF competition.
Pakistan made a jittery preparation for the premier football tournament in South Asia as they finished last on the table with an all-lose record. Djibouti emerged champions in the tournament with an all-win record.
The neighbouring country's woes were deepened as the Indian Embassy in Mauritius could not process their visa request because of the weekend non-working days.
Pakistan Football Federation had blamed the national Sports Board for issuing the NOC to travel to India late while the Board countered the allegation stating that the PFF submitted the application for NOC after a considerable delay. PTI UNG KHS KHS

Italy Seal Nations League Bronze Against Hosts Netherlands
Italy sealed a third-place finish in the Nations League finals on Sunday, with a 3-2 win over disappointed hosts the Netherlands. Ronald Koeman's Dutch side started the week determined to win their first trophy since 1988's European Championship but they fell short on home territory in both matches, losing the semi-final against Croatia on Wednesday. Federico Dimarco and Davide Frattesi struck first half goals for Euro 2020 winners Italy in Enschede as the Netherlands started slowly. Steven Bergwijn pulled one back with 20 minutes remaining but Juventus forward Federico Chiesa quickly restored Italy's advantage to ensure they would take bronze, despite Georginio Wijnaldum pulling another goal back.
Koeman has now lost three of his four games since being reappointed Netherlands coach in January.
Inter Milan defender Dimarco sent a searing strike into the top corner after Giacomo Raspadori teed him up neatly in the sixth minute.
Neither player started in the semi-final defeat by Spain on Thursday, as Italy coach Roberto Mancini made several changes and returned to his favoured 4-3-3 formation.
It paid off, with Italy netting the second through Frattesi, one of only four who also faced La Roja from the outset.
The Sassuolo midfielder, 23, has been Italy's best player in the final four, another example of the promising crop of players coming through for the Azzurri.
Bergwijn injected some excitement into the game with a well-taken goal to give the Netherlands a chance, but soon Chiesa stroked a low finish past Justin Bijlow at the other end.
Wout Weghorst netted for the Oranje after a deflected free-kick fell into his path but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Netherlands showed plenty of spirit in the final stages and Wijnaldum fired home from Joey Veerman's threaded pass, but it was too little, too late.
Spain face Croatia in the final later Sunday in Rotterdam.

Ton-up Usman Khawaja Keeps England At Bay In Ashes Opener
Usman Khawaja ended his decade-long wait for a maiden Test hundred in England as he led an Australia recovery in the Ashes opener at Edgbaston on Saturday. Australia were struggling at 67-3 after Stuart Broad struck twice in two balls to remove David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne before England captain Ben Stokes captured the prize wicket of star batsman Steve Smith. But they had recovered to 311-5 at stumps on the second day of this five-match series, with opening batsman Khawaja 126 not out and wicketkeeper Alex Carey unbeaten on 52 in an unbroken stand of 91. That still left Australia 82 runs behind England's first-innings 393-8 declared built on Joe Root's 118 not out.
Australia captain Pat Cummins insisted Thursday his recently-crowned World Test champions had no need to emulate England's ultra-aggressive 'Bazball' style batting, saying: "Somewhere our batters might take 200 balls to get a hundred and that's totally fine."
His words were underlined by Khawaja's 199-ball hundred -- his 15th in Tests but seventh in 18 matches since he was recalled last year -- which he completed with a late-cut four off Stokes.
Khawaja's obdurate stay appeared to have ended when Broad bowled him for 112 in the first over with the new ball but replays revealed the veteran seamer had overstepped the crease for a marginal no-ball and Khawaja was reprieved.
Broad had earlier reduced Australia to 29-2 as he again got the better of Warner, whom he dismissed seven times during the drawn 2019 Ashes in England.
The left-hander had reached nine on an overcast morning favouring England's quicks when he chased a wide ball from Broad and inside edged into his stumps.
And the roars of the crowd became deafening next ball when Labuschagne, the world's top-ranked Test batsman, fell for a golden duck after edging a Broad outswinger that was brilliantly caught one-handed low down by diving wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.
Smith survived the hat-trick delivery but rarely looked comfortable in a 59-ball stay that didn't feature a single boundary.
Stokes's bowling fitness had been called into question by a longstanding left knee injury, but the lively all-rounder struck when he rapped Smith on the back foot with a nip-back ball.
The batsman's review upheld South African umpire Marais Erasmus's decision and Smith, whose twin centuries in the Ashes opener at Edgbaston four years ago powered Australia to a 251-run win, was out for 16.
But as the ball got older and conditions for batting eased, Khawaja and Travis Head checked England's progress with a fourth-wicket stand of 81.
Both left-handers went after Moeen Ali, each hitting the recalled off-spinner for sixes on his Birmingham home ground.
But Stokes kept Moeen, in for the injured Jack Leach, going in what was the bowler's first Test in nearly two years since he 'retired' from all red-ball cricket.
His faith was rewarded when Head, fresh from a hundred in Australia's WTC final win over India at The Oval last week, fell for a typically brisk 50 off 63 balls after dragging a drive off Moeen to Zak Crawley at midwicket.
Australia's 148-4 should have become 148-5 when Cameron Green, on a second-ball nought, charged at a sharply-turning Moeen delivery only for Bairstow to miss a clear stumping opportunity. Moeen eventually bowled Green for 38 but only after the all-rounder had put on 72 with Khawaja.
Bairstow, who made a run-a-ball 78 on Friday, also dropped Alex Carey, on 26 off occasional spinner Root, having been chosen as England's keeper ahead of Ben Foakes -- arguably a better gloveman but not as good a batsman.

1st Test Day 1: Australia Trail England By 379 Runs At Stumps
Joe Root ended his Ashes century-drought as England made 393-8 before skipper Ben Stokes's bold declaration on the opening day of the first Test against Australia at Edgbaston on Friday. England were in danger of squandering the advantage of winning the toss on a good pitch as they fell to 176-5 after losing two wickets in quick succession. But former England captain Root was 118 not out -- the 32-year-old's first Ashes hundred in eight years and 17 Tests -- when Stokes called a halt to give his side 20 minutes in the field against Australia before stumps.
In the corresponding Ashes campaign four years ago, Australia opener David Warner averaged a meagre 9.50 in 10 innings and was dismissed seven times by veteran England bowler Stuart Broad.
But despite Broad taking the new ball on Friday, Warner survived to be eight not out in a total of 14-0 at stumps.
Earlier, Root received excellent support from Yorkshire team-mate Jonny Bairstow, who made a run-a-ball 78 during a sixth-wicket partnership of 121.
Australia's Nathan Lyon was taunted by sections of a capacity 25,000 crowd.
But he still took 4-149 as he moved to within nine wickets of 500 in Tests after bowling 29 overs -- an unusually high number for an off-spinner on the first day of a Test.
England have won 11 of their last 13 Tests, with an aggressive approach, dubbed 'Bazball' in reference to coach Brendon McCullum's nickname, exemplified by the aggressive run-scoring that was a hallmark of Bairstow's innings.
They signalled their intentions from Friday's first ball, with Zak Crawley driving Australia captain Pat Cummins through the covers for four in elegant fashion.
Recently crowned World Test champions Australia, however, hit back when Ben Duckett (12) was caught behind off recalled paceman Josh Hazlewood.
And Crawley fell for 61 off what became the last ball of the session, when paceman Scott Boland produced a superb delivery that leapt off a length and brushed the glove, with England 124-3 at lunch.
Harry Brook was out for 32 in bizarre fashion when he shouldered arms to Lyon, with the ball looping off the thigh pad and spinning into the stumps after Brook had lost sight of it.
Stokes then lasted just eight balls, caught behind on the drive off Hazlewood.
Australia thought they had the prized wicket of Root when he was given out lbw to Lyon, but the batsman's immediate review confirmed he had gloved the ball.
Bairstow, who hit twin hundreds in England's seven-wicket win over India at Edgbaston last year, thrashed Hazlewood for four.
But having been dropped by a diving Alex Carey on 68, Bairstow was dismissed when he charged at Lyon only to be stumped.
Moeen, in his first Test for nearly two years since retiring from red-ball cricket, had made 18 -- including a pulled six off Cummins -- when, just like Bairstow, he was needlessly stumped off Lyon.
But Root, who reverse swept both Boland and Cummins for extraordinary sixes, took a single off Lyon to complete a 145-ball hundred that included seven fours.
England are bidding for a first Ashes series win since 2015, with Australia aiming for a first Ashes campaign victory in England in 22 years.

Mbappe Says PSG 'My Only Option For Now' As Transfer Saga Continues
Kylian Mbappe on Thursday said staying at Paris Saint-Germain was his "only option for now" after the France superstar told the club he would not be extending his contract beyond 2024. "I've already answered this question, I said that my goal was to carry on at the club, to stay at PSG, it's my only option for now," Mbappe told a news conference ahead of Friday's Euro 2024 qualifier against Gibraltar in Portugal. Mbappe earlier this week sent a letter to the club confirming he would not take up an option to remain at the French champions until 2025.
"I didn't think a letter could kill or offend someone," Mbappe said on Friday.
He told AFP he had never discussed extending his contract with PSG beyond next year.
That immediately raised the prospect of the 24-year-old forward, one of the most coveted players in world football, following Lionel Messi out of Parc des Princes this summer.
Mbappe said he wasn't surprised by suggestions PSG could look to cash in by selling him now, rather than allowing him to leave for nothing at the end of next season.
"No, there's not much that shocks me," he said.
The France captain also denied interfering with the national team's preparations by sending the letter four days before the Gibraltar fixture.
"I accept everything, people can talk, criticise, I understand," he said. "People don't have all the ins and outs. I know why I do what I do and I say what I say. There's no problem with that."
"I have a responsiblity as captain. A few noises won't make me run away from this responsibility. It's not my temperament to run away," he added.
Mbappe also touched upon comments from President Emmanuel Macron, who on Wednesday said he would "try to push" for the player to stay in France.
"He wants for me to stay in Paris and my goal is to stay, so we're on the same wavelength," said Mbappe.
After playing Gibraltar in Faro, World Cup runners-ups France host Greece on Monday in Group B of Euro 2024 qualifying.
Mbappe was named as France's new captain before they began Euro qualifying in March with wins over the Netherlands and Ireland.
With the Dutch currently focused on the Nations League finals, France can all but wrap up qualification by claiming back-to-back victories.

French President Macron To 'Try To Push' For Kylian Mbappe To Stay At PSG
French President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday he would "try to push" for Kylian Mbappe to stay at Paris Saint-Germain. Asked by a young PSG fan on the sidelines of the VivaTech exhibition in Paris, Macron said he had "no scoop" on the future of Mbappe. "But I will try to push for" the France captain to stay, Macron continued in a light-hearted exchange. Mbappe's future at PSG is in serious doubt after the striker told AFP he had never discussed extending his contract with the club beyond next year.
Mbappe and his entourage spoke out the day after he sent a letter to the club confirming he would not take up an option to remain at the French champions until 2025.
That immediately raised the spectre of the 24-year-old forward, one of the most coveted players in world football, following Lionel Messi out of Parc des Princes this summer because if Qatar-owned PSG do not cash in by selling him now, he could leave for nothing at the end of next season.
Should Macron talk with Mbappe, it would not be the first time the pair have brought up his future in the Paris club.
Last year, Mbappe made the startling revelation that he had talked over his potential transfer to Real Madrid with Macron, saying he appreciated the "good advice" of the French president, who wanted the PSG star to stay in France.

KL Rahul Checks In At NCA For Extensive Rehabilitation Programme
Senior India batter KL Rahul has checked in here at the National Cricket Academy to start his extensive rehabilitation programme post a thigh surgery with an eye to make a return during the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka in September ahead of the marquee ODI World Cup. Rahul, who captained Lucknow Super Giants, was injured during the IPL and had to pull out of the tournament and the subsequent World Test Championship final after a thigh surgery was advised. Rahul underwent a successful operation in the United Kingdom and on Tuesday posted pictures of NCA on his social media account with a tweet "home".
Rahul, who bats in the middle-order in ODI cricket and also dons the big gloves in the 50-over format, is an important member in the ODI set-up in the absence of Rishabh Pant, who is also recovering from a horrific car crash in December last year.
The 31-year-old has scored 2,642 runs in 47 Tests, 1,986 runs in 54 ODIs and 2,265 runs in 72 T20Is with 14 international hundreds across formats.

"Incredible Feeling": Djokovic After Winning Record 23rd Grand Slam Title
Novak Djokovic created history on Sunday when he captured a record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title with a third French Open triumph, reinforcing his case to be crowned the greatest player of all time. The 36-year-old Serb brushed off an early wobble to defeat Casper Ruud of Norway 7-6 (7/1), 6-3, 7-5 and snap the tie of 22 Slams he shared with career-long rival Rafael Nadal. "It's an incredible feeling to win 23. I'm beyond grateful and blessed to be standing here with so many incredible achievements," said Djokovic as Nadal immediately described his rival's victory as "an incredible achievement".
Victory for the third time in Paris, after 2016 and 2021, adds to Djokovic's 10 Australian Open titles, seven at Wimbledon and three at the US Open.
"It's no coincidence that my 23rd Grand Slam title has come here because it has been the hardest one for me to win in my career. I am very emotional right now and I am very, very proud," added Djokovic who fired 11 aces and 52 winners in total past Ruud.
Djokovic is the first man to win all four majors at least three times and is once again halfway to the first calendar Grand Slam since Rod Laver in 1969.
"Your skill and unwavering mental fortitude on all surfaces is astonishing," tweeted Laver.
Only Margaret Court and Serena Williams in women's tennis have managed to rack up 23 Grand Slam titles. Court's all-time mark of 24 will now be in Djokovic's sights at Wimbledon next month.
There is little sign of Djokovic slowing down. He is now the oldest French Open champion but 11 of his Slam trophies have now been won after he turned 30.
On Monday, he will reclaim the world number one ranking and start his 388th week in top spot.
"Many congrats on this amazing achievement. 23 is a number that just a few years back was impossible to think about, and you made it! Enjoy it with your family and team!" tweeted Nadal, a 14-time Roland Garros winner who missed this year's tournament through injury.
Ruud added sportingly: "Novak, another day, another record for you. And another day you rewrite tennis history once again."
The sense of Sunday's occasion certainly attracted sports A-listers.
NFL legend Tom Brady watched from the Djokovic box, football stars Kylian Mbappe and Zlatan Ibrahimovic sat side by side in the VIP area which also accommodated former world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, a regular this weekend.
Place in history
Djokovic was playing in his seventh French Open final and boasted a 4-0 career record over Ruud, not having lost a single set.
However, the fourth-ranked Norwegian was the more composed of the two at the start, sprinting out of the blocks for a 2-0 lead when Djokovic shanked an overhead.
It was to be Ruud's only service break all afternoon.
Ruud, the 2022 runner-up to Nadal, stretched to 3-0 and 4-1 before Djokovic retrieved the break in the seventh game when his opponent buried an easy smash into the net with an open court begging.
It came at the end of a lung-busting 28-shot rally.
Djokovic missed a break point in the ninth game, tumbling to the red clay as he chased down a Ruud drive.
His frustration boiled over when he angrily accused umpire Damien Dumusois of rushing the players between changeovers on a heavy, humid afternoon in the French capital.
Fired up, he then raced through the tiebreak, sealing the opener with a running forehand.
Tellingly, that was Djokovic's sixth tiebreak at this French Open and in none of them had he committed a single unforced error in the 55 points contested.
'I can be a nightmare'
Despite being Djokovic's junior by 12 years, Ruud, who also lost the 2022 US Open final to Carlos Alcaraz, suddenly looked spent.
Djokovic broke for 2-0 in the second set and despite Ruud saving two set points in the eighth game, the Serb moved closer to his dream.
Ruud saved a break point in the third game of the third set before Djokovic was hit with a warning for taking too long between points.
But he wasn't thrown out of his stride.
Djokovic broke for love at 6-5 and sealed his place in history when Ruud went wide after three hours and 13 minutes.
The champion saluted his box where coach Goran Ivanisevic and wife Jelena sat.
"I know I can be a nightmare," said Djokovic. "I want to thank you first of all for patience and tolerance and that stands out. I was really torturing you so I appreciate you being my rock, and my support and really believing in me."

Gill Posts Cryptic Tweet About Controversial Catch, Uses 'Facepalm' Emoji
Shubman Gill took to social media to post a screenshot of Cameron Green's controversial catch to dismiss him on Day 4 of the World Test Championship (WTC) Final at The Oval on Saturday. Experts were divided over whether Green was able to complete the catch properly at third slip with some videos and pictures suggesting that the ball touched the ground when his hand made impact. However, the third umpire thought that the catch was fair and Gill was given out. The in-form India opener posted a picture of the catch on Twitter along with a cryptic caption which included the 'facepalm' emoji.

A focussed Virat Kohli stood between Australia and World Test Championship mace as India require another 280 runs to create history on what promises to be an intriguing final day of the summit clash.
Kohli was batting on 44 off 60 balls and had Ajinkya Rahane (20 batting) for company during a stand of 71 for the fourth wicket as India ended the fourth day on 164 for 3 in pursuit of world record chase of 444.
Having been set a mammoth target, India lost Shubman Gill (18 off 19) to a contentious catch before skipper Rohit Sharma (43 off 60) and Cheteshwar Pujara (27 off 47) brought about their own downfall to make it 93 for three in 31st over.
Australia had declared their second innings at 270 for 8 midway into the afternoon session after an unbeaten 66 from Alex Carey.

WTC Final, Day 2: Top-order Failure Leaves India With Mountain To Climb
The failure of India's famed top-order against a high-quality pace attack in a pressure game put Australia in firm control of the World Test Championship final in London on Thursday. Ravindra Jadeja (48 off 51 balls) and Ajinkya Rahane (29 batting off 71) offered hope to the partisan Indian supporters at The Oval with a 71-run stand off 100 balls before the former fell to Nathan Lyon 20 minutes before close of play. India were reeling at 151 for five at stumps in response to Australia's first innings score of 469, trailing by 318 runs.
While the Indian bowlers failed to use the bouncer effectively on day one, the likes of Shubman Gill (13) and Cheteshwar Pujara (14) committed the cardinal sin of misjudging the line and length on a pitch with variable bounce.
Credit should also go to the relentless Australian pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Scott Boland, who got much more out of The Oval surface than their Indian counterparts.
Australia added 142 runs to their overnight total for the loss of seven wickets before being bowled out one hour into the afternoon session. Mohammed Siraj cleaned up the tail and was the pick of India's bowlers with four wickets.
Leaving the ball is a key element of batting in English conditions and that is where Gill and Pujara were found wanting. The in-form Gill showed promise before he inexplicably decided to leave an incoming ball from Boland, leaving his stumps rattled.
Pujara, who had the advantage of being in England well before his teammates arrived, offered no shot to a length ball from Cameron Green that cut in sharply from fourth stump.
The slide began with the fall of skipper Rohit Sharma (15) who missed an angled in ball from Cummins in the sixth over to be trapped lbw.
Indian superstar Virat Kohli (14) got a snorter from Mitchell Starc that he could not do much about, leaving India at 71 for four. Rahane and Jadeja tried to hang in there but the Aussie pacers were constantly asking questions.
Rahane also had some luck going his way as he was adjudged lbw off a Cummins no ball when he was batting on 17.
Jadeja showed good intent with his innings comprising seven fours and a fine flick off Boland that went all the way for a six.
India were 37 for two in 10 overs at the tea break with the openers already back in the hut.
After the lunch break, Alex Carey pushed Australia past 450 with a 48 off 69 balls. His innings included a six off Jadeja but an attempted reverse sweep the following ball led to his downfall, trapping him in front of the stumps.
India got themselves back in the game with four wickets in the morning session but Australia maintained their upper hand by reaching 422 for seven at lunch, following Steve Smith's 31st hundred.
Resuming the day on 327 for three, Travis Head (163 off 174) and Smith (121 off 268) walked into the middle under bright sunshine at The Oval.
Smith, who was on 95 overnight, got two freebies on the pads from Mohammed Siraj in the first over of the day and he happily put them away for consecutive boundaries to complete his seventh hundred in England and third at the venue.
India were guilty of not using the short ball tactic early enough on the opening day but Siraj went for that from the get on Thursday. Mohammed Shami too tried to mix it up with an odd bouncer but was not able to get the same zip from the surface as Siraj.
While Smith was not bothered by India's tactic, Head looked in a bit of discomfort.
Siraj banged one short onto his body in the sixth over of the day and Head walked across the stumps to pull it but ended up edging it to wicketkeeper K S Bharat, ending an epic 285-run stand.
Cameron Green was the next to go as he went for an expansive drive off a full ball from Shami but ended up being caught at second slip by an alert Gill.
The prized wicket of Smith came out of nowhere as he dragged an innocuous ball from Shardul Thakur back on to his stumps. It was Thakur's first ball of the day, highlighting his uncanny ability to provide a breakthrough out of the blue.
A brilliant piece of fielding from substitute Axar Patel got India their fourth wicket of the day as his one-handed direct hit from mid off left Mitchell Starc well short of his ground.
