Wrestling Row: WFI Chief Appears Before Probe Panel, Denies Allegations
The sidelined WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on Tuesday appeared before the government-appointed oversight committee, which is investigating into sexual abuse allegations against him, and outrightly rejected all the charges. The Committee, led by legendary boxer MC Mary Kom, was formed on January 23 to investigate into the claims made by country's top wrestlers that Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) boss Brij Bhushan has sexually harassed several women wrestlers, intimidates the athletes and run the sport body in an autocratic manner.
Brij Bhushan arrived with his 20-odd supporters for the meeting which went on for nearly three hours.
"Brij Bhushan appeared before the committee today. He straightaway denied all the allegations. He said he never did anything wrong," a sports ministry source told PTI.
Brij Bhushan, however, evaded the waiting media at the SAI headquarters here, saying the investigation is still on and he won't like to make any comment at this point of time.
The allegations were levelled by prominent grapplers such as Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Ravi Dahiya.
The wrestlers have already deposed before the committee.
In January, the country's top wrestlers had staged a three-day sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar, demanding that Brij Bhushan be removed and WFI be disbanded.
The BJP MP was later asked to step aside till the completion of the probe into his alleged misconduct.
The Mary Kom-led committee has former wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, former shuttler Trupti Murgunde, SAI member Radhica Sreeman and Rajesh Rajagopalan, ex-CEO, Target Olympic Podium Scheme and CWG gold medallist Babita Phogat as its members.
The wrestlers have also alleged that one member of the committee, apparently 2012 London Olympic bronze medallist Dutt, is leaking sensitive information related to the probe with media.
They feel that Dutt is siding with the WFI boss.
India lost the hosting rights of the Asian Championship after wrestlers submitted a written complaint to UWW, the world governing body of the game, about the alleged misconduct of the WFI chief.
The event will now be hosted in Astana in April.

Novak Djokovic Says 'Surreal' To Break Steffi Graf's World Rankings Record
Novak Djokovic says breaking Steffi Graf's record of 377 weeks at number one in the rankings on Monday is "surreal" and that he is proud to surpass one of the sport's all-time greats. The Serb will spend his 378th week at the top of men's tennis competing in Dubai, where he will play his first tournament since capturing a 10th Australian Open crown and record-equalling 22nd Grand Slam title last month. "I still want more achievements," Djokovic told reporters in Dubai on Sunday. "I'm driven by the goals. I'm as dedicated to the sport really as anybody else.
"Of course, it's surreal in a way to be that many weeks world number, to match Steffi Graf, who is one of the all-time greats of our sport, both men and women. Just being amongst these legendary names is flattering. I'm very proud of it."
Undefeated in all 12 matches he has contested so far this season, Djokovic says he has been pain-free for the past week, having recovered from a muscle tear in his left hamstring he had sustained in Australia.
"I'm getting closer to a hundred percent. Still not there in terms of the game itself, how I feel on the court. But the important thing is that there is no pain. I don't have a hindrance to the way I move on the court," declared the 35-year-old.
Djokovic will begin his Dubai campaign against Czech qualifier Tomas Machac on Tuesday, where the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Andy Murray are also expected to take the court.
Murray, who is one week older than Djokovic and has been the Serb's rival since their early teen years, is coming off a stunning week in Doha, where he battled through four three-setters before losing to Medvedev in the final.
It has been a theme for the British former world number one, who also put on heroic displays at the Australian Open last month.
"What is happening now this year with his match points saved in literally every match he plays, the amount of hours he spent on the court since the beginning of the year, particularly in Australia, is just something you must admire and say 'chapeau' because of everything he has gone through with his hip," said Djokovic of Murray.
- 'Great guy Murray' -
"You have to note that he has an artificial hip and he's moving the way he does. He's constantly looking to improve and to get back to the highest level, which it seems like he's been doing. He's just rising in the rankings. The level is better and better.
"I'm very happy for him because he's a great guy, respects the sport, works very, very hard. So very committed, he deserves his success."
Djokovic has also been paying attention to the recent exploits of Chinese players on the ATP tour.
There are two Chinese men ranked in the top 100 - Wu Yibing and Zhang Zhizhen - with teenager Shang Juncheng not far behind.
Djokovic said he always knew it was only a matter of time before China's men made their way up the rankings the way Chinese women have on the WTA tour.
"I'm happy for China's tennis. It's important. It's important that a country like China is doing well in men's tennis, as well. I think for us globally, as part of tennis ecosystem, it's great news," he added.

Potter 'Can't Rely' On Chelsea Board's Support After Tottenham Defeat
Chelsea manager Graham Potter acknowledged he cannot rely on the support of the club's board for much longer after a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham on Sunday heaped more pressure on him. Goals from Oliver Skipp and Harry Kane consolidated Spurs' place in the Premier League top four as they opened up a four-point lead over fifth-placed Newcastle, although the Magpies have two games in hand.
Chelsea remain 10th with their chances of Champions League football next season now seemingly dependent on an unlikely run to win the European Cup for a third time.
Despite splashing over 163;500 million pounds ($600 million) on new players this season, Potter's men have now won just twice in 15 games in all competitions.
"I know the responsibility," said Potter. "(The results) are not good enough for this club. I'm not happy with them. I take full responsibility for those results."
Chelsea's new owners have so far remained steadfast in their support of Potter.
But patience must be wearing thin and the Blues chairman and co-owner Todd Boehly was in attendance to watch another toothless display from his club at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
"If results aren't good enough, which they aren't at the moment, you can't rely on support forever," added Potter.
"My job is to keep going, to try and change the moment. The players are hurting. It's a tough moment for us."
Chelsea have scored only one goal in their last six games and did not show much fight for their beleaguered boss after falling behind just seconds into the second half.
Neither side hit their stride in a bad-tempered first period, which the visitors were lucky to finish with 11 men.
After consulting with his assistant, referee Stuart Attwell showed Hakim Ziyech a straight red card for a push into the face of Emerson Royal.
However, Attwell then reversed the decision after viewing the incident on the pitchside monitor.
Chelsea did not take advantage of that let-off as they fell behind just 19 seconds after the break.
Kepa Arrizabalaga saved Emerson's initial effort, but the Spanish goalkeeper should have done better than turning Skipp's shot in off the underside of the bar for his first Spurs goal.
Tottenham were again without their manager Antonio Conte as the former Chelsea boss recovers from emergency surgery to remove his gallbladder, but Spurs have a 100 percent record with his assistant Cristian Stellini in charge.
"Our desire was this, to win, play a great game and to fight for every ball," said Stellini, who added he expects Conte to return to London this week.
"We are happy for the fans, the club and of course for us and Antonio who is still at home."
Kane made sure of his side's first league win over Chelsea in nine attempts when the England captain swept home Eric Dier's flick from Son Heung-min's corner eight minutes from time.

Arsenal Extend Premier League Lead, Leeds Climb Out Of Bottom Three
Arsenal opened up a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League thanks to a 1-0 win at Leicester on Saturday as Leeds beat Southampton 1-0 to give new boss Javi Gracia a winning start. The Gunners snapped a four-game winless streak with two late goals at Aston Villa last week to take back control of the title race after briefly being usurped at the top of the table by Manchester City.
Mikel Arteta's men needed no such drama at the King Power and should have run out far more convincing winners.
"For the amount of time we dominated ball possession, territory and the amount of situations we had in the final third, we should have created much more and scored more goals," said Arteta.
"When you don't, you have to be exceptional in your defensive work and we conceded one shot. Defensively we were outstanding."
Arteta's decision to start both Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard in the front three at the expense of Eddie Nketiah paid dividends. Trossard had a brilliant first half strike into the top corner controversially ruled out by a VAR review for a foul by Ben White on Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward.
But Martinelli was not to be denied one minute into the second period when he coolly slotted home from Trossard's pass. Bukayo Saka had a second goal ruled out for offside as Arsenal failed to turn their domination into a more convincing scoreline.
However, they did enough to pile the pressure on second-placed City ahead of their trip to Bournemouth later on Saturday.
Leeds end long wait for win
Leeds had not won a league game since before the World Cup break, a run which saw Jesse Marsch sacked. But they snapped that streak in a clash between the bottom two before kick-off at Elland Road.
Junior Firpo scored the only goal 13 minutes from time to lift Leeds out of the relegation zone. "The club needed it after 10 games without a win," said Gracia after his first match in charge.
"I'm very happy for everyone who works for the club, the fans and especially the players because they were working without rewards."
West Ham were the other big winners of the day in the battle to beat the drop as four goals in the final 20 minutes potentially saved David Moyes' job in a 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
According to reports this week, the former Manchester United manager faced the sack if the Hammers lost. Two goals in three minutes from Danny Ings transformed the mood around the London Stadium before Declan Rice and Michail Antonio sealed West Ham's second league win since October.
Everton slipped back into the bottom three after losing 2-0 at home to Aston Villa.
Ollie Watkins' penalty and Emi Buendia's strike condemned Sean Dyche to a first home defeat since taking charge of the Toffees.

David Rudisha Inspires Indian Marathoners To Qualify For Asian Games
Kenya's legendary world 800m record holder and double Olympic champion David Rudisha has come to New Delhi to inspire a host of Indian marathon and long distance runners. The simplicity of the genius Rudisha is awe-inspiring. Speaking at the pre-marathon press conference, Kenya's legendary middle-distance runner pointed out that this was the last opportunity and platform for India's top marathoners to win their berths for the Hangzhou Games in September.
"The weather is perfect. I believe the flat course is also ideal for a marathon. So, remain confident, don't lose sight of your targets, and give it your all," he said.
"The marathon is a very special race, the oldest sport in the world," he said, admiring the sport that requires extreme resilience and endurance.
"I can imagine how tough running 42 kilometre is. My event lasts just 1 minute and 40 seconds," Rudisha, who is the only athlete to ever run the 800m in 1 minute and 41 seconds, added, amidst thunderous applause.
The Apollo Tyres New Delhi National Marathon on Sunday is a huge opportunity for Indian marathon runners to qualify for the coming Hangzhou Asian Games. However, it is highly unlikely that many athletes would meet the qualifying standards, as the mark appears to be better than the best of most of the athletes. The qualifying time for men's in the Asian Games is 2:15:00, while the time for women is 2:40:00.
World 800m record holder and double Olympic champion David Rudisha urged India's top athletes to go all out in the Apollo Tyres New Delhi National Marathon on Sunday (February 26) and qualify for the Asian Games later this year.
As many as 16,000 runners will be competing in the New Delhi Marathon, organised by NEB Sports under the aegis of the Athletics Federation of India and Fit India. The iconic run will cover key landmarks in the heart of the capital, including Humayun's Tomb, Lodhi Garden, and Khan Market.
India's highest-ranked marathon runner, AB Belliyappa, will lead a pack of 32 men and 7 women elite athletes as they aim to breach the target (2.15 minutes for men and 2.40 minutes for women) for the Asian Games.
"The NDM is run on perhaps one of the best courses in India. Our aim is to facilitate the elite athletes, with 28 stations for hydration and cheering teams en route to encourage them," Race Director Nagraj Adiga of NEB Sports revealed.
Vikram Bangriya, who recently won the Bangladesh Marathon 2023 in 2:18:28, is another strong contender.
Belliyappa from Karnataka had a time of 2:16:51 in Valencia 2022 and will need to shave nearly 2 minutes off his time to get to Hangzhou in September. Anish Thapa Magar, who won the silver medal in the 2022 New Delhi Marathon with a timing of 2:16:41, will also fancy his chances.
Srinu Bugatha (2:14:59; 2021), Govindan Lakshmanan (10,000 and 5,000 Asian Champion; 2017), and Man Singh (2:16:58; 2023) will also be keenly watched. Among women, Jyoti Gawate (2:45:48; 2019) will be India's best bet.
The runners will participate across the four categories of Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K and 5K.
The marathon has prize money of 3 lakh INR for the top three men and women, while the winners of the half marathon will get 1.12 lakh INR, and the prize money for the podium finishers of the 10K run is 35,000 INR.

Brits, Khaka Lead Stunning South Africa Into Women's T20 World Cup Final
Tazmin Brits and Ayabonga Khaka inspired a shock six-run victory for South Africa against England in their Women's T20 World Cup semi-final at Newlands in Cape Town on Friday. Brits hit 68 in a South African total of 164 for four, then held four catches, two of them exceptional, as England were restricted to 158 for eight. South Africa will meet defending champions and heavy favourites Australia in the final at the same venue on Sunday.
Medium-pace bowler Khaka took three wickets in the 18th over to put the target just beyond England's reach.
Fast bowler Shabnim Ismail made the first two breakthroughs after England made a fast start, then bowled captain Heather Knight in the final over to snuff out England's last hope.
Laura Wolvaardt and Brits launched South Africa's best batting performance of the tournament.
They followed up their unbeaten century opening stand in the last group match against Bangladesh by putting on 96 for the first wicket in 13.4 overs.
Wolvaardt was the senior partner, striking five fours and a six in making 53 off 44 balls before she was caught at backward point off left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone.
Brits then took over, hitting powerfully to score 68 off 55 balls. She hit six fours as well as two sixes in the space of three deliveries from leg-spinner Sarah Glenn.
England's Danni Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley raced to a 53-run opening stand in five overs before Ismail had Dunkley caught by Brits at midwicket for 28.
Two balls later Brits dived to take a sensational catch in the same position to dismiss Alice Capsey for nought.
Brits held another diving catch to dismiss Wyatt (34) at backward square leg and then calmly held a high hit from Nat Sciver-Brunt (40) at long-on.
Australia defeated India by five runs in another semi-final thriller on Thursday.

"The Way I Got Runout...": Harmanpreet On India's T20 World Cup Heartbreak
The Indian women's cricket team fell at the penultimate hurdle as Australia book their seventh successive Women's T20 World Cup final spot. Despite a disappointing fielding performance, India did well with the bat in phases to come close to Australia's total of 172 runs. Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues kept India's hopes alive before the skipper got run out in the most bizarre fashion. When Harmanpreet was asked about her dismissal, she admitted that there can't be a more 'unlucky' way to get dismissed.
It was the 15th over of India's chase, with Harmapreet keeping the team afloat. During the 4the delivery of the over, Harmanpreet's bat got stuck into the ground while running. The batter was found just inches shy of her crease as the bails were dislodged.
The incident changed the momentum of the game, with Australia taking the driving seat.
Speaking of the incident, Harmanpreet said that she couldn't have been unluckier.
"Can't be unluckier than this, to get that momentum back when me and Jemi were batting. And to lose after that, we didn't expect this today. The way I got runout, can't be unluckier than that. Putting in the effort was more important. We discussed about fighting till the last ball. The result didn't go our way, but I am happy with the way we played in this tournament. We know we have a good batting line up even if we lose early wickets," she said.
Harmanpreet also credited Jemimah Rodrigues for her performance that saw her score a quick-fire 43 off 24.
"Need to give credit to Jemi for the way she batted today. She got us the momentum we were looking for. Happy to see such performances. Happy to see them play their natural game. We even though we didn't play to our strengths, we reached the semis," said the India captain.
At the end, Harmanpree also confessed that India were poor in the field.
"We gave those easy catches away. Got to take those when you want to win. We misfielded. We can only learn from these lessons and not repeat the mistakes," she concluded.

Aishwary Pratap Singh Wins Gold In ISSF World Cup
Olympian Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar claimed the gold medal in the men's individual 50m rifle 3 positions competition at the ISSF World Cup in Cairo on Wednesday as India continued their dominance in the tournament. This was India's sixth medal, including four gold, in the tournament as the country strengthened its position at the top of the medals tally. The 22-year-old Tomar, who had also won a gold in the Changwon World Cup last year, won 16-6 in the gold-medal contest to comfortably beat Austria's Alexander Schmirl.
Tomar was placed second in the ranking round, with a total score of 406.4, while Schmirl was at the top with 407.9.
Earlier, the Indian had topped the qualification after aggregating 588 over the three stages of kneeling, prone and standing.
Akhil Sheoran, another Indian participating in the event, was second in the qualification with 587.
This was the Indian's second individual World Cup gold, the first coming in South Korea.
Speaking after the event, Tomar said, "I had not performed well twice earlier at this range so this time I was determined to go back with a medal." Asked what was his mindset after a slow start in the ranking round, he said, "It did not affect me much. As I said, I was very determined and was confident that I could always come back in my favourite 'standing' position and that's what happened." Tomar first topped the qualification round with a score of 588 after 20 shots each in the kneeling, prone and standing positions. He had teammate Sheoran for company in the ranking round.
The Indian duo began slow in the ranking round with Tomar sixth and Sheoran eighth after the first five kneeling position shots.
After the end of the allocated 10 shots in the second prone position however, both had moved up with Sheoran in second and Tomar in fifth. All the while the Austrian Schmirl was leading the match and did so till the end of the ranking round.
It changed dramatically after the first five standing position shots, as India number one Tomar got up to second, just 0.5 behind Schmirl who was still leading.
Sheoran was down to fifth and eventually bowed out in seventh place after 30 shots. After 40 shots both the Austrian and the Indian held on to the top two positions to set up a gold medal clash.
In the gold medal round, which is basically a race to 16 points with two points being awarded to the winner of each single-shot series, Tomar took the first series.
However, it remained tight with the scores reading 4-4 and then 6-6 before the Indian broke away with some sensational shooting to close out the match.
A timeout taken by the Austrian at 6-12 did nothing to break Tomar's momentum.
Rhythm finishes outside podium
In the day's first medal event, India's Rhythm Sangwan, who had qualified for the ranking rounds after shooting 589 in the women's 25m pistol, could not make the final four medal round.
She had shot 295 to lead the first precision round on Tuesday and then 294 in the rapid-fire round to qualify second behind Doreen Vennekamp of Germany.
Rhythm bowed out in the second ranking round match, finishing fourth with nine hits out of 20. Hungary's Veronika Major won gold in the event.
Manu Bhaker and Esha Singh shot 571 and 570 to finish 32nd and 34th respectively.

Nida Dar Now Leading Wicket-taker In Women's T20I, Pakistan Lose
Veteran Pakistan spinner Nida Dar became the highest wicket-taker in the history of women's T20I cricket on Tuesday. The 36-year-old accomplished the landmark during Pakistan's final Group 2 match against England in the ongoing ICC Women's T20 World Cup. In the match, Dar ended with figures of 1/47 in four overs. She picked up the wicket of England skipper Heather Knight for just four runs. In 130 matches, she has 126 wickets at an average of 18.18 and an economy rate of 5.47. Her best bowling figures in the format are 5/21.
Other leading wicket-takers in the format behind Dar are Anisa Mohammed (West Indies, 125 wickets), Megan Schutt (Australia, 122 wickets), Ellyse Perry (Australia, 122 wickets) and Shabnim Ismail (South Africa, 117 wickets).
Coming to the match, England posted 213/5 after electing to bat first. They were reduced to 33/2 before the conclusion of the powerplay. A 74-run stand between Danni Wyatt (59 off 33 balls) and Nat-Sciver Brunt brought England back in the game. After a couple more quick wickets, England was 113/4. From that point, Brunt and wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones (47 off 31 balls) stitched a quick century stand. Brunt finished with an unbeaten 81 in 40 balls, with 12 fours and a six.
Fatima Sana (2/44) finished as the leading bowler for Pakistan. Dar, Sadia Iqbal and Tuba Hassan finished with a wicket each.
Chasing 214, Pakistan was never in the game and finished at 99/9 in their 20 overs, losing the game by 114 runs, the biggest margin in Women's T20 WC history. Tuba Hassan top-scored with 28 runs.
Katherine Sciver-Brunt (2/14) and Charlie Dean (2/28) were the standout bowlers for England. Sophie Ecclestone, Nat Sciver, Sarah Glenn took a wicket each.
Nat Sciver won the 'Player of the Match' award for her all-around performance.
England has finished the group stage on top of Group 2 with four wins in four games and eight points. Pakistan finishes at fourth in the group with just one win in four games and two points.

Qatari Bid For Manchester United Poses Questions Over PSG's Future
The announcement that a consortium led by a Qatari banker are bidding to buy Manchester United has raised questions about the potential impact for Paris Saint-Germain, who were taken over by Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) more than a decade ago.
QSI, a subsidiary of the Qatar Investment Authority, the Gulf state's sovereign wealth fund, gained control of the French club in 2011 for just 70 million euros ($74.7m at the current exchange rate).
PSG have since become a vehicle through which Qatar can project soft power -- under QSI's ownership, they are now not just France's dominant club but a leading name on the European stage and a global brand.
More than 1.5 billion euros has been splashed on transfers over the last dozen years, including the two biggest fees in the history of the game for Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in 2017, although all that money has not yet delivered Champions League glory in which Qatar could bask.
But now the tiny, gas-rich state is aiming even higher with its sights set on United, the most successful club in the history of the most powerful league in the world, with commercial and broadcasting income far greater than what can be generated in the French top flight.
The bid, led by the chairman of the Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB), Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani, is believed to be worth between four and six billion euros, according to several sources.
The QIB is owned by Qatar's sovereign wealth fund.
"When you have an offer from someone who is a member of the wider Al-Thani family, it inevitably means it is an offer from the state," Jean-Baptiste Guegan, a lecturer and specialist in geopolitics in sport, told AFP.
"This means nothing has been done without the approval of the emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani."
However, there is no suggestion of the Qataris abandoning PSG in the short or medium term.
- New strategy? -
If the Qatari bid for Manchester United succeeds, "the plans for PSG would not change at all. The two clubs would be totally separate on the field and off it. The QIB is totally separate from QSI," a source close to PSG's owners insisted to AFP.
Last December, PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi also shut down any suggestion of a possible withdrawal when he said in an interview with the Financial Times "we have a long-term project here".
At the same time, Khelaifi admitted the French champions had been in discussions with several investors about potentially selling a 15 percent stake.
"Qatar is capable of persisting with the two clubs. That doesn't mean that it is finished with PSG. It is above all a demonstration of Qatar's power that it is able to show an interest in a club like Manchester United," Raphael Le Magoariec, who specialises in the Gulf and sport at Tours University in France, told AFP.
"It is unlikely that they would withdraw from Paris because that would be seen as a failure."
Nevertheless the dispute with Paris city council over PSG's attempts to buy their Parc des Princes stadium from the local authority has left a bitter taste with the club's owners.
Qatar, according to Le Magoariec, "has invested a lot and thinks that its generosity is not being respected".
Despite that, the ties between France and Qatar, which possesses stakes in numerous French multinational corporations, make it unlikely the country will divert its capital away from a club like PSG.
"Paris is the type of platform which gives Qatar standing in the world," says Le Magoariec.
Yet it is possible a slight change in strategy at PSG is taking place, given the club is being closely watched by UEFA to ensure they fall in line with the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules of European football's governing body.
The club made huge losses last season of 370 million euros and has an enormous wage bill, weighed down by the salaries of superstars Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar.
"There is maybe less investment. They have already tightened their belts because of FFP constraints," said Guegan.
"But they are going to open up to foreign investors, and depending on the identity of these investors we will see if the club continues to be an asset in Qatar's strategy of visibility or if they move on to a different stage."

Novak Djokovic Equals Steffi Graf's Record For Weeks Spent As World No. 1
Tennis legend Novak Djokovic is a week away from another milestone after equalling Steffi Graf's all-time record for most weeks spent at number one of 377. The 35-year-old Serbian remains top of the latest ATP rankings released on Monday bringing him level with the amount of weeks that Graf spent as women's world number one. Djokovic returned to number one spot for a seventh time after his victory in the Australian Open at the end of January which was a record equalling 22nd Grand Slam singles title.
Two former world number ones enjoyed success at the weekend -- Daniil Medvedev claiming the Rotterdam title and Carlos Alcaraz making a winning return to the circuit in Argentina.
Medvedev's three set victory -- his 16th career title -- over Italian Jannik Sinner sees him return to the top 10 -- he rises three spots to eighth. The losing finalist's consolation is a climb of two places to 12th in the rankings.
Alcaraz's successful return to the tour, after almost four months out, in landing the Argentina Open on Sunday sees him solidify his second place in the rankings.
Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas -- whom Djokovic beat in the Australian Open final -- rounds off the top three. Germany's former world number two Alexander Zverev arrested a decline in his ranking since his comeback after tearing ankle ligaments during last year's French Open which kept him out of action for the remainder of the year.
The 25-year-old, who also revealed after exiting the Australian Open in the second round he had type 1 diabetes since the age of three, rose one place to 16th after reaching the second round in Rotterdam.
Rankings
1. Novak Djokovic (SRB) 7070 pts
2. Carlos Alcaraz (ESP) 6480
3. Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE) 5940
4. Casper Ruud (NOR) 5515
5. Andrey Rublev 3860

Women's T20 WC: Rashada Williams Guilty Of Breaching ICC Code Of Conduct
West Indies' Rashada Williams has been fined 15 per cent of her match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The incident took place during her side's Group 2 match against Ireland in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2023 on Friday. Williams was found guilty of breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to "inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match."
In addition, one demerit point has been added to Williams' disciplinary record. This was the keeper's first offence in a 24-month period.
During the sixth over of West Indies innings, Williams made deliberate physical contact with Ireland bowler Leah Paul after being run out.
Williams admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Shandre Fritz of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees. There was no need for a formal hearing.
On-field umpires Eloise Sheridan and Vrinda Rathi, third umpire Lauren Agenbag and fourth umpire N Janani levelled the charge.
Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player's match fee, and one or two demerit points.

India Suffer First Defeat In Women's T20 WC, Lose To England By 11 Runs
Medium pacer Renuka Singh's fifer and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana's fine half-century went in vain as India lost to England by 11 runs to suffer their first defeat in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup on Saturday. Renuka Singh registered her best bowling figures (5/15) to help India restrict England to 151 for seven after Harmanpreet Kaur opted to bowl. Renuka did the early damage, picking up the first three wickets to peg England back and then returned to take two more towards the fag end of the innings.
In the chase, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana led the charge with a 41-ball 52, which was studded with seven boundaries and a six, while Richa Ghosh remained unbeaten on 47 off 34 balls as India fell short by 11 runs, managing 140 for 5 in their 20 overs.
India did not have the best of starts, losing Shafali Verma in the fourth over. Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet too departed in quick succession as India slumped to 62 for 3 in 10.2 overs.
But Mandhana and Ghosh shared a 43-run fourth-wicket stand to keep India in the hunt.
But England skipper Heather Knight made some brilliant bowling changes towards the end to stifle India's run flow.
Needing 34 runs off the final two overs, Sophie Ecclestone bowled a brilliant penultimate over, giving away just three runs and also accounted for the wicket of Deepti Sharma.
In the final over, the asking became too steep, but Ghosh found the boundary twice and also hit a six off Katherine Sciver-Brunt, but it was not enough.
With India needing 59 off 30 balls, Mandhana tried to up the ante and stepped out to hit Sarah Glenn for a maximum to bring up a well-deserved half-century.
But the bowler had the last laugh as Mandhana departed in search of one too many, caught by Katherine Sciver in the very next ball.
Earlier, India made a perfect start after opting to bowl as Renuka induced a faint outside edge from Danni Wyatt and Richha Ghosh gleefully accepted the chance in the third delivery of the day.
Renuka was on fire as she accounted for two more English batters in her next two overs to hand India the upper hand after Harmanpreet won the toss and elected to bowl.
Renuka first cleaned up Alice Capsey in the third over and then came back to disturb the woodwork of Sophie Dunkley in her next over as England slumped to 29 for 3 in 4.4 overs.
Thereafter, Nat Sciver-Brunt and skipper Heather Knight (28) took the attack to the opposition and played aggressively.
The duo shared a 51-run stand off just 38 balls to give some impetus to England's innings.
But just when the partnership was looking threatening, Shikha Pandey broke the stand, picking up her first wicket since October 2021.
It was a lucky breakthrough for Pandey as Knight picked out Shafali Verma in the covers -- the only fielder inside the circle -- from a juicy full toss outside off.
Nat Sciver did all the hard work en route her 42-ball 50 but gave away her wicket when England needed her the most, caught by Smriti Mandhana at short third man off Deepti Sharma's bowling as the batter went for a reverse sweep, only to miscue it.
In the final over of England's innings, Renuka accounted for Amy Jones (40 off 27) and Katherine Sciver-Brunt to record her best T20I bowling figures.
England are through to the semi-finals, while India will play Ireland next on February 20.

India In Asia Mixed Team Badminton Quarterfinals As Group Topper
Star shuttlers P V Sindhu and H S Prannoy won their respective singles matches as India made it to the quarterfinals of the Asia Mixed Team Badminton Championships as group toppers after defeating Malaysia in Dubai on Thursday. Prannoy began the proceedings for India in their final Group B match and had to fight hard against world no.4 Zii Jia Lee before stunning his rival 18-21 21-13 25-23 in the men's singles match that lasted one hour and 10 minutes.
In contrast, Sindhu took just 34 minutes to beat lower-ranked Ling Ching Wong 21-13 21-17 in the women's singles and give India 2-0 lead.
But the men's doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Chirag Shetty suffered a 16-21 10-21 defeat to the duo of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik as Malaysia made it 1-2.
Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand then gave India the winning 3-1 lead as they shocked Commonwealth Games champions Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharanto 23-21 21-15 to hand India an unassailable 3-1 lead India had earlier beaten Kazakhstan and UAE 5-0 each in their first two group matches.

Australia Rout Sri Lanka At Women's T20 World Cup, Move Close To Semis
Australian opening batter Alyssa Healy said Australia had adapted well to "low and slow" conditions after they scored a commanding 10-wicket win over previously unbeaten Sri Lanka in their Women's T20 World Cup match at St George's Park in Gqeberha on Thursday. The win virtually assured Australia of a place in the semi-finals with three wins out of three, but there's still a possibility of a three-way tie in Group One. Australia's last group match is against South Africa at the same ground on Saturday night.
Healy said conditions on Saturday could be very different as she believed a fast, grassy pitch was being prepared to suit South Africa's fast bowlers. "We just try to adapt to the conditions we get," she said.
"We've seen that green seamer lingering out there for Saturday night so it should be a good showdown for the quicks." If South Africa win their last two matches and Sri Lanka recover from Thursday's mauling to defeat New Zealand in their final game three teams would have the same number of points.
Defending champions Australia, though, have an advantage on net run rate. Sri Lanka were restricted to 112 for eight on Thursday after being sent in to bat in overcast conditions.
It never looked nearly enough as Healy (54 not out) and Beth Mooney (56 not out) scored freely from the start of the Australian innings.
'World class'
Grace Harris and Megan Schutt were mainly responsible for Sri Lanka's moderate batting performance, although all Australia's bowlers were economical on a slow pitch. Harris ran from mid-on and took a diving catch off Ellyse Perry to end an aggressive innings by Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu (16) to effect Australia's first breakthrough with the total on 30.
Sri Lanka scored 50 in the first seven overs but became becalmed against Australia's slow bowlers. Harris took two wickets in an over with her off-spinners to reduce Sri Lanka to 69 for three as they added only another 19 runs in the seven overs.
Schutt took four wickets in her last two overs, while wicketkeeper Healy made three stumpings. Healy and Mooney were seldom troubled as they scored at well above the required run rate.
Healy frequently used her feet to Sri Lanka's assortment of spin bowlers and hit six fours and a six off 43 balls, while the left-handed Mooney ended a poor start to her tournament with good timing and placement in striking seven boundaries off 53 deliveries.
Mooney was out for nought in a warm-up match against Ireland and made nought and two in her first two innings in the tournament. Athapaththu said Sri Lanka were not disheartened by the result.
"They (Australia) are a world-class team and world champions. We are a young team. If we play our best cricket we can beat New Zealand and play in the semi-finals," she insisted. If Australia beat South Africa, a win against New Zealand on Sunday would guarantee a semi-final place for Sri Lanka.

"If Somebody Is Doing Better...": Dhawan On Exclusion From Team India
Shikhar Dhawan finds himself out of the Indian team less than three months after captaining the ODI side but the 37-year-old opener has not yet given up on a strong desire to play the World Cup at home later this year. One of the finest openers India have produced in the 50-over format, Dhawan was dropped from the side following a lean run which included the three games in Bangladesh in December. The southpaw had led the side in New Zealand in November when Rohit Sharma and K L Rahul were rested.
Shubman Gill came into the team at Dhawan's expense and the young opener has not looked back ever since, amassing four hundreds, including a double hundred in his last seven innings.
Speaking to PTI on the sidelines of the inaugural Formula E race in India, the ever optimistic Dhawan looked back at ups and downs of the last three months. "They (ups and downs) are part of life. With time, with experience you learn how to handle them with ease. I find lot of strength in them. I did my best. If somebody is doing better than my best, that is fine.
"That is why that person is there and I am not there. I am very happy and content wherever I am. I make sure my process goes on strong. Of course there is always a chance of me coming back to the side.
"If it comes it is good, if it doesn't come that is also good. I have achieved a lot and I am happy with that. Whatever has to come will come. I don't get desperate about it," said Dhawan, who has played 34 Tests, 167 ODIs and 68 T20s.
With his last Test coming in 2018 and T20 International in 2021, Dhawan had become a one-format player until his exclusion from the ODI set up.
His immediate focus is on the upcoming IPL in which he will be captaining Punjab Kings for the first time.
Dhawan has returned from a 10-day training stint at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. In another week's time, he will be in Mohali for a pre-IPL camp with Punjab Kings. "My IPL preparation is going on well. I was in Bangalore for 10 days. The focus was on fitness. With the IPL coming up, I will join the camp in Mohali from Feburary 24 and then we regroup again later on and get going.
"I am in a very good state of mind and looking forward to leading from the front," he said.
During the Fomrula E weekend in Hyderabad, Dhawan also got to catch up with the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, whose passion for cars and motorsport is well-known.
Talking about his first time at a Formula E race, he added: "It is always lovely to meet Sachin paaji. He has got great passion towards sports cars.
"It was a great experience. I took a lap of the track. I see lot of potential for Formula E in India as it is sustainable and promotes a healthy environment. Since it is organised mainly on public roads, it should gather a lot of ground in India."

BCCI Chief Selector Chetan Sharma In Midst Of TV Sting Controversy
BCCI chief selector Chetan Sharma was caught in a controversy on Tuesday after he allegedly revealed classified selection matters during a sting operation conducted by a TV channel. Sharma, who was recently reinstated by the BCCI after being removed following India's showing in the T20 World Cup in Australia, was seen during the sting operation casting aspersions on players like Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. Sharma also allegedly revealed his internal discussions with head coach Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli during the sting conducted by Zee News.
Sharma alleged that a lot of players take injections to expedite their return to competitive cricket despite being 80 to 85 per cent fit. The former India pace bowler also alleged that there was a difference of opinion between him and the team management over Bumrah's return from a stress fracture for the T20I series against Australia in September.
Bumrah still continues to be out of action, and will likely miss the entire four-Test Border-Gavaskar series and the three-match ODI series after that.
Sharma also alleged that there was an ego tussle between former captain Kohli and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. Sharma was unavailable for a comment when contacted by PTI.
It is learnt that the BCCI is looking into the matter, as national selectors are bound by contract and not supposed to speak to the media.
"It will be (BCCI secretary) Jay's (Shah) call as to what will be Chetan's future. The question is whether T20 skipper Hardik Pandya or ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma would like to sit with Chetan in a selection meeting knowing that he has let out internal discussions," a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Royal Challengers Bangalore ended up with a star-studded squad at the end of the Women's Premier League (WPL) auction on Monday with India opener Smriti Mandhana becoming the highest-paid cricketer in the entire process with Rs 3.4 crore. The team also boasted of talented Team India players like Renuka Singh and Richa Ghosh while Sophie Devine and Ellyse Perry provide the support on the international talent front. Along with the youth on offer, the RCB franchise also made two smart picks in signing the experienced duo of Heather Knight and Dane van Niekerk for their respective base prices.

Women's T20 WC: Capsey's 51 Sets Up England's 4-wicket Win Over Ireland
Top-order batter Alice Capsey smashed a stunning 22-ball 51 to steer England to a four-wicket win over neighbours Ireland in their Women's T20 World Cup group match here on Monday. Capsey, who was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs 75 lakh during the Women's Premier League auctions on Monday, struck as many as 10 fours during her whirlwind knock that blew Ireland away and helped England notch up the win -- their second consecutive one -- with 34 balls to spare. Chasing a paltry 106 for a win, England were 69 for 1 at the end of powerplay overs with Capsey going strong with a flurry of boundaries after opener Sophia Dunkley (4) was out cheaply in the first over.
England huffed and puffed towards the target after Capsey's dismissal in the second ball of the seventh over. Nat Sciver-Brunt (5), who was bought for a whopping Rs 3.2 crore by Mumbai Indians in the WPL auctions, got out cheaply, so also captain Heather Knight (14) and wicketkeeper Amy Jones (12).
But Capsey's pyrotechnics -- strike rate of 231.8 -- and the meagre target meant that England easily crossed the line, reaching 107 for 6 in 14.2 overs with Katherine Sciver-Brunt and Sophie Ecclestone remaining not out on 5 and 0 respectively.
For Ireland, Cara Murray took three wickets for 15 runs while Orla Prendergast and Arlene Kelly got one each.
Earlier, the England spin trio of Ecclestone (3/13), Sarah Glenn (3/19) and Charlie Dean (2/26) wrecked havoc on the Ireland batters to skittle them out for 105 in 18.2 overs.
Opting to bat, Ireland suffered a batting collapse as they were stifled by the England spin trio. Only the top four Ireland batters could reach double-digit figures.
Ireland began on a decent note with Gaby Lewis (36) and Amy Hunter (15) stitching 35 runs from 5.1 overs before the latter got dismissed. They were still in a decent situation when Lewis was out in the third ball of the 13th to be 80 for 3.
But soon, Ireland fizzled out as they lost seven wickets for just 25 runs in 5.5 overs (35 balls).
Lewis was the top-scorer for Ireland and her 37-ball 36 had five fours. The opening stand involving Lewis and Hunter was the highest for Ireland.
Ecclestone, who was bought by UP Warriorz in the WPL auctions, got two wickets in two balls in the 13th over -- that of Lewis and Eimear Richardson (0) -- but could not complete her hat-trick. She also had the crucial wicket of Ireland captain Laura Delany (12).
Pacers Lauren Bell and Katherine Sciver-Brunt took a wicket each.
